Hosts Frank Cifaldi and Phil Salvador chat with Mark and Michelle Flitman, a father-daughter duo, about Mark's career, his donated collection at the VGHF, and his autobiography: "It's Not All Fun and Games." As a semi-retired video game and toy producer, Mark shares his career highlights as a publisher producer throughout the 90's and into the early 2000's at Konami, Acclaim, Mindscape, Midway, and later, Atari. Most of his titles were licensed properties including The Simpsons (Bart's Nightmare, Virtual Bart), WWF (Royal Rumble and RAW), and several Marvel properties (Maximum Carnage). Michelle shares her efforts to preserve her father's collection, which includes concept art, design documents, and prototypes. You'll hear highlighted notable items like the Eclipse demo by Argonaut and the Monster Dunk project. The conversation also touches on the importance of trust in producer-developer relationships and the challenges of managing licensed properties.Mentioned in the show:Mark Flitman's development papers: https://archive.gamehistory.org/folder/205c628c-5d0a-4de8-a5a5-782f31706ac0.You can listen to the Video Game History Hour every other Wednesday on Patreon (one day early at the $5 tier and above), on Spotify, or on our website.See more from Michelle Flitman:Website: www.flitman.siteSee more from Mark Flitman:Book - Hardcover (Limited Run - Collector's Edition): “It's Not All Fun And Games”Book - Hardcover (Amazon): “It's Not All Fun And Games”Video Game History Foundation:Email: podcast@gamehistory.orgWebsite: gamehistory.orgSupport us on Patreon: /gamehistoryorg

Sonic Adventure 2 won our Patreon Poll in December, and I gotta be honest, I was excited. The original Sonic Adventure wasn't perfect, but it was fun enough. And the consensus seemed to be that the sequel was better. I was told there'd be no Big the Cat. Shadow's kinda cool. Fucking eh, let's go.    But then I played it. And I have to be honest. This is one of the worst game I've ever played of the podcast. The Sonic and Shadow levels are pretty dope. It's too bad that they're only about 25% of the fucking game. Everything else is mashing B with Tails/Eggman, or the most tedious, obnoxious, boring scavenger hunts I've ever experienced with Knuckles/Rouge. This game should have been called "crappy spin-off levels with occasional appearances by the two characters on the cover". What a joke.    "Well, the best part of the game is the Chao Garden." Oh, the mini game that has nothing to do with SONIC?? The guy I bought the game to play as!?!?? Unacceptable.    Angry Adam is in his final form on the show this week, and my friend Kait (who likes this game a lot) tries to calm him down, to minimal success. Kait explains why she likes this game, and I yell about why I hate it. And make no mistake - I fucking HATE it.   Fortunately, it isn't all angry. Because before I crap all over your childhood, I host another edition of the 'Remember The Game? Infamous Intro'!    This week, we talk about which Rare titles we want to see make the leap over to the Switch's Nintendo 64 Online service. When are we gonna get our hands on Metroid Prime 4? And I toss around my long standing idea of hosting an indie game podcast.   PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring three of RTG's worst - Virtual Bart, Ecco the Dolphin, and Mario is Missing.   Are you on social media? I feel like I've been teasing a 'Bart vs The Space Mutants' episode of this show since we started it. It's not a great game, but I played it religiously as a kid, and I have a weird soft spot for it and it's many, many, many faults. I wasn't able to set up a regular episode of the show this week, so I'm rolling solo, and finally gushing about my favourite bad game of all-time.   I gotta say, I'm a little shocked that so many people played this one back in the day. It was one of the first Simpsons video games, it released during Simpsons-mania, and maybe we hasn't realized that buying a Simpsons game in the 90's was akin to burning your money. Or singing it, anyway (shout out to anyone that gets that reference).   And before we talk about Bart looking for purple coloured items, it's time for another edition of the 'Remember The Game Infamous Intro'!    This week, we talk about Nintendo 64 games coming to the Nintendo Switch, because like it or not, a lot of people are talking about it. We also talk about what difficulty setting we normally play games on, and is it reasonable to have high expectations for the new upcoming Ghostbusters flick?   PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring some of the suckiest bunch of sucks that ever sucked - Bart vs The World, Bart's Nightmare, and Virtual Bart.   Are you on social media? Hosts Mat Bradley-Tschirgi, Thrasher, and Alex Miller discuss the Simpsons NES Trilogy (Bart Vs. The Space Mutants, Bart Vs. The World, Bartman Meets Radioactive Man) with Dan Kitchen, Game Designer on those titles and many more! Featuring puzzles, platforming, and a look that is rather successful at recreating the show on a 8-bit platform, these games are better than one might remember. After the interview, Mat, Thrasher, and Alex discuss the loads of Simpsons video games they've played over the decade aside from the NES titles. The Simpsons Arcade Game is a fun take on the beat-em-up genre (Final Fight, Streets of Rage). While the quality of gameplay varies for later titles like Bart's Nightmare or Virtual Bart, most of these games have imaginative levels and fun art (Bart is a pig! Throw tomatoes at Principal Skinner's ass!). Two more obscure Simpsons titles of note are the walking simulator Virtual Springfield and the Grand Theft Auto knock-off Hit & Run. GTA: San Andreas HAS to be one of the biggest retro games we've never covered on the show. Fortunately for you, dear listener, it won our Patreon poll. And with that nail biting victory, it locked down a spot in our podcast rotation.    I had never played this game prior to it winning our poll. And damned if I didn't sit down and power through this entire campaign. I still have a mountain of side missions and collectables and stuff to go back to, but I beat the game. I'm not the world's biggest GTA fan, and this is actually the first GTA game I've ever played through to the end. Is it good enough to convert me into a Grand Thefting Autoite? You'll have to listen to find out.    My buddy Andre is a big GTA fan, he played this game religiously when it came out, and we break down the good, the bad, and the RC plane flying mission of GTA: San Andreas over an hour or so.   And BEFORE we get into CJ and friends, it's the fabled Remember The Game? intro! I share some quick thoughts on the Microsoft/Bethesda acquisition, look into what was waiting at the end of the Hero Quest countdown clock we mentioned last week, talk a little Nintendo LEGO and more!   Plus, we also have another fantastic edition of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One'. **Game talk starts around 13:45**   When I launched this podcast, my idea was for my guests and I to reminisce about the games we played as kids. Both good games, and bad. It's taken 63 episodes, but we're dipping into the really bad end of the pool. Worse than Power Rangers. Worse than Bart's Nightmare or Boy and his Blob. Hell, this is worse than the last fifteen years of The Simpsons. Today, we're talking Virtual Bart.   This was one off the few Simpsons video games I never owned as a kid. We rented it a couple of times, and I wanted to like it. I mean, it was The Simpsons! But I never got into it. I can look past the faults of most Simpsons games because I loved the show so much, but this game sucks. Half of the mini games are borderline unplayable. The controls are hot garbage. A few cameos by various characters from the show aren't nearly enough to salvage this piece of crap.    You play as Bart (obviously), and he gets strapped into a VR machine at a scene fair. The opening cutscene is actually the best part of the game. The machine then turns into a gameshow style wheel. The player stops it, and whatever image Bart's head stops on decides what mini-game you play. I have no idea what happens if you finish all the levels, because I can't beat most of them.    We'll explain what they all are this week. Listen to this podcast and move on. If you want The Simpsons to ruin your day, just watch one of the modern episodes of the show. They're all way better than Virtual Bart.    I hate this game. My buddy Chris is my guest this week, and we have a couple beers while we tell you why it sucks on this episode of 'Remember The Game?'. Enjoy the podcast, and then try to forget this game.
