A super great paragraph from the chapter this week. The greatest have a different view of success and failure that the rest of the world. The world sees failure as a personal setback, a chink in the armor of success. The master sees failure as an important part of progress, just like the cartoonist Stephen McCranie said, "the master has failed more times than the beginner has even tried. The same mental patterns that cause investors to panic-sell during a downturn, chase validation through status purchases, or freeze up when facing big financial decisions -- those are the exact patterns performance coach Jim Murphy has spent decades helping elite athletes overcome. His framework isn't about trying harder. It's about getting aligned. And today he brings it down to the basement to help Stackers apply it to the one game that matters most -- the one you play with your own money and your own life. What You'll Walk Away With The three pillars of extraordinary performance -- belief, freedom, and focus -- and why chasing results instead of these three things is costing you more than you know Why the score, the portfolio balance, and the quarterly statement are all distractions -- and what elite performers focus on instead The resonance framework that helps you recognize when you're making decisions from alignment versus anxiety Four daily goals that reorient your attention from outcomes you can't control to the process that actually produces them Why the same ego patterns that derail pro athletes -- always comparing, never satisfied -- show up identically in how most people handle money The homeless harpist story: what Jim did with his last $100 when he was $90,000 in debt -- and what happened next Why retiring from a career you've tied your identity to can feel exactly like getting cut from a team -- and how to prepare for it before it happens Five questions to ask yourself before any high-stakes decision to know whether you're operating from fear or from genuine conviction The AI warning hiding in this episode -- why an assistant that never disagrees with you might be the most financially dangerous tool in your arsenal What a cancer diagnosis in January taught a performance coach about what the best possible life actually looks like Why This Matters Now In your 40s, the financial pressure is real -- but so is a quieter kind of pressure that rarely gets named. Am I building the right life? Am I making decisions because they matter to me, or because of what other people will think? Jim Murphy's work sits at the intersection of those two questions, and the answer he keeps arriving at is the same one the best investors, the best athletes, and the most contented people share: stop optimizing for the scoreboard and start arranging your days around what actually makes you feel fully alive. From the Basement Jim Murphy joins Joe and OG to walk through the framework behind his new book, The Best Possible Life -- including the desert solitude, the FedEx job, the homeless harpist, and the cancer diagnosis that field-tested everything he teaches. Joe and OG close out the episode with a Psychology Today headline on AI and financial trust -- and OG's story about nearly committing accidental tax fraud because Claude was being extremely encouraging about a box he absolutely should not have checked. Doug arrives with McDonald's trivia in honor of Tax Day and Ray Kroc's first store. Whether the basement scoreboard survived the week is a question best answered with your earbuds in. Performance coach and bestselling author Jim Murphy joins us on The Greatness Machine to unpack what it truly means to live the best possible life. Jim Murphy beschreibt darin, wie wir mehr erreichen können, als wir uns selbst zutrauen – nicht durch Druck oder Selbstoptimierung, sondern durch innere Stärke und Klarheit. Spoiler: Es geht nicht darum, schöner, reicher oder perfekter zu sein. Es geht darum, dein Leben bewusst nach deinen Werten und inneren Wünschen zu gestalten. Ever think about what you believe and how you came up with those beliefs? Many people don't consider the beliefs they have, the things that run their life, aren't even things they decided to believe but are more things they just picked up from someone else. In the yoga world, there are lots of beliefs that teachers think are facts but are just someone's opinion. The idea, for instance, that if you taught a Signature Sequence, your students would get bored. This is just a belief but many teachers tell me this as if it's a fact. Then they work with me in my program, we talk about how they can experiment with a Signature Sequence, they try it in their classes and nothing happens! They find that no one gets bored, no one walks out and in fact, the only thing that changes is that they get better at teaching the sequence! In today's episode, I share much more about beliefs and relate it to yoga teaching. I share from Jim Murphy's book, “Inner Excellence.” I also share an invitation to my free online event on December 11, 2025, “The Yoga Teacher Reset.” Get your spot in this exciting, inspiring event here: https://barebonesyoga.lpages.co/yoga-teacher-reset/

Caring for someone you love when they're going through a significant is one of the greatest privileges of a lifetime - and also one of the hardest seasons you will ever walk. In this episode, I sit down with award winning health journalist and author, Casey Beros. Casey’s latest book, Next of Kin - What to Expect When You’re Expecting to Care for Someone You Love, was born from her deeply personal experience caring for her beloved dad through a terminal diagnosis of mesothelioma. Our conversation is raw, honest, practical and full of heart. We talk about what really happens behind the scenes when someone you love becomes seriously ill, and how to keep showing up with love without completely burning yourself out. Here are just a few of the beautiful takeaways waiting for you: Why there is no “person with the clipboard” - and how to step into your role as an advocate in the medical, legal and emotional side of care, even if you feel totally unprepared. Simple ways to care for yourself when you have “no time” - including Casey’s brilliant micro habits approach that takes just one minute at a time. How to talk about death, grief and the “after” in a healthier way, including what Casey learned from death walker and educator Zenith Virago. A powerful reminder not to wait for “one day” to live your dream life, book the trip and enjoy the people you love while they are still here. Whether you are currently a carer, you love someone who is, or you simply want to be better prepared for life’s inevitable seasons, this episode will hold your hand and gently nudge you into action. Press play, and if you are ready for more support in designing a life you love - even in tough seasons - explore our Dream Life Coaching here: https://www.yourdreamlifestartshere.com/course As always, I’d LOVE to hear what resonated most with you - so please share and let’s keep the conversation going in the Dream Life Podcast Facebook Group here. In this episode, we dive deep into what it truly means to sustain high performance—without losing ourselves along the way. We explore why the relentless pursuit of optimization can leave us exhausted, disconnected, and ultimately unsatisfied, even as our productivity dashboards look more impressive than ever.We sit down with Dr. James Hewitt, a human performance scientist and author of Regenerative Performance, who challenges the contemporary obsession with “optimization.” Instead, he offers a fresh perspective: success is about rhythm, not balance. We discuss how alternating between periods of intense focus and intentional renewal is not just effective, but necessary. Also joining us is Jim Murphy, author of Inner Excellence, whose coaching of elite athletes and leaders centers on training not just the mind, but the heart. Jim's journey—including a literal desert retreat—led him to believe that excellence is grown from within, through the cultivation of peace, confidence, and love, especially under pressure.Together, we examine why greatness isn't something you manufacture through sheer effort. It's something that arises when you let go, reconnect, and cultivate an inner life that is in sync with your values and goals.Five Key Learnings from the Episode:Optimization Fatigue Is Real: Tracking and optimizing every aspect of life can actually diminish well-being and life satisfaction rather than increase it.Rhythm Beats Balance: Sustained high performance depends on deliberate alternation between deep engagement and meaningful renewal, not on chasing a mythical state of balance.Recovery Requires Intention: Proactive, scheduled breaks—including exposure to nature and engaging in supportive social interactions—are critical for true restoration and creativity.Excellence Comes from the Heart: Training your heart—clarifying your life purpose, embracing vulnerability, and mastering the ego—is more impactful than simply mastering skills.Self-Centeredness Is the Core Obstacle: Overcoming the default setting of self-focus opens the door to authentic creativity and connection, but it requires the courage to face discomfort and uncertainty.Get full interviews and bonus content for free! On this episode of The Jon Gordon Podcast, I'm joined by Jim Murphy, author of Inner Excellence, for a powerful conversation about purpose, perseverance, and what happens when quiet impact meets a viral moment. Jim's story is one of those overnight-success tales that actually took decades. After years of speaking, coaching, and writing for athletes and leaders behind the scenes, one unexpected moment on an NFL sideline, a book in the hands of A.J. Brown, and a few words from the broadcast team sent Jim's work into the spotlight. What happened next? His book went from ten copies sold in a week to nearly half a million. We talk about what it's like to go from overlooked to bestselling almost overnight, the deeper mission behind Inner Excellence, and how Jim stayed grounded through all the noise. Most of all, we dive into the why behind his work and the calling to help others live and lead with love, joy, and true inner power. If you've ever wondered whether doing the right work for the right reasons still matters, this episode will answer that with a resounding yes. This isn't just a story about a book. It's a reminder that impact happens when you stay faithful to the mission, even when no one's watching. Tune in and be inspired by Jim's journey and the truth that the best is yet to come. How to Lead When Everything Falls Apart What happens when the bottom drops out—when the game you've built your identity on slips away, when your performance defines your worth, and suddenly, it's all gone? My guest today, Jim Murphy, knows precisely what that feels like. As a former outfielder in the Chicago Cubs organization, Jim's identity—and his life—revolved around how he performed on the field. When he confronted his own fear of failure and the collapse of that dream, he didn't bail—he embarked on a journey that led him into sports psychology and ultimately to revolutionize how high performers train their heart under pressure. And in this episode, we go deep into what it takes to rebuild when your identity is shattered and discover excellence fused with peace. Jim and I talk about what it's like to go through failure that feels public, permanent, and personal. He shares what it took to confront the shame, rebuild from the ground up, and discover that leadership isn't about titles or trophies—it's about who you are when everything else is stripped away. His story is raw and real, but it's also filled with hope. We dive into the mindset shifts that kept him going when most people would've quit, and how he found a deeper purpose on the other side of loss. Jim doesn't sugarcoat the process—he's honest about the mistakes, the doubts, and the long road back. But through it all, he shows us that true greatness isn't found in the spotlight. It's forged in the shadows, in the moments when no one's watching, and you still choose to rise. If you've ever faced a setback that felt too heavy to carry, or wondered how to lead when you don't feel like you've got anything left to give, this conversation will remind you that failure isn't final. It's often the very soil where your greatest calling starts to grow. Key Takeaways: Why leadership is revealed in failure, not just success How to confront shame and rebuild your confidence after loss The mindset shifts that allow you to rise when life knocks you down Why titles and achievements will never define true leadership How to find your deeper purpose in the middle of setbacks This isn't just about bouncing back—it's about becoming someone stronger, wiser, and more impactful because of the storm. Lean in, and let Jim's story remind you what it means to lead when it matters most. — Max Out.
Jim Murphy is the author of "Inner Excellence," a book compelling enough that NFL players read it during playoff games. This conversation explores Jim's counterintuitive thesis that selflessness, not ego, is the foundation of fearless performance. We discuss his journey from mental breakdown to spiritual awakening, his five years of solitude in the desert, and why self-centeredness is our greatest obstacle to both peak performance and fulfillment. Along the way, Jim reveals my own attachment to outcomes and the transactional relationship I have with love. Jim's wisdom is hard-won. This conversation is powerful. Enjoy!
