Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! Despite winning the battle, the big loser of this chapter is Tywin Lannister. His money, power, and more “civilized” brand of evil undercut his wins and guarantee his family's losses. Our discussion catalogues these failures and the seeds of mistrust that have broken the house that should easily dominate the Seven Kingdoms. In the chaos of battle, last week's Dothraki horrors are quietly displaced from Tyrion's mountain men into his innermost circle. Game of Thrones continues to impress us with its plot twists. Stories from behind the scenes of your favorite TV show can be just as interesting as the main plotlines. The Dothraki language has a vocabulary of over 3,000 words and continues to grow. The language was created by David Joshua Peterson for the TV series. The recipe for pigeon pie was not created by George R. R. Martin: he borrowed it from the 16th-century author Giovanni de' Rosselli. Game of Thrones hit all the possible ratings and became the most pirated TV series of all time. In one episode, one of the spikes at the Red Keep displays the prosthetic head of a former President George Bush. The directors of the show sell replicas of the actual Iron Throne for $30,000 (height: 7′ 2″; weight: 350 pounds). A replica of Gandalf's sword from The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is forged inside the Iron Throne. Sansa's clothing has sent very deliberate messages to her allies and her enemies on multiple occasions. Her wedding dress tells us her life story: a trout and a wolf on the belt mean that she was born in House Stark and House Tully. TIMESTAMPS You can learn the Dothraki language. 1:00 Serve your own pigeon pie. 1:38 Game of Thrones is becoming a Harvard class. 2:15 It's the most pirated show. 2:41 Mother of slugs. 3:13 No audition for Tyrion. 3:44 George Bush's head on a spike. 4:16 A mixtape dedicated to Game of Thrones. 4:48 HBO sells the Iron Throne. 5:08 Gandalf's sword is in the Iron Throne.5:33 70 ways to say "Hodor." 5:59 Madonna goes full Khaleesi. 6:26 A message in Sansa's dress. 6:49 Maester Aemon's actor is also blind. 7:33 Myrcella and Tommen date in real life. 8:00 Jon Snow and Arya Stark's original romance plot. 8:16 4 characters for 1 actor. 8:49 Catelyn Stark is the mother of Hermione Granger. 9:10 Viserys is related to Dickens. 9:38 Theon is Lily Allen's brother. 9:53 The Walk of Shame was real. 10:23 Young George R. A lot of films and TV shows like Game of Thrones, Dune, and Shadow and Bone have their own languages, and some are so complex that they have lore and history. But have you ever wondered how languages like Dothraki are created, or if the actors are just making it up as they go along? We take our questions to married couple Jessie and David Peterson whose shared love of linguistics and making up languages has led to them working for some very famous shows. They talk us through how they come up with languages. And the BBC's resident gamer, Mel Ramsey, takes us on a journey into gaming and the role that languages like Skyrim's Dovahzul play in bringing games to life for fans.Instagram: @bbcwhatintheworld Email: whatintheworld@bbc.co.uk WhatsApp: +44 0330 12 33 22 6 Presenter: Alex Rhodes Producers: Emily Horler, Benita Barden, Adam Chowdhury and Shiler Mahmoudi Editor: Rosanna La-Falce

Back in 2018, I interviewed language creator David J. Peterson about how he invented Dothraki for Game of Thrones and other fictional languages in fantasy worlds. David and his wife Jessie just finished a huge project – developing the Fremen language for Dune: Part Two. I talk with the couple about their creative process and the challenge of imagining simple English phrases in the Chakobsa language that Frank Herbert imagined in his Dune novels. We also hear my 2018 episode, “Do You Speak Conlang?” where I also talked with Marc Okrand, inventor of the Klingon language, and Robyn Stewart, a language consultant for Star Trek: Discovery. Plus, Jen Usellis -- a.k.a. Klingon Pop Warrior -- will give you a serious case of earworms (not the kind from Wrath of Khan.) For more episodes about Dune, check out my 2017 episode The Book of Dune, where I talked with Muslim fans of the series about the way Frank Herbert incorporated aspects of Islam into the books. And in 2021, I did an episode called The Ecology of Dune where I looked at the environmental messages in the books and whether Frank Herbert's environmental sensibilities still hold up today. This week on "We Don't Wanna Podcast," join Zach and Scott as they dive deep into the darkness and drama of "Game of Thrones" Season 8, Episode 3 - "The Long Night." While this episode has polarized fans, our dipshit duo finds themselves mostly in favor, lauding its unique blend of non-stop action and poignant character moments. Prepare for a journey through an episode where the pacing is as sharp as Valyrian steel. It's rare to see a show pull off an hour-long battle that doesn't overstay its welcome, but "The Long Night" does just that. It masterfully slows down for reflective moments, then surges forward with adrenaline-pumping action, all while weaving individual storylines into a tapestry of epic storytelling. Highlights? Oh, we've got them! From the hauntingly beautiful scene of the Dothraki charging into the abyss, to the dragons clashing in a breathtaking aerial battle, this episode is a visual feast. And let's not forget the heart-stopping tension as Jon Snow races against time, culminating in Arya's legendary takedown of the Night King. Zach and Scott are here to break it all down: the strategy, the spectacle, and the suspense. Tune in for their insightful and humor-filled take on one of "Game of Thrones'" most ambitious episodes.

Prepare for a fiery episode on We Don't Wanna Podcast as we delve into the monumental Game of Thrones Season 7 Episode 4, "The Spoils of War." Join hosts Zach and Scott as they marvel at the epic production feat that brings Daenerys, her Dothraki horde, and Drogon to the battlefield against the Lannister army. The visuals are nothing short of spectacular, making this a standout moment in the series. However, as Zach and Scott explore the episode, they express their reservations about some questionable character decisions. They delve into Jamie's bold challenge against Daenerys and Drogon, as well as Daenerys' controversial choice to burn the Tarlys alive. While the production impresses, the hosts share a shared thought that Season 7, including this episode, leans more heavily on dazzling visuals than thoughtful writing and storytelling. The first time you heard “Star Trek” characters speak Klingon, or the “Game of Thrones” characters speaking Dothraki and High Valyrian, you might have assumed that the actors were just speaking a few words of gibberish, created by some screenwriter to sound authentic. But these are complete languages, with vocabulary, syntax, grammar, and even made-up histories. There's only one person on the planet whose full-time job is creating them—and these days, he's swamped with requests. No doubt about it: Conlangs (constructed languages) are the new special effect. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys lays her eyes upon the Unsullied slave army with mixed emotion. She then takes her frustrations of the day out on Ser Jorah. She confronts Irri about a late-night tryst between the two women. Finally, she asks Jorah if buying the slave army is more of a Rhaegar or Viserys move. Simon and Mackelly hug their dogs.Chapter Review:Daenerys Targaryen has made it to Astapor in Slaver's Bay. She meets with slave master Kraznys mo Nakloz to see his Unsullied eunuch slave soldiers. Dany and Arstan Whitebeard are aghast at the terrible training process the Unsullied must endure. She decides to think on whether she wants to purchase the slaves to create an army for herself. On her way back to the ships, Dany thinks of Jorah's kiss and how inappropriate it was. However, as much as she found it unwanted, the kiss has stirred something within her she thought died with Drogo. When she and Arstan arrive at the ships, she lashes out at Jorah, punctuating her feelings with a slap across his face.Later that evening, she confides to Jorah that the act of buying a slave army doesn't feel in-line with what her brother Rhaegar would've done. Rhaegar had free men fighting for him. Jorah confirms that Rhaegar did have free, noble, and brave men. However, it all amounted to nothing, as Rhaegar lost the war and the Iron Throne. Whereas Dany needs to win.Characters/Places/Names/Events:Daenerys Targaryen - Last remaining descendent of the royal Targaryen line, Stormborn, Mother of Dragons, claimant to the Iron Throne of Westeros.Viserion, Rhaegal, and Drogon - Daenerys' dragons. It's Week 7 of the NFL and Dynasty Owner season and some big teams are on bye this week (Buffalo, Minnesota, Philadelphia and Los Angeles Rams). First up are the Listener's League standings, Week 6 game results and Week 7 game previews. We had an undefeated team (Black and Gold) in one of the LIsteners' Leagues, but no more as they lost to 126.3 to 112.34 to THE DOTHRAKI. Congrats to the team who's name is constantly changing on still being undefeated in the other Listeners' League. Their current name is The Curious Case of Eno Benjamin. Trade talk is next on the agenda as Steve (@SteveVT33) and Jay Pounds (@jaypoundsnfl) go over several recent Dynasty Owner trades, including one in a Listeners' League that has Jay pleading for someone to offer him the same deal. Next are their thoughts about Week 6 and the upcoming Week 7 games with the strong starts by the Jets and Giants overshadowing the same for the Vikings. With so many high scoring players on bye in Week 7, Steve thinks it's an opportunity for some new teams to make it into the Chase for the Ring Top 25. Finally, they close with their selections for Player of the Week, Bust of the Week, and all of the Week 7 games. Enjoying listening to what they have to say! What is Dynasty Owner? Ah, weddings in Westeros...never a dull moment (even if the Dothraki may disagree). In "We Light the Way," hearts were broken - along with skulls - and allegiances shifted in a fantastic conclusion to the first half of the season. On this week's episode of the Night's Cast, Vanessa and Petra discuss lovesick knights and the terrible decisions they make, secrets and the wedges they drive between friends, and Daemon Targaryen and how he keeps getting away with...well, everything.

Grab your stake and crucifix pendant, we're going vampire-hunting! Well, vampire-etymology-hunting. The podcast Buffering the Vampire Slayer, which recaps the TV show Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode by episode, invited me to answer their listeners' questions of language that the show had provoked. Together with BVTS hosts Kristin Russo and Jenny Owen Youngs, I tackle the etymology of coven, vampire/vampyre, wigging out, the name Buffy and Bovril; as well as google as a verb, conlang on TV, and why Latin is so often the language of spells and spookiness. With the vastly shortened season, we hit the midpoint a lot sooner than I thought, and boy is it a doozy. Building off the monumental events of last weeks episode, "The Spoils of War" is an interesting case, because its the next in a line of steps that Benioff & Weiss were taking to further the pacing of the show than they ever had before, with the next stage in the war for Westeros occuring when Daenerys hears of the fall of Highgarden, which leads her riding Drogon to overpower Jaime Lannister's forces with a Dothraki horde, as a show of what she is truly capable of if she were to focus all her power on taking Westeros. It's an interesting perspective they take, presenting Daenerys on the offensive front and keeping the battle focused from Jaime's perspective, showing what perceived power versus real power really looks like. The Starks are also officially reunited with Arya returning to Winterfell, reuniting with Sansa & Bran, sparring with Brienne and causing Littlefinger more anguish. Jon also attempts to further convince Daenerys of the threat from the North, but to no avail, and is unexpectedly reunited with Theon. But eventually has to be rescued from the clutches of the phantoms by Drogon, breathing fire like a real dragon. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys fails to convince any of the grandees of Qarth to fund her plans to invade Westeros. Factions vye for her favor, but all seem bent on ownership of her dragons. She decides that it's time to see the warlocks. Mackelly and Simon survey her options. Chapter Review: Daenerys Targaryen rides in Xaro Xhoan Daxos' palanquin having been rebuffed by the Pureborn of Qarth. Her bribes and supplications were for nothing. She was a novelty to them and no more. He reiterates his offer to marry her and provide all that she will ever need. Qarth custom is that married couples maintain their own property, so she would not have to share her dragons. However, Dany thinks he's more interested in the young male servants that populate his house. They stop to watch a firemage perform amazing tricks, and Dany is approached by Quaithe. The shadowbinder explains that the firemage's powers have skyrocketed since Dany arrived. The dragons amplify magic. Quaithe again warns Dany that nobody is to be trusted, that all want her dragons for themselves, and that she should go east to Asshai to find the truth. Later, Ser Jorah tells Dany the one fact that Xaro is concealing. On their wedding day, each can ask the other for a gift that cannot be denied. One of her dragons would surely be forfeit. They conclude that they're not getting anywhere, but Dany cannot understand why the comet led them to Qarth if not to provide them with soldiers and ships. They decide their next, and last, stop in Qarth will be with Pyat Pree and the warlocks. Characters/Places/Names/Events: Daenerys Targaryen - Daughter of King Aerys. Widow of Khal Drogo. The Ghosts of Harrenhal: A Song of Ice and Fire Podcast (ASOIAF)
Daenerys and her khalasar arrive at Qarth. Various factions vie for her favor. Ser Jorah brings news from Westeros that King Robert is dead, his son Joffrey sits the throne, and the usurper's allies the Starks and Lannisters are at war. Dany is thrilled but Jorah cautions that nothing has really changed. Simon and Mackelly rehash the old news. Chapter Review: Daenerys Targaryen and her crew enter Qarth. It is awash with colors and life, everything that Vaes Tolorro was not. Dany displays her dragons as she is paraded through the city led by Pyat Pree and Xaro Xhoan Daxos. The citizens are naturally amazed. The two men make bids for her affection by undermining the other, Dany ultimately choosing Daxos' offer of a whole wing of his giant manse. The masked woman Quaithe warns Dany to beware all of them. Jorah concurs. While Dany gets a bath, her men visit the rest of the city - she wants to know about the parts that her parade route did not enter. Ser Jorah is sent to the docks to find any news from Westeros. While she bathes, she tries to come up with a plausible route for her back to the Iron Throne. Her enemies, Robert Baratheon, Eddard Stark, Tywin Lannister and Jamie Lannister loom large in her imagination, and her vulnerable position is obvious to all. Jorah returns with Captain Quhuru Mo of the Summer Isles. He has reliable, although not detailed intelligence, that Robert Baratheon is dead. That Ned Stark has been labeled a traitor and that Westeros is at war with itself over the line of succession. She's delighted and promises the captain a handsome reward when he visits her in King's Landing and she sits the Iron Throne. Civilization rests upon the existence of language, says language creator David Peterson. In a talk that's equal parts passionate and hilarious, he shows how studying, preserving and inventing new languages helps us understand our collective humanity -- and gives a quick lesson on High Valyrian, one of two languages he created for "Game of Thrones" (along with Dothraki). "Language is not merely a tool,” he says. “It is our legacy, it's our way of conveying what it means to be human." Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
