Send us Fan MailAlex Rutledge and Redbone welcome Kentucky Headhunters co-founder Richard Young straight from a tomato plant run in Glasgow, Kentucky. Richard delivers a masterclass in Southern storytelling — from brother Fred's midnight tractor rides and his collection of 50 antique machines with only 4 batteries, to the band's history-making leap from a Kentucky holler to Sweden Rock Festival (opening three slots before Queen) and sold-out UK arena runs alongside Blackstone Cherry. We also get into turkey hunting on the creek, a surprise bear sighting, and cousin Johnny's electric-bike stealth hunting strategy. After Richard heads off for tomato plants, Alex breaks down a monster spring turkey season — 29 gobblers called in across five states — plus a deep dive into Missouri's #2 national turkey harvest ranking. The show wraps with a full wild turkey recipe segment: BBQ breast with Cajun Injector, brine techniques, and Chick-fil-A-style turkey nuggets. The Kentucky Headhunters play Salem, Arkansas' Fulton County Homecoming (77 years strong) this Saturday night.Chapter Markers1:29 – Intro & Kentucky Headhunters Coming to Salem, AR1:55 – Richard Young Joins: Farm Life, Fred's Tractors & Garden Stories15:04 – Kentucky Headhunters Go International: Conquering Sweden Rock & the UK24:47 – Richard's Turkey Hunt, Bears on the Farm & Electric Bike Hunting29:46 – Wrapping Up with Richard Young30:57 – Life After the Spotlight: Alex & Redbone Reflect34:00 – Alex's Spring Turkey Season: 29 Gobblers in 5 StatesMissouri Hunting Heritage Federation:https://www.mhhf.us/To follow American Roots Outdoors Podcast:https://www.facebook.com/groups/448812356525413To learn more about American Roots Outdoors:https://americanrootsoutdoors.com/https://www.facebook.com/AmericanRootsOutdoors/To follow Alex Rutledge:https://www.facebook.com/americanrootsalex/To follow Wayne Lach:https://www.facebook.com/wayne.lach.5To follow Mike Crase:https://www.facebook.com/mike.crase

James sits down with Mike Roux, a turkey hunter in his 55th season, NRA American Hunter staff writer, and host of the Mid Mo Reapers YouTube channel. Mike grew up chasing Ozark gobblers in southeast Missouri and has spent more time watching turkeys with a camera and a notepad than most have with a gun. The conversation gets into how Mike reads the three phases of the spring, why he stopped calling to birds on the roost, and the case for forgetting the roost altogether and hunting the strut zone instead. He walks through his calling progression of hen to Jake and explains why the last legal hour of the last legal day is his favorite time to hunt a gobbler. In this episode of the Pennsylvania Woodsman, Mitchell is joined once again by Jake Stanisch of Long Branch Game Calls to break down the realities of moving from opening week into the second week of turkey season. With many hunters experiencing slow starts, changing weather, and increasing hunting pressure, this conversation centers around how to stay mentally sharp and avoid overthinking when things don't go as planned. Jake shares insights on when to stay the course versus when to adapt, emphasizing the importance of scouting, reading sign, and understanding what turkeys are actually doing—not just what we expect them to do. The discussion dives deep into calling strategies, realism, and how to separate yourself from other hunters in heavily pressured woods. From tree calling and mid-morning tactics to adjusting tone, cadence, and call selection, Jake explains how subtle differences can make a major impact. The episode also covers regrouping when birds go quiet, the value of getting tight on roosted turkeys, and how persistence often pays off later in the season. Whether you're hunting weekends or grinding out every morning, this episode offers practical tactics and a steady mindset to help you navigate one of the toughest stretches of the season. In this episode, we break down the idea that every gobbler has a short window—sometimes just 3 days—where he can be called, worked, and tagged. If you don't recognize it, you'll hunt right through it and never know he was beatable. We cover how to identify that window, what changes in a gobbler's behavior, and the mistakes that keep hunters from capitalizing on it. From henned-up birds to late-season shifts, this episode is about understanding when the odds finally swing in your favor—and being ready when they do. Topics discussed: The “3-day window” when a gobbler is killable How to recognize when a bird becomes vulnerable Common mistakes that cause hunters to miss their opportunity Calling strategies when gobblers are with hens Why calling to the gobbler isn't always the right move Late-season behavior and how it changes your approach Knowing when to stay, move, or back out The mindset shift that leads to more consistent success Got a question for the show? In this episode, William Lyon breaks down the subtle details that make the difference, including one overlooked sound that can completely change the outcome of a hunt. This is not surface-level advice. It's decades of experience, hard lessons, and real stories from the woods. If you've ever had a gobbler stall just out of range… this one matters. In this episode, we cover: Why gobblers hang up—and what they're actually doing The role of drumming and why it can pull birds in when calling won't When to call, when to stay quiet, and how to use curiosity against a gobbler How turkeys pinpoint your exact location (and how that affects your setup) The patience factor: why sitting longer kills more birds How to choose the right setup for stationary hunts Using terrain, shadows, and conditions to your advantage Wind, weather, and how they impact turkey movement and sound Roosting strategies and how to plan your next morning hunt Midday loafing areas and where birds go when they disappear Real-world stories (including one of the wildest doubles you'll ever hear) Lessons learned from decades of turkey hunting experience If you're serious about becoming a better turkey hunter, this episode will change how you think about calling—and when not to call. Henry Ott is a third-generation turkey hunter from South Alabama with over 60 years of experience in the woods. He learned from his father and grandfather—long before modern gear, when success depended on woodsmanship, patience, and understanding turkeys at a deeper level. Over decades of hunting the same country, Henry noticed something most hunters overlook: Gobblers aren't random. They run a route. And if you're not set up on it… you're already too late. In this episode, Henry breaks down how turkeys actually move, how hens dictate everything a gobbler does, and why positioning—not calling—is what consistently kills birds. This is old-school knowledge built from a lifetime of watching turkeys in big timber, long before today's tactics took over. If you've ever had a gobbler hang up, disappear, or just not do what he “should” do… this will change how you think about turkey hunting. In this episode: • Why gobblers follow a route instead of moving randomly • How hens control gobbler movement throughout the day • The biggest setup mistake most hunters make • Why chasing gobblers almost always backfires • How to get ahead of a gobbler instead of behind him • Lessons learned from 60+ years of turkey hunting Got a question for the show? In this special episode, Pitt County Chief District Court Judge Galen Braddy shares his deep-rooted passion for turkey hunting and turkey calling, and how the discipline, patience, and focus it requires mirror the skills he brings to the courtroom.Judge Braddy, who has served on the bench for over 25 years, offers listeners a behind-the-scenes look at his life outside the courtroom, and treats us to a demonstration of a variety of turkey calls. In addition, he shares how turkey hunting and calling trains him for his work in the courtroom, and allows him to recharge to do his best at the job he loves. “No matter what's going on, like if you've heard a terrible domestic case where a family is in conflict, you can reboot in the outdoors,” said Braddy on the podcast. “Sometimes it doesn't matter if the turkey gobbles or not, you're just out there. That really brings me back to peace and helps me get away.”All Things Judicial: Beyond the Bench is part of an ongoing effort to humanize the judiciary and foster public understanding of the people who serve in North Carolina's court system.See pictures of Judge Braddy's prize turkeys and the turkey calls he uses.

In this episode, we sit down with Scott Trulock, owner of Trulock Chokes and a true Southern outdoorsman, to talk about all things turkey hunting, shotguns, and the wild journey of learning to hunt when no one else in your family does it. Scott shares how he got hooked on turkey hunting after his time in the Marine Corps — with no mentors, no traditions, and no roadmap. We dive deep into how hunting in the Deep South has changed over the years, why today's turkey seasons feel so different, and how gear (especially chokes) has evolved to meet modern hunters' needs. Plus, Scott breaks down critical tips around choosing the right choke for your shotgun, why over-choking is a real problem, and how hunters can avoid some of the biggest mistakes that cost them birds. If you're struggling with tight-lipped late season gobblers, missed shots, or trying to figure out the best setup for your shotgun, this is the episode for you!
