Burnout is a very real topic that keeps popping up all over social media. Everyone is mentioning that we need to avoid it. They mention that we need to prevent it. They mention we need to do more self-care to prevent it. Yes; yes to all of these things, but what is burnout? Why is it happening and what can we do to overcome it? Over the last year, even while coaching the topic around avoiding burnout, I have learned that sometimes it is not avoidable. When certain life challenges arise, there are times that we will become more burnt out, emotionally and physically, than in other seasons. Our capacity changes, our minds change, our jobs change, and our personal life changes. One season, something that would not cause you burnout may end up causing you burnout. In this episode, I am diving a little deeper into burnout - the what, the how, and the how-to grow past!

Join me on the journey to create a healthier community by filling the world with more kindness.

    Ep55 The Importance of Connections

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 14, 2022 9:53

Each year, I pick a word to represent my intentions, goals and fuel my decisions about where I am headed. Over the last 5 years, I have picked mostly words that motivate me to climb in my career and level up in life. This year is different. After tackling a number of challenges in 2021, I learned a lot. I learned the power of people. I learned the power of community. I learned the power of love. Losing my mom was one of the hardest things I have ever endured, but the people in my life are the reason I came out the other side. I was overwhelmed with how many people reached out, sent flowers and food, picked up the phone and called, traveled across the country, and poured into my life to ensure my dad and I did not go through this process alone. There are things in life that come and go, but connections are not replaceable. Humans were not built to navigate life alone and the last 2 years have deeply challenged that. Humans were designed to be part of a community. We evolved to have family, friends, support, love, and compassion. Humans were meant to be in a village. The last two years have ripped that away. For the last two years, we have been told to isolate ourselves for our own safety. We also live in an instant world. A world where it has become easy to “communicate” by texting and liking a post on social media. We are in a culture where picking up the phone no longer exists. Deep connections and conversations have gone by the wayside. They have become less of a priority. Even when we are physically with people, a huge percentage of people are addicted to the scroll. Speaking of the scroll, if you haven't gone into your phone and checked your screen time it is terrifying. I was shocked the first time I looked at how much I am on my phone a day- it was embarrassing! Here is my challenge to you- spend true quality time with people you care deeply about. Uninterrupted, focused time. Put your phone away, have meaningful conversations, and be present. No more scrolling, no more checking emails. None of it. Being present has a lot of positives in your personal life, work-life, relationships- everything. I have never been a huge fan of the term “work-life balance” because I really don't believe that it's something that's possible. What I do deeply believe in is work-life presence. When I say that, I mean being fully present in your work and then in your personal life. This means hard, firm boundaries. When you are at work you are 100% work, when you are doing life, you are 100% life- No checking work emails that can wait until tomorrow at the dinner table alright? So let me come full circle here. My 2022 word of the year is Connection. When I broke down what I wanted out of the next year, it really came down to wanting to be present and connected with other people. I want to connect with people on a different level. I want to appreciate, love, and know people. Let me repeat that, I want to truly KNOW people. I don't want to just know where they work and how many kids they have- I want to deeply understand their background, who they are, and why they believe what they believe. When you take time to connect with people, you may realize that we aren't all that different. You may find things you find that are similar or totally different. You may discover that someone you thought you were friends with is someone you don't know much about at all. You may uncover people's struggles, weaknesses, and vulnerabilities. Which is all a good thing. Because like I mentioned earlier- we are humans and supposed to be in a community. We are supposed to love and support each other. Drop a comment on social media and let me know what your 2022 word of the year is. I am so in love with learning what people are aiming towards. I also want to chat with you. I want to connect with you. If you are in my area, let's grab coffee or dinner. Let's just chat and hang out. I want to know you, too!

This is a HARD pill to swallow as an Enneagram 3. I find accomplishment in finishing processes. I am a high achiever. I always find ways to accomplish the goals I set for myself. This year was different. Losing my mom changed everything. I lost my drive, my will, my creativity, and my energy. I lost my purpose. I didn't check 9 of the 10 goals off my list. I didn't launch the magazine. I didn't take the podcast to the next level. I didn't hit revenue goals; in fact, I stopped all revenue completely. I didn't create the event. Here's what I did learn. 1. I learned that my worth isn't tied to my business. 2. I learned that I didn't lose any support when I stopped creating. 3. I learned that I have poured more into my business than my family (that's a harsh pill to swallow). 4. I learned that I have the best people in my life. 5. I have learned that my success isn't tied to social media posts or revenue- I can do this business purely because it brings me joy. 6. I learned the actual meaning of pivot. 7. I learned that it's ok to have seasons where your “day job” can be your main focus and it's just as badass as owning your own business. It's ok if you didn't accomplish your goals. I bet you learned as much or more than you set out to learn, you just have to dig into them.

One day I realized I didn't believe in myself. I still struggle with it at times. But over the last year, I have fired myself back up to deeply believe in what I am doing. I was hesitant to start anything new. I was hesitant to create change. I was hesitant to do anything different. I was scared. I lacked confidence. I had all the skills in my toolbox and was really fortunate to learn skills like public speaking, leadership, following dreams, and doing really big things fairly young. When I was 16 I was invincible with my dreams. I was in 4-H, running a music venue, on a youth city council for my hometown, building parks, and living a life purely to positively impact the world. When I was just over 20 years old I lost that. I started fearing what people would say. I feared what would happen if I tried to change. I feared trying new things. I worried about my image. I let things on social media stop me. I gained weight. I fell into a career and just ran with it and then suddenly didn't know how to change, switch things up or follow my purpose. Last year when we moved to Arizona I left my stable career in the middle of COVID after Eric was laid off. We sold our house and we picked up and relocated. I switched careers to work in the fitness industry, at a time when the entire fitness industry was shut down. I became deeply passionate about the nutrition and fitness industry over the last few years but never knew how to make it a full-time gig. I coached nutrition on the side and obviously created the podcast but I fell short in believing I could be in the fitness industry full time. I was deeply concerned that someone wouldn't trust someone with “my body”. Here are the steps I took when I stood in my own way. 1. I stopped giving a crap about what other people would say. 2. I decided to believe in myself. 3. I remembered my why. 4. I unfollowed everyone on social media that made me feel less than I was. 5. I started believing in others.

Having a limiting mindset keeps you from seeing growth or change. You may fear change. A limiting mindset means you are too focused on the results and are constantly seeking approval. With a growth mindset, you are open to growth and development, you value the process and learning, you embrace failure, and you know that the best is always on the horizon. You are willing to take risks, even if it means falling on your face in order to learn something really awesome. Take these 6 steps to work towards developing your growth mindset! 1. Play Episode Listen Later Dec 31, 2020 13:23

Let’s Recap 2020. Most would say that 2020 was the worst year of their life. We differ from that opinion. Yes, we struggled. Yes, Eric lost his job. I went through the most painful thing I have ever had to do at a job- I had to lay off almost my entire team. (Let’s not mention the day that Eric got laid off, I had to lay off my team. Talk about a day full of fear and so much sobbing). Yes, we uprooted everything. Yes, I will be honest, we moved fast because we were scared. It was so uncomfortable. We left our friends. We left behind our family and friends. We left our security systems. We left our gym. We sold our house. Let me tell you why all of that is positive. Without all of this, we never would have re-branded. We never would have pushed. We never would have chased something bigger. We never would have gotten so uncomfortable. We went all in and I am so excited. Go Big in 2021. You have nothing standing in your way. You have a new year ahead of you. You spent a year in growing pains, so let’s go up and move forward with something bigger. Here is how I am approaching it. Make a vision board. If you want to constantly be pushing towards your dreams, you MUST see them. You must see them every single day. Rip up magazines, draw pictures, write words. Create a vision board of your 2021 and where you want to see yourself grow and go. Pick a Word or Phrase of the Year. My 2021 phrase of the year is “grounded and growing”. Having a word of the year gives you a measuring stick to base your decisions upon. For 2020, my word of the year was “level up”. I turned to “level up” whenever I needed to make a choice. When things got hard, I went back to my word to decide how to pivot. I can honestly say that I am proud of how I leveled up in 2020. For 2021, you will see me intentionally base my decisions on the “grounded and growing” mindset. Write Out Your Goals I am writing out three goals. These three goals have to be BIG. Stop dreaming and setting goals that are small and achievable. If you only set goals for yourself that you know you can achieve, you are not stretching yourself hard enough. For each major goal, write out a few micro-goals that will get you closer to that major goal. Let me break this down with an example. Major Goal: I want to run a half marathon in January 2022. Micro Goal 1: I will run 3 miles a day, 2x a week for 4 weeks. Micro Goal 2: I will run 4 miles a day, 3 days a week. Micro Goal 3: I will run 5 miles a day, 3 days a week. Micro Goal 4: I will run 20 miles a week Micro Goal 5: I will run 10 miles in a single run! Share your vision boards, your goals, and your word on your social media. Tell people what you are doing. Manifest it. Live it. Breathe it. Let’s put 2020 behind up and chase the biggest goals in 2021! Let’s freaking get after it!!!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2020 9:51

It’s pretty obvious that we all seem to celebrate gratitude a little more around Thanksgiving but I really, strongly believe that we should all be focusing on gratitude a little more. Gratitude helps me set my intent and my mind for the day. It helps me set my attitude. You get to choose your attitude and mindset for the day. Are you showing up with a grateful heart or a negative, angry heart? Are you showing up being grateful in your interaction with others today? So many people ask me constantly how I am so positive and happy. Let me give a side note that I am not always happy and positive, but I do actively work to become more positive, happier, and more optimistic. I have struggled deeply with anxiety and depression. I have woken up on the wrong side of the bed. I struggle hard, too. It’s ok to struggle. It is completely ok to not be ok. What has helped me more than anything is that I always come back to gratitude to refocus and realize how much joy I really have around me. When I have a bad attitude, it is usually because I am struggling to find the things I am grateful for. When I have been screamed at by a customer at work, I can make the choice to be angry and snarky back to that person, or I can make the active choice to be grateful that they came into my day so that I can bring a little positivity. You get to make that choice. I journal gratitude every day and it’s impacted my life. When you are journaling your gratitude, don’t just write down the same three things every day and move on. Think every day about what you are truly grateful for. Think of new things every single day to journal down. Write down what you are grateful for and why. Do not overthink this. Think about the little moments during your past 24 hours that have brought you joy that you are grateful for. Maybe someone smiled in the car next to you. Maybe you have a really awesome person in your life that made dinner. Maybe laundry was done when you got home. Maybe you got an hour to yourself. Maybe you accomplished something at work you’ve been struggling with or working on. Maybe you ran for the first time in months and you are really freaking proud of your body. Throughout your day, focus on new things that make you happy and that you are grateful for. When you look through the eyes of gratitude, you will slowly realize how much joy there is in the world. Gratitude is an intention. It is something you can work hard at receiving, understanding, and embracing, or it is something you can turn a blind eye to and ignore. You can make the choice to accept the positive, beautiful, amazing things happening around you and for you. You get to decide how you want to view things. Make today beautiful. Keep Glowing.
