Before he was a two-time World Series champion and four-time All-Star, Pepper Martin was jumping freight trains to spring training to save a dime. After he retired, he was choking out an umpire in Havana. In between: smoke bombs disguised as a fire emergency, a painting crew that wasn't hired to paint, a hospital room cowboy band concert nobody asked for, a stint running an Oklahoma City hockey team, and a batting line across two World Series that's still a Major League record today. Jeff traces the full career of Johnny Leonard Roosevelt "Pepper" Martin — the Wild Horse of the Osage — from a cotton farm in Temple, Oklahoma to a fistfight in Cuba, with stops at Comiskey Park, the Bellevue-Stratford Hotel (twice), and Branch Rickey's office.   Also in this episode: Jeff and Mark remember Blue Jays closer Duane Ward, who passed away at 62 during a reunion for Toronto's back-to-back championship teams. A position player picks up a two-RBI single off a catcher making his first career pitching appearance. Mets utility man Jose Iglesias/Canelita heads to Broadway for the Buena Vista Social Club musical. Jason Lloyd of The Athletic joins Lima and Lance to explain why the Cavs have no realistic offseason moves left, calling Jonathan Kuminga their best remaining option while cautioning it's the end of July with nothing great on the market. He argues Evan Mobley now faces unfair pressure as the "you could've had Jalen Brown or LeBron instead" comparisons pile up, and that Jaylon Tyson needs a full training camp to find his fit alongside Harden, Mitchell, and Mobley. Lloyd shoots down the idea that keeping Darius Garland would've changed LeBron's decision, calling that framing unfair to the Cavs, and says he doesn't buy any cap-circumvention conspiracy around LeBron's Topps deal. He closes by ripping the Browns' quarterback situation as exhausting "nonsense," saying he has zero interest in watching Deshaun Watson play again and expects Cleveland to draft a quarterback in 2027.

Welcome back to Cards on the Table, coming to you straight from the Arena Club Studio inside Cards HQ!Today, we are unpacking the absolute madness of Fanatics Fest. With a staggering 200,000 attendees this year (up from 70,000 in year one!), an $80-$90 million production budget, and nonstop mainstream media coverage from ESPN to ABC World News Tonight, Fanatics Fest just changed the hobby forever. But with The National kicking off in just a few days, we debate whether Fanatics stole all the hype or if the expanded National show floor and sold-out VIP tickets prove there is room for both mega-events. Plus, the highly anticipated 2026 Topps Chrome Baseball has finally dropped, and the new Back-to-Back MVP Gold Logoman dual relics are breaking the internet. Will the Shohei Ohtani dual-patch, dual-auto (featuring both English and Kanji signatures) break the $3 million record set last year? We break down why Topps is currently making the best insert designs in a decade. Finally, the 2026 World Cup has officially come to a close. We analyze the market fallout: Why is Lamine Yamal's market dipping despite winning the Cup? How did Erling Haaland become the biggest hobby winner of the tournament? Dan Jamieson secured exclusive rights for Jude Bellingham the week before the FIFA World Cup. The ICONS CEO takes us inside the complex world sporting memorabilia, where fame, fans and intellectual property collide. The Bellingham bet — talent-spotting as a business modelIcons approached Bellingham three years, eight months ago while he was still at Dortmund — long before the World Cup made him a global name. The signing model is a venture bet: identify the X-factor early, earn the entourage's trust, lock in exclusivity before the price moves.Jamieson's read on Bellingham is the whole thesis in miniature: "treat him like he's a foreign footballer." His fame was built overseas, his value is that he transcends Englishness — the opposite of "yeoman-like" Harry Kane, who doesn't sell to kids in Macau, Australia or the Philippines. The signing itself is prosaic: roughly an hour of his time at Real Madrid's training complex, filmed for content. The value is manufactured afterwards through framing, licensing and authentication. The rights stack — why one player requires three dealsA single Bellingham product sits on top of a layered set of rights: the player (exclusive deal via a tight, family-run team), the club (Real Madrid takes a cut on image rights — their argument: the halo of the shirt inflates his global value), and the tournament (FIFA / Champions League licences).Notable: Icons pays Real Madrid as well as Bellingham, but does not pay the FA for the England shirt. The signing was split ~50/50 Madrid/England on the bet that Madrid would globalise better — but post-tournament it's England fans doing the buying. A live demonstration of how a World Cup rewrites demand in real time."Official, authentic, exclusive" — the three buzzwordsThe entire proposition rests on these three words. The FIFA licence buys the right to use the marks, access official channels, and — revealingly — instruct Google to stop directing buyers to unofficial sellers.Sharp detail on enforcement: the party responding most effectively to takedown requests is the Chinese, who ask for official IP letters so they can clear out counterfeit listings. Western platforms, by implication, are slower.Triple Lock — authentication as the core moatIcons' answer to a "Wild West" market: film the entire signing, edit it, attach an NFC chip to the shirt so a phone scan surfaces the exact geolocated, timestamped, verifiable moment of signing. The honest tension underneath: Richard presses whether authenticity actually matters to a buyer who just wants Bellingham on the wall. Jamieson concedes there's "a world of slop out there" far cheaper than Icons — the business model only works if enough buyers pay a premium for provenance. Authenticity isn't a feature, it's the entire value exchange.Retailtainment — the media/retail convergenceRichard's coinage-to-steal of the episode: "retailtainment." Icons has turned itself into live commerce for the eBay "Summer of Soccer" — footballers interviewed for an hour in-studio while an Icons "World XI" is auctioned live. Effectively "QVC for the modern age."With three months' notice, Icons stood up a studio, trained staff into on-camera talent, and now broadcasts every three days. But Jamieson is disciplined about scale: live is ~10% of World Cup activity — a high-profile experiment, not the engine. The Gary Lineker / Rest Is Football anecdote is the episode's best illustration of guerrilla marketing: a Messi shirt hand-delivered to reception, an invite upstairs, then a Bellingham frame — which ends up on-screen in the show's England opener. Product placement earned, not bought.Fanatics — the elephant, as platform and as frenemyIcons' relationship with Fanatics is deliberately pragmatic: it's a distribution partner (15 years with the memorabilia team) and a subcontracting client (Icons signs players for Topps and Panini, but doesn't produce cards itself).Jamieson's framing of Fanatics' ambition is the sharpest strategic line in the conversation: they want to "build a multi-story car park of tents" — own "all the goodies in the sweet shop." Fanatics Live is "Comic-Con for sport,"and the model is league rights plus individually-contracted superstars who also do PR, events and the "white party in the Hamptons."The Topps/FIFA card rights deal gets a diplomatic "let's say it was a surprise" — Jamieson can't see how you award a licence five years out (it reverts to Fanatics/Topps at the 2031 Saudi World Cup). Read: a big cheque, future-proofing, and Infantino goodwill from the on-site deal. The trading-card vs. memorabilia distinction — two different marketsCrucial clarification of where Icons sits. Trading cards are a "free-flowing frictionless" tradable commodity — American-centric, increasingly international (Ohtani, Pokémon, Japan), an asset class with whales and secondary markets.Icons' product is deliberately not tradable. Jamieson refuses to call it an investment: "you are a fan, you love this guy... put it on your wall and enjoy it." He's wary of the unrefereed secondary market. He acknowledges Icons is "thinking about" making its product tradable — a live strategic question they haven't resolved.NFTs — the dog that didn't barkJamieson stood on the sidelines through the NFT boom by instinct — a "real world tangible product person."Tellingly, no one ever came with a big cheque, so Icons was never tested. His one genuinely interesting idea: the Maradona shirt with a cigar burn — a true one-of-one that could pair a physical artefact with a blockchain-owned digital twin. But the digital-native builders "were obsessed by the digital nature of it" and never bothered with the physical/digital combination that would have interested him.On digital signatures: blunt dismissal — "I hate that stuff. It's just rubbish." Worth maybe £2 on a merchandising cup, meaningless to a collector. The supply-chain reality — where the money actually gets made and stuckThe least glamorous, most revealing theme. Icons believes it's the biggest buyer of football shirts in the world — thousands at a time, "round the back of the bike sheds" at Classic Football Shirts. The Messi 2022 lesson: three years' revenue in three days, but entirely on pre-orders, because there were no Argentina shirts left on Earth. Adidas took six months to remanufacture; customers waited until summer. Right now Jamieson is "buying Argentina shirts" pre-emptively to avoid a repeat. England shirts are easier — the market is so vast Adidas "produce billions"The through-line question — what is a media outlet now?The thread Richard keeps pulling: retail, media, rights and IP are collapsing into one space. eBay Live, Fanatics Live, Netflix moving from Rest Is Football into live FIFA rights (the Women's World Cup in Brazil on Netflix), and Icons building its own broadcast studio — all point the same way.The strategic uncertainty left open: is the American World Cup an outlier or the new template? Jamieson is inside it and still can't fully call it — which is the honest and interesting place to leave it.Unofficial Partner is the leading podcast for the business of sport. Dr. Beckett and this week's Hobby Hotline crew (Adam Palmer and Tony TJ is Online) discuss news that Michael Jordan has extended his exclusive legacy partnership with Upper Deck, including Goodwin Champions redemptions for signed 1986 Fleer basketball wax packs and an eBay-auctioned 1-of-1 signed 1986 Fleer box with 10% of proceeds going to the Boys and Girls Clubs Foundation. They debate opening versus keeping the packs sealed, note old pack “searchability,” and compare the concept to Topps' Mickey Mantle nostalgia redemption. They also cover Topps/Fanatics testing pre-ordered Topps Chrome Update mega boxes sold without shrink wrap, focusing on tamper concerns, scams, pricing, and whether it helps collectors buy at retail. The episode closes with thoughts on the collector tension between buying singles and unopened product and why boxes must be opened for singles to exist.   01:07 Jordan and Upper Deck Deal 01:18 Signed Fleer Pack Redemptions 03:07 Open or Keep Sealed 04:27 Nostalgia Redemption Trend 05:33 Why Partner Matters 08:24 Jordan Market Heat 09:44 Topps No Shrink Wrap Test 11:41 Tampering and Trust Issues 12:50 Pricing and Scalper Impact 15:25 Singles Versus Sealed Debate

Tim Kurkjian is a baseball expert, so naturally he built a team made up entirely of players who have one thing in common: the number 250 played a significant role in their careers. Trust us, it's a fun and fitting way for baseball fans to celebrate America's 250th anniversary. The Rangers and Marlins are both on a roll, while Dave Roberts reaches a managerial milestone faster than anyone in history. Plus, the Brewers honor one of their own with a stunning new mural—and it's well deserved. In this week's Quirkjians, we've got strikeouts, struggling Yankees, and Max Muncy times two. Plus, who's refusing to swing at the first pitch? Steven Kwan, and you can take that to the bank. Jeff opens a box of 2001 Topps cards that honestly may have never been opened before (so much for preserving their value). Then it's time for the Alphabest, where the last names beginning with "O" spark plenty of debate thanks to Shohei Ohtani's two-way greatness. Tom Clark's Comic Book World

Episode 297 of Tom Clark's 6M Podcast is a look at Mars Attacks!. Tom Clark and Phil Lindsey break down Tim Burton's 1996 sci-fi black comedy, based on the infamous Topps trading card series. They examine the film's massive ensemble cast, its satirical take on alien invasion movies, and how Burton blended 1950s B-movie influences with dark humor, over-the-top destruction, and one of the most unconventional blockbuster casts of the decade. They also discuss the film's troubled development, the decision to replace stop-motion effects with CGI, Danny Elfman's score, and the movie's evolution from box office disappointment to cult classic. Dr. Beckett welcomes Graig Miller (Mid-Life Sports Cards) and his father Michael. They discuss Graig's new book, Midlife Card Çollecting Stories, and the growth of his YouTube channel and podcast into a network. Michael describes Graig as naturally shy and reflects on how they both approach teaching and coaching, emphasizing meaningful communication over performance. They compare collecting styles: Michael's narrow focus on rebuilding and grading his childhood 1959–1960 Topps sets and gradually moving earlier, versus Greg's eclectic interests including 100+ year-old cards and vintage golf cards. Michael explains returning to the hobby through taking his kids to 1980s card shows and later reconnecting with Graig after losing his wife. They highlight the special value of a reclaimed childhood card with Michael's name, the actual card from his childhood, and discuss collecting driven by passion, personal goals, and community rather than competition or card value.   00:43 Graig's Hobby Journey 02:51 Teaching and Coaching Style 05:54 Collecting Focus Differences 10:08 Reclaiming a Childhood Card 12:07 Hobby as Side Gig 15:40 Golf and Healthy Competition

And now for something completely different. This month, we're proud to present a special show focussing on assistance for newcomers to the hobby, but hopefully, we have helpful nuggets of advice for all listeners. We'll look at what you can collect, where to find it, pro's and con's of the various marketplaces, how to spot repro (and why), options for display, and a lot more besides. Special guest interviewee this month is Wayne Richards, a collector who had the toys in the 70s and 80s, but as an adult collector, he's only been back in the game for about a year. He tells Andy P about his collecting journey, his growing collection, and a few lessons learned along the way.    Elsewhere, the lads chat about how they got back into collecting themselves, discuss their latest pick-ups, and Face-Off in Argentina, New Zealand, Japan and France.  Rich hosts this months quiz, impartial as ever, and the lads look at the latest and greatest finds from the collecting world - a Harbert Yoda, a Mexican record, Brazilian Model Trems, Star Wars Vans, and a radio press kit. In Rebel Briefings we celebrate in Cincinnati, wonder Y wings, get retro with Jeroen, discuss dodgy die-cast, ask whether Rebel Transports are poo, hear about Heritage hi-jinks, celebrate Celebration, and look at Topps prices paid. No Licensee this month as we just couldn't fit it into such a packed show!  Find the podcast in all the usual places.

On May 17, 1998, David Wells showed up to Yankee Stadium having slept maybe two and a half hours, running on coffee, a single pancake, and whatever was left of Saturday night. He then threw the 15th perfect game in Major League Baseball history in front of 49,820 people who were mostly there for a Beanie Baby. That's the story this week. We go deep on the whole thing — the legendary SNL after-party that didn't happen, the cast members who swear they were there and provably weren't, the Mandela Effect that turned one hungover pitcher into baseball mythology, and what Wells actually did in the nine years after the game nobody thought he had left in him. Also in this episode: Rickey Henderson and Jim Rice stop by Letterman to deliver a top 10 list, Steve Garvey turns up as an extra in The Godfather Part II, Wade Boggs earns his nickname on the set of Cheers, and we finally finish that pack of 2003 Topps with Alfonso Soriano, Shawn Green, Al Leiter, and Sean Casey. Topics include: David Wells perfect game, 1998 New York Yankees, SNL Mandela Effect, Jimmy Fallon David Wells party, Beanie Baby day Yankee Stadium, Chuck Knoblauch throwing yips, Tim McClelland umpire, Don Larsen perfect game, Dock Ellis no-hitter, Dallas Braden perfect game, David Cone knuckleball, Rickey Henderson Hall of Fame, Wade Boggs Cheers, Steve Garvey Godfather, 2003 Topps baseball cards, baseball history podcast, Two Strike Noise 00:00 Open 01:06 Rickey & Rice on Letterman 05:26 Garvey in Godfather 07:18 Boggs on Cheers 10:10 Towel Toss Ejection 12:40 Wells Perfect Game Intro 15:48 Gout and Yankees Context 19:10 The Mystery Party Night 23:28 Hangover to Perfection 30:37 Perfect Game Tension 33:00 Knoblauch Saves It 34:23 Twins Stall Tactics 35:26 Ninth Inning Drama 37:31 Perfect Game Celebration 38:51 Aftermath And Trivia 45:06 SNL Mandela Effect 47:33 Wax Pack Heroes Returns 01:00:50 Final Cards Winner 01:04:11 Wrap Up And Plugs   Connect With Us YouTube: www.youtube.com/@twostrikenoise Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/twostrikenoise BlueSky: @twostrikenoise.bsky.social Email: twostrikenoise@gmail.com   Support a Great Cause: Don't let your common cards collect dust!
