Western Cape serious violent crime detectives have launched a manhunt for gunman following a shooting that left two men dead in Knysna. Police say the victims, aged 47 and 48, were in a vehicle in Bongani at around nine last night when they came under fire. Detectives investigating another shooting involving a councillor on Wednesday have been reinforced. Police are probing whether the incidents are linked, while no arrests have been made. A large group of Cape Peninsula University of Technology students staged a sit-in in front of the university's administration building, at the Bellville main campus in Cape Town. Earlier, university management gave the students a deadline of 4pm on Wednesday to vacate the university residences across all campuses, citing safety concerns. However, the students decided not to vacate, saying there was no consultation with them or the majority, who live outside of the Western Cape. In his latest interview with Chris Steyn, former Western Cape Provincial Police Commissioner, Dr. Lennit Max hails the appointments of four new provincial commissioners. “This time around I am very pleased that the Acting National Commissioner in her wisdom decided that there's merit among people of colour.” He points out that all four appear seasoned as well. “Lieutenant General Sizakhele Dyanti in the Western Cape, got 34 years of service. Lieutenant General Arthur Adams, Northwest, 34 years of service as well. Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, Limpopo, 38 years of service. And Lieutenant General Apapia Modise of Mpumalanga, 37 years of service. They are not people who are parachuted into those ranks.” As for the latest "heartbreaking "testimony at the Madlanga Commission, Dr Max says it is “damaging not only for Andrea Johnson, but to IDAC as a whole, the NPA, but most importantly, to government because government put these systems in place to ensure that they address the corruption in this country and we as citizens got hope that government is doing the right thing to put these systems in place and also to appoint people they believe got the necessary skill and commitment to serve our country without fear or favour. And it is totally unacceptable, and I think there must be consequences to that effect.” Lastly, Dr Max shares highlights from his autobiography which is being launched this month: “A Life That Refused to Bow”.

An anti-immigration raid on a private housing estate in the Western Cape is causing a furore. In this interview with Chris Steyn, Eva Crouwel, a property owner on High Riding Estate, describes how police in a fleet of about six vans - accompanied by Home Affairs officials - descended on the estate last week, gained entry without a warrant, “stopped their vehicles at multiple properties, were knocking on doors, were hooting their cars, effectively in an effort seemingly to gain access to the properties” until they were escorted off the estate by several residents and security. Crouwel, a trained lawyer, says: “I have done some investigation into the various applicable legislations and have not been able to ascertain that there is in fact a permission for access to private residential properties without producing a warrant…And if we allow the Police Force of South Africa to enter those premises without due cause or warrant, then that becomes a very slippery road that we are going to find ourselves on.” While the matter is now under further legal advisement, Crouwel has this advice for other estates: “Unless somebody has a warrant against you or something on your property in a very well described matter, on duly documented legal documents, you are not under any responsibility to let them onto your property.”

His early holidays with his aunt and uncle in Hluhluwe sparked his love for Zululand and determined the career he would later pursue. As the youngest of five siblings and the odd man out with the neighbourhood children, Kevin developed a passion for nature. Afternoons were spent exploring the Botanic Gardens where he honed his bird watching skills, collected butterflies and developed an interest in plants, including collecting and growing orchids at the age of seven, becoming the youngest orchid grower in South Africa for over 10 years. Kevin is currently writing and illustrating a book on the orchids of KZN and his vast knowledge has been put to good use while working with the Pollination Ecology department at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Kevin was always determined to work in nature conservation. He attained a National Diploma in Nature Conservation from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, where he met his conservationist wife. They have been working together ever since. He has worked at government run, Ndumo Game Reserve as well as a number of private reserves in KZN, the Western and Eastern Cape, Swaziland and Limpopo provinces. He was the conservation manager for Cousine Island in the Seychelles for five 5 years conducting in-depth monitoring of nesting Hawksbill sea turtles, sea birds and endangered land birds. From there he took up the position of landscape manager in the Bahamas, before returning to South Africa to manage a private nature reserve in the Western Cape.
