As a special holiday gift to The Film Stage podcast feed, listen to a new Box Office Bonanza! Here we talk about random box office weekends and where they fit into our lives. The movies, the memories! This episode features Dan Mecca, Conor O'Donnell, Mitchell Beaupre, Jordan Raup, and Cory Everett. The box office weekend in question is July 21, 2000. The number one movie in the country was the Robert Zemeckis-directed, Clark Gregg-scripted, Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer-starring supernatural thriller What Lies Beneath. The number three movie was the second Pokémon feature film, Pokémon 2000. Gladiator was still in theaters, so was U-571. But at the start, we mount a passionate defense of the new Zemeckis epic Here, which has now arrived digitally. After that, we talk about Martin Lawrence movies. We talk about how horrible Greg Kinnear's character is in Amy Heckerling's Loser. We talk about Al Pacino's new autobiography Sonny Boy. The sport doc Michael Jordan to the Max gets some discussion. An Office Space reference is completely ignored! There are too many 9/11 jokes! How many? You'll have to listen to find out. We remember that great bit with Ben Stiller and Tom Cruise from the MTV Movie Awards (“He's Harmless”). There's an appreciation of Jesus' Son as well. There's a Saving Silverman reference, talk of yo-yos and Yu-Gi-Oh! There's a remembrance of that time The Perfect Storm and The Patriot came out the same weekend. Finally, for a few moments I'm convinced that nobody has been recording the podcast! There's a lot here, people! We're thankful for you listening to us have fun! We hope you have some fun too! Check out The Film Stage's 2024 Holiday Gift Guide and Cory Everett's slew of Cinephile books and games! Enjoy this episode and we welcome other interesting box office weekends to cover in the future. Stay tuned in 2025 for more podcast news from The Film Stage!

As a cinematographer himself, Holben used this extraordinary privilege to not only discuss the ins-and-outs of a particular movie being covered, but to "pick the brains" of the best cinematographers on the planet. This rather selfish approach to his journalism afforded Holben the chance to fill his creative toolbox with tips and techniques from the true masters of the art. These treasures of movie magic were printed in the pages of American Cinematographerover the past 27 years, but they have now all been collected into a single volume.Lessons From American Cinematographer brings the reader back to every interview and AC story highlighting those special tips and techniques that Holben learned. It's like opening a secret vault to a secret collection of tips and techniques handed down from the artisans of motion picture photography in your hands. A perfect companion to Holben's extremely popular Shot Craft series, Lessons From American Cinematographer provides the reader a lifetime of masterclasses in a single volume. This week I talk about a gamebook from Fervent Workshop called What Lies Beneath. It was designed by Chris Scaffidi and the art is by Jason Glover, who has also designed quite a few games of his own. In this gamebook, you wake up in a dungeon with no memory of who you are or what you are here. What's worse is you seem to have some sort of creepy cancerous growth on your arm. You need to get out of here and figure out what is going on. It's an interesting gamebook with some very novel mechanics. You get to play as one of 6 character classes. If you die, you can take any earnt experience points and apply them to the next character you make. Hopefully, this time you are able to survive long enough to get out of this dungeon. Sometimes we learn more from our mistakes than our successes - that's my story and I'm sticking to it this week! Narrative drive is an important storytelling principle to learn and this week's movie is an example of poor story structure resulting in terrible narrative drive. A mystery writer should have control of the information. Valerie's study of conflict triangles was more fruitful than my area of study this week. The conflict triangle is present and clear to see. -M"Narrative drive is all about information and the emotions it creates in the readers. “Why are you trying to do the Hitchcock stuff when your contemporary, Brian De Palma, is doing it much better? - Eric On this week's WHM, we're kicking off the Summer Blockbuster Extravaganza with a chat about the Robert Zemeckis ghost house domestic thriller, What Lies Beneath! Was this one of the last major Hollywood films to have middle-aged people being this horny? Would the movie have been better if they didn't confirm the existence of a ghost in the world of the story? Isn't it great seeing James Remar play an academic non-scumbag? How unsettling is it to see Harrison Ford wear a Rolling Stones t-shirt? And how many Hitchcock “riffs” can you cram into one movie before someone has a suit on their hands? PLUS: We take a count of how many Harrison Ford characters go… downtown! What Lies Beneath stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Harrison Ford, James Remar, Miranda Otto, Diana Scarwid, Ray Baker, Wendy Crewson, Amber Valletta, Micole Mercurio, and the great Joe Morton as Dr. Drayton; directed by Robert Zemeckis. Robert Zemeckis was one of the most prominent directors of the eighties and nineties. His string of hits is almost unmatched. Think about it - Romancing the Stone, the Back to the Future Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Forrest Gump, Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, etc. This is why it's so bizarre that a live-action Disney Pinocchio movie directed by Zemeckis and starring his best favorite leading man, Tom Hanks, was essentially dumped to streaming. It came and went without much fanfare, while it would have been a cinematic event fifteen years ago. WTF Happened? In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, we dig into Zemeckis' career, which began with the underrated pair I Wanna Hold Your Hand and Used Cars before Romancing the Stone made him an A-lister. We dig into how he was actually fired from Cocoon because the Fox brass thought Romancing the Stone would flop, leading to him making Back to the Future with pal Steven Spielberg. We dig into the then-impossible idea of mixing live-action and animation in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, show some love to Forrest Gump, and examine some underrated gems like Death Becomes Her.But WTF Happened to Robert Zemeckis? In the 2000s, Zemeckis became a proponent of Motion Capture technology, leading to The Polar Express and Beowulf, movies which are a little uncanny valley if you revisit them today. Even if he's not quite the mega-watt hitmaker he once was, with films like Welcome to Marwen being disastrous, he's still capable of making gems like the fantastic Denzel Washington movie Flight. In this episode of WTF Happened to this Celebrity, which is written (with Mathew Plale), narrated and edited by Taylor James Johnson, we dig into the director's life, legacy and future.

Hallie, Sarah, and John discuss this spooky, sexy thriller from Robert Zemeckis, starring THE Harrison Ford and the incomparable Michelle Pfeiffer -- who is absolutely electric in this extended homage to Hitchcock. There are some ghostly plot holes that we would fix in a 2023 remake -- but mostly, why is this film forgotten?? It shouldn't be! Please visit our website to download a transcript of this episode.
