In this seventh episode of our series on brain-computer interfaces, we are joined by Sara Goering. Dr. Goering is Professor of Philosophy, and Core Faculty for the Program on Ethics and the Disability Studies Program at the University of Washington. She co-leads the ethics thrust at the UW Center for Neurotechnology and also spends time discussing philosophy with children in the Seattle public schools, through the UW Center for Philosophy of Children. We're kicking off Season 7 with a topic I've not yet discussed on the show: Holy Ideas. Holy Ideas remind us of the powerful spiritual roots of the Enneagram. They are great, universal, spiritual truths that we forgot or lost touch with, as the ego created an overlay of personality. Dr. Ronald Levant earned his doctorate in Clinical Psychology and Public Practice from Harvard University. He was on the faculty of Boston University, where he directed the nationally prominent Fatherhood Project, Rutgers University, Harvard Medical School at The Cambridge Hospital, and the Center for Psychological Studies, Nova Southeastern University, where he also served as Dean. He is currently Professor Emeritus of Psychology, The University of Akron, where he was Dean of the Buchtel College of Arts and Sciences, Professor of Psychology, and Core Faculty in the Counseling Psycholgy Program. Dr. Levant was the 2005 President of APA, and served as the Editor of the Psychology of Men and Masculinity from 2007-2015. To start the conversation, Dr. Levant goes through his background and some of the research he has participated in. Next, Josh asks him to define the term he coined - Normative Male Alexithymia - meaning the consistent inability of men to convey their emotions. Dr Fischer has extensive field experience providing medical care in resource limited settings and was deployed as a WHO critical care physician to care for Ebola-infected patients in Gueckedou, Guinea, the epicenter of the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak, N'zerekore in response to a resurgence of Ebola virus disease (EVD) and the Democratic Republic of Congo for outbreaks in 2018 and 2019 where he helped launch the use of novel therapeutics and optimized supportive care. Dr Fischer has active research programs exploring the clinical complications of Ebola virus disease, the prevalence, pathogenesis, and persistence of Lassa Fever (PREPARE study), and serves as one of the principal investigators for an NIH study (PREVAIL IV) evaluating a novel antiviral compound for efficacy in reducing or eliminating Ebola virus shedding in male survivors of EVD. He also has research programs exploring respiratory viral infections in high-risk populations including the elderly and HIV-infected individuals. Dr Fischer serves as the Director of Emerging Pathogens for the Institute for Global Health and Infectious Diseases at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. Native or tribal sovereignty refers to the right of American Indians and Alaska Natives to govern themselves. In some definitions native or tribal sovereignty is an inherent right, whether the tribe is federally recognized or not. But what does native sovereignty mean to Indigenous peoples, non-Indigenous peoples, governments, organizations, and beyond? Gregg Castro, Cultural Director for the Association of Ramaytush Ohlone, has worked on preserving his Indigenous heritage for three decades as a writer-activist and by educating the broader world about the Ramaytush Ohlone—the Indigenous people of the land now called San Francisco. On January 21, 11 people were killed in a mass shooting in Monterey Park, near Los Angeles, California. Two days later, 7 people were killed in another shooting in Half Moon Bay, a small city on the coast south of San Francisco. It was the 37th mass shooting in the United States in 2023, only 24 days since the year began. So why is it that despite these repeated incidents, gun laws in the United States are becoming less rather than more restrictive? What is the ideology that is driving America's love of guns? Is it a love of liberty, and the constitution, along with an instinctive suspicion of any state attempt to limit access to guns? Or is something deeper, more disturbing, behind the supreme court's recent decisions to undo laws that regulated access to guns, coupled with a huge recent increase in gun ownership? Suzanne Schneider, Is Deputy Director and Core Faculty at the Brooklyn Institute for Social Research, specializing in political theory and history of the modern Middle East. Working with the Latinx population, we try and work within those cultural values. We don't want to necessarily change anybody's values and respect is a key component in Latinx culture, but we want to work with their cultural values and help them to interpret in a new way. In this episode, Dr. Graham Taylor speaks with Dr. Lisa Sanchez-Johnsen. Lisa is an academic leader in the areas of health equity and multicultural and Latinx health and she has 30 years of experience conducting research and clinical work with Latinxs, Blacks, and other ethnic minorities in culturally competent health behavior assessments and interventions. Lisa is an Associate Professor and the Vice-Chair for Research in the Department of Family Medicine at Rush Medical College at Rush University Medical Center. She is also the Co-Chair of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Workgroup in the Department of Family Medicine, as well as Core Faculty and Director of Integrated Behavioral Health & Wellness, DEI, and Research in the Rush-Esperanza Family Medicine Residency Program. She also has an adjunct Associate Professor position in the Department of Psychology at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In 2008, Lisa received the Distinguished Professional Early Career Award from the National Latino Psychological Association based on her research, her teaching, her clinical practice, service, and mentorship as it relates to Latino Health. Together Graham and Lisa discuss the use of Latinx, Latino, Hispanic, etc. as an identity, the noteworthy medical health, and mental health-related issues, the acculturation of stress, Latinx worldviews, the importance of within-group differences, and the importance of understanding ethnic identity and cultural values. One of the things we get to do as practitioners is, we get to kind of shade in and develop with them a greater appreciation for who they are within the context of their family, their community, and their cultural heritage.
