This week we read "Space Boy" by Stephen McCranie. Discussion (and spoilers) for the episode will cover either volumes 1 and 2 of the tankobon-sized graphic novels, or up to episode 32 of the Webtoon. We'll spend half of the episode talking about the Webtoon format, and then get into this soft scifi story about a girl from space (also there is a boy). We'll talk about netgear, high school, and also learn that the antithesis of “manic pixie dream-girl” is in fact “moody emo dream-boy.” Music by Sleuth. Our next episode will cover volumes 1&2 of "Descending Stories" by Haruko Kumota.

This week we read "The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Cartoonist" by Adrian Tomine, diving deep into the most negative parts of one cartoonist's psyche. We talk about the important place of “sad old man” comics in comics history, mumblecore, lonely book signings, and how cilantro salad is cringe (but only metaphorically). Also how important format is to the storytelling in this book. Music by Sleuth Our next episode will cover volumes 1&2 of "Space Boy" by Stephen McCranie.

Wisdom Wednesdays-#361 December 27 The Strong Within Daily Affirmation Podcast I'm Upgrading The master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried. ~ (not sure who said it as I have seen multiple attributions from Confucius to Stephen McCranie to Yoda of Star Wars) Sometimes it would nice to be ordinary, to not worry about whether you're getting better, or if you're good enough already. Sometimes it'd be nice to not care about how you're perceived, or how well of a job you did, and what the future will hold for us. Sometimes it'd be nice to be kinder to ourselves in the pursuits of becoming who we're meant to be. And if you're listening to this podcast, I'm pretty sure you're like me where you want more for your life, where you want to be better for yourself and for the people around you, where you want to be constantly challenged because you've found joy in growth…and remembering the great lesson you learned, that being comfortable isn't always the best road. I've lived a life being very critical of myself. I figured the more I could keep telling myself why I failed, then the more I would learn from it and become better. And while I kept working on self-improvement, I kept holding myself back because of the unkind way I was dealing with myself. While I'm sure I improved in some areas, I regressed in many other areas because of my unkind ways towards myself. In fact, I trained my subconscious to begin hating me. Our subconscious doesn't know the difference between truth or fiction…it's only a mirror reflecting what you show or tell it. I've spent a good portion of my life reading, listening to, or seeking self-improvement techniques. And while I kept reading and trying to learn ways to become better, something felt very wrong…because I always felt crappy. I put on the mask of happiness for everyone else, but I could feel the spark of who I was dying silently within me. And while I didn't know how to change at the time, I knew that what I was doing wasn't producing the results I wanted…and so I did the only thing I knew how to…I began changing the dialogue I utilized towards myself. And while I'm not perfect, I continually work not to just become better, but I work to become kinder to myself. Kindness doesn't mean I give up easily, in fact it makes me more relentless as I encourage myself to find better ways around my obstacles. And through that kindness, it gives me more energy as I become my best advocate. It's like that teacher, parent, friend, or coach who believed in you…you gained more resolve and energy because you knew they believed in you…and if they believed in you then it meant they thought you could do it. The power of someone believing in us is a wonderful gift. So now anytime I make a mistake, I work to believe in myself like others did in me. When I make a mistake, it's a perfect chance for me to change my focus from saying I'm a piece of crap for not being good enough or that I messed up royally in that project, event, or relationship…into saying something more positive and reminding myself that there is a great learning opportunity here. So I'm going to challenge you to be better with me, not by berating yourself, but by being kinder to yourself. I'm going to challenge you to change your internal dialogue from, “I'm a mess up, I'm a failure, I'm so stupid or that was so stupid of me,” or whatever hateful thing you could say…and instead say, “I am upgrading.” I want to remind you that you are learning from every fall, you are bettering yourself by going through your mistakes and seeing them as lessons not as ending points, and you are becoming your own best advocate believing in the greatness of yourself again. You are not becoming obsolete as the world keeps moving forward…you're upgrading yourself constantly…by challenging yourself and seeing your mistakes as necessary, and you are becoming kinder to yourself on your journeys. You've come to this podcast to become better. I want you to really hear me when I say this…so pause your mind for a second and listen…you can't become better if you aren't loving yourself. You can't become happier or more joyful if you're continually finding ways to hate who you are and what your perceived failures are. And while you can live a life of getting by, you can't live a life of fulfillment focusing on why you never have enough or are enough. You are enough! It's not that you're failing, it's that you are constantly learning and upgrading to become the best version of yourself. Today's Personal Commitment:When you make a mistake, or call yourself a failure…change your dialogue to say… I'm upgrading. It's not a pass to give up on things, but it's a different way of handling the issues in front of you. So this week I'm going to challenge you to add this phrase to your vocabulary and see how you feel and what happens when you make it a bigger part of your narrative. Holy MOLY, what a whirlwind of amazingness it has been in the time between the release of episode 1 of Comic Fuel and Episode 2! We have had a thousand people download and listen to the episode and I have enough questions that I have to wait for another four episodes before I can put out another call for questions. Wow. In this episode, episode 2, we'll discuss project management, the comic creation process, coloring comics, penciling comics, and hosting comics online. The questions came from places like Ireland, India, Brazil, California, and Indiana. For legit #comicfuel we'll hear about why we do art from Stephen McCranie, transitioning into fame and what is at the core of what artistry is really about from "How I Met Your Mother" actor Josh Radnor, and we'll also hear about the art of really listening by famed audio producer Chris Watson. Questions answered in this episode (jump-to specific question times listed below) How many pages should a comic issue be to be printed? How long would it take to make a comic by yourself; scripting, storyboarding, art and lettering; and self publish it? How do you keep up momentum on making comics? How long does it take for a comic book artist to make a comic book? What is the step-by-step process I should go through to choose colors that will look good? What kind of colors can i use? Am I just not being patient enough with myself, or am I trying to fit too much, too zoomed out, into one panel? What websites are best for starting to post a webcomic? Another big announcement is that I spent a lot of time this month creating the Comic Fuel Podcast Wiki (http://comicfuel.wikidot.com/) which will serve as a repository for all questions, notes, and links that are mentioned in the show. Check it out. It took me FOREVER to make, but I'm really proud of it. The show notes for Episode 2 are at: http://comicfuel.wikidot.com/wiki:episode-2 Jump times to go to different parts of the podcast: (00:00) Show Opener (00:44) Show Introduction (06:43) #ComicFuel Break #1: Chris Watson on The Art of Listening (14:25) Question 1: Project Management Question 1 from Kevin in Eire: How do you keep up momentum on making comics? I make a lot of progress when i take a class or a mooc, but when it’s over I feel a bit like OK where to next? (22:55) #ComicFuel Break #2: Stephen McCranie Asking Why We Do Art (31:55) Questions 2, 3, & 4: Comic Creation Process Overview Question 2 from Anjali in Bangalore, India: How long would it take to make a comic by yourself; scripting, storyboarding, art and lettering; and self publish it? Question 3 from Nate in Brazil: As an independent artist who primarily works with digital comics, I'm interested in publishing my material, but I'm afraid the format won't translate as well, and I'll need to cut many pages from chapters so it could fit into what the market deems ideal for print. How many pages should a comic issue be to be printed? Question 5 from Andrew: How long does it take for a comic book artist to make a comic book? (40:40) #ComicFuel Break #3: Josh Radnor Talking About Transitioning as an Artist (44:30) Questions 5 & 6: Coloring Question 5 from Alan: If I have an uncolored comic page, what is the step-by-step process I should go through to choose colors that will look good? Question 6 from Anonymous: I am not professional in using coloring applications like photoshop and gimp If i 'd like to do it manually, what is your advice to me, what is kind of colors can i use? (51:13) Patreon Ad: Spotlight on Scott Bachman (53:58) Question 7: Penciling Kiana, Indiana: So, I adore sketching pretty much everything, It's what I spend the majority of my time doing! Although, when I attempted to begin penciling my comic, I found it to be tedious and frustrating? It seems that whatever I try to draw ends up too small to look nice or have any detail.

When it comes to creating art, it's more than just the process or tools you are using. While those things are major factors in the big picture, pun intended, the philosophies of art are just as important. In this heavy Making Comics Gutter Talk episode, Adam and his co-host Patrick Yurick sit down with Stephen McCranie, artist of "Mal and Chad" and creator of the website Doodle Alley, to discuss everything from Stephen's beginning in art to separating the individual from the individual's work. Yeah, we know. Deep, huh? We pride ourselves in providing creativity-based information, whether it's through the written word or these podcasts, and Stephen's work fits that mold. After reading through Stephen's "Brick by Brick," a collection of artistic essays that act as a guide to comic creation, it just made sense that Stephen needed to be on the show. When it was all said and done, there was a sense of accomplishing a mission, as if our goal of information dissemination was met in a very successful way. However, Stephen was the perfect guest to make this happen. If you're struggling with the mental aspect of being an artist, you're not alone. Furthermore, you're not the first and won't be the last. Consider this a good thing. It means there are people out there like Stephen McCranie who can provide experience-based knowledge and advice to help keep you on your path.
