Gauteng's Basic Education Department says it continues to offer psycho-social support to the siblings and family of slain teenager Likhona Fose. The department's spokesperson Steve Mabona was speaking outside the Roodepoort Magistrates Court where a 39-year-old suspect Mduduzi Mnisi, made a brief appearance to apply for bail. The court postponed the murder case as Mnisi stands accused for the murder of the 14-year-old Fose whose mutilated body was discovered in an open veld in Durban Deep West of Johannesburg. Angry community members in Carolina, Mpumalanga are planning to shutdown the area in protest over poor service delivery. The community accuses the Chief Luthuli Municipality of forcing them to pay for ineffective services. Among their concerns are the poor quality of water, and high electricity prices. Residents of Eldorado Park in Johannesburg are calling on government and local officials to immediately intervene in the violence plaguing the area. This follows a recent shooting of three people over the weekend. Its alleged that unknown suspects opened fire on nine young men standing outside a mosque. The South African government has expressed its condolences to India following the catastrophic crash of Air India Flight AI171. The London-bound flight plummeted shortly after departing Ahmedabad, in the western Indian state of Gujarat.claiming the lives of almost all passengers and crew on board and killed additional people on the ground. The aircraft, carrying individuals from multiple nations, crashed into a residential area, marking the deadliest aviation disaster in over a decade. The bodies of 21 out of the 78 people that have been reported to have died in floods in Mthatha in the Eastern Cape have been positively identified. Heavy rainfall caused the floods in the area. An Air India plane bound for London with 242 people on board has crashed minutes after taking off from India's Western City of Ahmedabad. The airline and local police say It remains unclear if there are any fatalities. The plane was headed to Gatwick airport in the UK and its understood the crash may have occurred in a civilian area near the airport. Jon Gericke spoke to SABC correspondent in India, Neha Poonia.
Authorities in the Eastern Cape have recovered the minibus taxi that was carrying the ten missing learners in the Mthatha region in the eastern Cape. The minibus taxi was swept into a river in Decoligny yesterday following floods that heavy rain caused in the province. Nine people have since lost their lives. The 2025 Comrades Marathon is now well under way since nearly 25,000 runners set off in Pietermaritzburg. The 89km race started at 5.45 am, with the cut-off time coming 12 hours later at 5.30pm. One of the biggest changes this year was a new two-group start. This first group of the fastest qualifying runners in the field, with the elites at the front, went off first. The late ANC struggle icon, Gertrude Shope will be laid to rest in Johannesburg TODAY. The 99 year old Ma-Shope, who passed on last Thursday was the President of the ANC Women's League and the Head of ANC Women Section in exile. She was also amongst the first cohort of women MPs after the first democratic elections in 1994. Two women accused of stealing two babies from Dora Nginza hospital in the Eastern Cape are appearing at the New Brighton magistrates court. The two premature babies (2 and 4 days old) were abducted from Dora Nginza hospital on Tuesday night, and were found on Wednesday with two women bringing them back to the hospital. Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng has ordered that vehicle tracking evidence of all vehicles that were present when one of the accused in the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial was arrested be given to the defence. This after defence counsel Charles Mnisitold the High Court in Pretoria that the movement of the vehicles was central to Muzi Sibiya's defence. The Communications and Digital Technologies Department has lauded the current SABC board for its efforts towards stabilising the institution. The department, SABC executives and board members are currently briefing parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts, on the public broadcaster's audit outcomes and financial performance. The department's Deputy Minister, Mondli Gungubele earlier said that since the introduction of the current board, the SABC has shown a significant improvement in its governance. The trial-within-a-trial in the 255 million rand asbestos roof removal case, has been postponed to Wednesday following the illness of one of the state's witnesses. Judge Phillip Loubser was expected to deliver a ruling on whether defense lawyers can cross examine the state witness. This comes after Laurence Hodes, who is the legal representative of former Free State premier, Ace Magashule, informed the court that he also wanted to cross examine the state witness. Constable Cebekhulu Linda is being buried today in Bloemforntein in the Free State. Constable Cebekhulu Linda was among the three constables whose bodies were retrieved from the Hennops river in Centurion, Pretoria, a week ago. Family and friends have described constable Cebekhulu Linda as a person who was destined for greatness. They say from a young age he was tasked with responsibilities which he carried out with diligence. His funeral service is under way at the St Rose Catholic Church in Bochabela in Bloemfontein. The families of journalist Aserie Ndlovu's partner Zodwa Mdhluli are pinning their hopes on the DNA tests to be conducted on the remains found in the bushes in Limpopo to determine if they are those of their loved ones. Police recovered the remains believed to be those of the missing couple in Rust de Winter in Limpopo. The couple has been missing since February. Police say one of the five people arrested for the couple's disappearance led them to the area where the remains were found. National Police Commissioner, General Fanie Masemola has thanked Constable Boipelo Senoge for her dedication in serving her country through the SAPS. He spoke at her funeral held at St. Peter Anglican church at Rocklands in Bloemfontein. Senoge was stationed in Parkweg Police station in Bloemfontein since July 2024.Constable Senoge died alongside two of her colleagues - Costables Cebekhulu Linda and Keabetswe Buys. The bodies of the three officers were recovered from the Hennops River at Centurion, (Gauteng) last week after they had gone missing on the 23rd of April. They were last seen by their families when they left their homes in Bloemfontein travelling to their area of deployment in Limpopo. However the search for the three constables reached a tragic end this week when the first two bodies were found while the third body was recove shortly after. The Pretoria High Court is today expected to make a ruling in the 20 years illegal cigarettes trading allegation against Hennie Delport by SARS. The R264 million case is against Delport for allegedly claiming false VAT and exercise duties from Sars resumes in the High Court in Pretoria today. Delport has cited collusion between the South African Revenue Service (Sars) and British American Tobacco (BAT) to shut him down.
