Paulette Myers-Rich has partnered with dozens of artists and writers during an accomplished career in fine art printing. In this interview we talk about many of those collaborations - including a series of books featuring Irish poets produced jointly with the Center for Irish Studies at the University of St. Thomas.  Paulette moved to Beacon in her fifties, choosing it in part because it visually echoed her industrial river city home of St. Paul, Minnesota. Once here, she continued to produce letterpress printed works under her imprint, Traffic Street Press, and opened the No. 3 Reading Room exhibition space. In our interview, Paulette talks about her creative partnerships with artists and writers, the setbacks of Covid, and the importance of fine art books today.

Welcome to Art is Awesome, the show where we talk with an artist or art worker with a connection to the San Francisco Bay Area. This week, Emily features photographer Chloe Sherman, who shares her journey from Portland to San Francisco and her role in capturing the queer community of the 90s. Chloe's work, which portrays a time when the city's rents were affordable and its social spots thriving, has been exhibited internationally and highlighted in a well-received book. The episode also details how Chloe's daughter's social media efforts during the pandemic brought greater visibility to her art. The conversation delves into Chloe's inspirations, daily routines, and creative influences, with a mention of her show 'Renegades' at the Leica store in San Francisco. About Artist Chloe Sherman:Chloe Sherman (b. 1969, New York) is a San Francisco-based fine art photographer known for her vibrant portraits of queer life in San Francisco during the 1990s. As a vehement visual chronicler, Sherman captures an intimacy and vibrancy that brings a unique subculture to life, even decades later. Sherman received her degree in fine art photography from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1999, during which time she began documenting a generation of young self-identified Queers. The community became family, and she reveled in their collective creativity, support, pride, and their strident defiance of cultural norms. This was the catalyst for an entire body of work that would go on to be recognized and shown internationally. Sherman's photographs, all shot on 35mm film, offer a window into an era of defiance, freedom, resilience, and tenderness, shedding light on the energy of San Francisco at a time when it was brimming with possibility. Her images are a throughline, anchoring viewers to a moment in Queer history and immortalizing moments of gender experimentation and joy.Her work has been exhibited internationally, including at F³ Freiraum für Fotografie (Berlin), Schlomer Haus Gallery (San Francisco), Kunsthalle Nürnberg (Nuremberg), Leica San Francisco, and The Diego Rivera Gallery (San Francisco). She has been published extensively in Nothing But the Girl (ed. Susie Bright and Jill Posner; 1996), RESEARCH: Angry Women in Rock (Juno Books; 1996), Out In America (Viking Press; 1994), Rolling Stone Magazine, Interview Magazine, Deneuve, the Advocate, and the New Yorker. Sherman's work is a part of the permanent collections at The National Gallery of Art, SF MOMA, and those of private collectors. In 2023, Hatje Cantz Verlag published a monograph of her work, Renegades: San Francisco – 1990s. Visit  Chloe's Website:  ChloeShermanStudio.comFollow Chloe on Instagram:  @ChloeDShermanLearn more about her Renegades exhibit at Leica Store San Francisco, CLICK HERE. --About Podcast Host Emily Wilson:Emily a writer in San Francisco, with work in outlets including Hyperallergic, Artforum, 48 Hills, the Daily Beast, California Magazine, Latino USA, and Women's Media Center. What if chasing your dreams and confronting your fears are two sides of the same coin? Join us on a journey through the intricate dance of art and fear. We unveil the tightrope artists walk between ambition and dread, sharing personal stories and insights on how external expectations and internal critics can often hijack our creative instincts. With a nod to Agnes Martin's studio rituals and Andrew Wyeth's secretive Helga series, we discuss how action and routine can triumph over fear, creating a safe space for authentic artistic expression. The creative process is often a battlefield between personal vision and external validation. We explore this tension and offer a roadmap for minimizing distractions in our tech-driven world. By examining Helen Frankenthaler's patience-first approach to art and the pitfalls of chasing trends, we illuminate the importance of following one's heart amidst the noise. Whether through the lens of cinema's slow storytelling or the raw truth in self-directed growth, the conversation highlights the significance of focusing on the art itself rather than fleeting social media approval. As we navigate the emotional highs and lows of the artistic journey, we celebrate the vital role of community and collaboration. Drawing inspiration from historical art movements and the camaraderie among fellow creators, we emphasize the power of artist friendships. Listen as we share how genuine relationships can inspire creativity and foster healthy competition. Our discussion also touches on the strategic use of social media, encouraging artists to journal their progression with intention, and reminding us that the joy of creation and problem-solving lies at the heart of every artist's path.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg

This week on our Arts to Hearts podcast, we have three guests who are featured in our book ‘101 Art Book: Floral Edition'. Our host Charuka Arora sits down with Dawn Bouchard, KC Christmas, and Christina Cowan to talk about their creative process, the hardest things they have faced as artists, and their experience of getting published in 101 Art Book. Dawn Bouchard decided to follow her passion after her retirement as a school principal, and now this is what she wants to do all the time. For the past 5 years, she has been painting and experimenting with acrylic paints and soft pastels. KC Christmas is based in South Carolina, and even though is a part-time middle school teacher, her first love is creating things and painting which involves acrylic paint and paper collages. Christina Cowan is from Connecticut, and while she is a social worker, she has been transitioning to a full-time artist. Her work involves oil where she also incorporates collages, poetry, and quotes in order to tell a story. For all three of our guests, the hardest part about being an artist is finding their style and managing the business side of it. This is something that rings true for many others, especially emerging artists, as the initial creative journey is all about finding your voice and how you can make the most out of your work. The creative journey is not all about the challenges, but also the rewards where the entire experience of creating something can be satisfying. It is all about taking inspiration from different elements and then using your art to bring those ideas to life, and for KC, Christina, and Dawn, that is what it's all about! Our book ‘101 Art Book: Floral Edition' has a stunning floral cover by Sonal Nathwani which also makes it a perfect addition to your coffee table. You can find inspiration in floral works by 101 artists and get mesmerized by their reimagination of something so simple yet so alluring; a flower. Have you ever felt like every time you go to do something REALLY important, all hell starts to break loose, like the entire universe starts to conspire against you? We've all been there and in fact, Neil and I were just there last week as we prepared to speak to a youth group about the power of addiction recovery through the 12-steps and the atonement of Jesus Christ. I've also been studying a book called The War of Art, which is all about his topic. So today's podcast breaks down the why of what this is, and the what in what to do about it. Remember this the next time you feel discouraged to the point of wanting to quit, that that IS the point of the resistance, but you're stronger and now you're smarter too, and you can overcome it. Send this to a friend who might need this same encouragement and if this episode speaks to you, we'd be so grateful if you left a review or shared it on social media (tag me @corrinestokoe so I can repost it). Have you ever stood before a work of art, lost in its abstract forms, and felt a story unfolding within you? This episode takes you on a journey into the world of Cy Twombly, where art speaks in hushed tones of history, mythology, and a quest for essence. As we navigate through the intimate chambers of Twombly's mind, we begin to unravel the tapestry of ideas and emotions that his work provokes, from the echoes of his American roots to the whispers of ancient Rome that permeated his life after 1957.Join us as we share candid moments of personal discovery, where my appreciation for the textured and the imperfect collides with Twombly's layered canvases. The discussion traverses the artist's reluctance to offer context, leaving us to wander in the lush mystery of his expression, and challenges us to embrace the silent stories his pieces tell. With each brushstroke and scribble, Twombly invites us into a dialogue, a conversation that thrives in the spaces he claims through his art, leaving a resonance that lingers long after the gallery lights dim.As we wrap up, we reflect on the profound connections we forge with art, be it through cherished heirlooms or the fleeting moments we share with it in a museum. Discovering art becomes akin to a treasure hunt, where the thrill lies in both the anticipation and the unexpected joys. Whether you're whispering to a Twombly or nodding silently to a Joan Mitchell, this episode is an ode to the conversations we hold with art, the questions we ask, and the answers we find within ourselves. So come along, bring your voice to our exchange, and let's explore the narrative that awaits in the next gallery.Send us a message - we would love to hear from you!Make sure to follow us on Instagram here:@justmakeartpodcast @tynathanclark @nathanterborg
