We begin this episode with the news that someone has stolen Maurizio Cattelan’s Golden Toilet from Blenheim Palace. No, seriously. Somebody stole a golden toilet. Among the other news, Angela Carter’s house finally gets a blue plaque to celebrate her life and work, a gynaecologist has been banned from Twitter for advertising her new book, a petition with 30,000 signatures wants words that discriminate and patronise against women to be removed from the Oxford English Dictionary, Facebook have applied to trademark the work “book” (after apparently successfully trademarking the word “face”), and America goes through another Banned Books week. Our featured book is Spider-Man: Forever Young by Stefan Petrucha. If you've enjoyed this podcast then please share us with your friends or leave us a rating on your podcast app of choice. In the latest edition of Duane’s Pick of the Week Podcast, our Director of Production features the stand alone horror title for ages 13 and up, RIPPER! You thought you knew him. You were dead wrong. Carver Young dreams of becoming a detective, despite growing up in an orphanage with only crime novels to encourage him. But when he is adopted by Detective Hawking of the world famous Pinkerton Agency, Carver is given not only the chance to find his biological father, he finds himself smack in the middle of a real life investigation: tracking down a vicious serial killer who has thrown New York City into utter panic. When the case begins to unfold, however, it's worse than he could have ever imagined, and his loyalty to Mr. Hawking and the Pinkertons comes into question. As the body count rises and the investigation becomes dire, Carver must decide where his true loyalty lies. Full of whip-smart dialogue, kid-friendly gadgets, and featuring a then New York City Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt, Ripper challenges everything you thought you knew about the world's most famous serial killer. https://www.graphicaudio.net/ripper.html
Marvel fans should be sure to check out Duane’s Pick of the Week, Spider-Man: Forever Young! Created from Marvel’s prose novel by veteran comic writer Stefan Petrucha, this one is based on classic story arc from late 60’s entitled the "Stone Tablet Saga." In Forever Young, we see Spidey’s bad luck reach all-time highs, as he is caught up in a battle royal between the Kingpin and the Maggia crime outfit, who are vying for possession of a mysterious tablet. Things get even worse for his alter ego, Peter Parker, who finds himself at odds with his close friends, including the love of his life, Gwen Stacy. As a huge Spider-Man fan, who is quite familiar with the ‘60s storyline, Duane was thrilled to hear this one in the GraphicAudio format. He says, "Director Scott McCormick and Sound Designer Justin Wortz do their magic once again to deliver a very entertaining production...By all means, you need to cop a copy of Spider-Man: Forever Young!"
