Digby Scott shares his transformative journey from living on "autopilot" to fully embracing a life of conscious choice. Digby takes us back to a massive epiphany he experienced at age 22 while sitting outside the Colosseum in Rome. It was there he realised he wasn't bound to the linear, traditional path of becoming a chartered accountant that had been laid out for him. Instead, empowered by a profound sense of freedom, he chose a life of adventure—traveling from Rome to Greece and then to the US, and even working the hardest job of his life as a commercial salmon fisherman in Canada. Digby also discusses how traveling solo to Ireland and writing in his journal helped him map out the core requirements for his professional life (working with people in a fast-paced environment where he could help others). This simple act of sense-making propelled him into a successful career in recruitment in London and New Zealand.

Sonia Purnell describes the 1939 marriage proposal between Randolph Churchill and Pamela Digby, who met for the first time at a London dinner. Pamela, a 19-year-old aristocrat from an isolated, cash-strapped Dorset estate, accepted the unromantic proposal as a strategic means of escaping her stifling rural life for the city's intellectual and political circles. Raised in a household that favored male heirs and discouraged formal female education, Pamela possessed a keen mind and an early awareness of her power over older, influential men. Her time in Munich in 1937 exposed her to Hitler and the terrifying rise of the Nazi party. Despite a failed debutante season in 1938 where she was dismissed as a "plump" oddball, Pamela's marriage provided the entree into high society she desperately craved. Her desire to escape her constrained upbringing led her to an impetuous marriage with Randolph Churchill, Winston Churchill's son, in September 1939. Despite warnings about Randolph's philandering and abusive nature, she saw the marriage as a doorway to an exciting lifestyle and a way to avoid returning to Dorset. During World War II, as her marriage to Randolph deteriorated, Pamela forged a close bond with Winston Churchill. She quickly became Churchill's secret weapon, joining his inner circle, "Padlock," and gathering crucial intelligence from influential Americans. Her most notable liaison was with Averell Harriman, the 49-year-old in charge of Lend-Lease, whom she successfully "enlisted to the British cause" and "bewitched" with her charm and strategic "mating dance". She also influenced figures like CBS star Ed Murrow, feeding him information to bolster British support in American broadcasts. Her wartime experiences, including giving birth during a Blitz air raid, deeply shaped her perspective. After the war, Pamela continued to cultivate influential relationships, including with Gianni Agnelli of Fiat, whom she helped gain acceptance in Washington. She later moved to America, marrying producer Leland Hayward in the late 1950s. While in the US, she was a close friend of President John F. Kennedy, whose assassination deeply affected her. Following Leland Hayward's death, which left her financially depleted, Pamela re-encountered and married Averell Harriman. This marriage marked her full immersion into American politics. She transformed their Washington D.C. home into a hub for Democrats, making Harriman feel like a king and advancing her own influence. She was an early advocate for women's political involvement, pushing beyond the traditional role of a political hostess to focus on policy and candidates. Pamela became a crucial mentor to Bill Clinton after his 1980 gubernatorial loss, restoring his self-belief and providing strategic guidance, including advice on television appearances. Her efforts were instrumental in shaping the Democratic party and contributing to its successes, including Clinton's 1992 presidential victory. As a reward, President Clinton appointed her Ambassador to Paris, a role she embraced despite her lack of formal diplomatic training. In this position, she played a decisive role in strengthening Franco-American relations and bringing a "moral compass" to the Bosnia crisis, drawing on her own wartime experiences to urge intervention. Sam takes in the Fox News discussion about the pope, which acknowledges that Jesus would be on the side of migrants if he was alive today, but also wonders whether he'd be as political as some of the leaders of the Catholic church have been. Then Sam and Digby marvel at JD Vance's ominous addendum to Donald Trump's tariffs agenda, mainly that American parents should be worried that if their children have to go off to fight in a war they should have American-made guns. They also discuss the Trump administration's cruel crack down on immigrants and their communities.
