Welcome back Elements. It's Kayla here with a special episode of Rising Elements featuring a rising teen, Malcolm Hubbard, also known as DJmpac. In this episode, I had the honor of interviewing a rising DJ who strives to continue the legacy for his family and future generations all while motivating the hearts, minds, and souls of Generation Z. While staying humble and being a supportive friend, listen to what Djmpac has to give to others just like him. Don't forget to follow and support the rising teen on Instagram at @iamdjmpac. Rise on Elements! *I made a mistake in the interview where I said the incorrect Instagram Username, the correct Instagram Username is @iamdjmpac. I met an interesting person today. I didn't ask him about sharing our conversation publicly, so I'll use a fake name. I'll use my first name, Joe. Joe's running his own IT business. It's a small business, and it's growing. We only spent 30 minutes talking. I wondered what I could share that might be useful. Joe did make an interesting comment about consulting or business-help firms out there. He said the focus was always on more clients; how to sell to more people. He doesn't need to sell more. He's got the business. What he wants is to be a better run business himself. He's right. I can think of a couple of consultants, and they are more focused on getting more business, making more money – not so much the mechanics of running a small enterprise. I have heard of EOS, Entrepreneur Operating System. I don't have any first-hand knowledge, but it was recommended highly from someone I trust. The first thing I recommend surprises me. Joe has to say no. Say no to nearly everything. If the dog hunts, keep it. You can waste so much time chasing the next new technology idea or system. He doesn't have time or the energy. How is Joe going to balance operating with exploring? I'm a big believer in exploring new ideas. This is where salespeople might be able to help. Joe will need to put boundaries on this also, but he can expect a good sales team to help him stay informed of good ideas. I highly recommend Checklist Manifesto by Atul Gawande. Dr. Gawande is a surgeon in pursuit of perfection, not for his ego but to save lives. The book explores the use of checklists. I couldn't recommend it highly enough. I think it's important for Joe to know where his business fits, and I believe he does already. I'd share a diagram to help drive the point home. Think of a square with narrow to broad on one side, and low price to high price on the other side of the square. Where do you fit? Are you low price to a broad market like Southwest? Are you high price to a narrow market like a specialized law firm? Joe has found a niche with small medical offices, and he's not charging much compared to competition in town, so I'd say he's narrow focused and low price. There isn't a right or wrong answer. The key is to realize you can't jump the boundaries. Southwest can't figure out how to be high priced to a narrow market, neither can McDonalds. Remember Budweiser's attempt to have a high-priced beer? Or other airlines trying to copy Southwest? Didn't work. Never does, so Joe has to keep to his home court – narrow focus and low priced. Dance with the one you came with. Keep life simple. This is an extension of saying no. Stick to the few services that you do well. Find new clients if you need to grow. If you add services, you can lose your focus. I'm not saying 100% no. I'm just saying be careful. Go very, very slow on adding new services. Joe has to control expenses. If his expenses grow, he'll have a very hard time being low priced and still making a profit. Also fits with saying no. The last thing I say is Joe needs vision for his clients. Where is he taking them? They are all starting at different points on a scale of technology maturity, and what is Joe's vision of maturity. I think he has an idea, but it isn't written down yet. We both agreed it starts with backing up and security, and were does it go from there? If Joe has a vision, then he can sell the outcomes to the clients. He can say this is what life will be like when you come with me. I'm glad I met Joe today, and I'll recommend his service to any small medical office I know. It was a good day. Hello, my name is Travis Myers and welcome to the Hometown Hollywood podcast where you can find advice, inspiration, and Strategies for Success from talented people that are making a name for themselves inside the film industry, but outside the major film cities. Like I already said, my name is Travis Myers, and this is the first episode of the podcast. I'm an aspiring DP, I've shot a couple of short films that are currently in the festival circuit, and by day I make local commercials at an ad agency for a living. I am the first to say that I am not the best host. I don't like my own voice. I've obviously got some breathing problem that I have to edit out to make me sound even competent but I'm very passionate about the subject and I hope that some of that comes through in the interviews that we do. I tell bad jokes and I'm easily amused by those bad jokes. So be on the lookout for that. And I'll probably just have way too much fun with the editing of the audio as well. So a purpose of the show, is for a long time, I thought you had to move to LA to make it in the film industry and the more time that I spent online, I realized that some of these people that are doing great work, live in places other than LA or New York or Atlanta, or wherever big films are made. And some people are doing it in, let's say, Beaumont, Texas, which is where I am based out of and it's pretty much the middle of nowhere, but there's a growing community of film people. And then I heard on other podcasts that people were doing it out of Provo, Utah or Abbyville, Louisiana. This isn't a show to shame people who have moved to LA. Because if that is what's right for you, that's what's right for you. This is more of a show to inspire people wherever they are, if they have a camera and they're willing to work, you can create your own hometown Hollywood, and I'm excited for what the podcast will bring and I hope that you will enjoy it as well. Feel free to like, share, do whatever leave a comment telling me how I can do better. It's gonna be a journey for me and hopefully, it will inspire journeys for others. In this episode, I catch up and sit down and have a good chin wag with former Dundee based decorator Craig Spokes. Now Craig has an interesting stork where one man and his roller pole took the leap and skills emigrated down under. Now as what Craig describes himself as a Scossie he gives us an insight into working in Australia, from the hoops you have to jump through to get a visa down to the building boom and well-paid insurance work. Craig lives in the Aussie bush in far Western Sydney with his own “Shelia” and doesn't seem to be planning to return. I must admit I'm a tad envious (mainly of the lifestyle) and wish I'd had the balls to do it years ago.So go give Craig a follow on the links below and see how he's doing. You know the drill by now, get a brew, pin back you're ears, and dive in! Julie Weir and Digby Pearson, who have have helped launch the careers of many legionary heavy rock bands, discuss how they started their record labels, how they find new talent, the changes they have seen in the industry and the way they see it moving forward. They have supported, nurtured and empowered this crucial part of the music industry for decades and share the details of their experience. Click to listen to a Spotify playlist with the music discussed in this conversation. Please take our survey and let us know what you think, any and all feedback is very appreciated. Julie Weir is label head at Music For Nations which is a rock and metal label. Launched as an independent in 1983, Music For Nations established itself, early on, as a European leader in the rock and metal world. It now operates under the Sony Music umbrella. For two decades prior to this she ran her own independent rock labels (Cacophonous and Visible Noise) where she was responsible for breaking bands such as Bullet for my Valentine and Bring me the Horizon. She has run an independent publishing company, worked across events, sync and branding deals and even dabbled in artist management. She has consulted for and advised major labels on emerging talent.Digby Pearson is a British Indie record label owner born and raised in Nottingham, England. Having dropped out of university to throw himself into the grassroots music scene, as promotor, fanzine writer but first and foremost as a fan, a label seemed a next step. Despite having zero experience of business or any finances, founded Earache from his flat, a DIY shoestring operation which was on a mission to release records by the most extreme bands around, signing Napalm Death, Cathedral, Godflesh, Entombed, Morbid Angel, Bolt Thrower, Carcass. For 3 decades Digby has navigated all the twists and turns of the evolving music business landscape, anticipating the digital music revolution by signing Apple’s first Indie label deal. In recent years new young bands from the blues-rock scene became Digby’s sole focus, bands like Rival Sons, Blackberry Smoke, The Temperance Movement, Massive Wagons, all seemingly from nowhere gained the label more than a dozen Top 20 UK chart entries. Since 2017 Digby has diversified again, in addition to still being hands-on running the label, now 700+ releases deep, he also runs and curates the first ever heavy/punk/metal stages at Glastonbury and Boomtown festivals. The background music players on this episode are Joe Schirl on bass guitar and Peter Mayerhofer on hand pan. Instead of reviewing the 2015 Jason Schwartzman mumblecore vehicle 7 Chinese Brothers we instead go through that actor's filmography wherein I discover I've seen 13 of his films and have NOT seen 13 of his films. BUT, much more importantly, we discover the non existent film 'Mare Bonky' (2000) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jason_Schwartzman#Film which is listed there but doesn't have a Wiki or ANY INFO via IMDB or Google Search. A true mystery, that I now put to you good listener, cuz I frankly don't have the time.... myspacethepodcast@gmail.com is the handle if you have any clue as to what 'Mare Bonky' is.
