In Episode 6 of the Coach Education is Broken series, I discuss the need for a significant shift in the way we think about and approach coach education by embracing the natural complexity that comes with people operating in a range of contexts. I represent the views of coach educators, system builders and coaches themselves that we need to move beyond linear development pathways, particularly if we want to engage those working in community settings with individuals that experience social and/or economic disadvantage. I would love to hear your thoughts about this and would be keen to help any organisations that are looking to tackle some of these challenges. 00:00 Introduction and Episode Overview01:57 Understanding the Linear Coach Development Journey04:43 Challenges in Recognizing Expertise in Youth Coaching09:52 The Need for Non-Linear Coach Development 12:03 Addressing Diversity and Inclusion in Coach Education16:21 Reforming Curriculum Design for Coaches19:34 Conclusion and Call to ActionBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.

In Episode 5 of the 'Coach Education is Broken' series,' I explore the importance of addressing systemic barriers in the sports workforce that mean that the worksforce continues to lack diversity. This episode delves into real-world examples of how local community engagement can drive participation, social impact, and talent development but how this can only happen by utilising the qualities, skills and attributes of coaches from within that local community. Through a compelling story of a martial arts club in a deprived area, I showcase the importance of localised, bottom-up approaches to coaching and education and the impact it can have on the lives of young people. 00:00 Introduction and Episode Overview00:23 Understanding Workforce Diversity01:55 The Importance of Local Community Coaches05:19 Challenges Faced by Unqualified Coaches11:27 Decentralising Education for Greater Impact14:44 Call to Action and ConclusionBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.

Tim Baghurst is a professor at Florida State University and Director of the FSU Coach programme.Coach Education and Qualifications -0:25Timothy Baghurst explains the purpose of the FSU Coach, an interdisciplinary center for athletic coaching, and its mission to support coaches and sports administrators with best practices. He discusses the history of coach education in different countries, particularly comparing the US and the UK, and the varying levels of structure and qualifications required for coaching roles.Importance of Supporting and Training Coaches - 11:28Timothy Baghurst raises concerns about the challenges coaches encounter, such as low pay and burnout, and stresses the importance of supporting and training them to address these issues. He suggests that providing training and financial support can incentivize coaches to stay in the sport, ultimately reducing turnover and the need to constantly fill coaching positions. Baghurst emphasizes the circular nature of the argument, stating that there is no obvious solution beyond incentivizing coaches to stay and requiring them to be licensed and trained.Qualifications and Opportunities for Collegiate Coaches- 14:41Michael Wright and Timothy Baghurst debate the qualifications and opportunities for collegiate coaches in American football, expressing concern over the emphasis on winning over student graduation. They discuss the lack of formal qualifications required and emphasize the significance of work experience and networking in securing coaching positions, highlighting the potential bias towards coaches from successful programs. The Importance of Connections in Coaching-18:09Timothy Baghurst shares a story about a coach who moved from a successful program to a less successful one and failed, highlighting the role of connections in coaching success. He emphasizes that qualifications alone are not enough and that connections and experiences play a significant role in getting coaching opportunities. Baghurst also mentions the importance of athletes and parents valuing a coach's experiences and connections over academic qualifications.Perspectives on Professional Development and Coaching Styles-25:33Michael Wright shares his insights on the value of professional certification for self-awareness and recognizing blind spots, drawing from his personal experience. Timothy Baghurst emphasizes the significance of ongoing professional development, stressing the need for standardized learning to maintain quality in coaching. The discussion also touches on different coaching styles and the impact of cultural differences on coaching approaches.Emphasizing the Importance of Coach Education-34:27Timothy Baghurst shares the story of a successful beach volleyball coach who demonstrated humility by pursuing a master's degree to improve her coaching skills, despite her previous success. He emphasizes the scarcity of coaches seeking assistance to improve their programs and highlights the significance of recognizing the need for growth in coaching. Baghurst also discusses the importance of prioritizing people over performance in coach education, emphasizing the impact of understanding and caring for athletes' well-being on their performance.Importance of Group Professional Development-48:20Timothy Baghurst stresses the significance of attending professional development as a group, highlighting the collective emphasis and understanding gained from such experiences. He shares a story of a coach who implemented the learnings from his session and achieved success in winning a state championship, illustrating the impact of group professional development on practical outcomes. In this episode, I talk about the necessity for a system shift from a coach education system that is almost completely dominated by 'qualifications', which are no more than a demonstration of competence in a moment in time to a more development and progressive model that recognises the expertise of the practitioner along their developmental journey. A significant majority of coaches want the industry to recognised as a profession and would like the work they do to be recognised by the wider public. In order to do this coaches must understand that in order to be professional recognised they need to hold themselves accountable to a process of ongoing scrutiny of their skill set so that the public can be assured of their commitment to professional development and those coaches who do show commitment to personal development can be truly separated from those that don't. Richard Burcuson and Dean Holden are the hosts of the Grass Roots Minor Hockey Podcast. A show dedicated to all things grass roots ice hockey in Canada and beyond... As they describe it... "A provocative, in-depth podcast that examines the world of minor hockey, from coaching to program development to the myriad of issues faced by everyone in the game." The guys reached out to me following my latest series called 'Coach Education is broken' as it resonated with many of their own experiences as coaches and coach educators and we decided to do a 'simulcast' which would be jointly posted oon our respective podcasts. Richard evoked the famous Monty Python sketch about a dead parrot when describing this topic so we decided to get all theatrical and do our own reading of the famous sketch...https://www.grassrootsminorhoc...Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.
This episode is a unique collaboration with Stuart Armstrong whose podcast is The Talent Equation. His May 28, 2024, show was called "Coach Education is broken." It struck a chord with Grassroots host Richard Bercuson who felt it reminded him of the famous Monty Python Dead Parrot sketch. He connected with Stuart and here's the result: a tripartite discussion with Stuart, Richard, and Dean Holden about coach education's demise.Stuart will simulcast the show on his own podcast soon, once he completes his multi-part analysis of the subject.Listener Advisory: Stuart's script read of the Dead Parrot sketch, portraying Michael Palin, is much better than Richard's feeble attempt with the John Cleese character. Dean plays the dead parrot.Contact: richard(at)grassrootsminorhockey.comTwitter:Richard - @berky544Dean Holden: funlearnreturn@gmail.com
In this episode I call for a complete rethink about the way that we think about support for coaches. I suggest that we need to 'turn the telescope around' and start to consider the skills, knowledge, and understanding that coaches already possess, rather than forcing everybody to obtain formal qualifications through coach education courses. I share a story about a brilliant coach I know who hasn't gone down the route of formal certifications, yet their coaching abilities are second to none. They're the kind of coach who, despite lacking the official badges, has that 'secret sauce', that ability to connect with people and make their experience memorable. We need a shift in mindset within coach education to appreciate and support people based on their current expertise and experiences. It's about creating tailored learning experiences, recognising prior learning, and making coaching more accessible to a wider range of people. As I said in the episode, “It's not about the piece of paper; it's about the real-world impact a coach has.”Ultimately, the coaching community is calling for a more inclusive approach in coach education not the 'one size fits all' model that is still too prevalent. A move towards effective and personalised support, ensuring every coach can thrive and contribute in their own way. By doing this, we can build a stronger, more diverse coaching community.Hope you enjoy the episode as much as I enjoyed recording it. Let's keep pushing for change and making a real difference in the world of coaching.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.
Episode 1 of 'Coach Education is broken' - 'Transformation not transaction' I take a hard look at the nature of coach education courses as a machanism to provide coaches with the kind of support they need. I criticise the thinking behind this approach and the 'culturally resient practices and beliefs' that fosters their continued use. This focus on efficiency means that coaches often get their qualifications without genuinely engaging with the material or retaining what they've learned. As a result, they're left unprepared for the real-world challenges they will face in their coaching careers.I call for a shift towards newer, more agile and dynamic educational approaches that prioritise quality learning experiences and practical application.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-talent-equation-podcast--2186775/support.

In this episode we sit down with Nick Williams, Head of Coach Education for The Padel School, to discuss the transition from coaching tennis to padel. The next generation of padel coaches will be made up of a large proportion of ex-tennis coaches. The sports are similar (while different) and so it makes sense many will come from tennis. But we discussed that as soon as coaches acknowledge there is a major difference between tennis and padel, they immediately get a better understanding of the game! When it comes to the technique from tennis to padel, there can be some big changes and many that players do not consider from the beginning! In this playlist we explain the major differences in terms of playing - Tennis to Padel PlaylistYou can find all our other podcast episodes at: podcasts.thepadelschool.com Website: www.thepadelschool.com Instagram: @thepadelschool Facebook: www.facebook.com/thepadelschool LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/the-padel-schoolTikTok: @thepadelschool

There are a lot of subtleties in coaching that you can't pick up in textbooks and from theory. We all probably know a coach that doesn't have all the qualifications, but they grasp the craft better than others who might have always had their head in a textbook. Tacit knowledge is what you pick up from doing the activity, and it's something that can be tremendously valuable in a dynamic field where you're working with people, like coaching. You'll often go to a course and start learning models and progressions (explicit and codified knowledge) that organise a lot of the tacit knowledge you already have. In this week's episode, we talk about the differences between tacit and explicit knowledge and share examples we've encountered in our coaching and helping other coaches. If you're not already subscribed to our newsletter, head over to www.legionsc.com to get a weekly selection of training tips and our favorite articles. We run online workshops for coaches as well. Have you ever returned after doing a course with your brain frazzled and unsure of what to do on Monday? Well...that is part of the journey in upgrading your knowledge and coaching model, but how can you extract the helpful information to make it workable with the people you coach. If you're working with people in person, maybe you can experiment with things immediately. But if you coach athletes online, you don't have that luxury, and you need to make sure that the things you include in someone's program are the real deal. Experimenting in your training will be the best way of trying out new things and extracting valuable information to help solve the problem set you to tackle in your coaching. We continue this series on coach education and, in this episode, discuss coach education and specifically cover how to use new information in your coaching practice. Listen to find out why breathing drills are the hardest thing to get any online client to do, why the last course you did might have a 30-day challenge and more. If you're not already subscribed to our newsletter, head over to www.legionsc.com to get a weekly selection of training tips and our favorite articles. We run online workshops for coaches as well. Curiosity is what gets a lot of coaches into training and eventually becoming coaches, and usually, these people continue to digest a lot of information, content and education about training. But being able to apply this information in a practical setting can be challenging. Especially when much of the information out there isn't delivered in a way that makes this transition easy. In this episode, we share our background in continuing education, going into detail about the courses we've done, books we've read and how we came across and discovered a lot of that information. We also discuss the importance of making information workable and how some education is purposely watered down so it speaks to their respective audiences better. In episode 202 of the Glass and Out Podcast, we're pleased to be joined by Pyry Lukkarila, Head of Coach Development for the Finnish Ice Hockey Association. Lukkarila has played a key role in re-shaping Finland's coach education system and his unique role in the hockey industry has him in a constant state of uncovering what's next by researching the top programs and coaches in and outside of hockey. If you look at the recent string of international success by a country of just under 67,000 hockey players, it's clear that his work is paying off. In the past three World Championships, the Finns have captured two Golds and one Silver. The previous eight World Junior Championships have resulted in three Golds, one Silver and one Bronze. And in the past six U18 World Championships, they have brought home two Golds, a Silver and a Bronze. Listen as he shares why coach education must always precede player development, why nothing is accomplished without good player-coach communication, and why alignment is critical to an affective development process.

Last week, the Belgium Red Flames Women's Soccer Team qualified for the knockout stages of the 2022 Women's European Soccer Championships, the first time the team has advanced that far in a major tournament. Our friend and popular podcast guest Kris Van Der Haegen is the assistant coach of that team, as well as Director of Coach Education for the Belgium FA, and we thought it would be good to share some of his best things we have learned from him. In our search we came across episode 80 from 2018, clips from three amazing podcasts in our first two seasons that changed the way John has coached his teams. Upon listening, we had to share it again. This episode contains lessons from Kris www.icoachkidseu.com, @KrisVDHaegen), Mark Upton (founder of www.MyFastestMile.com, @uppy01) and Mark Bennett (www.PDSCoach.com, @PDSCoach), long clips and then John's explanation on how these clips influenced his coaching, and how he implemented them. Our hope with the podcast is not just to disseminate information, but bring about change, not just for our listeners, but ourselves. These three coaches certainly did that and hopefully they will for you as well. This week's podcast is brought to you by our friends at Sprocket Sports.
