Can a villain in Scripture still function as a type of Christ? In this episode of Shadows to Substance, Pastor George Sayour responds to criticism surrounding the claim that Saul — particularly in 1 Samuel 11 — can be understood typologically.Using Romans 5, Hebrews, biblical parallels, and examples from Adam, Jonah, Solomon, Cyrus, Isaac, and Saul, this episode explains how biblical typology works through both comparison and contrast.A type is not morally identical to Christ. Rather, Scripture uses patterns, echoes, and narrative structures to point us to Jesus as the greater and final fulfillment. This episode explores:• Biblical typology explained• Saul as a possible type of Christ• Adam and Christ parallels• Jonah as a foreshadowing pattern• Shadows and substance in Scripture• How the New Testament interprets the Old TestamentIf you enjoy covenant theology, biblical theology, typology, and Christ-centered interpretation of Scripture, subscribe to Eschatology Matters Network for weekly episodes.Watch all of our videos and subscribe to our channel for the latest content >HereHere
Send us Fan MailRethinking the Church – One Body, Many PartsThis is an episode that was live-streamed on our church (Threshold Church of Christ) youtube channel.Repensando la Iglesia: un solo cuerpo, muchas partesBig Idea :The local church is not a religious event you attend but a living body you belong to; when every member is connected and engaged, the whole body grows healthy and strong.La gran idea: La iglesia local no es un evento religioso al que asistes, sino un cuerpo vivo al que perteneces; cuando cada miembro está conectado y comprometido, todo el cuerpo crece sano y fuerte. Luke's closing scene lifts the eyes to the Ascension. Jesus raises his hands, blesses, and is carried into heaven, and worship breaks open into joy. Acts then lets Pentecost rush the room. The Spirit fills, rests on each, and gives utterance. Christ departs in order to draw near, so his people now live by his indwelling Spirit, not by his visible presence. That sets the frame for what Paul shows in 1 Thessalonians 2. Real ministry happens because God has come to dwell, and that same Spirit gives boldness, purity, love, and holiness.Paul's entry into Thessalonica is not empty. Philippi had brought shaming, beatings, and a dungeon, yet God put steel into his voice and he preached amid strong opposition. The gospel, then, is not a soft thing. It stands up in a storm and sings at midnight. Paul says the message did not arise from error, uncleanness, or trickery. God had examined him and entrusted him with the gospel. That word entrusted sounds like a seal. Approved after testing. If God has the key to the vault, he only hands it to clean hands.Paul's methods match his message. No flattering words. No cloak for greed. No reaching for applause. He works for God's smile, not man's. That keeps the heart straight when compliments come and when they do not. Then the tone shifts. A nursing mother enters the room. Gentleness carries the gospel. Paul shares not only the gospel of God but also his own life. Love does hard things, quiet things, even things no one wants to do. He labors night and day so no one bears his load, then pours out the word all day.A father then takes the floor. Paul exhorts, comforts, and charges so that each would walk worthy of God, who calls into his kingdom and glory. Truth, love, and holiness run like three strands in one cord. Truth makes the content clean, love makes the contact tender, holiness makes the conduit credible. Holiness asks what a person is when the door is shut. Righteousness watches conduct with people. Blamelessness guards public reputation. The aim is not fame but formation, not numbers but lives that bring praise and honor and glory to God.
Most men trying to quit porn focus almost entirely on behavior, but underneath the struggle is often something much deeper:A hungry heart longing to be filled by God instead of numbed through escape. In this episode, Shawn and Helena unpack humility, surrender, and what it actually looks like to let Jesus meet the deeper places of your heart.Using Andrew Murray's book Humility: The Beauty of Holiness as a foundation, this conversation explores how real freedom grows through dependence on God, intimacy with the Holy Spirit, and learning to empty ourselves of self-reliance so we can be filled with truth and life.In this episode:why heart hunger matters in porn recoveryhow humility creates space for healing and freedom with JesusHelena's story of coming out of depression through surrender and filling herself with Christthe difference between suppressing desire and bringing it to Godhow intimacy with Jesus changes porn recovery, marriage, and parentingwhy lasting freedom from porn requires more than discipline alone--If you've ever known what you should do… but still struggled to trust God deeply in your recovery journey, this episode will help things start making sense.

He has been a Seminaries and Institutes of Religion coordinator, Institute instructor, and is now a Seminary instructor. He has also taught EFY and FSY for 20 years. John loves hiking and going on adventures of most any kind. Links King Before Kingdom Watch the video and share your thoughts in the Zion Lab community Transcript available with the video in the Zion Lab community Highlights John Bushman explores the necessity of a “faithful revival” centered on Jesus Christ rather than the institutional church. He argues that while the restored church is essential, members and leaders often mistake the “kingdom” for the “king,” leading to a checklist-based faith. The discussion focuses on transitioning from a culture of “legalism” to one of genuine “regeneration” through a relationship with the Savior. 00:04:04 – Importance of Collaboration in Leadership 00:05:39 – The Most Important Part of Sacrament Meeting 00:08:06 – The Concept of Revival in the Church 00:10:57 – Spiritual Sleep in the Church 00:12:16 – The Challenge of Routine in Worship 00:13:04 – The Importance of Understanding “Why” 00:14:28 – The Purpose of Church Services 00:19:00 – Faith vs. Knowledge in the Gospel 00:24:01 – The New Covenant vs. Old Covenant 00:27:25 – The Role of Jesus in Salvation 00:28:47 – The Shift Towards Jesus-Centered Worship 00:30:35 – The Importance of Personal Conversion Stories 00:32:51 – The Relationship Between Church and Christ 00:36:20 – The Role of Church Leaders in Focusing on Jesus 00:39:21 – The Concept of Legalism in Faith 00:44:50 – Moving Beyond Legalism to Grace Key Insights The “King” vs. the “Kingdom”: Bushman emphasizes that the church is the vehicle (the kingdom), but Jesus Christ is the destination (the king). A faithful revival occurs when the focus shifts from just belonging to the organization to surrendering to the Savior. Conversion vs. Testimony: A testimony often focuses on the truth of facts (e.g., Joseph Smith was a prophet), whereas true conversion is the decision to stop doing things one’s own way and surrender life to Jesus. The New Covenant of Faith: Bushman clarifies that “faith” in the New Testament is better understood as “trust” or “reliance,” similar to the trust one places in a surgeon. It is an internal change of heart rather than just an outward performance of commandments. Avoiding “Spiritual Autopilot”: Routines, such as the sacrament or repetitive church meetings, can lead to a “spiritual sleep” where members go through the motions without emotional or spiritual connection to God. Regeneration Over Prohibition: True change (regeneration) happens when a person no longer desires to do evil because their heart has been changed by grace, which is more effective than “prohibition” or simply following a list of “don’ts”. Leadership Applications Pattern Interrupts in Meetings: Leaders can revitalize routine ordinances by adding brief, 60-second “pattern interrupts”. For example, a bishop might briefly challenge the ward to think of one specific way to remember the Lord during the upcoming week just before the sacrament is administered. Shifting the “Why” of Meetings: Leaders should evaluate if their meetings are designed to increase knowledge (factoids) or to facilitate a “worship service” that connects individuals with divinity. Focusing on Redemption in Interviews: When working with members on repentance or baptism, John suggests focusing on the member’s commitment to follow Jesus for the rest of their lives rather than just confirming they believe the Church is true. Is Jesus really present throughout the entire Bible? In this first episode of Shadows to Substance, Pastor George Sayour introduces the central claim of the series: Christ is not confined to the New Testament—He is woven into the entire story of Scripture. From the road to Emmaus to the patterns, types, and shadows of the Old Testament, this episode explores how figures like Adam, Isaac, and the Passover Lamb all point forward to Jesus. What many see as disconnected stories are actually part of a unified, Christ-centered narrative. If you've ever struggled to understand the Old Testament—or wondered how it connects to the Gospel—this episode will reframe how you read the Bible. This is where the shadows begin to take shape.Watch all of our videos and subscribe to our channel for the latest content >HereHere

What does it actually mean to lead your family spiritually? For many parents, the pressure feels overwhelming. But in this conversation, Alistair Begg reframes success in a refreshingly simple and biblical way: Keep your kids alive Feed their bodies And don't neglect feeding their souls Through stories from his own childhood, parenting years, and now as a grandfather, Alistair encourages parents to focus less on performance and more on consistent, Christ-centered rhythms. This episode is especially helpful for parents who feel: Unequipped to teach the Bible Discouraged by inconsistency Unsure how to balance grace and obedience Let this Mother's Day be a reminder that she deserves care, too. When a church centers itself on a personality, it risks losing sight of the One it exists to proclaim. Ray, E.Z., Mark, and Oscar examine the growing tendency for churches to become brands, where influence and personality can overshadow the faithful preaching of God's Word. The guys explain that branding itself is not inherently wrong, but problems arise when a congregation centers on a charismatic figure instead of the Lord. Scripture calls pastors not to build platforms but to shepherd souls with humility, character, and accountability before God.The conversation turns to how ministry can slowly shift into performance. The guys note that congregations sometimes crave entertainment, putting pressure on pastors to become performers rather than faithful expositors of Scripture. Historically, the pulpit was treated as a sacred space where God's Word was opened and applied with reverence. When churches attempt to compete with entertainment culture, they risk replacing holiness with spectacle. The guys remind listeners that the true audience of worship is God Himself, not the crowd in the room. Faithful preaching requires courage to stay anchored in the text, addressing sin, righteousness, and judgment even when such messages are unpopular. At the same time, the guys caution against swinging to the opposite extreme of rigid legalism. Creativity, craftsmanship, and thoughtful communication can serve the gospel when they keep Christ at the center. The real danger is when numbers, applause, and viral attention become the measure of success. That mindset can slowly cultivate an appetite for gimmicks instead of truth. Church gatherings are not meant to mirror theater but to proclaim the worthiness of God and the power of the gospel. Encouragingly, many younger believers are rediscovering the beauty of Scripture-centered worship where reverence and conviction are welcomed rather than avoided. Finally, the guys remind listeners that the temptation to build ministries around human personalities is not new. Even the early church faced warnings against elevating leaders above Christ. Pastors must resist the lure of approval and remember they are servants of the Lord. Faithful preaching gives people what they need rather than what they want, and every sermon should be offered as an act of worship to God. When conviction comes, both leaders and congregations must respond with humility and repentance. The church exists to proclaim Christ and the gospel, refusing to trade eternal truth for temporary applause.Send us Fan MailThanks for listening! Keep the focus on Christ this Easter by engaging kids in this podcast that teaches them the true meaning of Easter. Through fun game play, beautiful music, children will come away knowing:Jesus Christ was resurrected for me.Jesus Christ suffered and died for me.The week of Easter is a good time to teach your children about what the Savior did for us in Gethsemane and on the cross. “He Will Swallow Up Death in Victory”EasterThe life of Jesus Christ “is central to all human history” (“The Living Christ: The Testimony of the Apostles,” Gospel Library). What does that mean? In part, it means that the Savior's life influences the eternal destiny of everyone who has ever lived or ever will live. You might also say that the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, on that first Easter Sunday, connects all of God's people throughout history: those who were born before His Resurrection looked forward to it with faith (see Jacob 4:4), and those born after look back on it with faith.
Learn how the old covenant mindset hampers our worship. Daniel explores how Jesus fulfilled the law and removed the veil, allowing us to worship freely in spirit and truth.

Is virtue something that is innate? Or can it be learned, practiced, and grown in our lives? It's an important question, especially for students and young adults who are discovering God's calling and purpose for their lives.Last year, we were privileged to host Dr. Grant Horner, Director of the Classical Liberal Arts Program at The Master's University, to speak with our 11th and 12th grade students on the topic of virtue: what is it, why we should aim for it, and what a virtuous life looks like for a disciple of Christ. And, he does it with plenty of humor as well as soul searching scriptural truths.Parents - you will not only be inspired and exhorted yourselves to "live a life worthy of the calling you have received" - but for those of you who have students at a classical Christian school, you will also be grateful that this is what your students' teachers are guiding them towards.Listen to it all at once, or take some time to come back to this longer episode if you have to; it's a worthwhile listen all the way to the end, including some very thought-provoking questions from our students. This season of Cultivate is sponsored by Hershey Financial Advisers, a wealth management firm located on North Pointe Blvd in Lancaster, leading people to make better financial decisions, and empowering them to fulfill a vision beyond themselves.

Most Christians don't expect their deepest wounds to come from inside the church, but for Elizabeth Bennett McKinney, that's exactly what happened. Bullied by fellow believers starting at age 12, with rumors spreading through two churches and three schools, she walked away from church, turned against God, and battled social anxiety, depression, and PTSD. In this episode, Elizabeth joins Robert Plank to explain why what many dismiss as “church drama” or “bullying” is actually abuse, how Satan, not other Christians is the real enemy, and how naming church hurt is the first step toward healing. https://youtu.be/_2CdxmZbFZg Elizabeth lays out what church hurt looks like in real life, emotional, mental, physical, and even sexual harm in Christian settings, and how gossip, slander, and unresolved conflict quietly tear congregations apart. You'll learn how biblical conflict resolution (Matthew 18), unity, and refusing to join toxic conversations can stop problems from exploding, plus how Romans functions as “psychology 101, God style" for understanding human behavior. If you've been wounded by people in the church or struggle to trust again, this conversation will point you back to Scripture, clarify what really happened, and remind you that God's plan is bigger than what tried to break you. Quotes: “What you call ‘church drama' might actually be abuse, and naming it is the first step to healing it.” “Church people hurt me, but Christ healed me. I left the building, but He never left me.” “The real bully isn't sitting in your pew; he's whispering in your ear. Stop fighting each other and start fighting the enemy.” Resources: Elizabeth B. With Easter just over a month away, this is the perfect time to gather inspiration for creating Christ-centered Easter experiences that are simple, flexible, and meaningful. With her typical warmth and fun ideas, Maria Eckersley is here to share how we can turn teaching of the Savior and His Atonement into the tradition that shapes our Easter season. When we do this, it gives us "permission" to pare down the extras and focus on what turns our hearts to Him. Maria is the author of a new book, Teaching Easter: 15 Hands-on Lessons to Help You Study, Teach, and Delight in the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
