The nu metal revival is alive and well in 2025, so much so, that iconic bands from that era are returning to delight long-term fans, while gaining a whole new audience who have yet to experience them. One such band is Northamptonshire, UK's Defenestration. A five-piece who were active between 1999 – 2004, releasing three studio albums (One Inch God – 2001 / Ray Zero – 2003 / For Us it Ends When We Drown – 2004) and one split EP, (Year of the Slug with Scurge – 2002). Not only that, but they also toured all over the world with the likes of Raging Speedhorn, Napalm Death, Biffy Clyro, The Wildhearts, Skindred, and so many more iconic bands. So popular were they, that they opened the Wembley Arena leg of the 2001 'Tattoo the Planet Tour'. A set of shows that included Cradle of Filth, Static-X, Biohazard, Slayer and Pantera. Twenty years after their last live performance as Defenestration, the original members reunited for a ‘one-off' performance. Supporting Raging Speedhorn, the show was to raise money for record producer Russ Russell who was unable to work due to illness. This would be followed by another benefit gig for Russ Russell later in August 2024, Defenestration's first headline show since 2004. The itch was back, and another set of shows with Raging Speedhorn all but confirmed that there was a desire for Defenestration to return as an active band. Which is where we find ourselves now. Defenestration has reformed, is under new management, and is in the process of solidifying their legacy, while looking to the future too. It's late September. The seasons are turning – but the wheels of Formula 1 have stopped. There is now a three-week pause before racing resumes at the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin, Texas.At Aston Martin's Silverstone headquarters, the cars have made a rare return home. In 2024, the cars travel to 21 countries across five continents - that's a total 127,000 kilometres in air distance. Head of Build and Car Assembly Mark Gray is the man in charge of logistics and caring for Aston Martin's racing cars when they are back at base. Inside the teams' fast-paced factories, there is no respite as his work continues around the clock.This teamwork is essential to the fates and fortunes of the drivers during a grand prix. Formula 1 is a team sport, but it also relies on the performance of just one individual - the driver. McLaren stars Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri reveal the pressures of driving a piece of work that takes hours to create and costs millions of dollars. Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll also share how crucial the team is when it comes to performance and reliability. It's not only the drivers who are feeling the pressure with six races to go in the 2024 season. Victory for Lando Norris at the last race in Singapore – and another podium for Oscar Piastri – saw McLaren stretch their lead in the team standings by 41 points. For the first time, we will hear what a Sprint race sounds like from inside the team. When the closed steelworks in Corby, Northamptonshire, were being cleaned up ahead of redevelopment, trucks ferrying debris away from the site released poisonous dust into the air. Dozens of children born during this time had malformed limbs and other issues leading to a decades-long fight for justice. There are just 10 races left to go in the 2024 Formula 1 season - the longest season in the sport's history with 24 grands prix. In this final phase of the season, both Championships - for the world's best racing driver and team - are still up for grabs. At McLaren headquarters, in the commuter town of Woking just 23 miles outside London, the team is stirring again after the summer shutdown. The historic race team hit form before the summer holidays and has propelled itself into title contention for the first time in over a decade. British star driver Lando Norris and Australian ace Oscar Piastri are raring to go racing again but first they are paying a visit to the team back at base. That's not to say the summer break wasn't without competition. Norris has been playing golf with McLaren's American CEO Zak Brown, with mixed results. Piastri has used the time out of the cockpit to recover from an injury that he sustained on track. Only one of them has been going full throttle during the holidays, and that's the boss - Zak, who travelled to California to get behind the wheel. Meanwhile, in rural Northamptonshire - 80 miles north of McLaren's F1 factory - the Aston Martin team is also returning to work after the summer break. The 2024 season marks the culmination of a radical transformation for the team, which is preparing to unveil the latest phase of its supersize F1 factory. For team principal Mike Krack, the regeneration going on back at base is an opportunity of a lifetime. F1 experts Sarah Holt and Holly Samos visited to get a very behind-the-scenes tour of the new facilities. Aston Martin drivers Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll are also preparing for the next race - the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort. Stroll has been at the factory working on the team's simulator. Alonso, who will reach his 400th Grand Prix start in the next 10 races, is using all his experience to also guide the team forwards. For McLaren, the 2024 season is also one of opportunity. It has been 26 years since the team won the coveted Constructors' Championship but, this season, the team is closing in on champions Red Bull for the crown while Norris is also hunting down Max Verstappen, who leads the Drivers' Championship. Happy reading.Anne Bradstreet was born Anne Dudley in 1612 in Northamptonshire, England. She married Simon Bradstreet, a graduate of Cambridge University, at the age of sixteen. Two years later, Bradstreet, along with her husband and parents, immigrated to the American colonies with the Winthrop Puritan group, and the family settled in Ipswich, Massachusetts. There, Bradstreet and her husband raised eight children, and she became one of the first poets to write English verse in the American colonies. It was during this time that Bradstreet penned many of the poems that would be taken to England by her brother-in-law, purportedly without her knowledge, and published in 1650 under the title The Tenth Muse, Lately Sprung Up in America.The Tenth Muse was the only collection of Bradstreet's poetry to appear during her lifetime. In 1644, the family moved to Andover, Massachusetts, where Bradstreet lived until her death in 1672. In 1678, the first American edition of The Tenth Muse was published posthumously and expanded as Several Poems Compiled with Great Wit and Learning. In this episode we tell the awful story of how the Germans tricked the 1st Northamptonshire's into believing they were surrendering during the Battle of the Aisne in September 1914. But it was a trap and we discover how the Germans then machine gunned them in a rare example of this sort of incident. We also learn about the German born man in Northampton who was run out of town after this incident. And we have a report from Loos where 2 British soldiers were reburied in the new Cemetery Extension last week.

This week's Local Legends episode is a very special conversation in which Martin gathers round the Three Ravens campfire with Tim Laycock, an inspirational, multi-talented person and a true champion for the county of Dorset.Author of books including Dorset Folk Tales, writing is just the tip of the iceberg with Tim, who came to the attentions of many in the British folk community through his work as part of Magic Lantern with the one and only Taffy Thomas. Music is absolutely key to Tim's life. He is a tremendous singer and multi-instrumentalist, and, like a crafty folk song magpie, he has been finding stories and songs, and story-songs, and bringing them out and into the light across his many years of performance. With a rich catalogue of wonderful recordings available as CDs and through streaming services, his talents stretch yet further, including into theatre, where he has worked with the likes of the National Theatre, Shakespeare's Globe, Festival Theatre Chichester, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, and many others.He has written ten plays, too, some award-winning, and has had a long and successful career as a performer and director. Being a Dorset man, it's perhaps necessary that Thomas Hardy would feature in that mix, and Tim is also the Artistic Director of the New Thomas Hardy Players, while also performing Hardy's poetry and works as part of his work as a storyteller and entertainer.On top of which, he is an extremely friendly and knowledgeable chap, so, please settle in and get comfortable for one of the richest, most interesting conversations we've had for Local Legends so far. Butterfly numbers in the UK appear to be at the lowest on record after a wet spring and summer dampened their chances of mating. This comes on top of a long and worrying trend of decline. He rose to fame when his ‘Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery' was published in 1820. His language preserves many local dialect words in a mixture of classical forms and heart-felt love of country life and nature. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus Imprisoned Chinese leaders face serious illnesses Since two leaders of the Ganquan Church in Hefei, Anhui Province in China were arrested last fall, their wives and members of their church family have pleaded for their release. Those pleas have grown more urgent after the two leaders developed serious health problems while in prison, reports International Christian Concern. In November 2023, Communist authorities detained Pastor Zhou Songlin, Elder Ding Zhongfu, and 14 other members of the house church. Pastor Zhou and Elder Ding are the only church members who remain in prison.  Pastor Zhou is suffering from an unspecified “serious illness” that his doctors say cannot be properly treated while he is incarcerated. And Elder Ding is experiencing high blood pressure, chest pain, dizziness, and insomnia.  The Ganquan Church is an underground church that refuses to come under the state-controlled Three-Self Patriotic Movement which is China's only legal church. As a result, Ganquan is considered illegal and cannot purchase property. That's why Pastor Zhou and Elder Ding used church funds to purchase two properties in their own names to secure property for worship and other church activities. Biden gets pushback over claim “We leave no one behind.” President Joe Biden faced a wave of pushback from GOP lawmakers in response to a post on the @POTUS X account that said, "On my watch, when we make promises, we keep them. And we leave no one behind." Blaze.com reports that multiple Republicans challenged the president's claim. Rep. Lisa McClain of Michigan tweeted, "Afghanistan. Israel. Haiti. All Joe Biden does is leave Americans behind," And Rep. Derrick Van Orden of Wisconsin tweeted, "This would be hilarious if it was not tragic. Biden has abandoned Americans around the world and wants you to forget about them. I never will. Remember in November." Stephanie Clifford took stand in Trump's “hush money” trial Last Tuesday, Stormy Daniels, a disreputable actress whose real name is Stephanie Clifford,  took the stand in the so-called “hush money” trial of former President Donald Trump, reports The Epoch Times.  She claimed that she had a tryst with Trump in 2006 at which time he had been married to his third wife, Melania, since January 22, 2005. NBC News noted that Clifford, who was 27 at the time, boosted her credibility by describing the flooring of the hotel suite. Trump has categorically denied the encounter ever took place. Prosecutors say that President Trump's former lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid $130,000 to Clifford during the 2016 campaign in a bid to buy her silence about the alleged affair. At issue is the nature of the payments. They have argued that the payments should have been marked as campaign-related expenses since her silence helped assure his election. The former president has pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records in the case. He has argued that the trial is merely an attempt to keep him off the 2024 campaign trail. In Clifford's testimony, she recalled that the former president told her in the hotel room that she “should go on his television show,” referring to the “Celebrity Apprentice” program that he hosted and starred in. She claimed she asked him. “What if I lose on the first episode?” She also made claims about visiting Trump to break the Seventh Commandment at his hotel in Lake Tahoe, California, during a golf tournament. Exodus 20:17 says, “You shall not commit adultery.” Top 10 most dangerous states While the violent crime rate in America fell for two years in a row after an increase in 2020, property crime – which covers infractions such as vehicle theft and burglary – appeared to increase in 2022 for the first time in two decades. The top 10 most dangerous states include New Mexico, Louisiana, Colorado, Arkansas, Washington, Tennessee, Alaska, Oregon, California, and Missouri. 16-year-old anti-Israel protestor arrested for vandalizing NYC statues An anti-Israel, pro-Hamas teen protester, accused of shamefully vandalizing a hallowed World War 1 memorial in Central Park, New York last Monday, was ratted out by his own father for his despicable actions, reports the New York Post. The 16-year-old suspect, who was videotaped and photographed spray painting graffiti including the words “GAZA” and “Free Palestine,” got a buzz cut and wore a keffiyeh scarf on his head for court to hide his identity. He was arraigned on felony criminal mischief and misdemeanor graffiti charges. Not only was he identified defacing the World War 1 memorial dedicated to Manhattan's 107th Infantry Regiment, but also a statue of Civil War Union General William Tecumseh Sherman as well. Police went to the boy's home — and spent hours negotiating with his parents. The parents finally agreed to walk the teen the two blocks to the 121st Precinct station house, where he was arrested. Missionary William Carey published influential evangelism book And finally, we celebrated an important milestone in Christian history just yesterday. On May 12th, 1792, William Carey, the Father of Modern Missions, published his highly influential book on the importance of evangelism. The title is anything but pithy.  Ready?  Carey's book is entitled, An Enquiry into the Obligations of Christians, to use means for the Conversion of the Heathens in which the Religious State of the Different Nations of the World, the Success of Former Undertakings, and the practicability of Further Undertakings, are Considered.   Despite that long title, the passionate content of his book led to the founding of the English Baptist Missionary Society. A Baptist from 1783, Carey served for several years as a pastor in Moulton, Northamptonshire, where he also taught school and continued his trade as a shoemaker.  In 1789, he transferred to the Baptist church at Leicester.  Then, in 1793, Carey and John Thomas, a doctor, went to Calcutta, India. Carey became a lifelong missionary to India. In fact, he has been called the “father of Bengali prose” for his grammars, dictionaries, and translations. William Wilberforce, the English abolitionist, described the English Baptist Missionary Society as “one of the chief glories” of the British nation. In Romans 10:14, the Apostle Paul asked, “How, then, can they call on the One they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the One of whom they have not heard? The world's oldest fossilised forest was uncovered in Somerset last week. We head to palaeobotanist, Dr Christopher Berry's, lab at Cardiff University to learn about these cladoxylopsids. They lived 390 million years ago and although they are not the ancestors of today's trees, they reveal some extraordinary evolutionary secrets. Also, Marnie speaks to Dr Chris Thorogood of the University of Oxford Botanic Gardens about his new book Pathless Forest: The Quest to Save the World's Largest Flowers. Called “Rafflesia” plants and found in the remotest parts of South East Asia, their flowers burst from the rain forest floor the size of pumpkins and are critically endangered. Chris talks of his world of extreme fieldwork and hair-raising expeditions, braving leeches, lizards and lethal forest swamps, to discover the rarest of rare blooms. Plus, the Wildlife Trust's Making Friends with Molluscs campaign starts today, and I'm sure many gardeners will declare this an impossible task!
