Geoff and Rory are joined by Lord Montagu of Beaulieu and his nephew, Ben Montagu-Scott, for a fascinating episode on the extraordinary and storied history of Beaulieu Palace House in the New Forest, Hampshire.Originally the 13th-century gatehouse to a medieval abbey, Beaulieu Palace House is an unusual example of Scots Baronial architecture in southern England (see our episode on Scots Baronial with Dr Ralph St Clair Wade). Owned by the Montagu family since the Dissolution of the Monasteries under King Henry VIII, this podcast traces the transformation of Beaulieu through centuries of architectural change, royal visits, decline and ultimate resurrection begun under the pioneering stewardship of the current Lord Montagu's father, whose seminal book 'The Gilt and the Gingerbread (or how to live in a stately home and make money)'  gives this podcast episode its title. With lively anecdotes and insights, you will be drawn into a world where medieval roots meet modern comforts, where traditional farming meets cutting edge tourism... and where a public attraction meets a family home.

In this episode, I sit down with the extraordinary Pearly Montagu—an intuitive healer whose work is reshaping how we view biology, trauma, and transformation. After a near-death experience rewired her understanding of health, Pearly awakened with a rare gift: the ability to see emotional and physical pain as vivid color and structure within the body. Her journey from chronic pain to powerful practitioner is nothing short of alchemical. We dive into what it means to heal beyond the limitations of Western medicine, how energy moves through the body, and why joy, gratitude, and intention might be the most powerful medicine of all. Pearly's story is full of miracles, from releasing decades-old pain to working with legal teams and CEOs by simply “dropping into the field.” This episode will stretch your mind, soften your heart, and leave you questioning what's truly possible in healing.HIGHLIGHTS[2:22] Morning rituals: tapping, red light, cold plunges, and guided audio medicine[7:35] Denzel, Steve Jobs, and the power of “failure” stories to fuel transformation[10:17] The accident that cracked Pearly open—and led to seven years of deep healing[15:06] From healing her own body to unlocking the ability to see and shift pain[21:37] Life on a Greek island: building a healing temple, finding community, and aging differently[23:47] Freddie's session with Pearly: joy, color, and a 100 sleep score[29:34] Energetic hygiene and how healers protect their field[34:48] Reprogramming the subconscious mind with gratitude and prayer[41:52] Biohacking vs. intention: is your tool serving your truth?[53:13] Working with trauma that lives in the space between the cells[59:17] -Manifestation, neural pathways, and how Pearly calls in miraclesPODCAST SPECIAL OFFER:Limited Special 40% offer for your listeners for my micro energetic surgery sessions (normally $650) but $300 especially for your communityLink here https://calendly.com/pearlyconnection/online-pearly-healing-energy-medecine-session-clone-1CONNECT WITH PEARLY: Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/a.pearly.way.of.life/Website: https://www.manderley.org/contactConcierge Program: manderleyconcierge.orgUPGRADE YOUR WELLNESSSilver Biotics Wound Healing Gel: https://bit.ly/3JnxyDD (30% off)(Use Code: BEAUTIFULLYBROKEN for Discount)Saga Bands: https://ca.saga.fitness/?ref=titvyccmCode: beautifullybrokenStemRegen: https://www.stemregen.co/products/stemregen?_ef_transaction_id=&oid=1&affid=52Code: beautifullybrokenLightPathLED https://lightpathled.pxf.io/c/3438432/2059835/25794Code: beautifullybroken CONNECT WITH FREDDIE Check out my website and store: (http://www.beautifullybroken.world) Instagram: (https://www.instagram.com/beautifullybroken.world/) YouTube: (https://www.youtube.com/@BeautifullyBrokenWorld)

Ever wondered what the creative process is behind the films, TV shows and theatre productions you watch? Well, Crew Chats is a podcast that goes behind the scenes and speaks to the crew that help make these productions. One of my favourite shows on television is Call the Midwife, especially at this time of year. I have always been curious about the babies on set, whether they are real or prosthetic, how old they are, how they cry on cue and more. So I was incredibly excited to speak to Sarita Montagu, who is midwife consultant on the show as well as other productions. We discussed how Sarita became a midwife, which led to her work as a midwife consultant for TV, what an average day on set looks like, the intricacies of working with new born babies, parents and actors and more. Also please excuse my voice during the conversation, I was under the weather at the time of recording. Reccomendations: -Out of Africa -Hamnet (book) -Spiritual Midwifery(book)

Today's episode is the last of our At The Beach series, recorded live from the Montagu Bathing Pavilion, known by the regulars as the GASA Bathing Pavilion. Christine Doolan celebrated National Day at the Pavilion, and took advantage of the earlier opening time by decorating the space with red and white. By all accounts there was a lovely community atmosphere. The Supported Needs and Disabilities Office work hard to make sure that our most popular bathing sports are accessible to all. Jenny Victory told us what changes have been made this summer. At yesterday's National Day Rally the Chief Minister read out a letter from King Charles III, in which His Majesty commended Gibraltar on its conservation efforts. Chief Executive of the Department of the Environment Stephen Warr spoke to us about his reaction to the King's warm words. Kenneth Avellano is considered by regulars as the unofficial boss of the Pavilion. He loves the convenience of the place and how family friendly it is. He described how he goes looking for starfish and other creatures in the area with his grandchildren. And, Denise Bossino interrupted her lunch to tell us how much she loves the Pavilion, and goes there every day regardless of the weather! She wishes that bathers would be allowed to stay later than 8pm. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This is the period of the utilitarian liberal, not of the democrat, it's 1850 and in the Cape, a newly ninted constitution had been drafted by the attorney general, William Porter. This was based on a nonracial qualified franchise - all adult males who had occupied property worth at least twenty five pounds for a year were eligible to vote. Porter had toiled on the draft of this document for the also newly minted Governor, Sir Harry Smith, who sent it to London. Porter later in 1850 had a complete change of heart as utilitarian liberals tend to do, he denounced the option of univesal suffrage — at least for men of all colours — as threatening to the colony with its in his words, “communism, socialisms, and red republicanism which had caused so much mischief in France….” There had been an attempted major communist revolution in France in 1848, which spilled over into other parts of western Europe including the land that would become known as Germany. This horrified utilitarians everywhere, no less so in the Cape Colony. As the ship bearing Smith's new constitution headed north, another was heading south and crossed each other somewhere out there on the wild untamed ocean. It was a dispatch from Colonial Secretary Earl Grey who proposed sending Irish convicts to the Cape. Smith announced this proposal to the horrified residents of Cape Town and immediately aroused a storm of agitation against the Governor. The settlers had been considering representative government for some time and this suggestion of Irish convicts arriving backfired — driving many more of the moderate thinkers into the arms of those who were agitating for some form of independent governance. The colonists regarded the Irish as a threat to their respectability and citizens used the concept as a weapon to attaack the oligarchy that ran the Cape at the time. It was a legislative council, nominated by Governors not elected by the people so it had been tainted constantly by allegations of corruption, nepotism, and a host of other maladies associated with power wielded too long by men who were mostly too greedy. The convicts duly arrived on a ship called Neptune, but they were refused entry to Cape Town, and the men sat in chains in Simon's Bay for five months. Eventually in 1850 the ship was ordered to sail away. One of the main antagonists in this crazy story was a man called John Montagu. He had been alarmed by how the Irish convict idea had radicalised even his mild-mannered friends, and so he demanded that Smith reimpose some kind of authority and stop this movement towards representative government. Montagu argued that the whole idea was anti-English, not what the British should be supporting, so Smith delayed the implementation. But what was going on was very very interesting. The hullabaloo had revealed two very distinct political movements inside the Cape. One was conservative, pro-English and pro-British government, led by Montagu, joined by the big merchants of Cape Town. They were also joined by the Eastern Cape settlers led by their flag bearer, Grahamstown Journal Editor and land speculator Robert Godlonton. Another powerful figure joined this conservative echelon, and that was the newly arrived Anglican Bishop, Robert Gray. A newspaper called the Cape Monitor was launched in October 1850 by these conservatives. The second political movement were the radicals, both British and Afrikaner, led by John Fairbairn, Christoffel Brand, Francis William Reitz and Andries Stockenstrom. They regarded the conservatives as a corrupt bunch of nepotists, an oligarchy, but they were divided by what to do about frontier policy. Fairbairn used his newspaper the South African Advertiser to defend the rights of blacks, while Brand preferred to defend the rights of the Dutch descendents against the oppression of old-English money elites. Stockenstrom had his own varied approach to both.

At the end of the First World War, a devastating worldwide flu pandemic killed perhaps as many as 50-100 million around the globe, and even 228,000 in Britain. That was a cruel addition to the 880,000 lost to the war itself. Despite that blow, Lloyd George's government did what it could to realise its objective of making Britain a ‘land fit for heroes'. That meant moving on with the programme of social reforms he'd already launched before the war. He made considerable progress in health, education, pensions and housing. However, Lloyd George was a Liberal Prime Minister in a Tory-dominated government. That imposed serious limitations on how far he could take a radical programme. This was made worse by the economic downturn that hit the world economy in 1920. The Conservatives, never very keen on all this social radicalism, became increasingly concerned about Lloyd George when economic conditions it more difficult than ever to finance the kind of public spending that his reforms required. The Prime Minister, coming under growing pressure from his Conservative partners, tried to placate them by dumping a Minister most associated with this high spending, even though he was an important ally to him. Christopher Addison, perhaps the most distinguished medic ever to become a Member of the British Parliament, was driven from his position and soon afterwards resigned. Something similar happened with Edwin Montagu who, as Secretary of State for India, had begun to introduce a programme of political reform there. Confused and far too limited, it was still a well-intentioned initiative, hated by the arch-imperialists, such as the Conservative MPs who had backed General Dyer, the man responsible for the Amritsar massacre. Eventually, Montagu too had to go. The trouble was that throwing raw allies to the Tory so-called diehards in this way didn't blunt their growing opposition to him. It did, however, deprive him of much-needed support. Illustration: Christopher Addison in 18917, by Walter Stoneman, National Portrait Gallery x67932 (left), and Edwin Montagu, public domain. Triumph and Illusion (Faber & Faber, 2023) is the final volume of Jonathan Sumption's epic history of the Hundred Years War. It tells the story of the collapse of the English dream of conquest from the opening years of the reign of Henry VI, when the battles of Cravant and Verneuil consolidated their control of most of northern France, until the loss of all their continental dominions except Calais thirty years later. This sudden reversal of fortune was a seminal event in the history of the two principal nation-states of western Europe. It brought an end to four centuries of the English dynasty's presence in France, separating two countries whose fortunes had once been closely intertwined. It created a new sense of national identity in both countries. The legacy of these events would influence their divergent fortunes for centuries to come. Behind the clash of arms stood some of the most remarkable personalities of the age: the Duke of Bedford, the English Regent who ruled much of France from Paris and Rouen; Charles VII of France, underrated in both countries, who patiently rebuilt his kingdom after the disasters of his early years; the captains who populate the pages of Shakespeare - Fastolf, Montagu, Talbot, Dunois and, above all, the extraordinary figure of Joan of Arc who changed the course of the war in a few weeks at the age of seventeen. Jonathan, Lord Sumption is the author of the justly acclaimed, five volume history of the Hundred Years' War. In his professional life, he served for six years as a Justice of the British Supreme Court. He is a graduate of Eton & Oxford. Charles Coutinho, PH. The...shofar shall sound? It wasn't the cylindrical thing of beauty we call a trumpet today that the great apostle was speaking of in his famous line to the church in Corinth. It was most likely a shofar, a horn made from the horn of a ram, or a goat, or an antelope, or a kudu. Really anything but a bull, because of a notorious incident involving a golden calf. Today I replay an interview I played on the podcast during the early days of the show in 2016 featuring the author of a quite authoritative book on the shofar (see link below). In this fourth instalment of the Hinchingbrooke series on American Viscountess, Julie, with her father in law, the 11th Earl of Sandwich and his sister, Lady Kate Hunloke are venturing outside in a gale of wind to explore how the immediate grounds of the house have changed since the time when the Montagu family lived here. Then in the warmth of the library, the trio discuss the stunning stained glass windows which show generations of Montagu heraldry and how the family has adapted to the loss of the house in the mid-twentieth century.

During my visit to the former Montagu family home, Hinchingbrooke House in Cambridgeshire, I join my father in law, John Montagu, the 11th Earl of Sandwich and one of his sisters, Lady Kate Hunloke to explore the upper floors of the house. Here, they find the nursery where they spent many hours as children and the family bedrooms with views which once stretched out across meadows and fields. Hearing the memories and childhood stories has a powerful effect on me, who finds the experience intensely emotional. In this episode we respond to a listener question about our top 5 examples of scientific racism. Unfortunately, in the five years of this podcast, we've only discussed two of these people/topics, so we've got a lot of work to do to get up to speed. Here are some resources for our examples. In a very special series of films - I go in search of the lost family ancestral home - Hinchingbrooke House in Cambridgeshire, in the East of England. As Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, I am fascinated by the history of house - from its monastic roots to royal visits and nearly 350 years of Montagu family history. After the Second World War, like so many other historic homes, the upkeep of the building was too great and our family had to leave Hinchingbrooke.  In this first episode, my father-in-law, the 11th Earl of Sandwich revisits his early childhood at Hinchingbrooke, showing me some of the photographic archive and rare family films of life there in the mid-twentieth century.
