The hottest ticket at this year's Australian Open tennis tournament wasn't to see Novak Djokovic or Iga Swiatek, or even the tournament's eventual winners, Carlos Alcaraz and Elena Rybakina. Instead, the longest queues were to watch the world number 49, Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. Her first round match, which she lost, drew thousands of fans to Melbourne Park, with many being left disappointed as they were unable to find a seat on what was one of the smaller courts. In a bonus episode from More than the Score, the BBC World Service podcast that scours the globe to tell stories from beyond the scoresheet, journalists Kate Reyes and Ben Rothenberg talked to Ed Harry where Eala came from, how far she could go, and what her popularity might mean for the future of tennis and sport in the Philippines. Every Monday to Friday, More than the Score tells stories beyond the scoresheet from all over the world of sport. From the Winter Olympics to the Super Bowl, the Australian Open to the Diamond League, and netball to Formula 1.

Boris Becker is a former German tennis player, coach, and writer, regarded as one of the most charismatic legends of modern tennis. In 1985, at just 17 years old, he made history by becoming the youngest Wimbledon champion, a victory that propelled him to worldwide fame. Throughout his career, he won six Grand Slam titles, a Davis Cup, and an Olympic medal, standing out for his aggressive playing style, powerful volley, and unbreakable competitive spirit. After retiring, Becker has remained closely connected to tennis as a coach—most notably guiding Novak Djokovic during one of the most successful periods of his career—and as a sports commentator. He has also explored a more personal and reflective side as the author of The Player, an autobiography in which he recounts his meteoric rise, his triumphs, his setbacks, and the lessons learned both on and off the court.

Frank convinced Eddie to start using a Whoop, but he's already planning to switch to an Apple Watch and find a new padel partner. Novak Djokovic came up short in the Australian Open Final against Carlos Alcaraz, but did he do enough to prove that he can still compete with the 'Big Two'? Tom Brady has started posting on Instagram like a teenage girl, and Eddie finds it eerily reminiscent of some old pictures of Frank. And Eddie is frustrated by the college football transfer portal, senior leadership at Blackburn Rovers, the Epstein List, and the lack of concern over ties between the Memphis Grizzlies' owner and Russia.

There was going to be history on Sunday no matter what, and Ben and Tumaini end their Australian Open coverage with discussion of Carlos Alcaraz's big win over Novak Djokovic, coming back from a slow start to clinch his career slam by winning the Australian Open, his seventh major title overall. We discuss Alcaraz's present and his ambitions for all-time greatness, where this event leaves his rivalry with Sinner, the future for Djokovic, the significance of a post-Ferrero win. We also, as we planned, use our last show of the tournament to look back at one of the early storylines: American players getting questions about U.S. politics in press conferences, and why we think this is a completely fair and rational thing to have happen. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. And please check out Ben's new writing home, Bounces! And Tumaini's work at The Guardian!

After a dozen days that were mostly dull, the Australian Open kicked into high gear on Day 13, and so Ben and Tumaini stayed up late to discuss what made it so great. Carlos Alcaraz was up big, then was in trouble, then was up against the wall, but finally eked out a rousing win over Alexander Zverev to book his spot in his first Australian Open final. But instead of being joined by his customary opponent Jannik Sinner for the fourth time in a row in a major final, Alcaraz will face 38-year-old Novak Djokovic, who used his restedness to deliver a redline beauty of a match. We look ahead to the final and how Djokovic might be able to win it, where these losses leave both Zverev and Sinner, and more. Thank you for listening! Our Patreon is back up and running to ensure NCR keeps going and stays ad-free, and we hope you can join in supporting NCR! And we especially thank our GOAT backers: Pam Shriver and J. O'D. Hollywood's Headlines wrap the hour with ESPN promoting the WWE Royal Rumble, a new 30 for 30 on the “Philly Special,” and Novak Djokovic's historic racket heading to auction.
