When I married into the British Aristocracy it was the start of a wonderfully exciting journey, if not, a little daunting. I became a Viscountess – and for an American girl from a small town outside Chicago, that was quite a shock. I’m Julie Montagu, otherwise known as Viscountess Hinchingbrooke and I live with my husband, Luke – heir to the Earl of Sandwich - and our family at Mapperton House in Southwest England.  Mapperton is a glorious sandstone house dating back to the 1540’s. It is known as Britain’s Finest Manor House and is filled with wonderful treasures collected by Luke’s ancestors.  Living in a place like this is a joy, but also a challenge and every day we’re aware that we are preserving a very special part of Britain’s heritage.  Mapperton has opened up an extraordinary new world for me and I can’t wait to share it with you all – so if you love castles and manors and stately homes as much as I do, please join me as I head off to some of Britains most spectacular historic homes … On these trips, I’ll be meeting other owners who live and manage these large houses and estates as well as some of the fantastic people who work there too.  With them I’ll be exploring the history, the landscapes, the innovations of generations past and present.  I’ll be sure to roll up my sleeves and help with a few jobs along the way. So please join this American Viscountess as I journey into the countryside in search of some of Britain’s Finest Historic Houses.

Athelhampton House in Dorset is the focus of this NEW episode of historic house visits here on the American Viscountess channel. Living in and maintaining these homes is both a wonderful privilege and an enormous challenge. And one of the greatest tasks every house owner faces is heating a centuries old building in a sustainable and economical way. Giles Keating at Athelhampton has faced this challenge in a totally pioneering and ingenious way!Join me as I visit Athelhampton House - the first solar powered Manor House in England. To learn more about Athelhampton: https://www.athelhampton.com Please support the production of American Viscountess and in particular our high production quality of the Historic Houses by becoming a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/americanviscountessHere you'll received all vlogs and Historic House episodes early and ad-free plus behind-the-scenes videos, American Viscountess merchandise and much more! In this episode, I'm visiting Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu estate – just a short distance from Palace House, Beulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum. The first Earl of Sandwich, the branch of the Montagu family which I married into, is known worldwide because he was head of the Admiralty and brought King Charles II back from exile. But it's now wonderful for me to visit Beaulieu and discover the rich maritime links of another branch of the Montagu family. I'll be meeting with the Hon. Mary Montagu-Scott who has a lifelong passion for the maritime history of Beaulieu and is a keen sailor. Mary shows me the replica timber framed shipwrights workshop which she masterminded. And my husband Luke and I will be cheering on our 17 year old son, William as he and Mary set sail on the Beaulieu river. To find out more about Palace House, Beaulieu: https://www.beaulieu.co.ukPlease support the production of American Viscountess and in particular our high production quality of the Historic Houses by becoming a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/americanviscountessHere you'll received all vlogs and Historic House episodes early and ad-free plus behind-the-scenes videos, American Viscountess merchandise and much more! Not only is Beaulieu home to the National Motor Museum, but also to the extraordinary ruins of Beaulieu Abbey, which date back to the foundation of the monastery here in the thirteenth century. The more I visit historic houses around Britain, the more I realise how many of them have monastic roots. In this episode, Lord Montagu guides me around some of the surviving buildings and shows me the exquisite wall hangings, stitched by his mother, which chart the history of the abbey. I also explore a hidden part of the Beaulieu estate where the well used by the monks still survives today. And I end my visit at the newly restored ice house – a glimpse back to the days when historic houses functioned more like life in the tv series, Downton Abbey. In a new series of films, I explore the historic home of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. In 1952, Beaulieu was one of the first historic houses in Britain to open it's doors to the public - and with the family passion for the motor car at its heart, interest soon grew and the National Motor Museum was born. Today, the collection includes 285 vehicles and thousands of objects relating to the history of motoring. A highlight for me was a visit to the workshops of the museum - where I was able to have a peek under the bonnet of one of the cars that launched the museum - a 1903 De Dion Bouton ... be sure to watch to see what happened when I got behind the wheel! In the final instalment of my visit to Deene Park, I get stuck in and see all that goes on in preparing for a big wedding by the lake - one of three wedding venues on the estate. These historic houses rely on visitor income, the tours, the events, but weddings are a huge part of that income – which all helps with the restoration and repair, to preserve this part of Britain's heritage. I'll be exploring the beautiful gardens with Charlotte and Robert Brudenell – and seeing how Charlotte has created her own signature rose garden. With some polishing of silver and setting the table for our farewell dinner party – this visit to Deene Park has been a joy from start to finish. To find out more about Deene Park: https://www.deenepark.comPlease support the production of American Viscountess and in particular our high production quality of the Historic Houses by becoming a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/americanviscountessHere you'll received all vlogs and Historic House episodes early and ad-free plus behind-the-scenes videos, American Viscountess merchandise and much more! In the final instalment of my current visit to Pitchford Hall in Shropshire, I explore the vast attics and see a hidden structural treasure from Pitchfords medieval past. Julie is visiting a Pitchford Hall in Shropshire, close to the border with Wales. Like many historic homes, Pitchford has enjoyed visits from the Royal family over the years. In the autumn of 1832, Queen Victoria - then a 13 year old Princess - stayed at Pitchford, writing in her diaries that she enjoyed visiting the old diary, playing the harp and going up to the little house in the tree. Julie follows in Victoria's footsteps, taking tea in the Tree House and then enjoying a cold water dip in the Victorian plunge pool out on the estate. Please support the production of American Viscountess by becoming a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/americanviscountess. In this latest instalment of American Viscountess, Julie tackles the never-ending task of restoring the lime plaster panels at Pitchford Hall, one of England's finest Elizabethan half-timbered houses. In this fourth instalment of the Hinchingbrooke series on American Viscountess, Julie, with her father in law, the 11th Earl of Sandwich and his sister, Lady Kate Hunloke are venturing outside in a gale of wind to explore how the immediate grounds of the house have changed since the time when the Montagu family lived here. Then in the warmth of the library, the trio discuss the stunning stained glass windows which show generations of Montagu heraldry and how the family has adapted to the loss of the house in the mid-twentieth century.
During my visit to the former Montagu family home, Hinchingbrooke House in Cambridgeshire, I join my father in law, John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich and one of his sisters, Lady Kate Hunloke to explore the upper floors of the house. Here, they find the nursery where they spent many hours as children and the family bedrooms with views which once stretched out across meadows and fields. Hearing the memories and childhood stories has a powerful effect on me, who finds the experience intensely emotional. Now a school, the house has been transformed, but in this intensely emotional visit, Julie imagines how the house once was as she hears some of her father-in-laws childhood memories of living at Hinchingbrooke in the 1940s and early 1950s. In a very special series of films - I go in search of the lost family ancestral home - Hinchingbrooke House in Cambridgeshire, in the East of England. As Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, I am fascinated by the history of house - from its monastic roots to royal visits and nearly 350 years of Montagu family history. After the Second World War, like so many other historic homes, the upkeep of the building was too great and our family had to leave Hinchingbrooke. In this first episode, my father-in-law, the 11th Earl of Sandwich revisits his early childhood at Hinchingbrooke, showing me some of the photographic archive and rare family films of life there in the mid-twentieth century.
