She's also the host of the Branded by Bernel Podcast where she shares branding tips and obsesses over the details so you don't have to. And Today Bernel is sharing her top 3 ways you can grow your business outside of social media. Sponsor: Táve Receive an extended 60 day free trial of Táve at https://www.lightdarkco.com/tave (Lightdarkco.com/tave) Look for ways to grow your business but also ways that you can balance your life too. Find areas that you can automate, and schedule some self care. You can't take care of your business well if you aren't taking care of yourself well. One of the main reasons you should be looking for ways to grow your business outside of social media is because social media can be very mentally exhausting. You can spend a lot of time on social media on your captions, on recording your reels, planning out content and you don't always see a reward for all your hard work. One area you can focus on is referrals. If you are wondering how to get referrals from your clients, just ask for them. You'd be surprised what people want to do if you just ask. Give your clients incentives or referral links for perks when they send people your way. You can even send them a questionnaire to help them formulate a review that would help lead more potential clients to you. You can talk yourself up all day, but when potential clients hear about your services from a trusted friend, they will act on that referral much more often and with more trust in your experience. A lead magnet is a freebie or highly discounted item that you use to to draw people in like a magnet. You can use these to attract potential clients, provide them with value, and get them on your email list. Provide your email list with valuable tips that speak to their pain points. You can place your lead magnets in many different pages. A couple locations that get the most interaction are on your services page, and your resources page. On your services page it tells them that you see they are at least interested in working with you, and then you can hit them extra value with your freebie. If you have your lead magnet as a pop-up, place that pop-up on your about page or services page, not on your home page. You will get a much higher click rate being on a secondary page. Another great way to grow outside of social media is to network. Meet other professionals at events, ask to be a guest on a podcast, attend your local Rising Tide Society (come join mine if you're in the area), and go to conferences to network nationally and internationally too. Make a list of 3 clients you enjoyed working with, reach out to them and let them know that you loved working with them and you are currently adding some referrals and reviews on your website and you'd love if they could provide you one. This is what gets her clients off the marketing hamster wheel and on the path to sustainable marketing success. On this episode, we talk about how you can use the information from Google Analytics to bring more traffic to your website & get more qualified leads in your inbox. She shares with us her 3-question framework that will empower you to achieve your goals & make sense of the data from Google Analytics. If you know what action you need to take, you can begin to ask the right questions and use the data to your advantage. For Google Analytics, there are 3 basic questions you need to start with. First, how much traffic are you getting? For local, events-based small businesses, you need to see at least 1200 sessions a month. Next, you need to find out if the traffic you're getting comes from the right people. Are they qualified leads? If you're an event pro, it's the traffic you'll want will be in marrying age, about 25-35 years old. Your metrics will also skew to a specific gender depending on your industry. And then, you'll want to make sure it's local traffic. As a Greenville-based business, you want to make sure most of your traffic is coming from Greenville or nearby cities. Think about your target audience and who is typically hiring your services. That's the kind of demographics you want to see on your page. The third basic question to ask about your data is are the people visiting my site interested in working with me? You can tell this through which pages they're spending the most time on. If they want to work with you, it should be your services page, your investment page, your inquiry page, your about page. If a lot of traffic comes from Pinterest, it might be your blog page. But this is where it starts to get dicey. If they're just visiting your blog page and not the other pages, it's likely they're just going to your site for inspiration and not because they actually want to work with you. What about website designs that are one page only? Christie says to think about the average time someone would spend on your page to thoughtfully engage with the content. That's what you want to see on the site. If they're clicking away fast, they probably aren't interested in working with you. One thing you can do to increase engagement is to have a video on your site.

What a f*cking way to end the month, and what a f*cking time to be a woman in the United States of America (or literally anyone who isn't a cishet white man)... The release of this episode is interestingly timely because the day we recorded was only hours after the horrific domestic terrorist attack at a supermarket in a predominantly Black neighborhood in Buffalo, NY. This episode is full of reflections and learning with our guest, Leah Weinberg, who joined us to talk about self-awareness and living in the moment.    Have you ever stopped whatever it is you're doing and just observed? Like really looking at your surroundings, feeling the wind blow into your face, savoring the feel of the keyboard on your fingertips. No? Well, you should! Don't let every moment in your life pass by in a blur and leave you thinking, “Where has all that time gone?”   In this episode, we'll be talking about exactly how to make the most out of every moment in your life. We're joined by our lovely guest from Color Pop Events, Leah Weinberg, as we navigate self-awareness and how to harness it to beat the burnout monster.    In this episode, you'll learn:    A mantra to remind yourself to be in the present. Why self-awareness is the first step. How to ignore what other people are doing. You are uniquely you. Ways to be mindful of hospitality. How to surround yourself with other business owners. Why to put systems and processes in place from the beginning.   To see more of Leah's works and what she does, visit her website.   Here's a sneak peek of the episode:    [1:59] That's not where self development happens. That's not where growth happens. You need to live in the present moment. I encourage you to take up a meditation practice to do that.   [11:00] The goal is to realize that you're gonna have a long term relationship with burnout. And it's just about trying to stay in balance as long as possible and giving yourself grace.   [15:28] I love that just self awareness and being like, “okay, I'm not a PMS thing. I'm burned out.” Like for me PMS and burnout have a very similar sense of you're tired and cranky.   [18:44] My first tip is to have systems and processes in place from the beginning. And when you're first starting out, things like that aren't necessarily on your mind. And a time will come when you're going to need it.    [19:39] You don't have to have a formal operating manual but essentially, you should have enough documentation that you could hand somebody this packet of information and they would like you to franchise your business essentially, like think about your systems and processes.   [22:59] So number two is to surround yourself with other business owners. The people, your community, who you surround yourself with is just so incredibly important.   TUNE IN: APPLE PODCASTS | SPOTIFY | STITCHER Meghan Lynch is a Boston based destination wedding and elopement photographer specializing in adventurous celebrations of love around the world. Her photography business inspires wanderlust couples to get married in the locations that set their souls on fire whether that's in their hometown of historic Boston or at the base of the Swiss Alps. She has shot over 100 weddings globally and considers her style classic and candid. Meghan's Start Meghan talks about how she got started as a destination and elopement wedding photographer. When she was younger, Meghan always had a camera on her and loved taking photos of her family and friends. In college, she majored in media studies and digital arts. Meghan recommends googling photographers you admire and contacting them to see if you can be an assistant or shadow a wedding. By doing so, she learned editing styles, networked, and learned from the best photographers to help her avoid pitfalls along the way. Finding Her Niche Meghan shares about her love of wedding photography. Every couple and venue spot are different because each wedding experience is unique to each couple. Meghan traveled a lot before getting into the wedding photography business, and did not shoot a wedding on her own until she was 100% confident in photography and traveling experience. She shoots both domestically and internationally.  Planning and Preparing  Covid aside, Meghan and Rachael talk about the specifics of traveling from a photographer's perspective. Meghan shares about her specific traveler insurance, international carry on camera case, and suitcase for her photography gear. She never arrives the day before the wedding to avoid weather or accident related delays, and she uses the extra time to acclimate and head to the venue to go through the wedding route beforehand.  Photographing Elopements Meghan explains that while more traditional weddings tend to have more guests, intimate weddings and elopements have around 25 people or under, and the bride might not wear white wedding dresses. One of the main differences in photography is elopement photography involves location scouting. For smaller weddings, Meghan creates a day around something the couple loves because they oftentimes value experiences over things.  The Changing Definition of Elopement Meghan talks about how most people picture a couple running away to elope for various reasons, but this is not necessarily the case anymore. Elopements have begun trending due to COVID-19, and Meghan understands that couples still want to place value on their wedding day, so she takes care to capture the full day for them.  Dealing with Pressure Meghan talks about how on the elopement side of photography, when it is just her and the couple, there is more pressure because there aren't hundreds of guests snapping pictures the whole day. She is the sole person responsible for documenting their story, so she makes sure she is organized, comes prepared with two cameras, and makes sure she is a master in different parts of wedding photography before going solo.  COVID-19 Impact Meghan shares that she did not travel internationally in 2020, and each state had different wedding party size restrictions that were constantly changing. She tried to help relieve couples' stress and found the beauty of things in the backyard.  It's all in the Details Meghan talks about the little details she provides to bring joy to the couples she works with. She loves photographing couples, capturing their love story, and naivating them through the experience. Meghan personalizes a note, vow book, and something unique for the couple. She created a wedding and elopement guidebook with tips and ideas. She also checks in about the details of the wedding including updated guest count and the time meals will be served. She also sends out a gift card and checks in about 2 weeks before the wedding.  Favorite Location Meghan talks about meeting a couple on a hike in Switzerland then photographing their wedding the following year.  Editing Tips Meghan suggests that aspiring photographers discover the editing style they like, utilize user presets, and try Photo Mechanic software to save time while editing. She also suggests joining relevant Facebook groups and the Rising Tide Society for photographers both of which allow for communications and recommendations from other photographers.  Getting Into the Business Meghan talks about the need for aspiring photographers to assist, meet, and intern with photographers they admire online. She suggests taking an online photography course or reading photography blogs. To get into destination weddings, Meghan suggests taking road trips to areas where you want to shoot and hold free model calls. If you are flying throughout the USA or internationally, look on Google Flights or scottscheapflights to find affordable flight options. Updates and Connecting With Meghan Meghan talks about her recently launched print shop featuring landscapes and cityscapes as well as her downloadable pdf about how to become a second photographer at weddings to help you build your portfolio. Praise lives in San Francisco, California, where she does silly dances to loosen up female entrepreneurs during their personal brand photoshoots, builds her Google map locations of colors around the city to create eye-catching content for brands such as Lululemon and Adidas, and leads workshops for organizations such as The Golden State Warriors and BEI Hotel. Her photos have been featured in Vogue, Forbes, TechCrunch and the San Francisco Chronicle, and her project Ethical Weddings won a 20 On The Rise award by the 60,000+ member Rising Tide Society. In today's episode, Praise and I talk about how to be confident and ditch the squirrel hands on camera, how to be your own Instagram husband, a powerful revenue source in PR often overlooked, and much more. Praise teaches me about a new beverage that in her words is a warm hug in your belly, and she walks us through an impromptu live confident exercise.  Highlights:Praise's photography studio ComePlum specializes in capturing go-getter women who are impacting the world.Photos matter: a good photo generates engagement. In order to achieve a successful photo, Praise wants to get to know the brand or person behind the photoshoot. She then uses her resources and the camera to tell their unique story. Praise recommends taking different types of photos, with different styles and formats. She also suggests creating templates and media kits that you can send every time someone asks for information about your brand. She tells us what photos we should look to capture in our next session. If you can't hire a photographer (although it is highly recommended), learn to DIY. Praise has an e-book with tips and explanations to help you take a good photo. She answers all the questions clients have asked her throughout the years, including what to do with your hands. As a photographer, Praise works to help her clients feel confident in front of the camera. Having worked with everyday people and supermodels, she knows that everyone feels insecure about something, and that's normal. She leads us through a few exercises to feel confident in front of the camera. What is your aesthetic? For Praise, to find your aesthetic you have to think about your brand and your values, define your audience and what you want them to feel when they see your pictures. Customer experience is key! Most of her clients have referred her to new ones. Praise discovered that cultivating a positive customer experience is more important than the talent of the photographer.
