We are all looking to discover what our true purpose in life is. We are constantly searching for our “calling.” Our Book of the Month for January, dives into just that. This month we read Believe Bigger: Discover the Path to Your Life Purpose by Marshawn Evans Daniels. In the book, Marshawn dives into what she calls a “Purpose Map”, the path into finding your calling. She shares her own story, along with giving the reader tips and exercises to walk through their own “Purpose Map.” We met Marshawn at the Abound Conference put on by the author of the first book we discussed for our Creative Legacy Podcast book club, Karen Stott. We loved that conference and the speakers, but we were blown away by Marshawn and her talk on this Purpose Map. We knew we had to buy the book to dig even deeper! We were not disappointed either! There are so many takeaways and quotes we loved. Plus Marshawn gives you the space to really dig deep and see where you are at and where you are heading in finding your purpose Sarah's Takeaway It's hard to choose one takeaway, because Marshawn really made me think! I love that this book allows the space to do just that though. There are many spots where she tells you to stop, take a breath and to think about a prompt she gives that help you define how your life experiences, your talents, and gifts can allow you to move into your purpose. I walked away knowing myself, and feeling more confident than ever that I can step into the next stage of my purpose. Shaunae's Takeaway I'm obsessed with this book and Marshawn. This book is FULL of incredible information that will help you discover your purpose, no matter where you are at in life. My favorite part though has to be when she gets to the Influence stage. It helped me realize that I can start impacting others right now. I don't have to get to a certain level, I can start helping right where I'm at. I also loved that she challenges us to just start doing. Your calling isn't something that's told to you. It comes when you go out into the world and start experimenting. Meaningful Quotes: “Chaos is often God's way of inviting us to step into our calling” “God loves us too much to leave us or lose us, so instead he splits us so that true significance can flow from within us” “If you allow yourself to settle for less, no one is obligated to stop you” “Having fun is important, because finding your calling starts with committing to joy.” “You don't find your calling on the sidelines. You find it once you're in it. It's not something to be explained. It's something to be explored. Destiny is not an intellectual exercise. It's experimental.” “God has called every woman to lead. A life of influence and impact is the very center of feminine purpose.” Find The Creative Legacy Podcast Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook • The Creative Legacy Podcast Group Find Sarah Online • Website • Instagram • Facebook • YouTube Find Shaunae Online: • Website • Instagram • Facebook

How to Stay Productive While Working from Home with Shaunae Teske & Sarah Schrader We've all been there - we start our business thinking, "This is great! I'll finally have the freedom to do what I want when I want." And it's great for a week or two. But then we realize we actually have to get stuff done on a consistent basis. Figuring out how to be your own boss and stay productive when there are a thousand things around the house calling for your attention can be a job in and of itself. But with a little practice and some discipline, you too can be a productive work-from-home entrepreneur! In this episode my guests, Shaunae Teske & Sarah Schrader, and I share some of our experiences and tips on how to actually stay productive when you work from home, how to create routines for success and remember to eat and take breaks, even how to create a schedule that allows you to be present during "work" time and present during "life" time. Shaunae Teske & Sarah Schrader, are the co-creators of the creative business owner focused Creative Legacy podcast, which focuses on helping creative entrepreneurs build their business while leading a life of intention, joy, and adventure. Separately, they are successful business owners - Sarah a brand and marketing graphic designer and Shaunae a photographer & educator. And today they are sharing all their secrets for staying productive while working from home. In this episode... The struggles we face when we work from home (complete with anecdotes from Sarah & Shaunae) How to keep a schedule and why it's so important Why you need to remember to eat and take breaks and how to remember to take them How to stay accountable and productive when you don't have a boss directing your work Creating morning and nighttime routines to set you up for success + what Sarah & Shaunae's routines look like How to separate your office and your home space - even if you don't have a separate room to work in How to set and communicate your schedule and boundaries with those that share a living space with you. How to plan for time off - vacations, important events, self-care, etc. - and why you should be taking time off even as a new business owner I give myself permission to... take a break midday to refuel my body and rest my brain. Quotes "Just because you work from home, doesn’t mean you can’t have a schedule." "Try to figure out the times throughout the day when you’re most productive." "A lot of people have the most brainpower in the morning." "Having a deadline is helpful for you and your clients." "It’s important to keep your main tasks in front of you all day long."
In our second episode, we discuss the importance of finding your “why” in your business. When you find your “why” you can then use it to motivate your decision making in every aspect of your business. Your “why” can shift with your life so it's always important to check in with yourself every few years. Hosts, Sarah and Shaunae, talk about their why's and how it has helped them in their businesses. Finding Your “Why” It's so important to discover what the “why” behind your business is. No one chooses to build a business just for the fun of it. Discovering your “why” becomes your driving force in everything you do. Everyone's whys are different and that's what makes our businesses unique. An Exercise in Finding Your “Why:” Say aloud or write on a piece of paper what your business title is. Then say or write “why?” Keep going until you can't go anything further. Your why is an integral part of who you are and what the mission for your business is all about. If you are having a difficult time, ask a friend to help. Our Personal Whys Shaunae became a photographer because she fell in love with telling the stories of people. She found people absolutely fascinating and wanted their memories to be preserved. She wants them to have a legacy to leave behind. Not just her own legacy, but she wanted the people she photographed to have photos to remember their legacy too. After experiencing a lot of loss in her life, her why shifted into a deeper meaning. She wanted to tell the stories of people so we remember them after they are gone. It was always about documenting a legacy that started with love. Sarah had a dream of being an entrepreneur from a young age, but didn't know in what way that would take shape. After finishing a few semesters undecided at university, she found design and fell in love with it, realizing that she had always lived in a creative space. From always drawing from a young age, to taking a fashion and interior design course, being the photography editor of her high school yearbook (Shaunae was too!) and also taking a website design class. In developing her why, she realized that she is a problem solver who loves to help other people tell their story and their brand, and the best way she can do that is in a creative way.
