Lenty Lent

Among The Lilies

Are you having a Lenty Lent? It may feel like your failing or things are going wrong, but maybe you are right where the Lord wants you. Its just a bit of pain from the composting process of our souls.  Lent is not a gloomy interruption of life. It is the Church handing us winter on purpose.   In the garden, winter strips everything down. The bright flowers are gone. The branches look skeletal. You walk outside and think, Nothing is happening here.   But beneath the surface, roots are deepening. The soil is being replenished. Worms are turning what fell and died into nourishment. What looks like stillness is actually preparation.   Lent does the same.   It takes away the noise. It asks us to fast. To sit in silence. To feel our hunger instead of numbing it. To look honestly at what needs pruning in our lives. And at first it feels like a loss. Like grey skies feel to me today. Like not being able to see more than a few feet in front of you.   But Lent is not about deprivation for its own sake. It is about increasing capacity. Uniting ourselves to Christ in his passion. Praying in the garden of Gethsemane. Facing Calvery.    When you prune a plant, you cut away what once looked fruitful. You remove even good branches so that better fruit can grow. That is uncomfortable. It feels like diminishment. But the gardener is thinking ahead to spring.   And the compost pile is not a symbol of failure. It is where the old life breaks down so it can become nourishment for new life. In the spiritual life, our disappointments, our faliures, our surrendered dreams, even our grief, none of it is wasted. Given to God, it becomes rich soil.   Lent is when we allow that decomposition to happen.    We stop clinging. We let attachments die. We allow deeper parts of the heart to awaken. The grey days reveal what the bright days sometimes hide. They show us how much we depend on consolation instead of God Himself.   And then Easter comes.   Not as a surprise, but as fulfillment. The buds that appear are not random. They are the result of hidden work. The joy feels fuller because we remember the winter. The Alleluia sounds louder because we walked through the silence.   Spring does not erase Lent. It proves it was necessary.   I'm trying to die to myself and give God my fiat. This Lent I'm also saying "I am the handmade of the Lord, be it done unto me according to your word". I'm surrendering myself to the hands of the Gardener.   And I pray for patience while the compost of my soul continues decomposing, I remind myself  that growth cannot be rushed. His ways are not my ways. But I trust and surrender.    The Gardener knows when to prune. He knows when to wait. He knows when to bring the sun.   And even when you can only see three feet in front of you, the roots are going deeper than you realize.

Send a textForty days can feel long when zeal fades by week three, yet Lent is meant to be a path of real change, not a test of willpower. We open a clear way forward: a Lenten reading plan that anchors daily prayer, teaches the heart to listen, and turns routine into renewal. From the first ash to the final Alleluia, we walk through practices and resources that help you stay grounded, attentive, and alive to grace. We start with the why: choosing the right spiritual reading keeps the heart centered when distractions swell. Then we move into the how with a simple, life‑giving walkthrough of Lectio Divina—reading, meditation, prayer, and contemplation—so scripture shifts from information to transformation. Along the way, we draw from the Desert Fathers and Mothers, whose spare wisdom cuts through noise; Augustine's aching honesty in Confessions; Aquinas' clear vision of penance as liberation; and Francis de Sales' gentle road map for holiness in ordinary life. Together, these guides shape a Lenten plan that is practical, compassionate, and deeply Catholic. We also rekindle awe through Eucharistic miracles that reorient fasting and adoration around the living presence of Christ. Fridays receive special focus with the Stations of the Cross, using classic and contemporary texts to enter the Passion with courage and tenderness. For busy days, we share audiobook and podcast options that turn commutes, kitchens, and quiet corners into places of prayer, so your practice stays steady when the schedule will not. By the end, you'll have a toolkit—books, devotions, and audio companions—to help you pray with intention, fast with purpose, and adore with wonder.Ready to make these forty days truly fruitful? Patrick explores Catholic questions about Bible translations, the validity of non-Catholic baptisms, and Mass customs like kneeling and standing, all while engaging callers in real-time on sensitive topics from confession to Communion. He weaves listener stories and personal anecdotes into honest conversations about faith, sacramental traditions, and even the social pressures within church communities. Peggy (email) - At a Lutheran baptism, the pastor said "you are" baptized in the name of the Father. I think that the Lutheran form is supposed to be the same as Catholic. So, is that not valid, and can it be valid in an 'emergency' situation so that I can just baptize the baby myself to make it valid? #catholic #sermonDramatic shift with Septuagesima Sunday: we stop saying Alleluia until Easter; we put on purple, the sign of penance. In the office, we go back to the beginning of the Bible, the opening chapter of the book of Genesis. This season represents a new start for us.We learn about the creation of the world along with the creation of mankind. We learn about the sin of our first parents. The Church wants us to start off this season with a reminder that we are wounded with Original Sin. Our souls are sick and in danger of dying.Original Sin with its wounds is like a genetic disease that is passed on through the ages, from generation to generation. Our first parents, Adam and Eve contracted the disease and modified the spiritual DNA of the human race. From that point forward, the disease is transmitted every time a child is conceived. This is a doctrine of the Catholic Faith. Trent: “If any one asserts, that the sin of Adam injured himself alone, and not his posterity; and that the holiness and justice, received of God, which he lost, he lost for himself alone, and not for us also, let him be anathema.”Trent also defines that Baptism takes away original sin, but that its effects remain in us. “This holy synod confesses and is sensible, that in the baptized there remains concupiscence, or an incentive to sin; which, whereas it is left for our exercise, cannot injure those who do not consent, but resist manfully by the grace of Jesus Christ,”The effects of Original SinHere is the situation: we received a defective spiritual DNA from our parents, such that Original Sin was communicated to our souls when we were conceived. The sin itself was taken away when we were baptized, but the effects of the sin remain in us.We are sick in our soul with these effects. And when someone is sick, you take them to the emergency room or urgent care, depending on how severe their condition is. The doctor would say to us: you have the wound of ignorance in your mind, you have the wound of malice in your will, and you have the wounds of concupiscence and weakness in your emotions.Holy Mother Church is like our nurse and doctor. She makes us aware of our condition and she prescribes remedies. She encourages us to fight against our spiritual sickness and gives us the seasons of Septuagesima and Lent to train us in that fight. When you have a disease, you try to fight it. You do not do anything that you know will foster the disease. You do not go to a place where the disease is rampant. If I go to a rock concert or a bad website or a bar, the disease within me will grow stronger. I will become more sick, weaker. But we do not just fight the disease by avoiding places where the air is infected with sin. We take the disease everywhere we go, because we carry it within ourselves. We know that when a disease is inside a person, it seeks to propagate itself. Think of cancer for instance. It is always trying to grow more and take over our body, until it has destroyed us. The sin within us tries to do the same. Just as cancer patients have to fight the cancer within them if they want to survive, so too we have to fight the cancer of sin if we want to reach eternal life.Mortifying ourselvesThe epistle of today's Mass is all about carrying on this crucial fight for our eternal lives. St. Paul compares it both to a race and to a fight. And he tells us what he does to fight the fight: “I chastise my body and bring it into subjection”.

(2Sm.7:18-19,24-29; Ps.132:1-2,3-5,11-14,Lk.1:32; Mk.4:21-25) "If your sons keep my covenant and the decrees which I shall teach them, their sons, too, forever shall sit upon your throne." Yes, "the Lord has chosen Zion; He prefers her for His dwelling." His blessings are upon His Church and its people, for "the Lord swore to David a firm promise from which He will not withdraw: 'Your own offspring I will set upon your throne,'" and Jesus completes that promise by establishing the New Jerusalem in His Name. But we must exhibit the "anxious care" David has shown for the preservation and promotion of the house which is ours through this Son of David and fulfillment of God's promise. If "the eye is the lamp of the body," as Jesus has said elsewhere in the gospels (Mt.6:22), then we must say with David: "I will give my eyes no sleep, my eyelids no rest, till I find a place for the Lord." Always our light should be shining forth; always we should be looking to "make our call and election permanent" (as Peter has elsewhere stated – 2Pt.1:10) – always we must seek to serve Him, if ever we wish to dwell with Him. For as Jesus says so poignantly to the crowd today: "Is a lamp acquired to be put under a bushel basket or hidden under a bed? Is it not meant to be put on a stand?" Thus He encourages us to bring our light "out into the open," to let it shine forth for all to see. For then it shall be blessed. "Listen carefully" now to what the Lord says further: "In the measure you give you shall receive." Here is a golden rule which must be understood and practiced. For it is so that the more we share the gifts the Lord places in our hearts and at our hands, the greater these blessings grow. As we share our faith, more faithful do we become. As we speak of Him, the more do we understand of Him. In giving ourselves away for others and the sake of the kingdom, we find ourselves present in His light. And so do we grow. And so is our place in His house assured. And so we shall dwell with Him forever. Let us pray with David in our first reading, brothers and sisters: "Bless the house of your servant that it may be before you forever," that what the Lord has promised each of us through the Son of David may come to light. As David simply asks the Lord to accomplish what He has graciously vowed to do – "Confirm for all time the prophecy you have made concerning your servant and his house" – let us beg the Lord to grant the same to His Church for the salvation of all souls who worship Him in truth and serve Him in strength. Alleluia. ******* O LORD, dwell in us as you have promised that we might shine your light forth. YHWH, who are we that you bless us with a place in your kingdom, that you shine your eternal light in our eyes? How can we know you, how can we even approach you, we who are but useless servants….? And yet you make us your sons. Let us cherish the blessing you give us and shine the light you provide. Your House is a house for all peoples, LORD, and all peoples you would draw into your sanctuary. The promise you made to David comes to us all through the Son you place upon his throne. Now that Jesus is with us, help us to be as generous as you and serve to extend your blessing to all men. O what a blessing it is to share your love with others! Let us not be afraid or hide your light away. All we have let us give, O LORD, for all we have is a gift from you and it is increased only when we give it to others. May all come into your presence.

Sean McDermott fired! Can the timing be worse? John Harbaugh and Kevin Stefanski just signed with the Giants and Falcons. Oops? And while everyone is sad today for Josh Allen no one has shed a tear for CJ Stroud. Is it because he tried to big bro Caleb Williams? Maybe. Meanwhile, there's tough and then there's Bo Nix making a throw after his bone snapped. The hashtag #winitforbo has become a rallying cry for the Broncos. Speaking of cry, the Chicago fans had the highest of highs and then a quick fall back to earth. They're still sobbing a day later. We don't blame them either. Then our good friend and former NFL lineman Geoff Schwartz jumps in and gets deep into religion. Yes, religion. He says it's the key to prep yourself for the violence of a football game. Alleluia! December 31, 2025Today's Reading: Luke 12:35-40Daily Lectionary: Isaiah 60:1-22; Luke 1:39-56“Blessed are those servants whom the master finds awake when he comes…You also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Luke 12:37, 40)In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.Awake and ready! These are the words our Lord Jesus uses to describe the mission of His disciples, you and I included. In other words, Christ Jesus has served us with His everlasting love and mercy given on the cross, and He has summoned us to Christian vigilance. How different it is in the world on this day they call “New Year's Eve.” The past is drowned in licentiousness and over-indulgence in libations, the future is ushered in with revelry, and the next day brings the same old-same old. The same sinner led astray by the same sins and the same empty promises. Christian vigilance is different, though; it is a sanctified sobriety! When we hear the word “sober,” it's easy to think it means somber, overly serious, or no fun. But go back to those words of our Lord, “Awake and ready.” To be awake means your eyes are open; open to the truth of the Gospel, open to the truth of what is pleasing in the sight of the Lord, and open to the joy of eternity with Christ. You are not lulled with the sleep of sin or the numbing pleasures of a passing era because your eyes are on the splendid promise of Christ Jesus. To be ready means that your eyes are not only opened, but you are dressed in your baptismal identity as servants of righteousness. Your belt tightened, your lamp of faith lit, and your hands ready to serve Him in the places He has given you responsibility. Jesus is not calling us to earn our salvation in watchfulness, but to live as those who by grace, belong to Jesus the master, and to live as those who know the joy that is coming. For when the Master returns, it is He who will dress Himself in action and serve us. This passage is not just a warning; it is a joyful promise of what is to come. He will serve us with resurrected bodies. He will serve us by gathering us unto His presence forever. In the Name + of Jesus. Amen.“Wake, awake, for night is flying,” The watchmen on the heights are crying; “Awake, Jerusalem, arise!” Midnight hears the welcome voices And at the thrilling cry rejoices; “Oh, where are ye, ye virgins wise?” The Bridegroom comes, awake! Your lamps with gladness take! Alleluia! With bridal care Yourselves prepare To meet the Bridegroom, who is near.” (LSB 516:1)Author: Rev. Matthew Synnott, associate pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church, Peoria, Illinois.Audio Reflections Speaker: Rev. Richard Heinz, pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lowell, IN.Work through the first ten chapters of Matthew and learn more about who Jesus is. As you move through this study, you'll ponder the theological, practical, and historical considerations of the text. With ample room for personal notes, this study will have you feeling confident in your understanding of Matthew's Gospel. The Big Picture | Rev. 7:9–17 | A Great Multitude from Every Nation All Saints' Day calls us to see “the big picture” of what God is building—a communion of saints gathered forever around the Lamb. Like the builders of the great Cathedral of Chartres, who labored their whole lives without seeing the completed church, Christians often see only a small part of God's grand design. Yet faith looks beyond the dust and struggle to the finished work of Christ. John's vision in Revelation 7 shows a great multitude from every nation standing before the throne—those who have come out of great tribulation and been washed in the blood of the Lamb. These saints did not live easy lives, but through faith in Christ they now rest in His peace. The Beatitudes remind us that true blessing is not found in worldly comfort or success, but in belonging to Jesus, even amid suffering. The hymn For All the Saints proclaims this comfort: the saints are not gone, but at home with the Lord, awaiting the resurrection. The goal of faith is not a “blessed life,” but a blessed death—dying in Christ's forgiveness and rising to everlasting life. Through Baptism, Absolution, and the Holy Supper, we are already joined to that victory. Here on earth, the Church militant struggles, but it is never alone. At the altar, heaven and earth meet; the saints and angels worship with us in one eternal song: “This is the feast of victory for our God!” Like Michelangelo painting the Sistine Chapel, we see only pieces of the picture now. But when Christ returns and the scaffolding of this world falls away, we will see the masterpiece complete—the redemption of all God's people. Then we, too, will join the countless host singing, “Alleluia, Alleluia!” ----- Worship Times Sunday – 8:00 & 10:45 a.m. Monday – 6:30 p.m. https://trinitysheboygan.org https://facebook.com/trinitysheboygan We are a congregation of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Hymn 463 - For All the Saints

This weekend we will be celebrating "All Saints" weekend. The Christian Church has, for centuries, focused on the Holy Christian Church on November 1st. This includes both the saints whom the LORD has called out of this world as well as the saints who continue to fight the good fight of faith in this present life. We will be looking at both aspects of the Holy Christian Church in our worship this weekend. Hymn 463 is a beautiful description of the Holy Christian Church through both the Church Triumphant and the Church Militant. The believers (saints) who have gone before us, leave an example for us in who are fighting the battle today. Their faith is an encouragement to us in both their victories and in their suffering. The Apostle Paul wrote in 1 Timothy 6:12: "Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed the good confession in the presence of many witnesses." The hymnwriter described the unity of all believers in Christ by faith when he writes:  O blest communion, fellowship divine, We feebly struggle, they in glory shine; Yet all are one in Thee, for all are Thine. Alleluia! David states in Psalm 22:4-5: "Our fathers trusted in You; They trusted, and You delivered them. They cried to You, and were delivered; They trusted in You, and were not ashamed." This is our confidence as well. We too can trust in the LORD, and be certain of the victory that Jesus has won for us. That is why Paul could encourage young Timothy: "You therefore must endure hardship as a good soldier of Jesus Christ" (2 Timothy 2:3). We are engaged in a great battle as Christians. At times the fight is fierce and at times it feels like it will never end. "But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ" (1 Corinthians 15:57). Worship with us this weekend as the LORD assures us of the victory HE has won for His saints through Jesus, and as we are encouraged for remaining faithful, true and bold in the faith of faith!

Isaiah 65:17–25 (Listen) New Heavens and a New Earth 17   “For behold, I create new heavens    and a new earth,  and the former things shall not be remembered    or come into mind.18   But be glad and rejoice forever    in that which I create;  for behold, I create Jerusalem to be a joy,    and her people to be a gladness.19   I will rejoice in Jerusalem    and be glad in my people;  no more shall be heard in it the sound of weeping    and the cry of distress.20   No more shall there be in it    an infant who lives but a few days,    or an old man who does not fill out his days,  for the young man shall die a hundred years old,    and the sinner a hundred years old shall be accursed.21   They shall build houses and inhabit them;    they shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit.22   They shall not build and another inhabit;    they shall not plant and another eat;  for like the days of a tree shall the days of my people be,    and my chosen shall long enjoy1 the work of their hands.23   They shall not labor in vain    or bear children for calamity,2  for they shall be the offspring of the blessed of the LORD,    and their descendants with them.24   Before they call I will answer;    while they are yet speaking I will hear.25   The wolf and the lamb shall graze together;    the lion shall eat straw like the ox,    and dust shall be the serpent's food.  They shall not hurt or destroy    in all my holy mountain,”      says the LORD. Order of Service: - Prelude - Psalmody: P: Alleluia! Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers: C: Praise Him and highly exalt him forever. Alleluia! P: Be merciful to me, O Lord, for I cry to You all day long. C: For you, Lord, are good and ready to forgive. P: You are abundant in mercy to all those who call upon You. C: Bow down Your ear, O Lord, hear me; for I am poor and needy. All: Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and shall be forevermore. Amen. P: Alleluia! Blessed be the Lord God of our fathers: C: Praise Him and highly exalt him forever. Alleluia! - Hymn 483 - Who Knows When Death May Overtake Me: vv. 1 - 4 - John 11:38-44: Then Jesus, again groaning in Himself, came to the tomb. It was a cave, and a stone lay against it. Jesus said, “Take away the stone.” Martha, the sister of him who was dead, said to Him, “Lord, by this time there is a stench, for he has been dead four days.” Jesus said to her, “Did I not say to you that if you would believe you would see the glory of God?” Then they took away the stone from the place where the dead man was lying. And Jesus lifted up His eyes and said, “Father, I thank You that You have heard Me. And I know that You always hear Me, but because of the people who are standing by I said this, that they may believe that You sent Me.” Now when He had said these things, He cried with a loud voice, “Lazarus, come forth!” And he who had died came out bound hand and foot with graveclothes, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them, “Loose him, and let him go.” - Devotion - Prayer - Hymn 483 - Who Knows When Death May Overtake Me: vv. 6, 8, 10, 11 - Blessing - Postlude Service Participants: Chaplain Don Moldstad (Preacher), Jack DePrey (Organist)

by Elder Buddy Abernathy (preached on April 16, 2025) In today’s sermon in our Revelation series, we find a “great voice” of “much people” praising God with complete unity, crying out “Alleluia”! The basis of their praise was “salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God.” Join us as we learn more about this fourfold alleluia giving...
