On this installment of Archinect Sessions, we’re sharing a conversation I had a couple of months ago with Sofia Borges and R. Scott Mitchell, the leaders of a design-build studio at USC that addressed one of the most pressing issues in Los Angeles today - homelessness.  The MADWORKSHOP Homeless Studio set out with the goal of addressing this city-wide crisis by developing a real-world architectural response. The initial motivation for the studio came from the founders of MADWORKSHOP, Mary and David Martin, who reached out to USC School of Architecture with the hope that the students would be able to come up with some practical, creative and buildable solutions of homelessness in Los Angeles. You can learn more about the studio in this feature we have previously published. Since the completion of the studio they have produced a book documenting the process and results in "Give Me Shelter." The book is currently available for purchase from ORO, the publisher, or on Amazon.  Our conversation ranges from discussing both Sofia and Scott’s complementary backgrounds, considerations for approaching this difficult and delicate problem in an academic environment, to thoughts on how architects can actually make a positive difference to this growing problem.

33rd São Paulo Biennial Pays Attention to Art

For the 33rd São Paulo Biennial, curator Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro challenges the norm. Rather than explore an overarching theme, he invited seven artists to curate exhibitions featuring their own art. Likewise, the twelve solo projects that he curated suggest we look closely at individual creative practices. Purposefully choosing not to direct our gaze, this biennial allows us to explore freely, to discover for ourselves the power of contemporary art. Biennial programming builds on this notion in a free audio guide, a digital publication that proposes viewing exercises and an international, public symposium. The three-day event brings together artists, scientists, critics, writers, and scholars for a deep dive into one of the major issues of our time: attention. Who controls it, why and how are just a few of the questions to be considered… Voices: Claudia Fontes, Sofia Borges, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro Sound Editor: Laura Spencer-Morris | Special Audio: Sebastián Castagna, Ex Situ, Tal Isaac Hadad, Récital pour un masseur, Mame-Diarra Niang, 11:11, Tamar Guimarães, The Rehearsal Related Episodes: Live from 32nd São Paulo Biennial, Sep 6, Sep 7, Sep 8, Anawana Haloba on Vanishing Cultures, Donna Kukama on Unfinished Stories, William Pope.L on Endurance, Jochen Volz on Living Uncertainty Related Links: 33rd São Paulo Biennial, Claudia Fontes, Sofia Borges, Wura-Natasha Ogunji, Gabriel Pérez-Barreiro, Mário Pedrosa, Goethe

Shelter has always been, and will always be, one of our critical human needs for survival. So I would be remiss if in a podcast seeking to uncover the core of how we were meant to live as human beings, I focused on cabins, tiny homes, and other stylish back-to-basics dwellings for upscale urbanites while ignoring an untenable truth I witness every day: That there are untold thousands of people living in our cities who, in fact, have no shelter at all. In Los Angeles alone, where the homeless population increased a staggering 23 percent in the past year and more than 50,000 people sleep on the streets every night, we are in the midst of a homelessness (really, houselessness) epidemic unprecedented in the course of human history. How have we, as a modern society, allowed homelessness to persist on this unimaginable scale? And how can we, as a modern society, begin to rectify it? This is the focus of my episode with LA-based writer, designer and architect Sofia Borges, director of the prestigious Martin Architecture and Design Workshop (MADWORKSHOP) and a faculty member at the USC School of Architecture, where she recently spearheaded the school’s first-ever advanced topics design studio on the homeless crisis in LA. The resulting project, Homes for Hope (a light-filled, rapidly deployable 92-square-foot modular microhouse for the homeless that could easily work as a backyard studio for the minimalist design enthusiast) won a 2017 Fast Company World Changing Ideas Award. Sofia has also authored and edited more than two dozen books on architecture and design, and as you will hear, is a true urban visionary. Here, she speaks passionately about the manifold possibilities for Homes for Hope, the scourge of NIMBYism, and the call for us all to be part of a sea change to combat unsustainable human suffering everywhere.
