Last legislative sessions' Education Finance Bill included creating a group focused on streamlining computer science education. This year, Representative Liz Lee has proposed a new bill that would put recommendations from that group into action. Alongside Rep. Lee are community organizations that are hoping to expose more urban, BIPOC, and young women to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics). Rep. Lee and Vanessa Young, co-founder of 30,000 Feet, an organization that exposes youth to the many tech fields available to them, joins the crew to talk about how to STEAM forward.

There was an increase in calls to the Farm Stress Line last year. The pandemic was partly responsible for that..... but depression, isolation addictions and family disputes can happen throughout the year. Jan Thorson is the Acting Executive director of Saskatchewan Mobile Crisis Services which oversees the Farm Stress Line. The line is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.Thorson says many farmers are reluctant to call for help but she urges them to just give it a try. In order to deal with concerns about food insecurity or simply finding a way to spend time during the pandemic many people found gardening gave them comfort. Vanessa Young is the with the Horticulture and Agriculture Lifelong Learning Programs with the University of Saskatchewan. She says we have a very old-fashioned view about gardening and a no till approach may be a good option for you especially if you're tired of pulling weeds. Vanessa will explain how mulch plays an important role in a no till garden, its a lot of work the first year but is worth it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
It wasn't just farmers growing vegetables this year in Canada. According to a study from Dalhousie University, the pandemic inspired a lot of people to grow their own garden. Vanessa Young with the Horticulture and Agriculture Lifelong Learning Programs with the University of Saskatchewan says there was an increased interest in gardening.Part of it, she believes, is to provide food for the family, but it is also a stress reliever. She'll also talk about the different ways you can grow a garden on the prairies. It is always great to connect with producers who are willing to share stories about their own farming operation. Lonny and Connie Bulmer run Bison River Ranch in northeast Saskatchewan. In addition to raising bison, the couple recently added a rental cabin to their property. I talk to Lonny about their farm and how the addition of the cabin has been a pleasant surprise and welcomed addition to their operation. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Two questions for you this week - have you ever heard of a yoga class with a live harpist? And what the heck is a doula?Vanessa Young-Miller is a professional harpist, yoga instructor and birth doula in the D.C./Maryland/Virginia (DMV) area. After the birth of their first child, her passion for all things birth, postpartum and parenthood began eventually leading to learning to be a birth support person (doula) after the birth of their second child. Now three young kids deep she practices the harmony of juggling her multiple hats as well as being an avid social justice activist and abolitionist. Born and raised in Wisconsin, Vanessa received her Bachelor of Music at Eastman School of Music and her Masters of Music from Carnegie Mellon University. What does it mean when baby is breech? It depends. There are different kinds, and it can unfold in various ways. However, any breech position is a variation of normal. This is important to note for today’s episode. We’re chatting with Vanessa Young as she shares the birth story of her son Leo. Vanessa aimed for a home birth for her 3rd, but went to a birth center in order to work with her friend and midwife who was on call at the center at the time Vanessa went into labor. Vanessa walks us through the birth experience, including feeling the fetal ejection reflex for the first time (she did not experience it in her first two birth). And then there’s the big moment that they realized baby Leo was in a complete breech position. Plus we talk about cord burning and the awesome opportunity it gave Vanessa’s family to bond together in the birth experience. Finally, Vanessa and Caiden discuss the benefits of networking and connecting with others, that's how you can grow your online channels. KEY TAKEAWAYS Doing and helping people was completely ideal for me. I would get in trouble for talking too much at school, so public speaking and talking has become a passion of mine. Once your network, people will start to contact you. You can't get anywhere without talking to people and networking, that's how you grow your channels The best thing about Youtube for me is you don't see that many young entrepreneurs creating inspirational content. Caiden: Who is the best person that you've met and why? Vanessa: The best advice I've been given is that 80% of people will not support you or understand what you do, but the 20% who do, will make you famous, make you happy and support you throughout your whole entire journey. This is something that took me a long time to understand, but now I realise that if you keep going you grow. Caiden: What does Young Achievers mean to you? Vanessa: Young achievers helps young entrepreneurs get noticed, you don't need to wait until you're an adult to start a job.
