It has been a year since parliament commissioned an internal investigation into the fire that gutted buildings in the parliamentary precinct in Cape Town on January 2 2021 and burned for three days. Zandile Mafe is facing criminal charges related to the fire. On Wednesday parliament secretary Xolile George released the investigation findings.He said the investigation found the fire could have been prevented if more care had been taken to limit vulnerabilities.

January 2nd marks a year since the devastating fire that gutted the Old Assembly and new National Assembly buildings. Zandile Mafe who remains in police custody, is accused of starting the fire. The National Assembly building remains unsafe to enter as it was totally destroyed when the fire re-ignited on the third of January after 4 PM. The attorney for parliament arson accused, Zandile Mafe, has told the High Court in Cape Town that his client is on a hunger strike. Mafe was scheduled to appear in court for a pre-trail conference today but refused to enter the dock from the holding cells. The Alleged parliament arsonist Zandile Mafe is expected to appear at the Cape Town magistrates court today following the January torching of the national Parliament. The state alleges that he broke into parliament with intent to commit terrorism and theft. He's also facing charges of arson and other additional charges of terrorism. The state had asked for a six week postponement at the last appearance as the forensic investigation had not been completed.
