Have you read Truly Devious by Maureen Johnson—or maybe even the whole series? In this May 2025 Book Club episode, we're diving into the twisty world of Ellingham Academy with Stevie Bell and company. But first, we kick things off with a Bookish Check-In. Ashley's reading Somewhere Beyond the Sea by TJ Klune (yes, the sequel to The House in the Cerulean Sea), and Jen shares her thoughts on Nnedi Okorafor's Death of the Author. Then we dive into all things Truly Devious—what makes Stevie such a compelling protagonist, how Johnson balances multiple mysteries across timelines, and why this one's a must-read for fans of dark academia and character-driven whodunits. We wrap up with perfect book pairings, plus a few favorite things outside the reading life. Let us know what you thought about this one! MAUREEN JOHNSON'S first stand-alone mystery in many years, DEATH AT MORNING HOUSE, features Marlowe Wexler, a queer teen who unlike Stevie, is no detective. Heartbroken after a disastrous date, she finds herself in a summer job working at a grand but dilapidated house in the Thousand Islands region of northern New York at the Canadian border. It's there she stumbles upon two mysteries—one in the present day and one kept concealed since the 1930s. The novel begins with a fire, though it wasn't Marlowe's fault. But she's sure that Akilah, the girl Marlowe has been in love with for years, will never go out with her again. No one dates an accidental arsonist. With her house-sitting career up in flames, Marlowe ends up as a tour guide at Morning House, a mansion built by Dr. Phillip Ralston, where he once lived with his wife, six adopted children, and young son. Marlowe uncovers a series of clues that lead her to the dreadful realization that the grounds of Morning House are hiding a horrific secret.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Dates should be hot, but not hot enough to warrant literal firefighters. Akilah, the girl Marlowe has been in love with for years, will never go out with her again. No one dates an accidental arsonist. With her house-sitting career up in flames, it seems the universe owes Marlowe a new summer job, and that's how she ends up at Morning House, a mansion built on an island in the 1920s and abandoned shortly thereafter. Sydney Freihofer is an actress who has been cast in several different popular musical theatre productions. One of her first big shows a was a production of Heathers: The Musical. When she auditioned for the show, she had her heart set on one role that really stood out to her, but then feel in love with a different role that she ended up playing in the show. Luckily, her she was also able to understudy that first track she had her eyes on. Freihofer did a production of Sister Act: The Musical, and got to play Sister Mary Robert. She found it to be very rewarding to bring a movie to the stage. Additionally, Freihofer got the chance to be in Spring Awakening. Here, she really took the opportunity to re introduce the show to a new generation of audience members who may not have really known what the show was all about. Recently, Freihofer took on the role of Maureen Johnson in a regional production of Rent. Join me in my final 2022 and first season episode with Maureen Johnson!  Her latest, Nine Liars, part of the Stevie Bell series is out now.  With Agatha Christie vibes, this series is a modern twist to the throwback whodunits.  I loved our chat as we talk all things British, mysteries, writing and more.  I was thrilled she was the grand finale of the year! It's that time of year! That time when things get busy and reading gets dropped! How can we keep reading during this intense season? In this episode, we discuss a concept we're calling Hustle Bustle Books (#hustlebustlebooks), or books that can be carried with you and read in small chunks. We don't always agree on what makes a good Hustle Bustle Book, but we've got lots of laughs and suggestions for you!
