ANDREW GARFIELD BRINGS A SWAGGER TO SPIDER-MAN THAT WE WEREN'T READY FOR!
The Comic Crusaders Podcast is swinging into the Spider-Verse with Roseanne A. Brown to talk about Ghost-Spider: Broken Chords, a graphic novel that gives Gwen Stacy a lot more than a villain to punch. This story puts Gwen between her life as Ghost-Spider, her place in The Mary Janes, pressure at home with George Stacy, the legacy of her late mother Helen, and the complicated arrival of music superstar Trixie St. Dixie. Add in Spider-Punk, Arachnid, and the battle over Magnolia House, and this book becomes a sharp, emotional, music-fueled ride with real heart. What makes this episode special is how much the conversation goes beyond surface-level Marvel talk. Roseanne gets into character, emotional stakes, music as identity, the lure of fame, and how Gwen's journey becomes a story about choosing who you are before somebody else makes that choice for you. If you love Spider-Verse stories with actual soul, this one is for you. Get your copy of Ghost-Spider: Broken Chords by Roseanne A. Brown Now! Nuevo tomo titulado "Spiderman: Dividido".
Show notes provided by Joe Peluso"Spider-Man, Spider-Man does whatever a spider can..." Well yes, but not as easily as you might think? Join your hosts James and Joe as they saunter down to Joe's Comic Corner and take another trip back to the swinging sixties and discover just how difficult it can get for everyone's favorite Web-Slinger. The guys take a deep dive into "The Master Planner Saga" (issues # 's 31, 32 & 33), and with the events that culminate in issue #33, a diving suit might be a good piece of equipment to have on hand for our hapless hero. These are the seminal issues that introduce Peter Parker's firstdays in college at ESU, Gwen Stacy and Harry Osborne. Also we met the mysterious Master Planner who is purloining any and all things of atomic nature. Aunt May is in the hospital--again. Peter and Betty are about to split up. And Spider-man goes through a gauntlet of goons that leaves him badly battered and bruised! It's three issues of massive mayhem as Spidey races the clock to save his dying aunt from a disease he inflicted upon her. Yeah, the old Parker luck knows no boundaries. As James so aptly points out at the start of this podcast--"There's a ton of soap opera in these books!" Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, at this point in the series, knew what their fans wanted, and they were not shy in delivering the goods. All the madness comes to one of the most classic conclusions early in issue #33 when Spider-Man performs one of his most iconic feats that still resonates with Spidey fans to this day! But even at that point, the story is not yet concluded as even more goons stand in Peter's way. And what do you think happens? POW! BAM! WHACK! Spideytriumphs! But with victory also comes defeat. This is classic Amazing Spider-Man. It's exciting, colorful, emotional and more fun than a barrel of arachnids! YECH!!! Oh, who is The Master Planner? I ain't telling. He's a really scary dude!

A few weeks ago, comics lost one of the legends of the late Silver and Bronze Age. While Gerry Conway is probably best known for his work on Spider-Man at Marvel, where he killed Gwen Stacy and creating the Punisher, and to a somewhat lesser extent creating Firestorm at DC, Conway had a solid run on both Batman and Detective Comics, as well as writing other Batman stories. In memory of Conway, this week we're reading three stories he wrote. We have a one-off featuring the return of the Silver Age Mystery Analysts of Gotham City, a two parter featuring Two-Face and a story from Brave and the Bold where Batman solves a space mystery with Green Lantern and the Guardians of the Universe The Adventure of the Houdini Whodunit (Batman V.1 # 295) Half a Hero is Better than None (Batman V.1 # 346, Detective Comics V.1 # 513) One of Us is Not One of Us (The Brave and the Bold V.1 # 173-174) Check out our current ranking list at www.comicsxf.com/batchat-rankings/ Thanks to Geri Nonnewitz for our podcast logo Support the show on Patreon at www.patreon.com/batchatwithmattandwill

In this episode, Michael and Benjamin are wading deep into the gutters of Marvel's latest Spider-man reboot to discuss Ultimate Spider-Man (2024) Volume 1 (Issues 1-6) and Volume 2: The News (Issues 7-12) by Jonathan Hickman, Marco Checchetto, and David Messina. Is this 2024 reimagining a light snack or a massive epic?We look at everything from Peter Parker's 35-year-old power fantasy to Harry Osborn's consistently dreadful decision-making skills. no matter how old he is. Spider-Man might not be a dweeby 16-year-old anymore, but the classic Parker luck. and the looming threat of the Sinister Six, is still alive and well.Spoilers ahead for all 12 issues!Episode Highlights:The 35-Year-Old Power Fantasy: How Hickman shifted the target demographic from tween nerds to millennials dealing with mid-life crises. Peter has the supermodel wife, the great kids, and a steady job; so why does he still feel like he's destined for more?A World Without Aunt May: Exploring the fascinating alternate timeline where Ben Parker lives to start a his own newspaper with a surprisingly not-terrible J. Jonah Jameson. The Iron Man Ex Machina: Breaking down the "Picotech" (or McGuffin-tech) suit gifted by Tony Stark and how this tech-heavy, adult Spider-Man differs from the analogue, web-fluid-mixing teenager we all know.Accidentally Creating Venom: Why giving your advanced super-suit a sentient AI personality so you have someone to talk to is a fundamentally terrible idea. The Dinner Party of Doom: Reviewing the bizarrely brilliant, non-superheroic issue dedicated entirely to the social anxiety of Peter, Mary Jane, Harry, and Gwen Stacy awkwardly navigating a double date. The Not-Sinister Six: Analysing the shadowy cabal running the five boroughs, featuring Kingpin, Mr. Negative, Mole Man, Mysterio, Kraven, and Black Cat.Harry Osborn's Daddy Issues: Why programming Norman Osborn's voice (we all heard Willem Dafoe) into the Green Goblin suit is the single worst decision Harry makes in the entire run.Coming Up Next MonthMay is a month of many comics! On this episode, we go back to 2009 for a great conversation with Gerry Conway, a writer whose career has taken some fascinating turns across comics and television. We talk about why Gerry stepped away from a successful run in TV, writing shows like Law & Order and Diagnosis: Murder, to return to DC Comics for a surprising and, frankly, underappreciated project, The Last Days of Animal Man.That decision ends up sparking what you could call a full third act comeback in comics, leading him back into the Marvel universe and onto Spider-Man once again.Along the way, we dig into some of Gerry's most iconic work, from the still controversial and era defining “death of Gwen Stacy” in The Amazing Spider-Man to the massive, history making 1976 Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man treasury edition.
Spider-Man faces Venom in a consequential battle. Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy return .The boys talk evil coffee corporations, The Boys, Invincible, Foxy Shazam, media literacy, Dr. Strangelove, Donald Trump, fascism, and autism. Search engine optimization, do your thing!

It's the 1930s and Peter Parker is a private detective by day, vigilante Spider-Man by night. Things were going well until a certain dame walked into his office to ask Peter to solve the case of her father's murder. The dame's name? GWEN STACY! This case may not only break George Stacy's police department, but Spider-Man himself!

Specifically, the alternate dimension showcased throughout Season 2 of Peacemaker is in fact the Nazi-ruled timeline of Earth-X. Subsequently, the "Peaceful Hips" emoji, which is based on a dance sequence from Season 2's opening dance number, has come under intense scrutiny, leading some to speculate that it is in fact a reference to an anti-Nazi Donald Duck short and/or the Nazi swastika. In a statement released via Twitter on Sept. 28, the official Fortnite Status account noted, "We're disabling the Peaceful Hips Emote in Fortnite as we inquire into our partner's creative intentions in this collab emote. Assuming it's not coming back, we'll issue refunds in the next few days. Sorry folks."

"Women in Refrigerators": Understanding Fridging in Superhero MediaIn this eye-opening episode of Superhero Ethics, hosts Matthew and Riki tackle the controversial topic of "fridging" with special guest Jessica Plummer, a comic book historian with expertise in gender representation. The term "fridging," coined by comic writer Gail Simone in 1999, refers to the killing, maiming, or assault of female characters primarily to advance a male character's storyline. What exactly is fridging and where did the term come from? The term "women in refrigerators" originated from a 1994 Green Lantern issue where Kyle Rayner's girlfriend Alexandra DeWitt was murdered and stuffed in a refrigerator by villain Major Force. This served solely to motivate Kyle's character development and revenge arc. The podcast explores how this pattern repeats across comics, films, and TV shows, with female characters frequently introduced only to be brutalized for male character development. Why is fridging problematic beyond just character death? The discussion highlights how fridging isn't just about women dying - it's about the specific ways their bodies are violated and displayed, often in sexualized or gratuitously violent ways. The hosts examine how female characters are disproportionately subjected to these fates compared to male characters, despite already being underrepresented in superhero media to begin with. How does fridging differ from other character deaths? The podcast examines the key differences between fridging and other character deaths. Male characters often die heroically in battle with "noble sacrifices" and frequently return from death, while female characters are more commonly assaulted in domestic settings like kitchens, portrayed as helpless victims rather than heroes making choices, and rarely return from death. What about fridging and race in media? The conversation expands to discuss similar patterns with characters of color, who are often introduced as side characters only to be killed to motivate white protagonists. While the panel debates whether "fridging" should specifically refer to violence against women or could apply more broadly, they agree the core issue is about which characters get to be protagonists versus disposable plot devices.Other topics discussed:The original Green Lantern fridging incident that gave the trope its nameHow Black Widow's death in Avengers: Endgame exhibits elements of fridgingThe repeated visual motif of female character deaths (like Gwen Stacy's fall)Examples of media that subvert fridging expectations, like John Wick and DaredevilHow some characters have "climbed out of the fridge" through character resurrection and reimaginingWriters and creators who have worked to challenge and change this tropeThe relationship between shock value and fridging**************************************************************************This episode is a production of Superhero Ethics, a The Ethical Panda Podcast and part of the TruStory FM Entertainment Podcast Network.
