We interview the winners Brett Robinson and Charlotte Purdue from the UK, together with first Australian female Melissa Duncan. Jack Rayner and Jack Bruce also take time to chat to Down the Track while Australian distance running legend Liam Adams reflects on his race and also talks up what could be a resurgence in Australian men’s marathon running. Jackson Sharp and Sarah Schiffman talk to us about their good wins in the U20 trials and Abbey Caldwell discusses just how important it was to snare fourth position. Sean provides an overview of the Hunter and Canberra Track Classic results, including the 600m events at Hunter where the men were gunning for the Australia record. The VAL Gifts moved to Wangaratta and Maribyrnong over the long weekend and Tim reviews the performances. For AV’s regional clubs the Australia Day long weekend is the chance to get together at the Victorian Country Championships. Bendigo played host this year and the highlight performances including an incredible 10 gold medals to Eaglehawk AC’s David Chisholm are reviewed. In Episode 6 Sean & Tim preview the World Cross Country Selection trial taking place in Canberra over the long weekend. With two automatic qualifying spots on the line, the fields are looking strong across the Open and Junior categories as the trip to Denmark in March beckons. With lots of competition underway already in 2019, a full rundown of results from the Milers Club and High Velocity Club competitions are discussed including interviews Abbey de la Motte, Matthew Scott, Katrina Anderson, Abbey Caldwell, Jordan Gusman, Peter Bol and Stefan Music. The VAL season is well underway and selected results are provided for the Rye, Frankston and St Albans Gift. Bendigo hosted the Victorian Multi Event Championships and once again our Decathletes and Heptathletes were out in numbers across the two day competition. Dion Finocchiaro and Nick Earl tasted sweet success at the Cadbury’s Marathon and Half Marathon in Hobart , while the most prestigious trail race in Victoria saw Ash Watson smash the Two Bays 56km course record and nearly dip under the magical 4 hours mark. Down the Track interviews the 28km winners George Hedley and Simone Brick as they go to 2nd and 3rd respectively on the all time list for the event. In the hot Topic we interview Australian Walks legend Tim Erickson about the proposed changes in distance at Championship level for the road walks from 2021. The International Road Walks Committee are planning one thing, but listen to why Tim (and many others) think they are walking down the wrong path! How about curiosities as to what makes the Harvard Humanitarian Initiative tick and the amazing projects it undertakes to make the work a better, healthier, and safer place? Well then you will enjoy this laughter filled and inspirational episode with the remarkable Dr. Tim Erickson. Tim is a Core Faculty at the prestigious Harvard Humanitarian Initiative, with expertise in environmental toxicology and crisis in climate change. He also has active humanitarian health projects in conflict regions of Ukraine and Syria. He’s also an emergency medicine physician at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston where he serves as the Chief of Medical Toxicology in the Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Erickson is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians, American College of Medical Toxicology, American Academy of Clinical Toxicology, and the prestigious National Geographic Explorers Club. Previously, he served as the Director for the Center for Global Health and Professor of Emergency Medicine and Medical Toxicology at the University of Illinois at Chicago’s College of Medicine. Dr. Erickson has been a member of multiple editorial boards and has a prolific academic history including publishing over 120 original journal articles and book chapters as well as editing 4 major textbooks. He has presented over 100 national and international invited lectures related to emergency medicine, toxicology, humanitarian global health, and wilderness/expedition medicine. And he has extensive international experience in Africa (Rwanda, Sudan, and Kenya), Asia (India, Vietnam, and Nepal), South America (Brazil, Peru, and Argentina), Europe (Kosovo, Ukraine, France) and Antarctica. But he’s also lobbed a snake at my daughter (it’s OK, it was rubber). His office is filled with blowgun darts that may or may not still have qari on their tips, as well as skulls and a variety of spiders and snakes, which I believe are all dead, but with Tim, you never know. So be warned…. In this episode we travel around the world to humanitarian hot spots as well as Antarctic rescues in very cold spots. We discuss his Tox-Boy beginnings and his current work at Harvard, and a great deal in-between. Tim is the poster-boy for living a life in full—adventure, family, healing others, and training future and current physicians and healthcare providers—while have an amazing time doing it all.
