In An Extraordinary Union, published in 2017, is the first in Cole's The Loyal League series, both main characters are attempting to shape the politics of their time through espionage. Elle Burns is a freedwoman who has been living in New England with her parents after their enslaver died and his son freed them. She has an eidetic memory that has been treated somewhat as a party trick for most of her life, including by well-meaning, but thoughtless white abolitionists in the North. Elle joins the Loyal League, a network of spies aiming to aid the Union in the Civil War, to try and use her gift to help the cause. While Elle is working she meets Malcolm McCall, who has been sent by the Pinkertons to collaborate with Elle. He is also undercover—though he lives as a Rebel soldier, using his easy charm and good looks to ingratiate himself into Southern society. Cole takes a setting that has a history in romance, but one that ignores the people most subjugated by it and gives us a story that is part espionage thriller, part slow burn enemies to lovers. Allan Pinkerton started the Pinkerton National Detective Agency to catch robbers, counterfeiters and spies. For a time, Pinkerton detectives enjoyed their good image, carefully crafted by Pinkerton himself. But, that image tarnished as the Pinkertons increasingly took on paid work breaking up strikes for Gilded Age industrialists. Today, Lindsay is joined by S. Paul O'Hara, an Associate Professor of History at Xavier University, to discuss Allan Pinkerton's determination to build the company brand and cultivate his own mythology. Tom Horn first arrived in Wyoming in 1892. He had spent most of a decade chasing Apache down in Arizona before diving headfirst into a feud known as the Pleasant Valley War. Although Tom's actions during the feud remain unclear, he most likely fought on the side of the Tewksbury's against their avowed enemies, the Grahams. And despite wearing the badge of a Gila County Sheriff's deputy, Horn would participate in the lynching of at least three men. This was followed by a stint with the Pinkertons, a job that saw Tom working on the behest of the cattle barons up in Johnson County, Wyoming. Once again, Horn's involvement is somewhat shrouded in mystery, but he is suspected of assassinating at least two men on behalf of the large ranchers. Whether or not that's true is unknown, but Tom did help to put an end to the notorious Red Sash Gang. Next, Horn would drift south and find employment as a Range Detective at John Coble's Iron Mountain Ranch, doing pretty much the same work he had done in Johnson County: investigating stock theft and working as an enforcer for large spreads. The only difference was that Horn had lost all faith in the judicial system by this point. Rather than waste time arresting criminals only for the courts to set them free, Tom resolved to handle business his way, and it just so happened that his way entailed a whole helluva lot of killing. So the company pivoted, sending Pinkerton detectives out to do what they did best, traveling throughout the west in search of the nation's most audacious and elusive bank-robbing desperados. Regarding Old West feuds, Arizona's Pleasant Valley War ranked among the most violent. Also known as the Graham-Tewksbury feud, this conflict would rage on for over a decade and see a death toll from between twenty to fifty men, some of whom fell at the hands of a notorious up-and-coming killer by the name of Tom Horn. And, of course, this would not be the last feud that Tom was involved in. After leaving Arizona, he'd hire on with the Pinkertons, and it wouldn't be long before they sent him up to a little place in Wyoming known as Johnson County. The cattle barons seemed to be getting fed up with the rustlers and looking for men like Tom Horn, who weren't afraid of getting their hands dirty. At the peak of their existence, the Pinkerton Detective Agency was *the* crime fighting machine in the United States. They hired the first female detective, notoriously saved Abraham Lincoln from being killed on a train by dressing him in a disguise, among other feats. But, they admittedly had their flaws as well. However, without the Pinkertons' contributions to the industry, we would not have the CIA, FBI, and law enforcement as we know it today. If you've ever seen The Wild Bunch, 3:10 to Yuma, or played Red Dead Redemption series of games you're probably familiar with The Pinkertons. Created by a Scottish immigrant in the 1850's, In the beginning The Pinkerton Detective Agency did everything from spy on the confederacy during the civil war to protecting Abe Lincoln on the train ride to his inauguration. Later they made their name stopping outlaw gangs from robbing trains (i.e. Jesse James, The Wild Bunch). And even later they gave into greed and began infiltrating trade unions and were used as strike breakers against those trying to fight for their fair share and acceptable working conditions. Yeah these guys went from Heroes to Zeroes and we're covering the whole fall.
This was the #1 most listened to Old West" story I did for 1001 Heroes podcast. Mike Hurwitz gave th ok to use his Ballad of Tom Horn from his recordings. Tom Horn was a factor in Geronimo's surrender, and rode as a scout for Nelson and Miles. He was there when Ed Schiefflin gave Tombstone its name. He worked for the Pinkertons for awhile, his methods were considered too harsh, and then he signed on with the Cattlemen's Association to rid the country of rustlers. Years back his dream had been to have his own ranch and get married- but a gang of cattle rustlers stole all his cattle and burned down his ranch when he was away ion business- after that he swore vengeance against all of them- anywhere. He wrote his autobiography while in jail awaiting his changing for the killing of a young boy which he swore he didn't do. I share some of it in this story. Learn more about your ad choices. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Micha Frazer-Carroll, columnist at The Independent, to discuss her recent book Mad World: The Politics of Mental Health. First, Sam and Emma touch on Trump attorney John Lauro, who made the rounds on the Sunday shows yesterday, and specifically the strategy that he and Trump are attempting to cast doubt on holding the January 6th trial in D.C., and moving it to the..."diverse" location of...West Virginia. Then, they're joined by Micha and get started by discussing Micha's journey and struggle with her own mental health, and how those experiences shaped her reporting and scholarship that went into "Mad World." She then discusses some of the history behind how mental health issues and other characteristics of people's gender & sexuality, their marital status, among other things were traced as pathologies for people's mental state in a way to categorize and stigmatize them, as opposed to identifiers and signifiers of someone's emotional and mental state that were simply lived experiences within the context of their personal lives. Micha, Sam and Emma also discuss how the idea of "stress" and the struggle with mental health within society, especially under global capitalism, is extremely individualized, as opposed to an idea of approaching stress as something systematized and baked into the trappings of labor, incarceration, homophobia, and other issues within and without the workplace. They discuss the history of asylums within the UK and how that, and how "mad" people or people suffering from "madness", paralleled that of how mentally ill people were treated in the U.S. as well. Emma brings up this idea of mental health "awareness" and how awareness of the vitality of mental healthcare has been completely saturated without any tangible approach to actual policy that would mitigate the structures and circumstances that exacerbate people's mental health struggles, the ones that require that so-called "awareness". And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma discuss Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir's recent comments about military action against Palestinians, something Sam referred to as "Praise-To-Slay", before diving into Steven Crowder's advertisement (featuring the Majority Report!) promoting a great" Re-Platforming" that's coming up tomorrow. They then discuss striking LA hotel workers outside the Fairmont Miramont getting forcibly dispersed by LAPD officers and hotel security basically masquerading as Pinkertons deputized by police. They also touch on some of Universal Studios' hardball against WGA and SAG-AFTRA picketers by, as Adam Conover, outlines, literally uprooting the sidewalk the picketers are attempting to walk on. They then turn to Ron DeSantis desperately trying to get Iowans to care about him seeing a guy in San Francisco shitting on the street, then touch on a huge appeals court decision in Mississippi turning over a Jim Crow-era voting law.
