Melia Tourangeau, President & CEO of Pittsburgh Symphony: Leading Through Crisis

People Solve Problems

Melia Tourangeau joined Jamie Flinchbaugh on People Solve Problems to share her experience as President & CEO of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, where she made history as both the first woman and youngest CEO in the organization's 129-year legacy. In the conversation, Melia revealed one of her most significant challenges occurred shortly after joining the Symphony. While initially identifying what appeared to be a manageable $1 million structural deficit on a $30 million budget, deeper analysis uncovered the actual deficit was closer to $5 million annually. This discovery, combined with her status as a newcomer to Pittsburgh where 75% of the budget relies on charitable sources, created an especially complex situation. The challenge intensified when contract negotiations with the musicians' union led to a 55-day strike, marking the Symphony's first work stoppage since the 1970s. Melia acknowledged this was one of the most difficult periods in her career, noting that leaders rarely survive such conflicts. However, her ability to rebuild relationships and trust afterward has been evidenced by her successful ten-year tenure. Melia shared her leadership philosophy, emphasizing the importance of bringing together the right people to solve problems. She described how she approaches complex decisions by gathering small groups of board members with diverse expertise rather than trying to get everyone in one room. This collaborative approach has helped address various challenges, including developing innovative solutions for the Symphony's endowment strategy. When discussing prioritization, she highlighted the challenge of balancing urgent daily needs with critical long-term planning. This is particularly relevant as the Symphony executes a 10-year financial recovery plan following COVID-19, working to close the gap between expenses that are 8% below pre-pandemic levels and costs that have risen 12%. One of Melia's innovative initiatives is "Disrupt," a new concert series designed to meet audience desires for more casual, contextualized experiences with shorter programs and enhanced production elements. Despite initial skepticism from staff who recalled similar past attempts, Melia committed to a five-year timeline with clear metrics and a willingness to adapt based on results. Throughout the conversation, Melia emphasized how she stays grounded during challenging times by returning to the concert hall to listen to the orchestra perform, reconnecting with the fundamental purpose of supporting artists and their work. The Trombone Corner Podcast is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass and The Brass Ark.  Join hosts Noah and John as they interview Jim Nova, 2nd trombonist with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra About Jim Nova James Nova joined the Grammy award-winning Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2009 as second/utility trombone. In 2012, Nova made his solo debut with the PSO, performing Henri Tomasi's Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. Prior to that, he was a member of the Utah Symphony Orchestra where he served eight seasons as assistant principal/second trombone.  Since 2012, James Nova has found a new passion in multitrack recording, also known as "overdubbing." Overdubbing is a process by which a musician records all the parts of a piece of music one by one and layers the recordings on top of each other to create a full ensemble. Nova has released dozens of stunning and virtuosic tracks of his own challenging arrangements of exciting repertoire for trombone choir. The arrangements employ many different trombones: contra bass, bass, tenor, small tenor, alto, and even soprano trombones! James Nova has had a lifelong love of John Williams' film scores and in December of 2017, he released a new overdub album for trombone choir, A Fall from Light to Dark. Through the chosen moments of John Williams' masterful scores, this album musically chronicles the rise and descent of Anakin Skywalker as he transforms into Darth Vader. Truly a one-man show, this album's transcriptions, playing, recording, editing, mixing, and mastering were all done by Nova himself. James Nova has always been passionate about music education. When not on stage at Heinz Hall with the Pittsburgh Symphony, he can be found at the Mary Pappert School of Music at Duquesne University where he is adjunct trombone faculty, as well as the brass coach of the Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras. Given their widespread popularity, Nova's recordings are playing an impactful role in inspiring the next generation of musicians and budding recording artists and he is frequently invited to teach outside the region. Since 2012, he has completed more than 85 visits to prominent festivals (such as the International Trombone Festival, American Trombone Workshop, and the Korea Trombone Festival, among others) and reputable educational institutions (such as the Curtis Institute of Music, Juilliard School of Music, and New England Conservatory, among others) as the featured artist and educator in concerts, masterclasses, and clinics. James Nova studied with Glenn Dodson at the Curtis Institute of Music followed by study with Norman Bolter at the New England Conservatory of Music. While in Boston, Nova played regularly with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Boston Pops Orchestra, including recordings and television broadcasts as both principal and second trombone.  James Nova is an S.E. Shires Artist and performs on his signature line of Greg Black Mouthpieces. For more info, visit jimnova.com or hear his recordings at soundcloud.com/jimnova

A former member of the Chicago Lyric Opera Orchestra and the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra, Neal has also performed as Principal trumpet for the Ravinia Festival Orchestra, Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Cincinatti Symphony Orchestra, San Diego Symphony Orchestra and the Bamberg Sinfoniker in Germany. Other orchestral performances have included the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Boston Symphony Orchestra and Houston Symphony Orchestra. Active as a chamber musician, Neal is a member of the Pittsburgh Symphony Brass whose recordings, “BACH: THE ART OF FUGUE” (1998), “A CHRISTMAS CONCERT” (2000), “THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS” (2003) and “A SONG OF CHRISTMAS” (2008) were described as “...Awhirl with color and rhythmic vitality – quite irresistible on every count.” by the Pittsburgh Post- Gazette. The recordings contain numerous arrangements by Neal Berntsen. Mr. Berntsen is also a founding member of the award-winning Asbury Brass Quintet, about which Fanfare magazine stated, “Not only expert but musical...undeniable virtuosity.” The ABQ's recording with Adolph Herseth is widely regarded as an all time classic. Mr. Berntsen has toured Japan with members of the Chicago Symphony brass section as the Chicago Brass Soloists. In 2017 Mr. Berntsen gave the Pittsburgh premier of James MacMillan's concerto for trumpet, Seraph performing with the Resonance Works Orchestra with the composer in attendance. In the summer of 2015 Mr. Berntsen premiered and recorded THE ANCIENT CALL for micro-tonal trumpet and orchestra written by Iranian-American composer Reza Vali under the baton of Keith Lockhart. Mr. Berntsen performed the piece on a specially modified trumpet, which enabled him to execute the Persian quarter tone scale. In 2018 his recording of THE ANCIENT CALL was named album of the year in Iran by Noise Magazine. Mr. Berntsen's solo recording TRUMPET VOICES was released in Nov. 2005. Critics describe the recording as, “Electric... An indispensable recording for anyone who appreciates great trumpet playing.” As an educator, Mr. Berntsen is Chair of the Brass Division in the School of Music at Carnegie Mellon University. Mr. Berntsen also serves on the Faculty of Roosevelt University in Chicago. Mr. Berntsen has presented master classes and recitals around the world. In summer 2009, Neal Berntsen began an association with the Brevard Music Center in Brevard, North Carolina. Mr. Berntsen serves as Principal Trumpet for the Brevard Music Center Orchestra, performs chamber music, teaches trumpet and coaches chamber music at the festival.

From Carnegie Mellon to Juilliard to CalArts, my guest today has served on the faculties of some prestigious institutions. Peter Frisch, is a nationally-recognized director, producer and instructor, teaching hundreds of actors across the U.S. and has poured many hours into television work and theater productions. With that type of background, you know he has plenty of juicy storytelling insights and anecdotes to share. During my discussion with Peter, we examine the concept of play when practicing the storytelling craft. He also takes us on an exploration through static and dynamic perspective, two different acting styles and which is directly related to effective storytelling. We also dig into storytelling through the lens of personality versus transformational actors (even naming some names). Along the way, he peppers his own stories from the stage which you won't want to miss. What you will learn in this episode: Why story can serve as a medium for guidance and change How non-actors can apply stage principals to enhance storytelling How play becomes essential in the craft of storytelling Who is Peter? Peter Frisch's work has taken him from coast to coast and across borders. He's directed 160 regional theater and New York-based productions, as well as produced 150 hours of network television. He was Head of Drama at Carnegie Mellon and has served on the conservatory faculty of The Juilliard School, CalArts, Harvard University, and Boston University. Peter served as Producer of the CBS soap The Young and the Restless and Fox Network's Tribes in Los Angeles. He was also the Executive Director of The Granada Theater and the Granada Restoration in Santa Barbara, Resident Director with the Berkshire Theatre Festival and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and Artistic Director of American Playwrights Theatre in Washington D.C. Along with Studs Terkel, he co-authored American Dreams which played in New York and across the U.S. and Canada. Aside from being widely published in journals, Peter's accolades include Joseph Jefferson, Outer Circle, Helen Hayes, and American Express/Kennedy Center Awards. He even won a “Best of the Fest” Award at the Seattle Film Festival for his macabre comedy Deadication. Currently, he has a private practice that has taught hundreds of actors in Boston, New York, and L.A. and now offers actor classes in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles.
