In this episode, I'm visiting Bucklers Hard on the Beaulieu estate – just a short distance from Palace House, Beulieu Abbey and the National Motor Museum. The first Earl of Sandwich, the branch of the Montagu family which I married into, is known worldwide because he was head of the Admiralty and brought King Charles II back from exile. But it's now wonderful for me to visit Beaulieu and discover the rich maritime links of another branch of the Montagu family. I'll be meeting with the Hon. Mary Montagu-Scott who has a lifelong passion for the maritime history of Beaulieu and is a keen sailor. Mary shows me the replica timber framed shipwrights workshop which she masterminded. And my husband Luke and I will be cheering on our 17 year old son, William as he and Mary set sail on the Beaulieu river. To find out more about Palace House, Beaulieu: https://www.beaulieu.co.ukPlease support the production of American Viscountess and in particular our high production quality of the Historic Houses by becoming a Patron at https://www.patreon.com/americanviscountessHere you'll received all vlogs and Historic House episodes early and ad-free plus behind-the-scenes videos, American Viscountess merchandise and much more! Not only is Beaulieu home to the National Motor Museum, but also to the extraordinary ruins of Beaulieu Abbey, which date back to the foundation of the monastery here in the thirteenth century. The more I visit historic houses around Britain, the more I realise how many of them have monastic roots. In this episode, Lord Montagu guides me around some of the surviving buildings and shows me the exquisite wall hangings, stitched by his mother, which chart the history of the abbey. I also explore a hidden part of the Beaulieu estate where the well used by the monks still survives today. And I end my visit at the newly restored ice house – a glimpse back to the days when historic houses functioned more like life in the tv series, Downton Abbey. In a new series of films, I explore the historic home of Lord Montagu of Beaulieu. In 1952, Beaulieu was one of the first historic houses in Britain to open it's doors to the public - and with the family passion for the motor car at its heart, interest soon grew and the National Motor Museum was born. Today, the collection includes 285 vehicles and thousands of objects relating to the history of motoring. A highlight for me was a visit to the workshops of the museum - where I was able to have a peek under the bonnet of one of the cars that launched the museum - a 1903 De Dion Bouton ... be sure to watch to see what happened when I got behind the wheel! Holden historian Don Loffler and National Motor Museum senior curator Mick Bolognese discuss some of the most important landmarks in Holden's manufacturing story. In this recording we hear about National Motor Museum's Holden Heroes exhibition, which features the company's most prized heritage vehicle collection. Mick and Don discuss the impact that these vehicles had on Australia after the Second World War. In its golden age, Holden sold about one in every two new cars in Australia, so it's no wonder that most Australians have some connection with Holden cars, and that the retirement of the brand just a few months ago was so deeply felt. Discover (or remember!) some of Holden's best known vehicles and rarely seen prototypes. This free public lecture was part of the History Trust's Talking History series 2021.

The National Motor Museum of Australia's Senior Curator, Michelangelo Bolognese, presented on 17 October 'Bush Mechanics: The Exhibition.' In this talk Michelangelo explored the history of the content and development of Bush Mechanics: The Exhibition, based on the incredibly popular ABC TV series of the same name. It shows the adoption of the motorcar as an integral part of Aboriginal life in Central Australia. More than just a showcase of bush ingenuity, the show was a documentary-style series with strong elements of comedy, music and magical realism. The exhibition, developed in close partnership with Pintubi Anmatjere Warlpiri (PAW) Media, shows the ingenuity of the bush mechanics in the context of Warlpiri storytelling, music and art and wider issues (motoring and non-motoring) affecting Aboriginal Australians. The exhibition was displayed at the Torrens Parade Ground as part of the Tarnanthi festival. This free public lecture was part of the History Trust of South Australia's Talking History series. The Adelaide Show 2017 Retrospective: Science and Nature, is our reflection upon our relationship with the world around us and the creatures who share it with us. Our retrospective is co-hosted by 2017 guest, Leila Henderson. In 2017, some of the honourable members for this topic include: Max Martin from iNform Health, it's hard to talk about science and nature without thinking about Max's persistent messages through the life of this podcast to get out into nature and move more, based on his evidence-based exercise physiology expertise. Episode 177. Senior Curator for the National Motor Museum, Mick Bolognese, gave us a great insight into how the Bush Mechanics incorporated "nature" in their vehicles through applied "science" from necessity. Episode 196. Matt Taylor and Krystal Brock from Middle Ground Productions applied science in their own way, to create a post-apocalyptic world in Dust, a web series shot here in SA. Episode 201. But for this week's show we'll be revisiting: Bruce Munday, author of Those Wild Rabbits, to shake our heads over how naive our European forebears were when it came to introducing rabbits to Australia Adrian Sherriff from Animals Anonymous, who confirmed the existence of the Adelaide Snake Lizard and generally helped us feel more comfortable around snakes Associate Professor Vic Gostin, who took us through the wild and rocky ride that our patch of Earth endured over the past few billion years This week, the SA Drink Of The Week is still the Penfolds Grange, which is now being eaten via poached pears. In 100 Weeks Ago, we hear from two mates, John Schumann and David Minnear, who joined us as guests for our first ever live show, as part of the 2015 Adelaide Fringe. And in the musical pilgrimage ... we'll go back to Sleep At Night by Tim Whitt from episode 212, recorded using instruments created from sound samples taken around Adelaide. The Bay To Birdwood and Beyond is a fitting title for a show all about the motor car and our roads. The motor car is one of those things many of us have a love/hate relationship with. There are times we love their convenience and power and the freedom they symbolise. At other times we hate the pollution, the traffic congestion and those hot days as we scald ourselves on seatbelt buckles. But no matter your position, one thing is very true: The car is entwined deeply in all our lives, forging the black latticework of asphalt that our towns and houses are wedged between, to the rite of passage many of us strive for, of getting our driver's licence. Our national motor museum is in Birdwood and tonight, to help us take a few stories for a spin, we have the director of the Naitonal Motor Museum, Paul Rees, and chair of the Bay To Birdwood, Michael Neale.
