Things are as metaphysical as they've ever been on Vintage Cinema Rewind. This week, the journey into the heart of the Zone continues with our Deep Dive on Andrei Tarkovsky's Stalker! Blake, Michael, and the other guy have successful breached this strange, strange land. Now, all that awaits them is a road of baffling trials before they can reach the Room—a mythical chamber where all their greatest desires will be realized. But along the way, they've have to contend with all number of horrors, both within and without. Most significantly, can Michael survive the meat-grinder—a hallway which portends all manner of spiritual catastrophes?

Kreativität bei Benennungen ist nicht immer zielführend. Gerade bei Marken mit Erkennungswert. Mike hat endlich S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Heart of Chornobyl gespielt, konnte leider nicht so viel, wie er wollte (und sollte). Es braucht vermutlich ukrainische Entwickler, um dieses einzigarte Spielerlebnis zu schaffen, zwischen Shooter, Survival, Rollenspiel, mit einer oppressiven Atmosphäre gespeist aus den Überresten der Sowjetunion und den Eindrücken des Krieges. Her husband Ron Gillespie got one ordering him to end the affair or die, and on August 19, 1977, after a phone call whose contents Mary never learned, Ron grabbed his pistol, drove off, and struck a tree at a nearby intersection. Police found the gun had been fired once, the postmortem showed his blood alcohol at 1.5 times the legal limit despite friends describing him as a teetotaler, and the crash was ruled an accident. The letters resumed and spread to elected officials, and in 1983 Mary pulled over her bus to tear down a sign threatening her daughter and found a box rigged with a booby-trapped pistol that failed to fire. Police traced the gun to her brother-in-law Paul Freshour, who was convicted of attempted murder on the strength of a disputed handwriting test despite an alibi. The letters kept coming from Columbus for the entire decade Freshour sat in prison, one of them mailed to Freshour himself, and six months after his release, when Unsolved Mysteries aired the case, the network received its own note signed The Circleville Writer.From there the episode moves to Westfield, New Jersey, where Derek and Maria Broaddus paid $1.3 million for 657 Boulevard in June 2014 and found a letter in the mailbox before they'd moved in, addressed to the new owner and signed The Watcher. The writer claimed his grandfather had watched the house in the 1920s and his father in the 1960s, named the Honda minivan out front, knew the ages and nicknames of the couple's three children, and asked whether the house would be filled with "young blood." Later letters described which bedrooms faced the street and asked whether the children would be afraid to play alone in the basement. Westfield police questioned the Langford family next door, a private investigator and a former FBI agent named Robert Lenehan built profiles, and a DNA test on one envelope came back female but matched no suspect. The Broadduses never spent a night in the house, sued the previous owners John and Andrea Woods over a similar letter received days before closing, and were denied permission to subdivide the lot in 2017. Two weeks after renters moved in, a fourth letter arrived promising car accidents, fires, and dead pets, and the case remains unsolved with the house still in the family's hands.

Some people are just not able to handle being put in the Friend Zone. It's a pretty common thing. Two people meet by circumstance. Maybe they're college students who have a class together, or they could be co-workers in an office. They get to know each other, and they become really good friends. They end up spending a lot of time hanging out together outside of work or school. They develop a close relationship, maybe even confiding in each other and having some deep conversations. Then there's a problem that comes in. And I know this doesn't just happen in male-female relationships, and I don't have any statistics or studies to back this up; it's just anecdotal. But from what I've seen and read, one of the people, commonly the woman, sees the relationship as platonic. They're just wonderful friends, and there's no romance involved. But her male friend, thinks otherwise. He's developed feelings for this woman, and thinks she might have feelings for him too. Eventually he might express those feelings verbally, or maybe he waits for what he thinks is the right moment and tries to kiss her. That's when things fall apart. She explains to him that she sees him not as a romantic partner, but just as a close friend. She just put him in the Friend Zone. And different people handle this in different ways. He's gonna be disappointed of course, but what about beyond that? After he declared his feelings for her, can they still be friends? Sometimes they can. But not always. My guest today, Marina, has experienced this. She told this story on the podcast in one of the earliest episodes, back in 2019.
