More than 20 people are set to appear in the Nelspruit Magistrate's Court today, facing charges of fraud, theft and money‑laundering linked to a R113 million "emergency school repairs" scheme in Mpumalanga. The Hawks, with support from Gauteng, Limpopo and the Western Cape, arrested the suspects in a coordinated operation targeting 40 individuals and companies accused of siphoning funds meant for 21 rural schools. No longer a distant agricultural issue, the outbreak is now affecting everyday staples such as milk, cheese, yoghurt and even baby formula. As infected animals produce less milk, exports face restrictions and supply chains tighten, pressure is building across the entire food system — from farmers to retailers to households, raising serious concerns about food security and the rising cost of living. The South African Police Service has condemned the brutal killing of three people, including an infant, in a shooting incident on Tuesday. The police say at approximately 22:00, police responded to reports of a shooting at Sunbird Court in Athlone. Upon arrival, officers found the bodies of two women aged 25 and 36, as well as a nine-month-old baby, who had sustained fatal gunshot wounds. Two adult males were also shot and injured during the incident and were transported to a medical facility for treatment. The Athlone police in Western Cape say preliminary information indicates that three unknown suspects fled the scene and have not yet been arrested. The motive for the attack is still under investigation. Western Cape police spokesperson Colonel Andrè Traut explains.

In the latest edition of the Electoral Roadshow with Chris Steyn and analyst Wayne Sussman, he dissects last night's by-elections in which the Democratic Alliance (DA) won two seats off the African National Congress (ANC), one in the Cape Winelands and another in the West Coast. “…it's clear that the ANC are in big trouble in the Western Cape,” Sussman says. The ANC's reversal of fortune continued in Gauteng where voter support in one of its traditional strongholds fell from 73% to 57%. “This means that if the party had to continue with this trajectory or this trend line, they will no longer be the largest party in a key municipality like Mogale City after 2026. So across the board, the ANC having a difficult night.” Sussman also previews today's Press Conference by embattled DA leader John Steenhuisen. “I think today will be a press conference on John Steenhuisen's terms where he will get to put …his side of the story. And I'm sure it's going to be a very difficult day for him, but he'll want to pen his own obiutuary as the party leader.”

Send us a textHaving a baby should be safe. Yet it's far too often a death sentence for both the mother and the baby. An estimated 260,000 women died in 2023 during and right after giving birth, and those numbers will have risen with the loss of United States global aid dollars.There are ways to improve this – better prenatal care is an obvious one. According to the World Health Organization, women giving birth most often die from severe bleeding, infections, or other complications. Pregnant women also die from high blood pressure or from unsafe abortions or complications of miscarriage.If women can get the right medical care during pregnancy, delivery, and after childbirth, the risk of death plummets. But doctors and nurses can be scarce, especially in lower-income countries. Women also often fear going to hospitals or clinics, mistrust them, or simply lack the money to make use of them. A much easier solution is a properly trained midwife. The International Confederation of Midwives supports groups that train and advocate for midwives, who can help ensure safe births.Some countries even have programs to train and license midwives. Professor Doreen Kaura of the University of the Western Cape in Belville, South Africa heads one such program. She also conducts research into the effects of midwifery practice.Not only can well-trained midwives provide high-level medical care for pregnant and delivering women, but they can take into account cultural beliefs and practices that earn trust and ensure that women show up for the lifesaving care they need, Kaura has found. “Respectful care is not optional,” she says.Listen here as she tells One World, One Health about the benefits of midwives and how they can save both lives and money.
