Alot of voting going on this week. Hall of Fame, Veteran's Committee and Japan's GQ Man of the Year. We discovered a really cool new map tool from SABR, we root for John Smoltz and put a date on the calendar for a great new event MLB is holding in Cooperstown next year. Our main story this week is about Hall of Famer Big Ed Walsh. Big Ed literally pitched until his arm fell off. But before it did he was one of the best pitchers in the league. His spitball was as prolific as his innings pitched totals. And finally Wax Pack Heroes is back as we wind down the season. Some 2003 Topps give us some good names and great stories. And don't forget to fill out the 2SN HOF ballot. Your vote could be the difference between Brandon Phillips getting into the HOF or not! Don't forget, you can leave us a message at 607-216-8811. "Legends of the Hobby" Sy Berger Mr.Berger is one of the few icons of the hobby who can get credit for Hobby past and also what we see today. Brad Balukjian is a life-long Phillies fan and the author of the LA Times Best Seller The Wax Pack. The premise behind the book is simple. Brad took a pack of Topps baseball cards from 1986 (the first year he remembered collecting cards as a kid), and set out on an epic adventure to find and talk to all of the players included in the pack. As Brad attempts to get to know the actual people behind the ballplayers the book dives deep into a difficult-to-answer question: is there life after baseball? Brad and Anna discuss how he came up with the idea for The Wax Pack, some of his favorite memories from his more than 11,000 mile cross-country road trip, and about his upcoming book The Six Pack. Ryan doesn't take many L's on Card Talk... so today is about to be a bit different. It's been 3 weeks since we last recorded an episode. Since then, the Jets are in the midst of a complete free fall, Penn State lost to Michigan, and the Patriots have become a laughingstock.. but the 3rd Ohio State loss in a row to Michigan, in a game that Ryan claims is the "most important game of the year... even more so than a possible National Championship game... the one game he wants to win above all else!"You hate to see these things. I hate to see these things. But Lou... he LOVES to see it and you can be sure he was ready for this week's "What's on your mind" segment. In hobby news, Topps Chrome Update Debut Patches are absolutely on fire, highlighting a very good run of recent promotions for Topps that included Wemby's Bowman U Green "1st card I ever signed" inscription, the TacoFractors, a Babe Ruth / Ohtani dual auto card and the MVP Buyback program that sent collectors to their LCS for a little discounted holiday shopping!Speaking of Wemby, his 1st ever game worn jersey (from the second half - he wore 2 that night) sold at auction for an eye popping $762,000, the most money ever paid for a rookie jersey. Should Panini or Fanatics have bought it and cut it up, creating the ultimate chase? In other NBA news, LeBron's longevity is other worldly... the Orlando Magic are HOT... and Anthony Edwards is very cool. Tune in for all of that, some Instagram Q&A and Play of the Week is back with SIX slides, including one follower that made a play on a Hall of Fame wide receiver!Time Stamps: :54 - What's on your mind? EPISODE 169 - Clark and John first open the show talking about the news that some Costco stores are now selling Topps baseball cards again. Is this good for the hobby or are we now entering another junk wax era? They also discuss Tim Duncan's new exclusive multi-year deal to sign basketball cards with Panini America and what it could mean for the value of his new autograph cards. Moving on to Hobby Headlines, Clark and John discuss the upcoming Sports Card Expo (the largest card show in Canada) in early November and what their strategy is going to the show this year. They also share what they might expect at the expo in light of the current sports card market. Next, they play a hockey-themed round of Overrated/Underrated focusing on hockey cards such as the 1979 Topps rookie card of Wayne Gretzky, Connor Bedard 1st Draft Pick card in Upper Deck Series 1 and Patrick Roy rookie cards. Lastly, they play their regular "Pick 1" segment where they are given two players or cards and subsequently debate which one they would rather invest in. Clark uses a submission from a loyal listener (Josh @inspiredsportscards) as his Pick 1 while John puts up a 1st Bowman non-autograph card vs. a non-Bowman 1st autograph card of the same player with the same value. -------------------------- CONNECT WITH US!
