Happy Sunday Worship! I am happy to share Reverend John Kinney's sermon he preached from Bible Book of Samuel.
In today's episode of The Personal Finance Podcast, we will talk to Derrick Kinney about Money Expert Why You Should Give Before You're Rich . He reveals why starting with generosity unlocks exponential wealth growth, sharing how a burned-out manufacturing owner increased sales 20% in three months by connecting his business to funding an overseas schoolhouse. Kenny breaks down his "Good Money Framework" that flips traditional financial advice by using purpose as motivation, explains why Harvard research shows spending even $5 on others creates measurable brain satisfaction that spending on yourself can't match, and provides his 30-minute daily income strategy that helped clients earn $25,000+ raises by focusing on company value creation rather than begging for standard cost-of-living increases. Plus, Kinney introduces his Simple Teen Success program addressing the communication crisis where 80% of teens avoid talking to adults, sharing proven scripts for engaging adults at Target encounters and sporting events that unlock scholarships, internships, and opportunities most teens never access. Occasio Winery, founded in 2008 by John Kinney, is a boutique winery in Livermore Valley, California, a historic wine region with roots dating back to the 19th century. Named after the Latin word for “opportunity,” Occasio was born from a passion to revive Livermore's winemaking legacy while showcasing its unique terroir. Starting with small-lot productions, the winery quickly gained recognition for crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines that honor heritage varietals and the region's gravelly soils and microclimate. Today, Occasio remains a family-run operation, dedicated to quality and sustainability, with a tasting room at 2245B S Vasco Rd, Livermore, welcoming visitors to experience its story firsthand. Occasio specializes in small-lot wines, focusing on Rhone (Mourvèdre, Grenache, Syrah, and Petite Sirah), Bordeaux (Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc), and Burgundy (Pinot Noir and Chardonnay) varietals. Its winemaking emphasizes minimal intervention to let Livermore's terroir shine, blending traditional techniques with modern precision. For example, the Cabernet Sauvignon showcases intense black fruit and structured tannins, reflecting Livermore's Bordeaux-like conditions, while Grenache provides vibrant, fruit-forward excitement, broadening the portfolio's appeal. Occasio's commitment to heritage grapes sets it apart in a region often dominated by Cabernet, while the sustainable vineyard practices of its growers ensure long-term environmental stewardship. Occasio is exploring ways to deepen its connection to Livermore Valley's heritage while embracing innovation. One such innovation was a return to crafting aromatized wines like vermouth. Plans include expanding small-lot experiments with lesser-known varietals, especially aromatic white wines, highlight the region's diversity. The winery aims to grow its tasting room experiences, offering more events like wine-and-food pairings and educational classes to engage visitors.

In this episode we challenge the ideas about invisibility of Asian Americans in the urban Midwest by discussing Rebecca Jo Kinney's Mapping AsiaTown Cleveland: Race and Redevelopment in the Rust Belt (Temple University Press, 2025). Mapping AsiaTown Cleveland links the contemporary development of Cleveland's “AsiaTown” to the multiple and fragmented histories of Cleveland's Asian American communities from the 1940s to present. Kinney's sharp insights include Japanese Americans who resettled from internment camps, Chinese Americans food purveyors, and Asian American community leaders who have had to fight for visibility and representation in city planning—even as the Cleveland Asian Festival is branded as a marquee “diversity” event for the city. Importantly, this book contributes to a growing field of Asian American studies in the U.S. Midwest by foregrounding the importance of region in racial formation and redevelopment as it traces the history of racial segregation and neighborhood diversity in Cleveland during the 20th and 21st centuries. Rebecca Jo Kinney is a Fulbright Scholar and an interdisciplinary teacher and scholar of American Studies and Ethnic Studies at Bowling Green State University, Ohio, USA. Dr. Kinney's award-winning first book, Beautiful Wasteland: The Rise of Detroit as America's Postindustrial Frontier argues that contemporary stories told about Detroit's potential for rise enables the erasure of white supremacist systems. Her third book, Making Home in Korea: The Transnational Lives of Adult Korean Adoptees, is based on research undertaken while she was a Fulbright Scholar in South Korea. Her research has appeared in American Quarterly, Food, Culture & Society, Verge: Studies in Global Asia, Radical History Review, Race&Class, among other journals. In the summer of 1977, the leaders of a small Iron Range town made a rather bold announcement: Kinney, Minn., had seceded from the United States. The statement was tongue-in-cheek, but the town's situation wasn't funny. The story of the Republic of Kinney is one of dismissed town needs, a wacky, bar-born plan and the power of media attention. Reporter Christa Lawler joined host Erica Pearson to share Kinney's story.

During a time when ICE raids tear families apart, current administration policies criminalize asylum seekers, and cruelty has become policy, how do people of faith respond? This is the question we ask in this episode of Just Politics. Our guest is Sister of St. Joseph Janet Kinney, the executive director of the Long Island Immigration Clinic, whose ministry with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Brentwood has become a lifeline for immigrants and asylum seekers facing increasingly hostile conditions. From the rise of authoritarian immigration policies to the alarming normalization of deportations and detention centers, Kinney doesn't flinch. She shares how the Clinic stands firm, offering accompaniment and legal support even when the political tides are brutal. Kinney also reflects on the shifting landscape of immigration in the United States—from rising fear in immigrant communities to the moral failures of our current political leadership—and how her team provides legal support, safety planning, and community-building to those who need it most. What makes this conversation powerful isn't just Kinney's honesty about the stakes; it's her unshakable commitment to hope. We talk about where she finds it, how she sustains it, and why Catholic social teaching demands both prayer and action. This episode is a reminder that bravery is contagious and that even when the horrors persist, so do we.

In January 1999, Miriam Illes was gunned down in her kitchen while on the phone with a friend. There were no witnesses. No fingerprints. And the few pieces of physical evidence—an oversized shoe print, a cigarette butt, and a homemade silencer—seemed to point nowhere. Her estranged husband, Dr. Richard Illes, was a respected heart surgeon with a thriving career, a new girlfriend, and a bitter custody battle underway. He also had an airtight alibi—until investigators started pulling at the seams. It was a murder that some called “almost perfect,” but ultimately it unraveled under the weight of its own misdirection. In this episode of the HAYVN Hubcast, host Nancy Sheed sat down with Rachael Mahoney, founder of Kinney Lane, a prepared foods company rooted in wellness, simplicity, and community connection. What started as a personal journey toward health became a mission to nourish others, literally and emotionally, with every meal. Rachael shares how her summers spent on Kinney Lane in upstate New York planted the seeds for her love of fresh food and wholesome living. From working in ad tech to launching her food business out of her home kitchen while pregnant, her story is one of grit, intuition, and deep listening, to her body, her community, and her calling. Key Takeaways: A business born from struggle: Rachael's own health and fertility challenges led her to radically change her lifestyle and, ultimately, to start Kinney Lane. Trusting the timing: She didn't have it all figured out when she started. Rachael focused on doing what she could with what she had, even if it meant 4 a.m. kitchen shifts with an infant in tow. Community-centered growth: Listening closely to her customers helped her refine her offerings and expand into meal delivery. Team building takes time: Finding the right hires was a five-year journey, but now her business can thrive without her being in the kitchen every day. Infertility, resilience, and joy: Rachael vulnerably shares the emotional moment she found out she was pregnant after being told it wasn't possible. That turning point gave her the push to pursue her business wholeheartedly. If you've ever wondered when the right time to start something is—or how to turn your personal experience into purpose—this conversation will inspire you. Growing up in the 1980s and 1990s during Hanalei river's “boating wars,” Billy unpacks the challenges and opportunities for local people to connect and reconnect with ʻāina amidst unrestrained tourism and development, thereby redirecting the future of sacred places like Hāʻena. As the Assistant Director of the Hui Makaʻāinana o Makana he carries forward the group's mission to interpret, restore, care and protect the natural and cultural resources within the Hāʻena State Park. Bob Kinney is a recovered alcoholic after an 18-year battle of severe alcoholism. He is a father of six children and has 12 grandchildren. He is a veteran with a heart for homeless veterans. He is a Christian, retired carpenter, and devoted father and grandpa, residing in New Hope, MN. He is the author of Kill Me or Cure Me, a memoir published in 2024 which relives the story of his addiction and eventual recovery: Kill Me or Cure Me: A Message of True Recovery from Addiction. This is a true story about addiction, recovery, and the destructive effects on family and loved ones. Treatment after treatment, meeting after meeting, and medications of every kind could not cure the craving or satisfy the emptiness brought on by my addiction. And none of which eased the quilt or shame he felt from the pain he had caused others. So, into the perpetual relapse he went, struggling for sobriety and attempting to conquer the craving, the great force feeding the addiction. But this story does not end in defeat, a story sadly too common in this world. Rather this is a story to find an answer, to see ourselves for what we are and what we can become, being set free of this nightmare, and the ability to have true recovery and restoration of life. In this interview, Bob shares a story or two of his experience of being at the lowest point of life from alcohol addiction where he lost everything and became homeless - his point of no return. Then, how he turned it around finding recovery and re-establishing relationships with his children and grandchildren. He wants to share how much he appreciates sobriety and life as a father/grandfather thanks to our loving and gracious God. His daughter, Colleen Schaeffel, who wrote her own memoir (Do You Believe in Me) is also present in the interview to talk about her dad: the dad she helped see his way to recovery. In her book Colleen tells the true story of the perfect family torn apart by addiction. On Saturday, November 2, 2024 15-year-old Tripp Brazeale headed out of his house in Forrest City, Arkansas on a four-wheeler. After dark and into the early morning hours of Sunday November 3, Tripp, two family members, and a friend were hanging out in a part of the woods called Crow Creek, riding ATVs. Now it’s mostly illegal to ride four-wheelers on paved roads in Arkansas and in many other places, but out there in the country, it’s a common mode of transportation for teens. There were police officers nearby that night. Deputy Trey Bynum and Sgt. David Kinney from the St. Francis County Sheriff’s Office were responding to a call regarding with a missing girl and boy from Cross County. Deputy Bynum wrote in his report that while they were checking out a residence in the woods, they heard ATVs driving around erratically. When they finished up and got back into their vehicles, Sgt. Kinney went to go find them. He was the first one to make contact; he was talking to the people on one of the four-wheelers, basically telling everyone to slow down. As Deputy Bynum approached, he saw one of the four-wheelers slow down like he was about to stop but then, he said, take off and pass him at “a high rate of speed.” The driver of that ATV was Tripp Brazeale. At that point Deputy Bynum started his pursuit, trying to pull Tripp over. The high speed chase went on up a hill and back down a hill, and that’s when something happened...something that caused Tripp to abruptly stop and jump off his four wheeler at 12:42 AM and run into the woods. He didn't come back after Deputy Bynum called after him. He fled into the woods and kept running. And then, he disappeared. Many of my patients struggle with this, and in this episode, I'm diving into why this happens and what you can do to fix it.Waking up in the middle of the night is often linked to cortisol imbalances, stress, and circadian rhythm disruptions. While many people try to fix it by taking sleep aids before bed, the real key is resetting your body's natural sleep-wake cycle. In Today's Episode We Discuss:Why a surge in cortisol often wakes you up at 3 AMHow stress and adrenal imbalances throw off your sleep cycleWhy melatonin and cortisol work in opposition (and how to balance them)The best bedtime routine to support deeper sleepHow morning sunlight exposure can reset your circadian rhythmThe role of adrenal support and relaxation techniques in fixing nighttime wake-upsA simple 10-minute “toes up” practice to calm your nervous systemIf you've been struggling with restless nights, stress, or waking up too early, this episode is packed with actionable strategies to help you regulate your sleep and wake up feeling refreshed.Dr. Kinney's Sleep Reset Formula:1️⃣ Limit screens before bed (reduce blue light exposure)2️⃣ Try a small dose of melatonin (1-3mg) to regulate sleep-wake timing3️⃣ Get natural morning sunlight before 10 AM (or use a lightbox)4️⃣ Support your adrenals with adaptogens, B vitamins, and magnesium5️⃣ Practice relaxation during the day (Dr. Kinney's “toes up” method)Give these strategies a few weeks, and you'll notice a big difference in your sleep quality!Want More Support?Discount Code: POD25 - https://optimal-harmony-with-dr-kinney.myshopify.comWork with me: www.drerinkinney.comFollow me on Instagram: @drkinney for more sleep and health tipsListen to past episodes on stress, adrenal health, and sleep optimization
Welcome back to the Dr. Kinney Show! In this solo episode, I'm diving into one of the most misunderstood health concerns I see in my practice—thyroid dysfunction. So many women come in with classic hypothyroid symptoms—fatigue, weight gain, constipation, brain fog—only to be told by their doctor that their thyroid is "normal."But here's the truth: TSH alone isn't enough to assess thyroid health. Many thyroid imbalances go undiagnosed because traditional lab testing doesn't provide the full picture. In this episode, I'll break down what tests you actually need, what your results really mean, and why your symptoms matter more than a lab reference range. In Today's Episode We Discuss:Common symptoms of hypothyroidism that often get dismissedWhy TSH alone isn't enough to diagnose thyroid issuesThe six essential thyroid tests you need:TSHFree T4Free T3Reverse T3T3 UptakeThyroid AntibodiesHow low T3 levels and poor conversion impact metabolism, energy, and weightThe connection between thyroid function, stress, and gut healthHow Hashimoto's (thyroid autoimmunity) often goes undiagnosedThe difference between synthetic (Synthroid) and natural thyroid medicationsWhy addressing root causes—like nutrient deficiencies, mold, infections, and adrenal health—is key to healingIf you've been told your thyroid is "fine" but still feel off, this episode is for you. You deserve to feel your best—and that starts with getting the right testing and working with a provider who listens.Resources & Next Steps:Want to work with me?
