Spend a bookish weekend with us in a country manor house! For centuries, nobles and ne'er-do-wells have gathered on country estates for a bit of leisure, a lot of sumptuous food, sparkling conversation, and general good cheer. You're invited to join us at Trevor Hall for a modern take on the traditional manor house weekend. Together, we'll make ourselves at home in this historic Georgian mansion surrounded by the picturesque North Wales countryside. We'll talk about books, share gourmet meals in the Great Hall, play parlor games, ramble in the Welsh hills, listen to stories by candlelight, and be dazzled by an illusionist from London. Our weekend begins in Manchester, England — a UNESCO City of Literature. We'll take over a boutique hotel in the city center where we'll enjoy an evening pub meetup, spend the night, and start our morning with a breakfast fry-up. Then we're off to the Elizabeth Gaskell House for a private tour of the Victorian villa where the author wrote her classic novel ‘North and South' (and entertained literary friends like Charlotte Brontë and Charles Dickens). After a restorative tea-and-cake break, we'll ride together via private motor coach — just over an hour — through the rugged countryside to Llangollen, a charming historic town on the River Dee in North Wales. Our destination: Trevor Hall. The Hall is a Georgian mansion on a wooded hilltop overlooking green slopes dotted with sheep and horses. After a tour of the house and gardens, we'll ease into country living in the Hall's luxurious (and tastefully eclectic) rooms. With literary activities, entertainment, and surprises planned throughout the weekend, you're sure to be delighted — and have plenty of time to connect with old and new bookish friends. For complete details about the weekend and lots of photos, visit strongsenseofplace.com/weekend. For early access to tickets for a Readers' Weekend at Trevor Hall, join our Patreon. December 2024 For this year's festive episode, we once again put the word out to our listeners: what baffles you about Bletchley Park, and what myths and misconceptions would you like our resident Historians to investigate and interrogate? Bletchley Park's Head of Content, Erica Munro, is asking the questions, with Research Historian Dr David Kenyon and Research Officer Dr Thomas Cheetham fielding queries on uncracked ciphers, captured codes, cribbing, declassification … and, of course, Christmas. Many thanks to Dr Ben Thomson for voicing our archival documents. Image: ©Bletchley Park Trust 2024. In this episode of the Valley Today, host Janet Michael is joined by Kristen Laise, the Executive Director at Belle Grove Plantation, and Paige Ulevich, the Festivals Coordinator. They discuss the upcoming fifth annual Kris Kringle Market taking place at Belle Grove on November 23rd and 24th from 10 AM to 4 PM. Kristen talks about the origins of the Kris Kringle Market, which started during the difficult year of 2020 to support local businesses. Paige emphasizes the wide variety of vendors and activities available, noting that this year's event will feature over 100 vendors selling handmade items, food gifts, and more. Kristen and Paige highlight many of the exciting offerings at the event, such as food trucks serving bratwursts and pierogis, live performances, workshops, and interactive activities for children. Paige also mentions a new feature for this year – Jamie Lynn Photography's mini portrait sessions on the back steps of the Manor House, which provides a perfect opportunity for holiday photos. The conversation also covers practical advice for visitors, like the availability of free parking, the event's suitability for families, and the necessity of preparing for outdoor activities in cold weather. Kristen points out that the event will be held rain or shine, with indoor activities taking place in the barn. Additionally, the conversation delves into Belle Grove's holiday season plans, including guided and open house-style tours of the Manor House, which will be beautifully decorated by area garden clubs with a theme of 'Christmas in the Valley.' Kristen encourages listeners to visit during the evening hours to enjoy the decorations under twinkle lights, along with live music in the parlor. Listeners are reminded that Kris Kringle Market has free admission and free parking, and they should plan to visit the Manor House for more holiday experiences. We will take you on an audio-tour of the manor house, where the noble family of Pálffy is historically connected with its origins. Later, in the second half of the 20th century, the manor house was briefly used as a barracks and then as a hospital. In 2007, the town of Malacky became the owner of the building and is still working on its renovation.

Gilly Macmillan joins Carol Fitzgerald to talk about her latest thriller, THE MANOR HOUSE. The premise is a fun one as a couple wins the lottery, and they set out to spend their winnings wisely. They first build a beautiful glass house with all the bells and whistles that one might want. It's just brilliant. But mere pages into the book, one of them is found dead in the swimming pool. What happened? Was it foul play, or was it an accident? This is a book with so many twists and turns, and Gilly had lots of fun writing them. Plus, all that tech talk as the house performs as planned (or does not) just adds to the intrigue. Carol and Gilly talk about yoga for a bit. Also, Gilly shares that there is one question that Carol brings up that no one else has asked her about. And it just might surprise you! Margaret and Anton round out their detail discussion with cinematography highlights from Season 1, Episode 2 of Young Royals. While marveling over the true art of so many of the shots in this episode, Margaret loses their mind over a scene that lasts less than thirty seconds, and Anton expands upon the metaphorical parallels between Wilmon's first time holding hands and the horror film chosen for the Manor House's movie night. “at the Manor House in consultation with his two colleagues” [VALL] One of the great bits of fun of scanning the Sherlock Holmes stories is trying to determine the locations for some of the stories. In the case of The Valley of Fear, one of these identifications was made early on by Harold Wilmerding (H.W.) Bell. But his commitment to the Canon would be dashed a decade and a half later by a serendipitous discovery from the pen of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle himself, plus some intrepid footwork by James Montgomery. It's a good thing Alex Murdaugh has plenty of stolen money to throw around because boy, does he need a high-powered legal team! They're currently living the high life at the Eden at Gracefield, a 500-acre wedding venue in Walterboro, South Carolina. This luxurious property is the temporary home of Murdaugh's lead defense attorneys, Dick Harpootlian and Jim Griffin, and their entourage. But why settle for just any old hotel when you can rent out all five homes nestled between lakes and tranquil forests, a little less than eight miles from the Colleton County Courthouse? For a mere $20,475 a week, Murdaugh's legal team is living in the lap of luxury. And don't worry, they were given a discount because of the length of their stay, how generous! Murdaugh is on trial for double murder, accused of gunning down his wife Maggie and son Paul on June 7, 2021, at the family's hunting estate. The prosecution has argued that he committed these heinous crimes to distract from his decade-long financial schemes, including embezzling millions from his law firm and clients. But according to his legal team, Murdaugh is a loving family man who would never do such a thing. While the Walkers who run Eden at Gracefield may not be paying much attention to the trial, it seems everyone else is. The state attorney general's office was even interested in the property, but alas, they were too late. Meanwhile, the state prosecutors and law enforcement agents are staying at a renovated Hampton Inn and Suites, but with over 30 members of the press also staying there, it's not exactly a luxurious experience. Murdaugh's legal team, on the other hand, is living the dream. They have a live-in cook who prepares three meals a day and a magnificent Manor House with crystal chandeliers, an onyx foyer, and a 12-foot kitchen island. And let's not forget the rustic Tobacco Barn, complete with whimsical fairy lights and a comfy bed. Privacy is of utmost importance to Murdaugh's team, so they've requested that the back entrance be locked for their stay. They access the property through a wrought iron gate that leads to an enchanting road lined with live oaks draped in Spanish moss. But the real question is, how is Murdaugh, who claims to be broke, paying for all of this? Harpootlian is a Democratic state senator and Griffin's team's housing tab has already surpassed $60,000. It's a mystery! Sadly, Murdaugh's legal team's stay at Eden at Gracefield will soon come to an end as they have to vacate the property by the end of February for a wedding scheduled the first week of March. Laura Walker, the property's owner, made it clear that she's not going to cancel someone's once-in-a-lifetime experience for Murdaugh and his team. So, it looks like they'll have to find somewhere else to stay. Perhaps they'll join their opposition at the Hampton Inn, where rooms either overlook I-95 or the parking lot and the nightly rate is a staggering $300. From YOUR HOST, AMY MCGEE: While I could go on and on about Hitomi Gilliam & Gregor Lersch — the things they've accomplished, the books they've written, and the competitions they've won — I'll leave the details of their stories to them. I want you to hear it in their words. What I really want to tell you about first is how I met them and how they've each impacted my life not only as a floral professional, but also how they've touched my life personally. It's no accident that I met both Hitomi and Gregor at Hope Flower Farm in Virginia during Chapel Designers workshops hosted by Holly and Evan Chapple. One afternoon while Holly, Hitomi, and I stood in the kitchen of the Manor House at Hope, I was sharing with them about the responsibility I was feeling to address some needs I was seeing in my local community back in Texas. Hitomi and Holly quickly brainstormed as we cooked and cleaned — and had a solution before we were done. They would come to Texas and teach a workshop with all the ticket sales going to meet the needs I'd mentioned. I couldn't believe it, but it happened that fall just as they said it would. During another workshop at Hope, I had the pleasure of meeting and spending time with Gregor Lersch while I was on the workshop team. I'd never seen anyone work like he did. Still haven't! From early in the morning until everyone else had left the workshop barn, Gregor sat on a stool working on intricate mechanics for the following day's class. And when I say mechanics, I mean stunning frameworks that would be used as pieces of art long after the flowers he carefully placed on them had faded and he'd returned home to Germany. Sitting around the breakfast table with Hitomi and Gregor each morning of those workshops was like opening a treasure trove of stories about the history of our profession. They talked about the people they'd met, the places they'd been, and the things they'd seen. Gregor's quick wit kept me on the edge of my seat and the way Hitomi talked about floristry with a deep love made me want to be a better. I like to refer to mornings as ‘Story Time' with Gregor and Hitomi. So, I'm deeply honored and grateful for their voices on today's episode of the Botanical Brouhaha Podcast. Hitomi and Gregor have a deep love for the ‘green professions', as they say, and their desire to see us continue moving forward as we adapt to the very best sustainable practices is obvious when you spend any time with them at all. But, I can honestly say that as knowledgeable, accomplished, and renowned as they are, the way they've impacted me most is with their love of humanity. It's that genuine acceptance and concern for all people that makes them so effective at conveying all the ways our work is important for not only bringing beauty to life's important moments, but also for bringing healing where there's brokenness. So, for all of that, I want to thank Holly Chapple for doing what she does best — connecting people. Today's episode is a little different in that you won't hear us interviewing Hitomi and Gregor. Instead, we asked them to talk directly to you and share their stories, insights, and hopes for floristry. I hope you love it! McKamey Manor is a "haunted house" where guests are tortured, beat up, and nearly drowned, and it has a waitlist of over 20,000 people. In the late 90s and early 2000s, an amateur haunted house enthusiast, Russ McKamey, started hosting "haunts" in his backyard. Over the years he began to attract attention as these haunted house experiences became more and more extreme. By the late 2010s, he started to become nationally known for the fact that McKamey Manor had somehow devolved into an 8 hour torture session where guests consented to being beaten up, drowned, covered in bugs and snakes, and pushed to their psychological breaking point. Clark Ashton Smith Clark Ashton Smith was an American writer born in Long Valley, California in 1893 who died in Pacific Grove, California in 1961, aged 68. They are actually four hundred and twenty eight miles apart which is longer than the whole of England. For comparison I have only made two hundred yards from the place I was born to the place I now live. He lived most of his life in the small town of Auburn, California. He was madly neurotic, agoraphobic and as with Lovecraft, the existential unease he no doubt felt in life, intrudes into his stories, giving them their unsettling quality, I would guess. Because of his nerves, he was educated at home and was intelligent with a fantastic memory and educated himself by reading, including The Encyclopaedia Britannica all volumes cover to cover more than once. He taught himself French and Spanish and translated poetry from those languages, including Baudelaire's The Flowers of Evil. Naturally. Clark was a weird poet and one of the now defunct West Coast Romantics. I can see him playing guitar for Mazzy Star (if he'd been spared). He was one of the ‘big three' authors of Weird Tales, the others being Robert E Howard and H P Lovecraft. As a teen (though in those days I wouldn't have been familiar with that word) I lapped up all three, though I preferred Ashton Smith. There is something more poetic and less rude about his style than either the barbarous, muscle-bound stories of Howard and the off-kilter, prolix and baroque tales of H P. Though, as I say, I read them all, aye. All. We have done an Ashton Smith story before: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fSkA3Hq8qIU (The Maker of Gargoyles). This story: The Nameless Offspring is another tomb story. We seem to have done a run of these recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pSp2_ZPOyA (The Catacomb), https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eC9epxbb-JU (The Secret of The Vault). And previously we did The https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC-kCEb_oTE (Fall of the House of Usher). It was published in Strange Tales in 1932, and in those days publishing in these pulp magazine was the standard process. Many of the writers of pulps purveyed Cosmic Horror. Of course the primary voice here is H P Lovecraft and his taste seems to have stamped itself on his followers and his approval, given them a significant advantage. Lovecraft was a great admirer of Ashton Smith. You will recall that to write a classic story in this period: first set it somewhere obscure either in time or distance from your average reader> Make the weather bad. Have a gothic edifice: a castle, though in this case and old (Cornish from the name) Manor House will do. Have an aged retainer, an obscure history that is not fully discussed, an aristocrat, poor light then you just need a monster and you're on. This tale has it all. And let's face it what Hollywood producers say (though not to me) ‘We want more of the same, but different.” This is what we have. Smith is great with descriptions. I prefer his prose to Lovecraft. IT was the fashion to use obscure words and lots of them, but he does it in a less awkward way than Lovecraft and one that is not as open to parody. The story begins with a little background that makes sense of what is to follow along with a warning that he never foresaw the terrible truth, etc. he goes on a trip and inadvertently comes across the evil Tremoth Hall. Heather Darsie is joined by Brigitte Webster, Experimental Food Historian, to discuss what it's like to run (and own) a Tudor manor home. Brigitte and her husband also run The Tudor and 17th Century Experience: The Tudor and 17th Century Experience is the brainchild of Brigitte Webster. Born in Austria, Brigitte trained, and served as a school teacher for 25 years. Her qualification was in history and cooking, a combination that has finally come together in her career as a culinary historian currently working on a number of publications on international cuisine of the 16th Century. The Tudor and 17th Century Experience is a venture that finally allows her to share her passion for all things Tudor with a wider audience especially now that she and her husband have at last moved into their dream home, an authentic Tudor manor. She is supported in her venture by her husband, Tom who is a long standing history re-enactor, military adviser and owner of an historic firearms company.
