KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi is “not scared of all types of bombs”. So says former police commander Willem Els, who is now with the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) as Senior Training Coordinator in the ENACT organised crime programme. Els tells BizNews that the “bomb” dropped by the General last Sunday took “tremendous courage”. Els, who trained the General in Bomb Disposal, described him as a”disciplined officer, a straight talker, a straight shooter, a straight walking” officer who is doing “the right thing as a policeman in his heart, in his actions…”, stressing: “He's a policeman in heart and down to the bone.” Apart from training the General, Els also worked with him on s number of foreign missions, and the two even had to “hot extract” former President Thabo Mbeki and then Foreign Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma from a coup in Haiti. They also worked together in Mozambique “where we lifted arms caches and destroyed huge, huge numbers of arms and munitions”, as well as in Equatorial Guinea in preparation of an African Union Summit. Els warns that it would “hurt” President Cyril Ramaphosa “very much” if he deals with the general's allegations of police-underworld links by using the “old playbook that the ANC (African National Congress) has been using ever since they came to power”. As for threats that black and white citizens could even riot together if the KZN general is not treated right, Els notes there are people who say “we might see a repeat of 2021 if people feel that they're not being listened to…”
President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected to address South Africa this evening regarding the recent allegations levelled against political and South African Police Service leadership by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. In a media briefing last Sunday Mkhwanazi made the allegations against police minister Senzo Mchunu, his close associate Brown Mogotsi and Deputy National Commissioner for Crime Detection, Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya. He accused the officials of ties to crime syndicates , alleged interference in police operations, including the disbanding of a task team investigating political killings. In response , the presidency released a statement on Friday saying President Cyril Ramaphosa has been seized with this matter and following various consultations, he will take the nation into his confidence. Security experts say these accusations should be thoroughly investigated as they could erode public confidence in South Africa's police. To discuss how the president should act in this matter and whether he can restore trust in law enforcement Bongiwe Zwane spoke to Security analyst and former SA Interpol Crime Ambassador, Andy Mashaile and Dr. Levy Ndou, a political analyst

Is daar 'n middeweg? Gee my vyf minute.

In today's BizNews Briefing, Cyril Ramaphosa lashes out at Donald Trump over BRICS trade threats; economist Dawie Roodt unpacks the bleak outlook for South Africa's growth; the DA slams the Public Investment Corporation as corrupt; Capitec CEO Gerrie Fourie questions official unemployment stats; and Canada reveals sweeping new energy reforms. Plus, JP Morgan's top economist forecasts no Fed rate cuts before year-end.
The Democratic Alliance says lying to parliament is a serious criminal offense and anyone found wanting should face the full might of the law. This as party deputy chief whip, Baxolile Nodada held a media briefing a short while ago outside the Cape Town police station ahead of laying criminal charges against Police Minister, Senzo Mchunu. Mchunu is alleged to have lied to parliament about knowing Brown Mogotsi. Mogotsi has been implicated in alleged political interference in police operations by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. Mkhwanazi has also accused Mchunu and other senior officials of colluding with a criminal syndicate linked to drug cartels and politically connected figures. The DA's Nodada says if President Cyril Ramaphosa will not act on Minister Mchunu, they will. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to SABC reporter, Fanele Mhlongo
As US President Donald Trump sends final notice to the South African government that he will impose a 30% tariff on its exports to the US on August 1, an Afrikaner delegation to the US, fronted by Freedom Front Plus leader Corne Mulder, has returned with a short list of points it says were given to them by senior White House officials when they met last week. "They really want to trade with us,” Mulder tells Peter Bruce in this edition of Podcasts from the Edge. "But the Trump administration feels very strongly about these political hurdles that need to get out of the way.” The four principles — that the ANC denounce the singing of Kill the Boer, that all expropriation of property is fairly compensated, that all US investment into South Africa be free of BEE regulations and that farm attacks be classified as a priority crime — are, for the most part, almost impossible to comply with. But then again President Cyril Ramaphosa has nothing substantial on the table which which to beat back the Trump tariff assault. Still, he has wriggled his way out of tougher puzzles than the one the Afrikaners returned from Washington with. Would he consider even trying?
Minister of Agriculture John Steenhuisen speaks to Lester Kiewit about the looming 30% tariff on South African exports to the U.S., recently announced by President Donald Trump and set to take effect on 1 August 2025. Steenhuisen warns the tariff could cripple local agriculture - impacting citrus, wine, grapes, nuts and more - and severely harm the economy and jobs. He also believes it signals the unofficial end of AGOA, the trade agreement that has long granted South Africa duty-free access to U.S. markets. While President Ramaphosa has called for continued negotiations and challenged the basis of the tariff, Steenhuisen says urgent economic reforms are now essential to soften the blow and build long-term resilience. Defend Our Democracy is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to address the nation following damning revelations by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. Mkhwanazi has accused Minister Mchunu and senior SAPS officials of meddling in police operations. The movement has also called a full, independent judicial commission of inquiry into the criminal capture of the criminal justice and security services. Elvis Presslin spoke to Defend Our Democracy Executive Director, Naledi Kuali
There has been a swell of public and Parliamentary party political support for KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi after he made explosive allegations against Police Minister Senzo Mchunu and Deputy National Commissioner Shadrack Sibiya. In this interview with BizNews, Democratic Alliance (DA) spokesperson on Police, Ian Cameron says: “..all the political parties are at one that they must come to Parliament to account…I would find it very shocking that a provincial commissioner like General Mkhwanazi would take the risk, both physical and in terms of his job, his entire career, would take the risk that he took yesterday if he didn't have something to back it up with”. Cameron - who once had high hopes for the new Police Minister - adds: “I can't defend the Minister in any way. He hasn't answered substantially to any significant corruption matters that were reported to him by the committee, by myself as well.” As for the response from President Cyril Ramaphosa, Cameron says: “The President (stated) that he would give urgent attention to the matter and that it is a matter of national security. And I agree, it definitely is…. It comes back to one, the President, it comes back to the Minister of Police and to the National Commissioner of Police. Those three people should be held accountable for the disaster that we're currently in. “
In today's BizNews Briefing, Cyril Ramaphosa vows the national dialogue will proceed without the DA, as John Steenhuisen hits back at Thabo Mbeki's criticism. Deputy President Paul Mashatile highlights tensions threatening the GNU's stability, while Trump's looming tariffs send shockwaves through South Africa's citrus industry. Plus, Bloomberg questions whether BRICS can fill the global void left by a retreating America.
In the latest Sunday Show on BizNews, Neil De Beer, the President of the United Independent Movement, and journalist Chris Steyn talk about the latest political drama. De Beer charges that South Africa is in pseudo undercover dictatorship - despite the African National Congress (ANC) being “in ICU”. He comments on all the options ranging from a Vote of No Confidence in President Cyril Ramaphosa to Democratic Alliance (DA) Federal Chair Helen Zille dropping either the nuclear bomb or atom bomb “which she says she holds”. He weighs the strengths of the factions in the ANC and says, in the last NEC, there was such a stand-off between President Cyril Ramaphosa and SG Fikile Mbalula over the party staying in the GNU that rumour has it that the president actually got up and left. Meanwhile, word on the street has it that Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is losing popularity. As for future elections, De Beer warns: “The ANC has an attitude with its gatherings, its giving of Kentucky, its giving of the T-shirt and the cap, and it wins those logistics every time. And until the DA and all of us don't get it that we've got to fight fire with fire, we will never get that power change in this country.” Turning to “murder by power', De Beer laments the assassination of the Ekhurhuleni Audit Chief, as well as the alleged involvement of Special Forces soldiers in a “hitsquad unit to kidnap and take people out”.

President Donald Trump has recently criticized the ANC-led government of South Africa for what he says are state-sanctioned, racist policies that have been endangering white farmers. In this episode, I sit down with South African businessman and entrepreneur Robert Hersov to get a read on what's happening in the country. What is the real story surrounding white farmers in South Africa today? What role have Iran and Russia played in the region? And what can we expect from U.S.-South Africa relations moving forward, after the confrontational meeting between Trump and President Cyril Ramaphosa last month?“In South Africa, we have two farm attacks a day, two murders of farmers a week. And of those farm murders, 20 percent of them involve rape and torture,” says Hersov.“Cyril Ramaphosa went back to South Africa and proclaimed his meeting as a huge victory,” says Hersov. “I think America is about to unleash serious punishments—not on South Africa, but on the leaders.”Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.
Dave Rubin of “The Rubin Report” talks to Ernst Roets about South Africa's growing racial tensions; the government's push for land expropriation without compensation; the global reaction to chants like “kill the Boer”; the role of media and leaders like Donald Trump in bringing attention to South Africa; the failures of the centralized government of the African National Congress under Cyril Ramaphosa; the case for decentralization and self-governance for diverse communities; the need to protect property rights and civil liberties; and much more. #RubinReport #SouthAfrica #southafricapolitics #africannationalcongress #southafricans #expropriation #ErnstRoets #daverubin
