3 EPs and several members later, Boston's Isis solidified their lineup while crafting their debut full-length album. During this period, the band found themselves balancing between their evolving identity and the influence of acts like Godflesh, The Melvins, and Neurosis. While many have cited their follow-up, Oceanic, as a career-defining moment, this debut features a raw heaviness interwoven with the atmosphere and themes that would ultimately shape future releases. Please join us as we discuss the origins of Isis and their debut album, Celestial! Nick & Tim helm a relatively new project called Disfigure. So far, they have just one tape release though they are working on more. Nick worked on many of the songs in relative isolation while living in New Hampshire and then recorded them with Tim once back in CT. We start as usual talking about what we're listening to. We recorded in October which lent itself to some opening talk about horror movies and bake off. We quickly veer into how the band started and what inspired it to happen; how they were inspired by Godflesh, d-beat and black metal to create their sound. Conversation continues down that path and veers off until we finally trail off talking about the first Redscroll release after becoming a store, Hostage Calm's Lens - a record Tim is on and a band Nick later joined and also a band that bares little other connection to this current project sound-wise other than the people who made it. Anyway! Battle metal madness! We are a record store that has a heavy emphasis on the left of center / underground music of the world. Whether it be underappreciated or just has a niche audience, marginalized or just off the radar it's all of interest to us. With the show we'll generally have a localized focus. We'll discuss upcoming releases and what is in our personal rotation at the moment. We'll talk about upcoming area musical activities. We'll talk to guests who have to do with all of the above. And we'll talk about specific dealings with the store. If you have input you're welcome to contact us through email (redscroll@gmail.com).

Our guest today is an artist drawn to the abstract, an artist with no love nor concern with the mainstream*, an artist happily dismantling expectations around music and sound and creating some of the most extraordinary and powerful bass music in the known universe.Kevin Martin's early recordings were abrasive industrial tracks that challenged the listener to stay the course. His work with Justin Broderick (formerly of Napalm Death and Godflesh) came out under the moniker of Techno Animal and still sound as abstract and dangerous today as they did 30 years ago. However Martins sound continually evolved taking influences from Hip-Hop, Reggae and Dub until his current incarnation of The Bug was born. The Bug released an incredible run of bass heavy tracks for Swamp 81, Ninja Tunes and Pressure Records. The Bugs 'London Zoo' album was heralded as a game changer in UK Bass music, bringing together some of the best MCs in the country such as Flowdan, Warrior Queen, Daddy Freddy, Tippa Irie and many more.Kevin also recorded with King Midas Sound, Fennez and released a number of incredible ambient albums under his own name including his current release 'Black' a tribute to Amy Winehouse. We are always looking out for people who totally commit to their music and that is why we are delighted to welcome Kevin Martin to the podcast. Before that it's all Hot-Dogs and Gong-Baths.*(May have some love and concern for the mainstream). Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

this episode is sponsored by Betterhelp.com/TheBarnIn 2024, HARVESTMAN, the brainchild of Neurosis' Steve Von Till, embarks on its most ambitious journey yet with the release of Triptych, a three-part album project set to coincide with three full moons throughout the year. With the first installment, Triptych: Part One, set to drop this Tuesday, April 23rd on the Pink Moon via Neurot Recordings, Steve was a recent guest on the Vulgar Display of Podcast in which he talks about the album and creative process.Triptych represents Von Till's exploration of a unique musical approach, weaving together diverse influences and musical elements into a cohesive tapestry that resonates with ancestral echoes. Recorded and mixed at The Crow's Nest in North Idaho, Von Till employs an array of instruments and techniques, including guitars, synths, percussion, and more, to craft each movement with meticulous care. Here are the visualizers for both "Psilosynth" and "Give Your Heart To The Hawk".Part One features guest contributions from luminaries such as Dave French of Yob, Al Cisneros of Sleep and OM fame, and John Goff of Cascadia Bagpiper. With masterful mastering by James Plotkin and striking artwork by Henry Hablak, Triptych: Part One is set to be released on various formats, including LP, CD, and digital platforms, with a special Bone White + Black Galaxy Effect vinyl variant packaged in a unique dub style jacket. At its core, Triptych is a testament to Von Till's deep engagement with the musical lineage that precedes him, offering a glimpse into the primordial forces that shape our collective consciousness. Drawing inspiration from ancient sites and folklore, Triptych is a sonic meditation on the enduring otherworldliness that resides within us all. Triptych invites us to transcend the constraints of time and immerse ourselves in a world where music becomes a portal to the sublime. With Triptych: Part One set to launch on April 23rd, HARVESTMAN invites us to join them on a voyage of sonic discovery, where the boundaries between reality and imagination blur, and where the echoes of the past reverberate into the future.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

It's one of our longest episodes ever, but we simply had to do it, as there's too much here to process, even with a 2-hour running time. A complicated departure from their work in Slipknot, Corey Taylor and Jim Root set out to have their own thing that doesn't sound all that different from Slipknot and we still aren't quite sure why it happened. But they do try to explain it, from Corey and Clown not talking to each other for seven months to "Bother" launching them into Gold status to what really boils down to Corey's ultimate desire to unmask and be a famous guy. Plus, we get a little "Guys" snapshot as we find 2002 Blabbermouth comments sections that still exist and Chad Kroeger of Nickelback absolutely bodies Corey Taylor. Oh, and the album ends with a slam poem. Like I said...there's a lot to process. If you want to process even more of our show, head on over to patreon.com/thepodkast, where $4/month gets you THREE bonus episodes every month, AND you immediately get access to our entire back catalog, which now totals over 130 episodes. Last month, Z from the Nu-Metal Agenda joined us to discuss Godflesh's "Pure", and it was wonderful. We also have an exclusive Discord, merch discounts, and if you want, you can hit a donor tier that allows you to tell us what to do for an episode. It's cool. Check it out.

After eight classic album with Ozzy Osbourne (ok, six plus “Technical Ecstasy” & “Never Say Die”) and two very strong releases with Ronnie James Dio, it was former Deep Purple singer Ian Gillian's turn to take the mic for Black Sabbath's eleventh studio album. Apart from the bands name, that release has little in common with their previous efforts. Mike and Dave discuss the good, bad and bizarre of those differences and why they should have probably named the band Black Purple for this release. Our final episode looks at the lasting impact of The Mermaid, and its effects on people's lives. What it meant to be an outsider, and the power to be gained from finding your people. To create this podcast, we interviewed people who were part of the Mermaid scene, including Justin Broadrick (Napalm Death, Godflesh, Final), Nicholas Bullen (Napalm Death), Stig C. Miller (Amebix), Steve Charlesworth (Heresy), Steve Watson (Cerebral Fix), Mark Freeth (Ausgang) and more musicians and fans who made the Mermaid a vital place for underground music. Music heritage is all about the stories we tell around these little scenes, shining a torch on underground histories that could otherwise be forgotten in a haze of scrumpy and mushrooms.Created by Home of Metal, presented by Sarah Lafford, produced by Alice Rosenthal. A rollicking hour of experimental music action on this week's Independent Music Podcast, where an intro of colourful, DIY, Japanese ambient-pop lulls you into a false sense of security as ferocious tracks from Guinea-Bissau, South Africa, and the inimitable Godflesh punctuate throughout. But there's subtlety amongst the power, with a roots-flavoured new one from Mungo's Hi Fi, a stunning track of the year contender from China's Yikii, and a beautiful solo record from Throwing Muses' Kristin Hersh. In this episode we hear about the iconic gigs at The Mermaid - it's seen by many as the birthplace of grindcore - and there was lots of other noise being made in this pub in Sparkhill too. Napalm Death were regulars on the stage, but, it seems, they weren't responsible for the loudest gig ever to be played on that corner of the Stratford Road... To create this podcast, we interviewed people who were part of the Mermaid scene, including Justin Broadrick (Napalm Death, Godflesh, Final), Nicholas Bullen (Napalm Death), Stig C. Home of Metal presents 'At The Mermaid'. The Mermaid was a large, dilapidated pub in Sparkhill, a working-class neighbourhood three miles south of Birmingham city centre. The laid-back landlords welcomed teenage punks, hippies and rockers to play weirdo music in the upstairs room, charging very little money for very bad cider. The Mermaid became a hub of DIY music scene in the 1980s, with £1 gigs, punk all-dayers, zine and tape swapping. It was also a site of political education for many, and hunt saboteurs gathered at the Mermaid before taking direct action. In creating this podcast, we interviewed people who were part of the Mermaid scene, featuring contributions from Justin Broadrick (Napalm Death, Godflesh, Final), Nicholas Bullen (Napalm Death), Stig C Miller (Amebix), Steve Charlesworth (Heresy), Steve Watson (Cerebral Fix), Mark Freeth (Ausgang) and more musicians and fans who made the Mermaid a vital place for underground music. This week we're discussing every album by GOD. Led by Kevin Richard Martin and Justin Broadrick (of Godflesh and Napalm Death), GOD is a tough band to describe and an even harder one to Google. Heavy, punishing, groovy, noisy, and more brutal than anything you've heard. Even John Zorn played with them on one album. They're really incredible, so please seek out their albums as best you can.Closing track: “Bloodstream” from The Anatomy of Addiction (1994)Spotify episode playlisthttps://open.spotify.com/user/motherpuncherincPatreonhttps://www.patreon.com/everyalbumeverMerchhttps://pandermonkey.creator-spring.com/Mike's EP:Pander Monkey on Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple,Instagram:Mike @pandermonkeyAlex @everyalbumalexHistory Tom's stuff:Debut album on Bandcamp, Spotify, AppleSubstackInstagramTwitterFacebookMike's Picks:The Anatomy of Addiction (1994) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteBreach Birth EP (1990) — Worst Record, Least FavoriteAlex's Picks:Possession (1992) — Best Album, Personal FavoriteBreach Birth EP (1990) — Worst Record, Least Favorite Albums we discussed this episode…Breach Birth EP (1990)Possession (1992)The Anatomy of Addiction (1994)
Right after Jarboe had migrated from the Deep South to New York in the early 80's, she saw Michael Gira and Swans perform and knew that was her destiny. Swans impact today is felt in bands like FACS, Godflesh, Neurosis, Isis and Napalm Death with Jarboe and Michael as the figure heads of Swans. Jarboe's career is 33 albums deep between solo work/collabs/Swans, and now is reissuing one of her most enduring and celebrated solo albums Sacrificial Cake (The Circle Group) from 1985 and is also heading out on tour to Europe for her first shows since the pandemic shutdown. She's an electrifying and eclectic singer, a practiced and studied performer and a passionate human with a long story that is still going strong.
Welcome to Trve. Cvlt. Pop! a brand new podcast about music from the mind of Stephen Hill and Sam Sleight. It's about all and any music, and that's reflected pretty well in our first episode where we look at the best in recent pop music by discussing new albums from Rina Sawayama, No Devotion, Lizzo, Blackpink, Demi Lovato and Noah Cyrus. Plus we discuss Ozzy Osbourne's first ever US Billboard number one album, tell you what songs have been stuck in our heads this week, with Sam obsessing over Italian progressive math metal weirdos Destrage and Steve unable to shake an underrated Nine Inch Nails banger from his mind, and end of a pretty gross chat about one of us happy and willing to suck the Norovirus from a member of Godflesh.
Today we are joined for the 1st time live in studio by Danny Walker!! drummer of so many bands we cant even start to list them. We talk about touring, his new music projects, and the Neurosis news that came out this weekend. Danny and I are some of the biggest Neurosis fans on earth and the stuff that has come out about Scott Kelly is disturbing, heart breaking and unforgivable but does that ruin the band? check out all things Danny Walker @ https://dannywalkerdrummer.com/ facebook – https://www.facebook.com/pages/Danny-Walker-drummer/149183488436903?fref=ts twitter – https://twitter.com/dwalkerdrummer youtube channel – http://www.youtube.com/dwalkerdrummer https://avitus.bandcamp.com/ We talked about a lot of bands on the pod some of which you may or may-not know.
