South African cattle farmers are concerned that the Agricultural Research Council veterinary research campus in Onderstepoort has not sent any new Foot and Mouth Disease samples to the Pirbright Institute in the UK, to test whether the vaccines being produced are properly matched to the strain affecting our cattle. Of the 470 communal toilets which GroundUp counted recently in Marikana informal settlement in Philippi East, only 45 were working, and according to community leaders, more than 4,000 families live in the settlement. LEAP Officer Brent Williams was on a routine patrol at Monwabisi Beach when he noticed a young boy in distress in the water. With no lifeguards on duty because it is out of season, Williams removed his tactical gear and ran into the water to help.
