The Communications and Digital Technologies Department has lauded the current SABC board for its efforts towards stabilising the institution. The department, SABC executives and board members are currently briefing parliament's Standing Committee on Public Accounts, on the public broadcaster's audit outcomes and financial performance. The department's Deputy Minister, Mondli Gungubele earlier said that since the introduction of the current board, the SABC has shown a significant improvement in its governance. KwaZulu-Natal Premier, Thami Ntuli has appealed to customers of Ithala Development Bank to continue supporting the financial institution, following a recent Pietermaritzburg High Court judgement. The judgement was handed down earlier this week, after Ithala had sought an urgent court interdict against the Repayment Administrator's instruction in January, that Ithala's ABSA accounts be frozen. The trial-within-a-trial in the 255 million rand asbestos roof removal case, has been postponed to Wednesday following the illness of one of the state's witnesses. Judge Phillip Loubser was expected to deliver a ruling on whether defense lawyers can cross examine the state witness. This comes after Laurence Hodes, who is the legal representative of former Free State premier, Ace Magashule, informed the court that he also wanted to cross examine the state witness. The families of journalist Aserie Ndlovu's partner Zodwa Mdhluli are pinning their hopes on the DNA tests to be conducted on the remains found in the bushes in Limpopo to determine if they are those of their loved ones. Police recovered the remains believed to be those of the missing couple in Rust de Winter in Limpopo. The couple has been missing since February. Police say one of the five people arrested for the couple's disappearance led them to the area where the remains were found. Constable Cebekhulu Linda is being buried today in Bloemforntein in the Free State. Constable Cebekhulu Linda was among the three constables whose bodies were retrieved from the Hennops river in Centurion, Pretoria, a week ago. Family and friends have described constable Cebekhulu Linda as a person who was destined for greatness. They say from a young age he was tasked with responsibilities which he carried out with diligence. His funeral service is under way at the St Rose Catholic Church in Bochabela in Bloemfontein. National Police Commissioner, General Fanie Masemola has thanked Constable Boipelo Senoge for her dedication in serving her country through the SAPS. He spoke at her funeral held at St. Peter Anglican church at Rocklands in Bloemfontein. Senoge was stationed in Parkweg Police station in Bloemfontein since July 2024.Constable Senoge died alongside two of her colleagues - Costables Cebekhulu Linda and Keabetswe Buys. The bodies of the three officers were recovered from the Hennops River at Centurion, (Gauteng) last week after they had gone missing on the 23rd of April. They were last seen by their families when they left their homes in Bloemfontein travelling to their area of deployment in Limpopo. However the search for the three constables reached a tragic end this week when the first two bodies were found while the third body was recove shortly after. The Pretoria High Court is today expected to make a ruling in the 20 years illegal cigarettes trading allegation against Hennie Delport by SARS. The R264 million case is against Delport for allegedly claiming false VAT and exercise duties from Sars resumes in the High Court in Pretoria today. Delport has cited collusion between the South African Revenue Service (Sars) and British American Tobacco (BAT) to shut him down. Orlando Pirates emerged the better side over Soweto derby rivals Kaizer Chiefs after claiming a 2-1 win at the FNB Stadium YESTERDAY. The Judicial Conduct Tribunal has reserved its decision in relation to complaints lodged by ten judges of the Western Cape High Court and the Cape Bar Council against Judge Mushtak Parker. Judge Parker is facing allegations of lying under oath and lying by deposing to an affidavit which stated that he was physically assaulted allegedly by the then Judge President John Hlophe - who has since been impeached. The tribunal earlier noted that Judge Parker has failed by participate in the tribunal and has offered no apology nor has he disputed the allegations levelled against him. All 18 accused in the 255 million rand Asbestos roof removal fraud and corruption case are back in the Free State High Court for trial. The accused include several business affiliates of former Free State Premier Ace Magashule, former MEC for Human Settlement Olly Mlamleli and businessman Edwin Sodi. Two men accused of the murder of alleged Western Cape underworld figure and businessman, Mark Lifman, have made a brief appearance at the George Magistrate's Court. Lifman was gunned down in the parking lot of the Garden Route mall in November while on trial with several co-accused including alleged gang boss Jerome Booysen, on a raft of charges. The Community of Eersterust, East of Pretoria has vowed to shutdown the township from today over poor service delivery. The action is in retaliation to especially a lack of street lights. The community's anger reached boiling point this past week after a young man was recently hijacked and killed in front of his house. Protest marches across the country continue to call for justice for a seven year old girl from Matatiele in the Eastern Cape that was allegedly raped while at school. Students in Soweto will be embarking on a peaceful march from Vilakazi Street to Orlando Court then to Diepkloof police station to deliver their memorandum. Meanwhile, in Matatiele, several religious groups are holding a prayer session following reports on two other minors that were allegedly raped at another private school in the area. The Protea Magistrate's Court in Soweto has transferred the case against a man accused of raping and murdering a six-year-old girl, to the High Court in Johannesburg. Twety-four-year-old Mozambican national, Pethe Simiao was arrested last year and was charged with the kidnapping, rape, murder of the girl who disapppeared shortly before her remains were found. Gauteng police have launched a manhunt for a group of gunmen who opened fire and killed three men, believed to be taxi marshals, in Mofolo Central, in Soweto. Johannesburg Metro Police and emergency services are currently at the scene of the shooting, where vehicles are being diverted away from the area. The DA's future in the government of national unity - GNU - appears to be hanging in the balance after it voted against finance minister Enoch Godongwana's budget on Wednesday. While analysts agree that the DA and ANC have been on the brink many times before, they say this time is the worst and most perilous for stability. Pressure also appears to be mounting from the ANC NEC for President Cyril Ramaphosa to deal with the DA especially after the party took the 0.5 percentage point VAT hike and the process of passing the fiscal framework document to court for review. The DA's federal executive has reportedly held meetings to decide on it's future in the GNU but the outcomes of the deliberations are yet to be made public. DA leader John Steenhuisen however told the SABC yesterday that his party remains committed to the GNU. The application to disclose the investigation diary in the former National Assembly Speaker, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula corruption case has been dismissed. Presiding Judge Mokhine Mosopa said that Mapisa-Nqakula failed to prove her case in the Pretoria High Court. Mapisa-Nqakula's defense lawyers argued that the disclosure of section C of the docket could lead to her exoneration from the corruption case. The uMkhonto we Sizwe Party has snatched from the African National Congress, ward 28 in KwaDukuza, in KwaZulu-Natal's iLembe District Municipality. The ward became vacant when Vishnugopal Govender resigned as ANC ward councilor, and contested the by-election as an MK Party candidate. He received 62 per cent of the votes. Candidates from the ANC, Inkatha Freedom Party, Economic Freedom Fighters and the MK Party contested the ward. Eleven people, eight of who are employees of the South African Social Security Agency, are expected to apply for bail in the Lenasia Magistrate's Court, in Johannesburg. The accused were arrested after being implicated in a 260-million-rand fraud syndicate operating within the social security. Sedert Augustus vanjaar het 2 000 onwettige mynwerkers by die Buffelsfontein-myn na die oppervlak gekom en minstens 78 zama zama's is dood. Die kommissie se advokaat, Sandra Makoasha, het aan die SABC gesê die besluit om die ondersoek nasionaal uit te brei, is genoodsaak deur die omvang van dit wat by Stilfontein gebeur, en voorleggings van gemeenskapslede, mynwerkers en nieregeringsorganisasies:
Die politieke ontleder Sandile Swana sê die ANC is in die asblik van die geskiedenis solank mense soos onder andere president Cyril Ramaphosa en sekretaris-generaal Fikile Mbalula in beheer is. Ramaphosa lewer vandag die ANC se 8 Januarie-verklaring in Khayelitsha in Kaapstad, as deel van die party se 113de verjaardagvieringe. Swana het aan die SABC gesê die ANC se hernuwingsprogram is 'n mors van tyd.
Die Wes-Kaapse Menseregtekommissie het getuies versoek om na vore te kom terwyl daar ondersoek ingestel word na beweerde rassisme op 'n FlySafair-vlug van Kaapstad na Durban. 'n Passasier het na bewering rasse-uitlatings teenoor 'n vlugkelner gemaak. Tshepi Madlingozi van die kommissie het aan die SABC bevestig drie klagtes is ontvang en tans word daar beoordeel of daar prima facie bewyse van rassisme of haatspraak is ingevolge die Wet op die Bevordering van Gelykheid.
Die Padvragvereniging sê hy is bekommerd oor vertragings by Transnet se Pier 2-vrageindpunt by die Durbanse hawe. Die hawe-operateur het Dinsdag aan klante gesê die tekort aan toerusting soos oorbruggingsdraers belemmer herwinningsoperasies en dienslewering by die eindpunt, weens oponthoude en gure weer. Die vereniging se uitvoerende hoof, Gavin Kelly, het aan die SABC gesê die finansiële en bedryfsgevolge van hierdie vertragings sal eers later die maand of vroeg in Februarie duideliker wees.
Die direkteur van die Family Policy Institute, Errol Naidoo, sê gebroke gesinstrukture is 'n hoofoorsaak van Suid-Afrika se hoë syfer vir tienerswangerskappe. Dit volg op onrusbarende syfers, insluitend 'n 12-jarige wat oor die vakansie geboorte geskenk het en gelei het tot aanklagte van statutêre verkragting. Naidoo het aan die SABC gesê die gebrek aan ʼn vaderfiguur word verbind met verhoogde tienerswangerskappe en skoolverlating. Hy vra vir dringende optrede om hierdie neiging hok te slaan:
