Psychoanalysis On and Off the Couch
"Before Painting the Bird, You Must Become the Bird" with Jonathan Palmer, MD (Newton, Mass.)

"A number of art schools in the early 60s said: “Clearly, it is the relationship of the painter to the medium that is the essence of painting - the painter must be emotionally present, and this is what we should instill in our students.” So they started to take away traditional training in art schools of representational drawing, of color theory, of figurative drawing, and what they ended up with was a generation of artists who were passionately throwing paint at canvases but unable to make art. The relationship between the fundamentals and intuition is very complicated. Nobody seemed to make the point that the great abstract expressionists  were all trained for decades in traditional art schools. That's what they came out of, and we see this in our analytic colleagues. Many of them are writing wonderfully at the moment, but they were trained as Kleinians or trained as ego psychologists, and they have that in their bone marrow. The kind of representational work with Apple [painting of his dog] that I am talking about when I say: I draw and I draw and I draw until I can put that aside, in analytic work I go to something basic in my training. For me it happens to be something that's close to Paul Gray, it's not where I'm going to stop, but I can use Paul Gray because that's what I was trained in - I will look for transference, I'll look for defense, I'll look for resistance and I'll go back and look for the derivatives of certain affects that are enacted in the relationship. I go over it and over it until I can relinquish it like I did with the painting of Apple, and then the intuitive comes in, but the intuitive is the reward at the end of decades of hard work."   Episode Description: We begin with Jon's mother's encouragement to paint by finding the bird's vitality through "becoming the bird." This leads us to consider the relationship between intuitive seeing and the "images which I might desire to produce." We discuss his notion of the aesthetic matrix which applies both to the analytic encounter as it does to the painter's relationship to his creative process. Jon shares with us his conviction that basic technique, whether artistic or analytic, must first become part of one's inner make-up before intuition can enlighten an obscure moment. He walks us through his creative process in the face of a blank canvas on the wall in front of him. He discusses the different uses of watercolor and oil paint and how their unique properties parallel his spontaneous engagement at various periods of an analysis. He presents a clinical encounter and how he was able to unpack a countertransference impasse through working on a painting. He closes with sharing an experience he had in his native South Africa which leads him to feel that "it's a blessing to be able to work in America."   Linked Paper and Websites: The Aesthetic Matrix: A Conversation Between a Painter and a Psychoanalyst

Jesse Starcher, Robert Cooper, Mik Wanamaker and Mark Radulich present their MSlipknot 25th Anniversary Self Titled 2024 Album Review as part of the MHOD Jukebox!Slipknot is an American heavy metal band formed in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1995 by percussionist Shawn Crahan, former vocalist Anders Colsefni and bassist Paul Gray. After several lineup changes in its early years, the band settled on nine members for more than a decade: Crahan, Gray, Joey Jordison, Craig Jones, Mick Thomson, Corey Taylor, Sid Wilson, Chris Fehn, and Jim Root. Slipknot is well known for its attention-grabbing image, aggressive style of music, and energetic and chaotic live shows. The band rapidly rose to fame following the release of their eponymous debut album in 1999. The 2001 follow-up album, Iowa, although darker in tone, made the band more popular. After a brief hiatus, Slipknot returned in 2004 with Vol. 3: (The Subliminal Verses), before going on another hiatus and returning in 2008 with its fourth album, All Hope Is Gone, which debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart. After another long hiatus, Slipknot released its fifth studio album, .5: The Gray Chapter, in 2014. Their sixth studio album, We Are Not Your Kind, was released on August 9, 2019. Their seventh studio album, The End, So Far, was released on September 30, 2022. The band has released two live albums titled 9.0: Live and Day of the Gusano: Live in Mexico, a compilation album titled Antennas to Hell, and five live DVDs. The band has sold 30 million records worldwide and over 12 million in their home country.Slipknot is the debut studio album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. It was released on June 29, 1999, by Roadrunner Records, following a demo containing a few of the songs which had previously been released in 1998. Later, it was reissued in December 1999 with a slightly-altered track listing and mastering as the result of a lawsuit. It was the first release by the band to be produced by Ross Robinson, who sought to refine Slipknot's sound rather than alter the group's musical direction. This is the only album to feature original guitarist Josh Brainard who left at the end of recording in late 1998 while the band was taking a brief break. Jim Root, who recorded two tracks at this point, would appear full time on subsequent albums starting with their next album Iowa. The album spans several genres, but is generally noted for its extensive percussion and overall heavy sound. It was well received by fans and critics alike and was responsible for bringing Slipknot a large increase in popularity. The album peaked at number 51 on the Billboard 200, and has gone on to become certified double platinum in the United States, making it the band's best-selling album. In 2011, it was voted the best debut album of the last 25 years by readers of Metal Hammer magazine.Disclaimer: The following may contain offensive language, adult humor, and/or content that some viewers may find offensive – The views and opinions expressed by any one speaker does not explicitly or necessarily reflect or represent those of Mark Radulich or W2M Network.Mark Radulich and his wacky podcast on all the things:https://linktr.ee/markkind76alsohttps://www.teepublic.com/user/radulich-in-broadcasting-networkFB Messenger: Mark Radulich LCSWTiktok: @markradulichtwitter: @MarkRadulichInstagram: markkind76RIBN Album Playlist: https://suno.com/playlist/91d704c9-d1ea-45a0-9ffe-5069497bad59

Let's get down and dirty and talk about terroir, in particular soil.  Terroir is a word tossed around flippantly in the wine world without much explanation.  Simply put, it is a reference to the “sense of place” where grapevines grow.  This can include location, weather, altitude, rainfall, fog, proximity to water, angle to the sun or aspect, and many other elements, including soil.  In this episode, Charisse and Kristi break down the most common soils ideal for vineyards and explain how the differences can influence wine long before harvest, fermentation and bottling.  Geomorphology, climate, flora and fauna as well as traditions can play a part in terroir.  But the one grounding element is the soil.Join us as we deep dive into the grungy, dirty, dusty topic of soil! Born to parents who both worked in the entertainment industry, Dannielle Gaha grew up surrounded by singing and dancing, training and helping out at the talent school run by her mother, Janice Breen. She made her first steps into the industry herself by appearing on TV talent contest Star Search, which led to ongoing singing work with judge Glenn Shorrock and, through that, her big break — being picked to record duet "Communication" with John Farnham. Dannielle, who now goes by her married name DeAndrea, recalls those early stages of her career and what it was like performing with the biggest male singer in the country on the anti-drugs hit. She also discusses the music she released as a solo performer, Australian single "I Like It" and the three tracks through her deal with Epic Records in the UK: "Stuck In The Middle", "Do It For Love" and "Secret Love", most of which involved input from Wa Wa Nee's Paul Gray. Although that solo pop career didn't take off as she hoped, she landed on her feet in the mid-'90s with an ongoing gig as one-half of The Nissan Cedrics on Roy & HG's series, Club Buggery, and since then has carved out a diverse career in a range of musical styles.Bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/aussieTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @TurnAroundOnJoyInstagram: @chartbeatsau, @joyturnbeataroundEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com

If you know Charisse, you know she's a bubble girl through and through! We're not sure she's ever met a bubble she didn't like! Her passion has definitely rubbed off on Kristi and what better way to let two bubble girls have fun than to cover all things sparkling! But are all bubbles created equal? Not at all! There are many ways to put those tiny little bubbles of joy into a bottle and we're breaking it down for you in this episode!Beady, semi-sparkling, pétillant, frizzante, Spumante, sparkling. All these words describe bubbles in wine, from lightly fizzy or low pressure to fireworks in a bottle or high pressure. Something for everyone to love! While “Champagne” can only come from the Champagne region of France, how it's made can be used anywhere in the world. Referred to as Champagne Method, Traditional Method, Méthode Champenoise, or Méthode Classique, this process creates bubbles through two fermentation processes trapping CO2 into the wine. Vintage or non-vintage, while we touched on this in our Wine and Fashion episode, you'll get the low down on what this means for your wine journey. We'll introduce you to multiple alternatives to true champagne you can enjoy for daily drinkable to your biggest celebrations.Charmant Method, used for Prosecco, takes a whole different path in getting tiny bubbles into the bottle and not all Prosecco's are sweet. Being bubble girls, we definitely say don't knock it until you try it. Listen in for clues on how to find the style you desire! Ancestral Method, Continuous Method, Soda Method, Forced Carbonation, and Méthode Contemporaine round out the ways winemakers can create bubbly beauties from the most complex to the simplest, we cover them all!We couldn't do a wine podcast without wine and this episode's pick is a Sparkling Wine from Hilmy Cellars in the Texas Hill Country. Made in the Forced Carbonation method from Semillon and Orange Muscat, this gorgeous wine was brought to us by our sponsor, Texas Wine Club! Summer Whites You've Likely Never Tried

Summer, summer, summer.  Long days, vacations, staycations, friends, family and fun.  Hot days and warm nights call for a style change in your go-to wines.  Rosés and whites reign supreme.  We're totally on board, but this summer, we're pouring a few new white wines into our glass and bringing you along for the ride!As two bubble loving wine friends, Kristi's first surprise for Charisse is the Sparkling Riesling NV from Coeur Cause Wines.  Not only is this crisp, fresh, citrus forward bubbly deliciously refreshing, a percent of every bottle sold supports one of Coeur Cause's charities.  Owner Stacy Bellew partners with winemaker Josh Maloney to bring a sparkler which maintains the flavor and aroma (think petrol) so true to Riesling.  Think you don't like Riesling, this beauty will change your mind!Next up, Txakoli (sounds like broccoli) from Basa Lore.  Made from the Hondarrabi Zuri grape varietal, this lightly fizzy wine is typical of the Getariako Txakolina D.O. in the Basque Country of Spain.  Think steep slopes, green Spain, crisp ocean breezes and this wine exudes the perfect accompaniment to any and all of your summer fun.  It's bright.  It's crisp.  It's definitely worth hunting down to stock your fridge.  Txakoli loosely translates to “enough for the home” but we're not sure there actually is enough of this Summer delight.  Sharing her Basque and Txakoli expertise with us is Dr. Kerri Lesh, or Dr. Txakoli.Kristi's summer adventure in Wisconsin and Minnesota afforded a visit to Saint Croix Vineyards with Peter Hemstad, co-owner, for a vineyard-based exploration into the world of grape variety creation.  One of the results?  Itasca!  This superb creation not only withstands the frigid MN winters, it is also hardy enough to resist pests and disease which can plague vineyards.  With 23 varieties of wine, many lesser known varietals created by Peter and the University of Minnesota, this winery should be on everyone's vacation destination top 10.Hailing from La Pradera Vineyard in the Texas High Plains rounds out the final four.  From Tatum Cellars, this single vineyard, single varietal Roussanne is a rare expression of the varietal as a stand alone.  Most typically blended in the southern Rhône region of France, this wine lets Roussanne shine.  Juicy, spicy, toasty yet maintaining a freshness made for summer drinking.  While we know it may be impossible to find these wines in your local wine shop, we hope you'll get them shipped to your doorstep in time for this weekend's summer fling!Show Sponsors:> The Magnolia in Fort Worth> The Texas Wine ClubDon't forget to FOLLOW, LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE and let us know any topics you'd like us to cover!Cheers! As two women in the wine industry, what better topic for us to tackle than “Women in Wine”?!  Special guests include Lindsey Koch and Benedicte Rhyne who share their passion for wine and how they embraced their natural female skills and talents to make their way in the traditionally male oriented world of wine.  Meet Lindsey:  Lindsey started her career in Fort Worth, TX as a medical staffing agency before launching her own staffing company, Embracing her interest in wine she studied to become a certified Sommelier, she took the big leap of faith to start her own wine bar, WineHaus from the ground up.  After  8 years, she sold the business to a previous customer as she made the move out to Sonoma County, California to further her career in wine. Living in California Wine Country, Lindsey is currently the Estate Director for Small Vines Wines in Sebastopol, managing everything from marketing and customer outreach, to curating bespoke tasting experiences at the winery. Additionally, Lindsey and her husband always dreamed about starting their own winery and made the dream a reality, starting Curves & Edges Wines during the 2020 vintage. She focuses her efforts at Curves & Edges on two varieties that have always brought her great joy, Sauvignon Blanc and Merlot. Meet Bénédicte: Bénédicte (Bennie) Rhyne is a native of Aix en Provence, France. She received her master in oenology (the study of wine) from the Université de Bourgogne (Dijon), had a successful experience at Chateau Pétrus, in Pomerol, Bordeaux, before global adventures to New Zealand and England landed her at Ravenswood Winery in Sonoma, California, as a member of the winemaking-team. Here she developed a”Meritage“program increasing the winery's production ten-fold between 1991-2001. Additionally she created a sophisticated wine laboratory with well -trained staff and quality control procedures. In 2002, Bénédicte and her family moved to Fredericksburg, TX and created a Wine Laboratory to compliment her Wine Country Consulting business.  Bénédicte served sixteen years as the winemaker of Mesa Vineyards, St. Genevieve Wine in Fort Stockton, Texas. She the spent 10 years as the winemaker of Kuhlman Cellars, a quickly growing winery whose door's opened in October of 2014 in Hye, Texas to produce fine quality and “Terroir” driven wines from Texas in the style of her native Provence.  Bennie is now focused full time on her wine consulting and launching her own wine label - stay tuned!Show Sponsors:> The Magnolia in Fort Worth> The Texas Wine ClubDon't forget to FOLLOW, LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE and let us know any topics you'd like us to cover!Cheers! Some great Mickey time in this one (long overdo), plus a crazily plotted action scene, expectedly awkard portrayal of Paula Gray's condition, and some fiery Equalizer lectures to their lame teenage son.
