It was just another evening at home with a friend when something inexplicable happened—Jessica's front door, solidly locked, mysteriously opened all the way by itself. With no signs of forced entry, no wind to blame, and no explanation, Jessica and her friend were left shaken, wondering if someone—or something—had entered their home. But that wasn't all. There was also an oddly displaced bedspread in her parents' room, and the strange behavior of her dog, who barked persistently before the door opened. This is a daily EXTRA from The Grave Talks. In a case that has drawn widespread attention, Susan Louise Lorincz, a 60-year-old resident of Florida, was convicted on Friday of manslaughter by use of a firearm in the tragic death of Ajike “A.J.” Owens, a 35-year-old Black mother of four. The verdict came after a brief deliberation by an all-white jury. Outside the courtroom, Pamela Dias, Owens' mother, said, “We've achieved some justice for Ajike. My heart is a little lighter,” Dias said. “This has been a long journey to get to this stage, to get to this verdict. I find some peace with that verdict.” Ajike “A.J.” Owens was fatally shot on June 2, 2023, as reported by the Marion County Sheriff's Office. Deputies initially responded to a call about trespassing around 9 p.m. Shortly after, they received another call about a shooting at the same address. Upon arrival, deputies found Owens in front of Lorincz's apartment with a gunshot wound. They provided immediate aid until Marion County Fire Rescue arrived and transported Owens to the hospital, where she later died. Detectives, through interviews, surveillance footage, and prior incident reports, discovered that Lorincz had grown increasingly hostile towards Owens' children, who had been playing in a nearby field. Authorities reported a series of escalating incidents leading up to the shooting. A neighbor witnessed Lorincz yelling at Owens' children, and during the altercation, Lorincz threw a roller skate at the 10-year-old, injuring his toe. When the boy and his 12-year-old brother approached Lorincz to address the issue, she opened her door and swung an umbrella at them. After the children relayed the events to their mother, Owens went to Lorincz's residence, knocked repeatedly, and demanded that Lorincz come outside. In response, Lorincz fired a shot through the door, hitting Owens in the chest as her 10-year-old son stood beside her. Lorincz later claimed self-defense, alleging that Owens had tried to break down her door and had previously attacked her. Despite Lorincz's claims of self-defense, detectives concluded that her actions were not legally justified. Bill Gladson, State Attorney for the Fifth Judicial Circuit, stated in a news release that the case serves as a tragic reminder of the profound consequences of gun violence. “The defendant's choices have left four young children without their mother, a loss that will be felt for the rest of their lives,” he said. “While today's verdict can't bring AJ back, we hope it brings some measure of justice and peace to her family and friends.” Lorincz, who faces up to 30 years in prison, will be sentenced at a later date. The Austrian house where a doctor experimented on children.Evy Mages grew up in and out of foster care in 1970s and 80s Austria. But even when she started a new life in the US, she was haunted by traumatic memories of a strange yellow house high up in the Alps, where she had been placed as an eight-year-old. It took an idle internet search in her 50s to reveal that this was actually an institution called a 'Kinderbeobachtungsstation', or 'child-observation station', where vulnerable children were experimented on by a psychologist using shocking methods. She decided to step back into her past to uncover the full, disturbing truth of what happened there.Presenter: India Rakusen Producer: Edgar Maddicott Editor: Rebecca Vincent
I write for AMR Publishing , aka Andrea Mile Rhoads. She puts out several Anthologies a year and I along with several other writers put together some of the best reading you will ever read. We have down thrillers, crime, romance, well not me, Christmas, you name it she puts it on. Usually she has a release party on Facebook and invites all to attend. Since I have revived the show, I thought it only befitting that we all come together and blow this little horror anthology out of the water here on Off The Chain. Yep, you will be able to call in and talk to your favorite author. There are five of us in the little jewel, T Elizabeth Guthrie, Pete Thorn, WS Greer, Virginia Johnson and me. This Show was set up a couple of weeks ago. Last night we lost our fearless leader Andrea Miles Rhoads. So in honor of her ..... the tribe will have this show for her. Yes, some of our authors will be live on the show and yes we will talk about The Locked Door. However, we also want to talk about Andrea and how she has impacted our lives. How we met her, how we have been on this journey with her and what she means to us a freind, publisher and go to person. A huge hole has been torn in the tapstry of our industry. One that will never be repaired. Fly high with the Angels my friend. You are already so missed
