In 2004, as part of the Star Wars Fan Club, both Jason and Gabe received in the mail actual animation cels from the legendary Ewoks animated series. For decades, Jason didn't know who the weird creature with a flower on its head was and had his stashed away in his Art of Attack of the Clones book. Last month he rediscovered it and found out it's from the Ewoks season 2 episode, BRINGING UP NORKY. So that can only mean one thing - Jason and Gabe have to watch Bringing Up Norky three times in a row! Listen along as they make deep observations, get confused, feel bad for the animators and compare watching it to falling asleep! So, get some cookies out of the pouch, listen today and celebrate the love! It's an exciting moment for Into A Larger World Project as Kara brings you this interview with Dan Madsen, Star Wars fandom legend. Dan was present at some huge moments in Star Wars history, whether it's the 10th anniversary convention in 1987, spending time at the helm of the Star Wars Fan Club, founding the magazine Star Wars Insider, and even on set (and on screen!!) in The Phantom Menace. Most notably (and most excitingly for Kara), Dan was the producer of the original Star Wars Celebration in 1999. Dan tells Kara all about his Star Wars history, the wild times in fandom leading up to Episode I, and of course the whole timeline of that first Celebration.Find Dan on Instagram (https://instagram.com/madsen8973?igshid=MzRlODBiNWFlZA== ) or in this awesome Facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/rememberswcelebration1?mibextid=LQQJ4d ) where tons of Celebration memories are shared!Into A Larger World fully supports SAG-AFTRA in their fight for a fair contract. It's time for Posters of the Month: Today at GeekFest Rants, Carlos will profile three new genre posters. The first Star Wars Fan Club exclusive McQuarrie poster, the Star Wars children immunization poster, and the 2001: A Space Odyssey bathroom instructions poster. Then we take a look at two of the biggest rivals of the Star Wars Kenner figure line, Mattel's Masters of the Universe and Kenner's G.I Joe. We purchased two figures to represent those lines from the newly recreated vintage style assortment.
Kristin Baver is the author of the new book Skywalker: A Family At War, a biographical account covering three generations in the first family of Star Wars, available wherever books are sold including a signed edition on sale at Green Apple Books in San Francisco. Kristin Baver is a journalist who loved science fiction before she could even write her own name. (Seriously, she was a card-carrying member of the Star Wars Fan Club when she had no other real reason to own a wallet.) Now she gets paid to pen stories and book reviews, interview fellow fans, writers, and other interesting people, and aspires to one day craft a Boushh disguise and join the ranks of the 501st Legion. You can follow Kristen on Instagram here. And of course check out more Creative Mind on our blog, Instagram, and YouTube pages.
This week we are taking a look at the long and fascinating history of the original Star Wars Fan Club and the newsletter that was the source for all Star Wars information, Bantha Tracks. From Celebration to The Star Wars Show, Bantha Tracks set the standard for what it means to be a Star Wars fan. How did it relate to the zine fandom culture of time? Who is Maureen Garett and why is she so important to Star Wars fan history? What was the story of the sequel trilogy in 1980? And just WHO is Professor Tumbleseed? Listen today and celebrate the love! "The Get-Together" is a podcast about the nuts and bolts of community building. Hosts Bailey Richardson and Kevin Huynh of People & Company ask organizers who have built exceptional communities about just how they did it. How did they get the first people to show up? How did they grow to thousands more members? In this episode we interview Dan Madsen, the secret sauce behind the Star Wars Fan Club and the first Star Wars Celebrations. After a fan zine he created as a Denver teenager was noticed by George Lucas himself, Lucasfilm asked Dan to help them. He was tasked with “[keeping] Star Wars in front of people. I had to keep it alive and vibrant, keep the excitement up,” Dan told us, and man did he nail it. Dan took over the Star Wars Insider magazine, growing it to 500,000 subscribers at its peak). Eventually he also took the reins of the official Star Wars Fan Club (growing it to 180,000 members), ran a $20 million collectibles business and hosted the very first Star Wars Celebration, bringing tens of thousands of Star Wars fans from around the world together for the first time. In our interview, we ask Dan about his lifelong devotion to Star Wars and its fans. We’ll dig into how Dan made that first Celebration a success, and also about how he grew his relationship with Lucasfilm from that first zine to a global fan enterprise.
If you take away one thing from this podcast, we hope it’s this: don’t fixate on what to ask from people; instead, focus on what you can do with them. "Get Together" is a podcast about the nuts and bolts of community building. Hosts Bailey Richardson and Kevin Huynh will ask everyday people who have built exceptional communities about just how they did it. How did they get the first people to show up? How did they grow to thousands more members? You’ll hear us interview a diverse set of organizers, everyone from the head of the Star Wars Fan Club to Lola Omolola, whose Female IN private Facebook group now has more than 1.7m members. But first, we’ll introduce the people behind the podcast. Bailey, Kevin and Kai are the partners behind People & Company. Together they help organizations build communities—real ones filled with humans who genuinely care and keep showing up. In this pilot episode, you'll learn more about their past work (Instagram, CreativeMornings, eBay) and what makes them tic.
Join Team Mousetalgia as we take a look back at the release of star wars in 1977 with Lucasfilm's director of fan relations at the time, Craig Miller. Miller takes us for a look inside the inner workings of Lucasfilm as Star Wars was released, which caught everyone by surprise with its overwhelming success. Miller talks about starting the official Star Wars Fan Club, George Lucas's early plans for a 12-part saga, and operating Artoo's head for various Lucasfilm productions. Then, voice actor Stephen Stanton (Star Wars Clone Wars, Star Wars Rebels) discusses his time in that galaxy far, far away portraying dozens of characters for the Star Wars universe, including both Ben Kenobi and General Tarkin. Stanton discusses the arc of his character Tarkin and his conjecture about Tarkin's unknown history, talks about visiting Disney parks with first-time guests, and discusses some of his other Disney voices in films and attractions, such as Lord Henry Mystic from Hong Kong Disneyland's Mystic Manor and Alfred the Vulture in Club 33. Plus, we discuss the future of Innoventions at Disneyland - and more. Also - don't forget to tune in to www.mousetalgialive.com this Friday at 6:00 pm to hear our live show direct from the Star Wars Celebration convention in Anaheim!
