Hanna-Barbera built an impossibly huge stable of characters over the passing decades, but—until recently—ironic usage on Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law was the last time this kooky cast saw the light of day. Fast-forward 20 years, and thanks to creator C.H. Greenblatt, we have Jellystone: a more affectionate reference pile full of deep cuts, crazy plots, great drawings, and slightly edgy humor. "Life's a Beach" (May 21, 1989) For our final season, we're not hitting up that many of the GEE favorites. There's no Seinfeld, no Friends, no Roseanne, no Golden Girls. Hell, there's not a Simpsons on the schedule at the moment. So look sharp!" - Stan Smith This week, we're switching gears and looking back at the first episode of American Dad, which only just returned to Fox after over a decade of basic cable existence. Though the series was at first seen as a cheap copy of Family Guy born out of the misery of the George W. Bush administration, American Dad didn't take long to carve out its own weird, wonderful identity and quietly thrive over the last two decades. Years before The Simpsons made Fox a household institution, the network succeeded in its first era thanks to another cartoony family that just happened to be living, breathing human beings. In mid-1987, Fox kicked off its prime-time programming with Married... with Children, a bawdy domestic farce with characters far meaner and stories far cruder than your average sitcom. And over its healthy eleven seasons, this humble show grew from an inspired satire to a broad, gleefully silly series of adventures for its unwitting folk hero, Al Bundy. On this special live-action edition of What A Cartoon, join us as we take a look at this early Fox hit that paved the way for our bread and butter—but please, no obnoxious hooting and hollering. Adult Swim is typically known for cynical, vulgar, and gross shows about irredeemable sociopaths—shows that we absolutely love, mind you. But late last year, the programming block unveiled a wonderful new creation that's completely antithetical to their general philosophy. A sendup of TGIF sitcoms from the '90s, Haha, You Clowns centers around three large sons and their also large dad, and each episode focuses on a very small problem that usually gets blown way out of proportion. The pitch may sound very simple on paper, but the execution, with its incredibly observational humor and cast of lovable goofs, makes this little series both heartwarming and hilarious. So sit back and keep a close eye on your favorite garment as we jump into the weird but welcoming world of these three yoked-up brothers. But when he uses his new mayoral powers against the Simpsons, Bart and Lisa have to team up or else risk living in a motel that probably costs more than six dollars a night. Your regularly scheduled episode of Talking Simpsons is being pushed to next week for a very good reason: we've decided to shift our priorities a bit and cover an infamous animated special that's the perfect fodder for our podcast. (And we haven't lost our minds—it's for a good cause.) So if you head on over to our Patreon shop, you'll see that we've covered "The Simpsons Guy," The Family Guy season 13 premiere that mashes up Our Favorite Family with... that other family. The price? A meager $10. And every penny of it will go to the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota. Can't afford an extra $10 this month? We'll see you next week, when we cover season six's Sideshow Bob Roberts. But just remember the Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota is always accepting donations, so keep them in mind whenever you've got a little extra in the bank. Again, if you'd like to hear our exclusive podcast all about the season 13 Family Guy episode, "The Simpsons Guy," just click right here to head over to our Patreon shop. IMPORTANT NOTE: Please DO NOT buy the episode via the iOS Patreon app! Apple personally jacks up the price by $4.50, and that extra fee goes directly to them.

In the mid-80s, the people who brought us cartoons like G.I. Joe and Transformers asked themselves an important question: Why don't we try selling toys to girls? And sell they did via the magic of Jem: a truly outrageous animated series about a glam-rocking girl group at odds with their bitter rivals, The Misfits. While the series burned fast and bright—and failed to make waves with a revival 30 years later—Jem lives on in our hearts as one of the most delightfully '80s creations ever made (that also happens to be anime). "Mom, romance is dead. It was acquired in a hostile takeover by Hallmark and Disney, homogenized, and sold off, piece by piece.'" - Lisa Simpson In what's probably the worst episode of The Simpsons—or at least the biggest waste of time—the family recounts stories of love and loss via 16 clips and/or clip packages. Simpson Lisa becomes the victim of her own insecurities when she meets Allison Taylor: a perfectly nice girl who just happens to be younger and better than her at everything. September 19, 1994: a day that will live in... Wait, what's the opposite of infamy? 31 years ago, the lives of Simpsons fans changed forever when their favorite show went from a weekly thing to a twice-daily thing thanks to the power of syndication. In this week's format-breaking podcast, we take a look at the programming package that made a certain era of The Simpsons a second language for TV-addicted latchkey kids. In 1990, Fox aired a pilot that then went unseen for over 26 years. Its name? Hollywood Dog. And while it isn't very good, this live-action/animation hybrid—developed at the same time as The Simpsons—features some truly ambitious special effects for a network that had barely gotten off of the ground. We could only rely on fuzzy memories for the nearly three decades Hollywood Dog remained unavailable, but thankfully, some kind maniac discovered a clean copy, and it's currently available for all to see on Youtube. Now, three entirely different maniacs can discuss it on this very podcast! This week on What A Cartoon, join us and special guest Drew Mackie (of Gayest Episode Ever) as we gaze in terror at Hollywood Dog: the Poochie-fied character who threatened to kick off the '90s, but instead kicked the bucket and faded into obscurity. We've reached the end of the month, which means it's time for another episode of our community podcast! With this episode, we welcome you to the beginning of constant, round-the-clock coverage of The Simpsons Movie sequel; it's coming, and you're going to be hearing about it for the next 20 months. After dishing dirt on Hollyweird, we discuss the beginning of broadcast season 37—including the latest Treehouse of Horror—and the all-but-confirmed rumors of Simpsons characters appearing in Fortnite. And, as always, we read and respond to your comments and questions from the last round of episodes. It's all happening on Talk to the Audience: the entertainment property that doesn't make you wait two decades between installments! "Marge, look at me. We've been separated for a day, and I'm as dirty as a Frenchman. In another few hours I'll be dead. I can't afford to lose your trust again!" - Homer Simpson To regain some confidence and overcome his supposed slowness, Homer takes on a new part-time job teaching a class on marriage at the Springfield Adult Education Annex. But this place of learning soon becomes a house of hearing about things when he starts revealing secrets about Marge to capture the attention of his students. "I can't be held responsible for what my goons were ordered to do!" - Charles Montgomery Burns After yet another brush with death, Mr. Burns realizes the people of Springfield would rather dance on his grave than celebrate his legacy. But instead of committing various good deeds to restore his reputation, he buys every media outlet in town, except for one holdout: Lisa Simpson's Red Dress Press. As his grip on the fourth estate grows even tighter, we find out if ponies, power outages, and even Milhouse-based misinformation will get Lisa to fold. "You know, you remind me of a poem I can't remember, and a song that may never have existed, and a place I'm not sure I've ever been to..." - Abe Simpson Marge plays matchmaker and forges a love connection between her mother and Abe Simpson, despite Homer's protests that this pairing will make their children retroactively inbred. But their cozy senior romance takes a turn for the worse when Mr. Burns enters the picture and sweeps Jackie off her feet with his incredible dancing and kissing skills. "Son, I've learned one thing in this life. To stay out of trouble, just say nothing. Don't rock the boat. Don't even get IN the boat! Just buy some ice cream and walk around the pier. But don't go in the bathrooms; they're filthy." - Homer Simpson When Bart unwittingly moons the American flag, the town of Springfield ends up in hot water, and The Simpsons eventually find themselves imprisoned in a reeducation camp. As this political satire unfolds, we must ask ourselves if it's possible to be critical of the current administration while refusing to mention the President—or any other politician—by name.
