Nous sommes en novembre 1924. C'est à cette époque que commence la publication d'une série de tracts intitulée « Correspondance ». Une aventure éditoriale que l'on considère comme étant la première manifestation du surréalisme en Belgique. A l'initiative de ce projet, on retrouve Camille Goemans et Marcel Lecomte, mais surtout Paul Nougé qui, quelques années plus tôt, a participé à la fondation du Parti communiste belge. Peu de temps après, Nougé rencontre les surréalistes français, Louis Aragon, André Breton et Paul Éluard, et signe, le 21 septembre 1926, une tribune intitulée « La Révolution d'abord et toujours » qui parait dans le journal communiste « L'Humanité ». On peut y lire : " Plus encore que le patriotisme, qui est une hystérie comme une autre, mais plus creuse et plus mortelle qu'une autre, ce qui nous répugne, c'est l'idée de Patrie qui est vraiment le concept le plus bestial, le moins philosophique dans lequel on essaie de faire entrer notre esprit. Nous sommes certainement des barbares, puisque une certaine forme de civilisation nous écœure." 1926 marque l'ébauche de la constitution du groupe surréaliste de Bruxelles avec l'arrivée de Louis Scutenaire et, bien sûr, René Magritte. La collaboration entre parisiens et bruxellois sera souvent très tendue. Plus tard encore les Wallons, avec notamment Achille Chavée, développeront leur propre mouvement. Les surréalistes belges veulent transformer le monde à partir du langage et de la représentation, leur activité va se développer sur près de soixante ans, couvrant trois générations. Le mouvement, dans son ensemble, par-delà les frontières, aura marquer durablement le vingtième siècle. Pourquoi ? Les Belges ont-ils cultivé leur particularisme ? Comprenons-nous bien leur héritage lorsque l'on parle, aujourd'hui, de « surréalisme à la belge » pour décrire la moindre situation incongrue, voire stupide ? Né en 1898 à Lessines, il déménage à Gilly avec sa famille, où l'étrange et le mystère marquent son enfance. Son arrière-grand-père, conteur d'histoires, éveille son imaginaire à travers des récits fascinants. Les paysages industriels, les terrils, et les anecdotes locales imprègnent son esprit. Les événements marquants, comme un ballon échoué sur le toit ou les chevaux épuisés des mines, deviennent des souvenirs fondateurs. Son adolescence à Châtelet est marquée par des rébellions, ses premiers dessins, et un intérêt grandissant pour l'art et le mystère. Ces années, empreintes d'émerveillement et de drames, dont la mort tragique de sa mère, façonnent l'artiste. The Magritte exhibition at the Art Gallery of New South Wales includes more than 100 works, most of which have never been exhibited in Australia before. Foundations of Amateur Radio Every now and then you come across an idea that throws you for a loop. It comes seemingly out of nowhere and once you've seen it, you cannot unsee it. It's a lot like a 1929 painting I like called "The Treachery of Images", also known as "Ceci n'est pas une pipe", or in English, "This is Not a Pipe" by Belgian surrealist painter René Magritte. If you're not familiar with it, it's a painting of a pipe, and by being a painting, it's not a pipe. Obviously. Before I go into the idea that rocked my world, I need to set the stage a little. There are several modes I've discussed before, WSPR, or Weak Signal Propagation Reporter, FT8 or Franke-Taylor design, 8-FSK modulation and plenty others. Each of these modes has one thing in common. They require that all participants are using the same time. That is, both sender and receiver need to agree on when "now" is for this to work. A WSPR signal takes 110.6 seconds, every 120 seconds, starting on the even minute. It requires that the transmitter and receiver agree on the time within about 2 seconds. An FT8 signal takes 12.6 seconds within a 15 second window. It requires an accuracy of about 20 milliseconds. These timekeeping requirements are pretty easy to achieve in a modern network connected computer. You turn on a thing called NTP, or Network Time Protocol, point it at an appropriate clock and off you go. If you're not connected to the Internet, then things get squirrelly pretty quickly. You could buy yourself a GPS, set up a link between the GPS and your computer, run some software and use the GPS clock to synchronise time on your computer. Of course, this requires a GPS, a serial cable, software, configuration, battery power to keep the GPS running and probably a couple of other things. I've never done this, but given what I'm about to share, I don't think I ever will. What if you used a WSPR, or an FT8 signal, from someone else to synchronise your clock? If you've ever launched WSJT-X, you'll have seen a column marked DT, that's Delta Time, or the difference in time between the clock on your computer and that of the transmitter. If you could read the difference and use it to adjust your clock, you'd be in business. Charles NK8O pointed me to a GitHub Gist with a single little Python script, written by Peter K6PLI. It updates the clock on your computer using the Delta Time from WSJT-X. I'd point you at the script from here, but 3a730575, and 24 more characters, and that's just one element of the URL, doesn't run quite off the tongue, so I've cloned it into my VK6FLAB GitHub repository where it's called wsjt-time-sync. I added Peter's description to the ReadMe file, but I can take no credit for the effort, or the idea, that's all Peter. So, synchronise your clock using the signal that you're trying to decode. Seems pretty obvious now, but that was a brand new notion for me. Of course now I'm excited and wondering where else I might use this. Let me know if there's more to this that tickles your fancy. Also, just because I know Charles will poke my eye out with a Morse key if I don't mention this, you could use this script on your next POTA, Parks On The Air, or WWFF, World Wide Flora and Fauna activation, or anywhere else you go portable to make some noise. A cenografia brinca com a ilusão de ótica, tão cara aos surrealistas.O desafio surrealista a um modelo de civilização baseado apenas na racionalidade técnica e o interesse do movimento por culturas que conseguiram preservar o princípio de um mundo unificado (a cultura dos índios Turahumara, descoberta por Antonin Artaud, e a dos Hopis, estudada por André Breton) atestam sua modernidade.  Segundo Marie Sarré, co-curadora com Didier Ottinger, vice-diretor do Museu Nacional de Arte Moderna da França, “mais do que um dogma estético ou um formalismo, o surrealismo é uma filosofia que, por mais de 40 anos, reuniu homens e mulheres que acreditavam em uma relação diferente com o mundo”. O pôster da exposição apresenta uma criatura estranha, um monstro antropomórfico, com roupas largas e coloridas, faixas de tecido torcidas em todas as direções, terminando em mãos que lembram as garras de uma ave de rapina. No centro, na altura do busto, um abismo de sombras se abre. Logo acima, uma cabeça assustadora com uma mandíbula longa e desdentada. E um título que soa como uma ironia, “O Anjo do Lar”, uma obra de Max Ernst, pintada no auge da Guerra Civil Espanhola em 1937, ano em que Guernica foi bombardeada. Ela também é conhecida como “O triunfo do surrealismo” e é um lembrete de que o surrealismo sempre triunfa.Marie Serré dá mais detalhes sobre a exposição: "É essencial lembrar da preferência dos surrealistas pelas artes populares. Muito cedo eles questionaram completamente essa hierarquia entre as Belas Artes e as artes chamadas populares. Seu modelo não são as exposições de museu, são as festas regionais, o trem fantasma, o parque de diversões. "A exposição foi feita de maneira muito interessante, por temas, mas ela é muito grande. Fica difícil apreciar tudo, ela acaba saturando o olhar da gente em um determinado momento". Ela manda um recado para os visitantes que ainda não conferiram a exposição em Paris."É melhor escolher um horário com menos gente, porque é realmente difícil ter acesso às obras", avisa.Já o brasileiro Bruno Damasco gostou da experiência. "Passamos por essa exposição com artistas mais das décadas de 1930, 40 e 50, como Salvador Dali, Miró, trabalhos fortes e que são boas referências, tanto de artistas famosos como de alguns que eu não conhecia, da Alemanha e da Suécia, bem bonito, gostei. Não conhecia ainda esse espaço, tinha visitado apenas os museus mais clássicos de Paris", contou.A mostra valoriza as muitas mulheres que participaram do Movimento Surrealista, com obras de Leonora Carrington, Remedios Varo, Ithell Colquhoun, Dora Maar, Dorothea Tanning e outras, e reflete ao mesmo tempo a expansão mundial do Surrealismo, apresentando artistas internacionais como Tatsuo Ikeda (Japão), Helen Lundeberg (Estados Unidos), Wilhelm Freddie (Dinamarca) e Rufino Tamayo (México), entre outros.A exposição "Surrealimo" fica em cartaz do Centro Pompidou de Paris até o dia 13 de janeiro de 2025.

The new movie Longlegs is a psychological horror film that follows FBI Agent Lee Harker as she investigates a series of mysterious murder-suicides. The victims, all families, leave behind cryptic messages signed "Longlegs." As Harker delves deeper into the case, she uncovers a dark connection to the occult and must confront a terrifying supernatural entity. For cinematographer Andrés Arochi, technical mastery is key, but it's always in service to the story. “It has to come from something inside you that says, 'I want to create this' and then you find a technical way to do it,” he says. “For me it's always trying to be true to that instinct and to whatever feels right, and when you do it, then you're talking about yourself so it's easy to see yourself reflected.” Longlegs is Andrés' first international feature. For the past 12 years, Andrés has been working as a DP in Mexico. With no formal training, he began taking photos of friends in the music scene at age 17. Soon, he began creating projection video displays for concerts and shooting music videos and commercials. This led to work on huge music video and film sets as an on-set photographer, where he met Mexican cinematographers Guillermo Garza (the cinematographer of The Thicket), Alexis Zabé and Galo Olivares. Standing next to these skilled DPs with his camera in hand allowed Andrés to learn alongside them, and he would watch and ask questions, often copying their settings on his camera to experiment. In his spare time, Andrés would go out and practice the new techniques he learned, shooting low-budget films and music videos for friends. Fellow Mexican cinematographer Galo Olivares shot director Osgood Perkins' Gretel and Hansel, and he introduced Andrés to Perkins when the director was looking for a DP for Longlegs. Andrés was drawn to the humor in the Longlegs script, and loved that some comedy existed, even within a horror film. Unlike a lot of cinematographers and directors, Andrés and Perkins didn't create a lookbook or speak in depth about filmic references, such as Silence of the Lambs and Se7en, which were influences for Longlegs. Instead, Andrés says, “When we did talk about movies, it was more movies that had nothing to do with the genre. We talked a lot about My Own Private Idaho, Drugstore Cowboy—a lot of Gus Van Sant 1990s indie America filmmaking. Elephant was an influence on the way we used Steadicam.” One artistic reference Andrés used was The Son of Man by artist René Magritte, a painting showing a man with his face hidden by an apple. Andrés loved the idea of keeping the face of Longlegs the killer hidden at first. Andrés chose to shoot on 35mm film and in a 4:3 aspect ratio for parts of Longlegs that take place in the 1970's. “Using film changes the emotion. Everyone stays focused and shooting on film makes it necessary for everyone to rehearse. In 1924, French poet André Breton wrote a short text with fellow poet and compatriot Louis Aragon that was to send ripples through the world of art and literature, providing a blueprint for the avant-garde movements of the 20th century. One century later, we take a look at how the Surrealist Manifesto prompted an intellectual and artistic revolution in 1920s Paris; a statement of intent that was to have repercussions far beyond the French capital in the years that followed. At Paris's Pompidou Centre, curator Didier Ottinger explains how the movement was, at its inception, both political and aesthetic, taking inspiration from Karl Marx and Arthur Rimbaud; he also discusses the charismatic force field that saw Breton steward the movement for four decades.Laurent Doucet, of the Maison André Breton, expands on the role that Freudian psychoanalysis played in the development of the Surrealist Manifesto, and touches on the horrors of World War I, which prompted its authors to break with the past.Since Surrealism's reach also extended into neighbouring Belgium, we travel to the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels to hear from curator Francisca Vandepitte. Malcolm Gompf wandelt prominente Werke der Kunstgeschichte in „hoch-gepixelte“ digitale Statements um. James William Moore is not only a much-sought after and admired educator, but he is also an international lens-based artist known for his use of camp and kitsch aesthetics to create surreal and thought-provoking cinematic experiences through photography, video, projection mapping, and installations. Through his work, Moore appropriates politics, American pop culture, and everyday life creating a visual language that is both humorous and deeply meaningful. He has always been drawn to the power of visual storytelling, as seen in his series Tilting at Windmills, Get a Clue, and Portrait of a Teller's Fortune as he brings his imagination to life by combining fact and fantasy.To James, appropriation is not a dirty word. To him it is a word that has been much maligned over the years. “However, when we aren't appropriating cultures, the power of appropriation is limitless, “ said James. “ To be honest, as much as kitsch and camp form the heart of my storytelling art practice, the soul of my artwork is appropriation. Appropriation refers to taking something of someone else's and making it our own. When I look back over my work, I see a heavy influence coming from artists like Cindy Sherman, René Magritte, Philip-Lorca diCorcia, Andy Warhol, and Edward Hopper. Whether it's a subconscious passion for architecture and mundane of Hopper, the vibrant storytelling with saturated imagery of diCorcia, or the sheer gaudiness of Warhol – I see the influence of these masters on my work. Through my reverent appreciation of these artists, I appropriate their style, subject matter, visual composition, and techniques.”Moore completed his Master of Fine Art, with a concentration in photography, at San José State University. He has taught photography at SJSU and Gavilan College. He also led a workshop on Adobe Photoshop to assist with the City of San Jose's Cultural History and Postcard Public Art Project. His work has been seen in group shows, with highlights including: Clang, Clang Clang went the Trolley at Rayko Galleries' SHOWCASE (2012, San Francisco), Spin Me ‘Round at Pacific Art League's Carnevale (2010, Palo Alto), Alone with Dino at 1650 Gallery's Dudes, Bros, & Gentlemen (2016, Los Angeles), Dances at Windmills at JJ&A PopUP Gallery's Unconventional Urban Ballet (2014, Palm Springs) and selected images from Madame B's Tarot Readings appearing at FotoNostrum (2023, Barcelona). Nous sommes en novembre 1924. C'est à cette époque que commence la publication d'une série de tracts intitulée « Correspondance ». Une aventure éditoriale que l'on considère comme étant la première manifestation du surréalisme en Belgique. A l'initiative de ce projet, on retrouve Camille Goemans et Marcel Lecomte, mais surtout Paul Nougé qui, quelques années plus tôt, a participé à la fondation du Parti communiste belge. Peu de temps après, Nougé rencontre les surréalistes français, Louis Aragon, André Breton et Paul Éluard, et signe, le 21 septembre 1926, une tribune intitulée « La Révolution d'abord et toujours » qui parait dans le journal communiste « L'Humanité ». On peut y lire : " Plus encore que le patriotisme, qui est une hystérie comme une autre, mais plus creuse et plus mortelle qu'une autre, ce qui nous répugne, c'est l'idée de Patrie qui est vraiment le concept le plus bestial, le moins philosophique dans lequel on essaie de faire entrer notre esprit. Nous sommes certainement des barbares, puisque une certaine forme de civilisation nous écœure." 1926 marque l'ébauche de la constitution du groupe surréaliste de Bruxelles avec l'arrivée de Louis Scutenaire et, bien sûr, René Magritte. La collaboration entre parisiens et bruxellois sera souvent très tendue. Plus tard encore les Wallons, avec notamment Achille Chavée, développeront leur propre mouvement. Les surréalistes belges veulent transformer le monde à partir du langage et de la représentation, leur activité va se développer sur près de soixante ans, couvrant trois générations. Le mouvement, dans son ensemble, par-delà les frontières, aura marquer durablement le vingtième siècle. Pourquoi ? Les Belges ont-ils cultivé leur particularisme ? Comprenons-nous bien leur héritage lorsque l'on parle, aujourd'hui, de « surréalisme à la belge » pour décrire la moindre situation incongrue, voire stupide ? Er ist der bekannteste Surrealist und bis heute geben seine schwebenden Bilder jedem Betrachter unlösbare Rätsel auf: René Magritte. In der neuesten Folge des Podcast „Augen zu“ von ZEIT und ZEIT ONLINE gehen Florian Illies und Giovanni di Lorenzo der Frage nach, wie es Magritte gelang, die Kunst der Moderne mit der Magie des Alltäglichen zu bereichern. Seine Motive gehören zu den bekanntesten Bilderfindungen des 20. Jahrhunderts: das sich unter Decken umarmende Paar, der riesige Apfel in einem Zimmer, die Wolken, die durch ein Haus ziehen – und natürlich „Ceci ne pas une pipe“, „Das ist keine Pfeife“, geschrieben unter das Bild einer Pfeife, damit wir auf immer realisieren, dass nichts so ist, wie es scheint. Und dass ein Bild immer ein Bild bleibt und nie eine Wirklichkeit wird. 1898 in Belgien geboren fand Magritte in den Zwanzigerjahren zu seinem charakteristischen Stil einer verschobenen Realität. Er hatte es sich zur Aufgabe gemacht, herkömmliche Sehgewohnheiten nachhaltig zu irritieren – und zwar in einem altmeisterlich genauen Malstil, mit dem er scheinbar romantische Szenerien durch kleine, aber entscheidende Eingriffe logisch durcheinanderwirbelte. In der neuen Folge von „Augen zu“ diskutieren Florian Illies und Giovanni di Lorenzo leidenschaftlich darüber, ob die jahrzehntelange Variation dieses Prinzips einer nachhaltigen Wirklichkeitsverwirrung ausreicht, um ihn zu einem der größten Künstler des 20. Jahrhunderts zu zählen. Einig sind sich die beiden Gastgeber des Podcasts aber bei der Frage nach ihrem Lieblingsbild Magrittes: Es ist „Das Reich der Lichter“ ("L'Empire des Lumieres“) von 1961, eine verstörende Verschränkung einer nächtlichen Häuserzeile mit beleuchteten Fenstern mit einem taghellen Himmel darüber hat beide in ihren Bann gezogen. In diesem Frühjahr wurde das Bild, das sich seit der Entstehung im Familienbesitz befand, für 71 Millionen Euro versteigert. Es ist damit nicht nur das betörendste, sondern auch das teuerste Bild Magrittes. Am besten kennenlernen kann man das Werk Magrittes in seiner belgischen Heimatstadt Brüssel – und zwar nicht nur im Magritte-Museum, sondern auch in seinem ehemaligen Wohnhaus mit der originalen Einrichtung, wo man sieht, wie auf einer Staffelei in einem bürgerlichen Esszimmer einige der nachhaltigsten Erschütterungen der bürgerlichen Sehgewohnheiten des 20.
