In this final message of our “Jesus Appears” series, we turn to one of the most tender and restorative moments in the Gospel of John. After the resurrection, Jesus appears to His disciples by the Sea of Galilee not with thunder or spectacle, but with breakfast, presence, and grace.
This week, we step into a special sub‑series also titled “Jesus Appears,” where we turn our attention to the living, breathing stories of people whose lives have been transformed by unexpected encounters with Jesus. This service invites us to listen, reflect, and celebrate as individuals share their testimonies, moments when Jesus showed up in their darkest valleys, their quiet questions, their seasons of doubt, and their moments of breakthrough. These stories remind us that the Jesus who appeared to His disciples after the resurrection is the same Jesus who appears to us today: guiding, healing, restoring, and calling us by name.
In this week's message, we continue our “Jesus Appears” series by looking at one of the most honest and relatable moments in the Gospel of John Jesus' appearance to Thomas. After the resurrection, Thomas wrestled with doubt, disappointment, and the tension between what he hoped for and what he could believe. Yet Jesus meets him with compassion, not condemnation.
John 20:19-31 - Jesus Appears to His Disciples 19 On the evening of that first day of the week, when the disciples were together, with the doors locked for fear of the Jewish leaders, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 20 After he said this, he showed them his hands and side. The disciples were overjoyed when they saw the Lord. 21 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” 22 And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23 If you forgive anyone's sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” Jesus Appears to Thomas 24 Now Thomas (also known as Didymus), one of the Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!” But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his side, I will not believe.” 26 A week later his disciples were in the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.” 28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my God!” 29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” The Purpose of John's Gospel 30 Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31 But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Jesus Appears to the Disciples on the Road to Emmaus
In John 20:19–23, the disciples are hiding behind locked doors, overwhelmed by fear and uncertainty. Yet it is in that very moment when hope feels distant and courage feels impossible that Jesus appears among them and speaks peace. In this message, Rinus reminds us that Jesus still meets us in the same way today. He steps into the rooms we hide in, the fears we carry, and the moments we least expect Him. His presence doesn't wait for our confidence; it breaks through our fear and breathes new life, new purpose, and the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Discussion QuestionsSermon Overview The resurrection of Jesus proves God has kept all his ancient promises and so will come through on all his promises that lie ahead.Digging Deeper 1. What assumptions have you seen people have that keep them from “getting” Jesus? What barriers did you have to overcome to receive Jesus? 2. Jesus helps his disciples understand God's plan by going to all the Scriptures (i.e., the Old Testament) and showing how it was about himself (24:27). How does Jesus' approach affect the way we approach reading and understanding the Bible?3. What was that moment like when you understood who Jesus was for the first time? If you haven't yet experienced that, what do you think holds you back?4. In the sermon, it was said that we can sometimes think Jesus is far away, even when he's right alongside us. How might this be (or has it been) true in your life? 5. Why doesn't God always conform to your expectations? Why might this actually be a good thing?6. How can you grow in letting God's Word define your expectations for life?7. What situation or circumstance in your life right now tends to overshadow the power of the resurrection? 8. Consider a circumstance you're in right now. How can the fact that Jesus is truly alive help you endure it well? Prayer

In today's episode of the Tiny Theologians Easter series, Farmer Caroline shares the joyful news that Jesus did not stay hidden after the resurrection—He appeared to His disciples, alive and real. As she reflects from the garden, we learn that Jesus showed His followers His hands and side, proving that He had truly risen from the dead. Today's symbol is the robe, which reminds us that Jesus is alive in a real, resurrected body—strong, victorious, and still bearing the marks of His love. Through this story, we see that real people saw Jesus alive, giving us confidence that the resurrection is true and that the good news can be trusted. On this Easter Sunday, Caleb leads us through Mary Magdalene's powerful encounter with the risen Jesus. Standing outside the empty tomb in her grief, Mary is met by the One who calls her by name and transforms her sorrow into hope. This passage invites us to see resurrection not only as a historic miracle, but as a personal moment of recognition where Jesus meets us, restores us, and sends us out with the good news of new life.
04/05/2026 Paul Bang John 20:1-18 The Resurrection 20 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came to the tomb early, while it was still dark, and saw that the stone had been taken away from the tomb. 2 So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, “They have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.” 3 So Peter went out with the other disciple, and they were going toward the tomb. 4 Both of them were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. 5 And stooping to look in, he saw the linen cloths lying there, but he did not go in. 6 Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen cloths lying there, 7 and the face cloth, which had been on Jesus'[a] head, not lying with the linen cloths but folded up in a place by itself. 8 Then the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the Scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples went back to their homes. Jesus Appears to Mary Magdalene 11 But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb, and as she wept she stooped to look into the tomb. 12 And she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had lain, one at the head and one at the feet. 13 They said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping?” She said to them, “They have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.” 14 Having said this, she turned around and saw Jesus standing, but she did not know that it was Jesus. 15 Jesus said to her, “Woman, why are you weeping? Whom are you seeking?” Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, “Sir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.” 16 Jesus said to her, “Mary.” She turned and said to him in Aramaic,[b] “Rabboni!” (which means Teacher). 17 Jesus said to her, “Do not cling to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father; but go to my brothers and say to them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.'” 18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, “I have seen the Lord”—and that he had said these things to her.

Stephen Angliss | The reality of everything that God has said and done hinges on the reality of the Resurrection. While many understand the purpose of Christ's death on the Cross to atone for sin, the specific purpose and function of the Resurrection may seem uncertain to them. When the Risen Lord first appears to Mary Magdalene, He does so in a way that outlines the specific accomplishments of the Resurrection. Join us in our study of Christ's interaction with Mary to better understand what He accomplished by coming back from the dead.

Among the greatest evidence for Christ's resurrection is the rapid change in His followers. The disciples went from a group of timid, fearful men to bold followers who died for Jesus. How do we explain this? The answer lies in the fact that they saw the risen Christ after His death. Over a period of 40 days between Christ's resurrection and ascension, He appeared to as many as 500 eyewitnesses. “It is not enough for the skeptic, then, to simply dismiss the Christian teaching about the resurrection of Jesus by saying, ‘It just couldn't have happened.' He or she must face and answer all these historical questions: Why did Christianity emerge so rapidly, with such power? No other band of messianic followers in that era concluded their leader was raised from the dead—why did this group do so? No group of Jews ever worshipped a human being as God. What led them to do it?... How do you account for the hundreds of eyewitnesses to the resurrection who lived on for decades and publicly maintained their testimony, eventually giving their lives for their belief?” (Keller) When we experience the risen Christ, our fear becomes peaceful confidence and our timidity becomes boldness. We proclaim a risen Christ that overcomes our slavery to fear. “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.” (2 Tim. 1:7) Take-Home Message: The risen Christ conquers my slavery to fear.
