Introduction Hosts Bill and Pete Bush dive into a thought-provoking discussion about a pivotal moment in every financial journey where "the road diverges." This episode explores the crucial choice people face when determining their financial future—one path leading to confidence, success, and security, while the other leads to regret and missed opportunities. Bill and Pete share insights on why some struggle to choose the more secure path and how to build momentum toward financial confidence.   Episode Highlights ·         [00:22] The Diverging Path Bill and Pete explore the concept that, at some point in every financial journey, “the road diverges,” presenting two potential paths. One path leads to confidence, success, and financial security, while the other can result in regret, doubt, and missed opportunities. They reflect on how people often face this crossroads, and while most would choose the path toward security and fulfillment, various obstacles keep them from progressing. The hosts suggest that identifying these roadblocks and addressing them head-on is key to staying on the path toward financial well-being. ·          [02:31] Taking the First Step Tackling financial goals can feel daunting, but Bill and Pete emphasize the importance of taking that first small step. They use the analogy of "eating an elephant one bite at a time" to illustrate how consistent, small actions over time create lasting results. They mention that inertia is a common issue; taking that initial step is often the hardest part, but once in motion, people tend to continue on the path. Pete highlights the incremental nature of retirement accounts like 401(k)s, where small, regular contributions accumulate into significant assets over time. ·         [04:52] Future Self Visualization Bill and Pete dive into the psychology behind why people struggle to save for their future selves. Citing Dr. Hal Hershfield's research on future self-visualization, they explain that many people see their future selves as strangers, making it harder to feel a connection and prioritize future financial needs. Pete shares his experience hearing Hershfield speak and recommends watching Hershfield's TED Talk. By better visualizing their future selves, people can build empathy for their future needs, leading to more proactive financial planning. ·          [07:16] The Do-It-Yourself Mentality vs. Seeking Guidance While self-management of finances may seem appealing, Bill and Pete discuss the pitfalls of a purely DIY approach. They share how the guidance of a financial advisor can help overcome cognitive and emotional barriers to financial success. Using examples like gym coaching, they highlight that just as fitness requires discipline and consistency, managing finances requires behavioral coaching to stay on track. Advisors provide accountability, expertise, and reassurance, especially during volatile market periods, ensuring that clients maintain a long-term view. ·          [14:30] Too Much Plane for One Person to Fly Drawing from The Checklist Manifesto, Bill recounts the story of an early Boeing aircraft, too complex for one pilot to operate alone. This story serves as an analogy for complex financial lives that become too intricate for individuals to manage without assistance. Bill and Pete observe that, as people progress through life, they accumulate assets and liabilities, making their financial plans increasingly intricate. This is where financial advisors bring value—helping clients coordinate the many moving parts of their finances to ensure stability and direction, ·          [16:56] Resource Highlight: 50 Ways an Advisor Can Help You Bill and Pete introduce their latest resource, a downloadable PDF titled 50 Ways Financial Advisors Can Help You. This guide outlines both common and unexpected ways an advisor can add value, from tax-efficient strategies and risk management to behavioral coaching and legacy planning. They focus on six key areas: Behavioral Coaching – Helping clients avoid impulsive financial decisions, particularly in turbulent markets. Investment Management – Ensuring proper asset allocation, rebalancing, and managing portfolios to align with financial goals. Tax Strategies – Providing tax-efficient approaches to minimize liabilities and increase savings. Risk Management – Addressing potential financial risks through planning and insurance, securing clients' financial foundation. Legacy Planning – Facilitating discussions about asset distribution, including wills, trusts, and the timing of inheritance.     Sound Bites ·         "The road does separate, one path leads to confidence." ·         "Successful people do things that others won't do." ·         "Take that one first step, whatever that is for you."   Conclusion If the conversation resonates and you're considering moving away from the "do-it-yourself" model to seeking professional guidance, Bill and Pete invite you to reach out. With resources at RunwayDecade.com and Horizon FG's website, they offer various ways to connect, either in person or virtually, for anyone ready to take that first step.   Resources Mentioned 50 Ways Financial Advisors Can Help You (Downloadable PDF) This link provides an in-depth look at the variety of ways advisors can add value, from practical strategies to behavioral insights, helping clients achieve their financial goals. When you mentor: You share your experience & subject-matter expertise. You help a colleague see the world & its potential—through your eyes. When you coach: You help your colleague make sense of their world—from their perspective. Effective leaders: seek diverse perspectives recognize the bias of individual opinion make decisions methodically Ineffective leaders: make reflexive decisions amplify the thoughts of a few see alternate perspectives as obstacles Hiring -- What are the must-haves for a leadership role? We are strange creatures. It is hard for us to speak about, or let in, the reality of frailty and death — the elemental fact of mortality itself. In this century, western medicine has gradually moved away from its understanding of death as a failure — where care stops with a terminal diagnosis. Hospice has moved, from something rare to something expected. And yet advances in technology have made it ever harder for physicians and patients to make a call to stop fighting death — often at the expense of the quality of this last time of life. Meanwhile, there is a new longevity industry which resists the very notion of decline, much less finitude. Fascinatingly, the simple question which transformed the surgeon Atul Gawande's life and practice of medicine is this: What does a good day look like? As he has come to see, standing reverently before our mortality is an exercise in more intricately inhabiting why we want to be alive. This conversation evokes both grief and hope, sadness at so many deaths — including our species-level losses to Covid — that have not allowed for this measure of care. Yet it also includes very actionable encouragement towards the agency that is there to claim in our mortal odysseys ahead.Atul Gawande's writing for The New Yorker and his books have been read by millions, most famously Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End. He currently serves as Assistant Administrator for Global Health at the U.S. Agency for International Development. He previously practiced general and endocrine surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and was a professor at both Harvard Medical School and the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.Find the transcript for this show at onbeing.org.This show originally aired in October 2017.______Sign up for The Pause — a Saturday morning companion newsletter to the On Being podcast season, and our mailing list for news and invitations all year round. He explains how these simple tools can enhance the performance of experts and foster closer teamwork. By breaking down complex tasks into manageable steps, checklists ensure that crucial details are not overlooked, thus improving efficiency and outcomes. Clip: The value of checklists (3m26)IMPORTANCE AND DIFFICULTY OF CHECKLISTS Atul discusses the initial resistance to adopting checklists and systems. He highlights how checklists shift from our usual values of autonomy and individual expertise to a more collaborative and systematic approach. This transition can be challenging but ultimately leads to better results. Clip: Resistance to checklists (1m55)In a compelling story, Atul recounts how medical teams operate like a pit crew, following a step-by-step checklist to save a life. This illustrates the power of checklists in high-stakes situations, demonstrating how structured teamwork can lead to miraculous outcomes. Clip: The Frozen Girl (4m02)SET GOALS Brian from Optimize shares an anecdote from Atul about the rock band Van Halen and their use of checklists. The band famously included a clause about brown M&Ms in their contract to ensure venues paid attention to the details. This story underscores how daily checklists can drive excellence and prevent oversights, even in unexpected ways. Clip: Brown M&Ms (2m55)OUTRO Atul emphasizes the need for a new way of thinking to improve ourselves. He stresses the importance of accepting our fallibility and using checklists to mitigate errors and enhance performance. This practice of keeping in touch has carried over into their married life as well. In a conversation at the kitchen sink, having put their two young sons to bed, Lori asked why there wasn't a program to help new parents navigate their personal and professional lives. After Jason asked her what she could do to solve the problem, she began in earnest what would become Mindful Returns, a program which guides new parents transition back to work after parental leave.    The two touch base each Saturday night by consolidating what they call the “daily detritus” into one basket in order to tackle the duties of parenthood together. This idea was inspired by Atul Gawande's “Checklist Manifesto. The two have also been inspired by Eve Rodsky's book “Fair Play,” and they discuss the importance of a balanced division of labor in a household.   Lori and Jason's support for one another is obvious. Join today's discussion to hear their advice on how to write a book or make a speech in public and find out how Jason earned the name The TicTac Guy!   Quotes   “The foundation of Relationships to Infinity is the social science behind networks, and how we think about our approach to connection and reconnection. Lori was just talking about the fact that we both are ‘keeper-in-touchers.' There's actually a lot of social science behind that.” (8:44 | Jason) “I said to my dear husband, ‘There should be a program out there, a class I can take about how to transition into working parenthood. I can take a class on how to massage my baby, puree baby food, make a birth plan. I can't take a class on how to navigate the personal and professional identity crisis I'm having as I become a working parent. And Jason said, ‘Well, what are you going to do about it?' And thus, the program that I created, Mindful Return, was born.” (10:53 | Lori) “Too often when we think about building something entrepreneurial, it has to be in the garage, venture funded, all these things. But what if you take little bite sized pieces with mind numbing detail on a weekly basis and you build something?” (14:26 | Jason)  “There are so many dual career working couples these days, that this is an issue and it spills into the workplace too. Because if you have if you're doing 90% of the mental work of your household, you're just not able to focus on your job as much as someone who is doing 10% of the mental work of a household.” (21:52 | Lori)  “Parenthood made me so much of a better public speaker, because before we had kids, I would stew about the slides. And I would sit there and analyze them, and I'd memorize my script. And then we had kids, and I said, ‘I don't have time for any of that. And I just showed up as who I was, and I was much more spontaneous, and I hadn't over prepared anything, and people liked that better.” (33:14 | Lori) Links The Checklist Manifesto - Atul Gawal https://a.co/d/hppObRx Fair Play: A Game-Changing Solution for When You Have Too Much to Do By Eve Rodsky https://a.co/d/6ZoaX2O Parents at Work Podcast https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/parents-at-work/id1239258343   Connect with  Lori Mihalich-Levin: LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/lorimihalichlevin/ Mindful Return https://www.mindfulreturn.com/ Lori's book - Back to Work After Baby - https://www.mindfulreturn.com/back-work-after-baby-book/   Connect with Jason Levin: READY, SET, LAUNCH readysetlaunch.net LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jasonlevinspeakertrainercoach/ Jason's book - Relationships to Infinity   Connect with Chris Batz: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/chrisbatz/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/theliongroupkc  Instagram: @theliongroupllc Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

Dan raises the question: if you only had to implement one simple framework to improve your business, what would it be? In other words, what's your minimum effective dose of operational practices? Sometimes–most of the time–one simple change can make a huge difference. Today's guest represents this line of thinking to a T. Lydia Machova talks about the ROI of spending a month implementing one simple idea, developing an integrator/visionary relationship, and the minimum effective dose of operational practices that improved her business. Lastly, Dan & Lydia talk about how founders often confuse assistance with delegation and how Lydia built an operating system that empowers her team to take ownership, solve problems, and send fewer Slack messages. Wes Davis joins us to provide some definitions, insights, and perspectives on HVAC Codes and Standards from his role as Director of Technical Services at ACCA - The AirConditioning Contractors of America. We dig into details of the ANSI/RESNET/ACCA Standard 310, The Standard for Grading the Installation of HVAC Systems, published in June 2020.  The 310 standard was written mainly to help builders earn RESNET HERS credit for installing AND commissioning residential HVAC systems.  RESNET HERS scores are given to new construction homes for a host of benefits described here:  https://www.hersindex.com/know-your-homes-hers-index-score/hers-index-understanding-the-hers-score/ Yet, the 310 standard, like the other ACCA standards, manuals, and publications (see links below), allows any technician or contractor to quickly assimilate industry and institutional knowledge from all the stakeholders that built, reviewed, and commented on the publications. This is a terrific way to build a better business. We also touch on the vast array of other member benefits avail at ACCA, like MIX groups, advocacy, forums, and technical support. Atul Gawande's "The Checklist Manifesto: How To Get Things Right" is a book that explores the power of checklists and how they can improve the performance of individuals and organizations in a variety of contexts. Some of the key themes of the book include: The fallibility of human memory: Gawande argues that humans are fallible and prone to forgetfulness, especially when dealing with complex tasks. Checklists can help ensure that critical steps are not missed. The value of simplicity: Checklists must be simple, concise, and easy to use. Complex checklists can be overwhelming and lead to errors. The importance of communication: Checklists can improve communication between team members, especially in high-pressure situations with a risk of miscommunication. The need for flexibility: Checklists should be adaptable to different contexts and situations and constantly updated and refined based on feedback. The potential for checklists to improve performance in various fields: Gawande provides examples of how lists have been successfully implemented in medicine, aviation, construction, and other industries. Overall, Gawande argues that checklists can be a powerful tool for improving performance and reducing errors in various contexts and that they should be an essential part of any organization's toolkit. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
