This week on Baxie's Musical Podcast I'm thrilled to welcome back Robyn Hitchcock for the third time! Robyn has just released his 25th solo album since the initial break up of The Soft Boys in 1981. “The Confuser” is already being hailed as one of his best records in years (which is amazing considering the stunning quality of his work over the last 50 years). On top of the new album Robyn has also just released “Stranded in the Future” --his second memoir. It's a wonderful book filled with stories about some of the muses that have shaped his amazing creative output throughout his career. I have been a huge fan since as far back as I can remember. It's always a thrill to have him back! Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee.

Baxie's Musical Podcast: Jimmy Flemion from The Frogs

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2026 44:57

This week on Baxie's Musical Podcast I talk with the legendary Jimmy Flemion of The Frogs! In the early 80's Jimmy and his brother Dennis would form a band that became an underground sensation—not just because of the great Indie Pop songs that they spent years trying to perfect but for that they never intended to release! After the release of their first album, the Flemion brothers began making a series of improvised home recordings using a four-track tape recorder. Together they created more than 1,000 songs that were purely meant to amuse themselves. A majority of these songs were made up on the spot. The results were a collection of songs that were often both shocking and hilarious! Eventually however, some of these recordings fell into the hand of the late producer Steve Albini (Big Black) who presented them to Homestead Records. Many of these songs would find their was only to their second album “It's Only Right and Natural”. The album spread quickly throughout the music industry where it caught the attention of the likes of Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam, Billy Corgan from Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, and Evan Dando of the Lemonheads. The Frogs also became a favorite of Nirvana's Kurt Cobain---who famously included the album on his list of the Top 50 albums of all time. Next month, their 1996 follow-up “My Daughter the Broad” will be reissued. It's a newly expanded double album that included eight unreleased tracks. At the time of its release, it was considered one of the funniest albums of the decade. But don't kid yourself. The Frogs were incredible songwriters who were capable of making insanely great (but quirky) pop songs as well. Jimmy talks about that, their home recordings, their reputation, their wild live performances, playing Lollapalooza, the accidental drowning death of his brother Dennis in 2012, and about the upcoming documentary that's been in the works for the last ten years! This is an amazing story that's totally worth listening to! Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and in the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee!

This week on Baxie's Musical Podcast I talk with Blake Watt from the band Family Stereo. After spending the last six years cranking out a number of amazing singles and EP's, Family Stereo has finally released their debut album called “The Thread”. While some are calling the new record a collection of lush, folk-inspired pop songs, the music of Family Stereo is much more than that. Interestingly enough, Blake background puts him in a unique situation amongst other up-and-coming artists. Blake is the son of Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt from the successful 80's British pop duo Everything but the Girl. But Blake is hardly riding on his family's coattails. And the new record proves it. Absolutely beautiful! Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app! Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Chicopee!

This week Baxie talks with bass player Darryl Jenifer from Bad Brains—the most important and revered hardcore band in history! But don't be fooled by the label! Bad Brains were a band out of Washington DC whose roots were steeped in both reggae and jazz fusion. And yet, Bad Brains were the band that every other hardcore band looked up to. And while some may have focused on their wild musicianship, speed, and precision—the real important part of this band was its message of unity and positivity. And that may have been what separated Bad Brains from just about everybody else. Darryl has just released his second jazz-inspired solo album called “Weather Channel”. It's an album that includes some amazing jazz heavyweights (John Modeski, Ben Perowsky, the late Jack DeJohnette, and several others). The record also draws from funk, dub, and psychedelia as well. He also tosses in a couple of re-arranged Bad Brains classics as well. Darryl talks about the record, the legacy of Bad Brains, about the misunderstandings of their lead singer HR, and much more! This is an outstanding interview with one of my all-time favorites! Listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, and on the Rock102 app. Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee.

Baxie talks with Scott Phares from The Hollywood Stars. The Hollywood Stars were a band that was hand selected by the notorious Kim Fowley to be the West Coast answer to the New York Dolls. While things didn't exactly work out that way, the Hollywood Stars attempted to record several albums that were either abandoned or sat on the shelves for several decades. And yet, two of their songs were taken by producer Bob Ezrin and appeared on what would become platinum albums for both KISS and Alice Cooper! (“King of the Nighttime World” from KISS's Destroyer” and “Escape” which appeared on Cooper's Welcome to My Nightmare). In 2013 released their previously unreleased album “Shine Like a Radio”. Six years later they released their second lost album “Sound City”. Both were released to great critical acclaim. In 2024 the Hollywood Stars reformer and released the album “Starstruck” which was also well received. And on July 17th the Hollywood Stars released their latest album, “Hey L.A.”.
