Our very special guest Daniel Blau Rogge is back for another episode that really runs the gamut: from Evan Dando to Roky Erickson; from Edward Scissorhands to Hannibal Lecter; to a punk skateboarder who couldn't return a damn phone call; and to a dance lesson conveyed through printed words and still photographs, which is how we had to learn things before online video came along to improve our lives (...sometimes). Katy Kirby is my guest on this episode of That's How I Remember It. Her record Blue Raspberry came out in early 2024 and it's one my absolute favorites from this year. We talked about making that record and also typing lyrics on an old school typewriter, “Hard Drive” by Evan Dando, worship chords, playing bass in a church band at 13 years old, 4 Loko, and much more. Filled with breezy melodic beatitudes that are impossible not to enjoy, It's a Shame About Ray is an underrated alt-rock classic that proved Evan Dando did indeed deserve his lemon lordship. {{{Gracias Hermanos Cansecos}}} https://youtu.be/EzKcxQGOKKE?si=st8Z_R3rMnPmyxHC
Alt-rocker Evan Dando joins Radio Boston to reflect on his musical career, which began in Back Bay in the 1980s.
Baxie talks to legendary Massachusetts based singer/songwriter Juliana Hatfield! Since the late 1980's Juliana has released nineteen solo albums (with the promise of more on the way). She's released three albums of covers--including last year's "Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO". Plus, she released several records with her first band, The Blake Babies. She's also had numerous collaborations with the likes of Evan Dando of The Lemonheads and Paul Westerberg of The Replacements. Juliana talks about all of that, songwriting, touring, and many of her hits like "My Sister"(1993), "Spin the Bottle"(1994), and "Universal Heart-Beat"(1995). Juliana is going on tour this month with Soul Asylum and will be making a stop at The Sinclair Theater in Cambridge on November 4th. She and the Juliana Hatfield Three will also make a stop at The Drake in Amherst on November 3rd. Brought to you by Metro Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicopee
July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. Released during the decline of 80s hair metal and rise of 90s Seattle grunge and alternative, the 1992 album It's A Shame About Ray by The Lemonheads is rarely mentioned as being in the pantheon of 90s album, but maybe it should. Sporting tight and smart songwriting arrangements with track after track of catchy hooks, lead singer and guitarist Evan Dando, bassist and backup singer Juliana Hatfield, and drummer David Ryan make the most of their sub-thirty minute album, packing short songs with simple but well-thought-out changes and dynamics on par with contemporaries like Sugar, Buffalo Tom, and Dinosaur Jr. Songs In This Episode Intro - It's A Shame About Ray 21:39 - Hannah & Gabi 27:41 - My Drug Buddy 33:05 - Alison's Starting to Happen 40:30 - Bit Part Outro - Confetti Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. On today's episode, I talk to musician Evan Dando. Attending the CommonWealth School in Boston in the early 1980s, Evan met Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz, and in 1986, they formed The Lemonheads. The band released three great albums on Taang!, but it wasn't until after signing to Atlantic and releasing It's a Shame About Ray in 1992 that the band broke through. While there have been numerous ups and downs, personnel changes, a six-year hiatus, during which Evan released a wonderful album under his own name, The Lemonheads have endured through the decades. They've recorded a number of new singles, and starting in early February, Evan will be touring across the US! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. On this episode, I am so very excited to have Juliana Hatfield on the show. She's been one of my absolute favorite artists since I first heard the Blake Babies' “Earwig” back in the early 90s. Since then, she's consistently put out great albums and been extremely prolific – releasing almost 20 albums in addition to collaborations with Paul Westerberg, Matthews Caws, Evan Dando, and others. Her most recent, out November 17th, is “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO,” a continuation of her series of tribute albums that have featured Olivia Newton-John and The Police. Today, Juliana talks about her career and how the politics of the music business led her to almost quit entirely and how that journey led her to go back to school to try and get an MFA in fine art. Musical credits: "On Top Of It" by Blue Dot Sessions Juliana Hatfield's website with tour dates and more info. Juliana's art work can be found here. Michael interviews solo artist Jack Adamant about his new album "Obscure Places & Cupboards". A great collection of guitar driven rockers that call to mind The Get Up Kids, Say Anything and older indie stalwarts like Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. Jack is definitely influenced by J Mascis and particularly Sebadoh. We're back for 2023! and to celebrate, we're talking about our favourite songs from 20 years earlier in 2003, when Colin quit university to work in a record shop, In addition to the music we talk about linguistics in pop punk, and feature both the longest, & shortedt songs we've ever had on any of our playlists. We've each chosen our 10 favourite songs of the year and sent them over to Colin's wife Helen, who put the playlists together and distributed them so we were each given a playlist of the 20 songs from the other two hosts, along with our own 10. We then ranked the playlists in order of preference and sent them back to Helen, who totalled up the points and worked out the order. She also joined us on the episode to read out the countdown, which we found out as we recorded so all reactions are genuine. Now, admittedly, in parts we're a little bit brutal to some of the songs in the list as we're three separate people with differing music tastes, but please remember that to be in this episode at all the songs have to have been in one of our top 10's of that year. Bands featured in this episode include (In alphabetical order, no spoilers here!) - Alfie, Alkaline Trio, A Perfect Circle, Blink 182, Broadcast, Cult Of Luna, Cursive, The Dears, Evan Dando, Explosions In The Sky, The Fall, Four Tet, Jose Gonzalez, Hope Of The States, Jay-Z, Lamb Of God, Liam Lynch, Machine Head, Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks, Mew, Ministry, Kylie Minogue, Mogwai, Opeth, The Postal Service, Radiohead, Sleep, Spiritualized, Stars, & Patrick Wolf.Find all songs in alphabetical order here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4uuaF2z2giwA5OBbH7LxbT?si=ffd7a22f3065434cFind our We Dig Music Pollwinners Party playlist (featuring all of the winning songs up until now) here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/45zfDHo8zm6VqrvoEQSt3z?si=Ivt0oMj6SmitimvumYfFrQIf you want to listen to megalength playlists of all the songs we've individually picked since we started doing best of the year episodes, you can listen to Colin's here – https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5x3Vy5Jry2IxG9JNOtabRT?si=HhcVKRCtRhWCK1KucyrDdg Ian's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2H0hnxe6WX50QNQdlfRH5T?si=XmEjnRqISNqDwi30p1uLqA and Tracey's here - https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2p3K0n8dKhjHb2nKBSYnKi?si=7a-cyDvSSuugdV1m5md9Nw The playlist of 20 songs from the other two hosts was scored as usual, our favourite song got 20 points, counting down incrementally to our least favourite which got 1 point. The scoring of our own list of 10 is now slightly more complicated in order to give a truer level of points to our own favourites. So rather than them only being able to score as many points as our 10th favourite in the other list, the points in our own list were distributed as follows -1st place - 20 points2nd place - 18 points3rd place – 16 points4th place – 14 points5th place – 12 points6th place – 9 points7th place – 7 points8th place – 5 points9th place – 3 points10th place -1 pointHosts - Ian Clarke, Colin Jackson-Brown & Tracey BGuest starring Helen Jackson-Brown.Playlist compiling/distributing – Lydia ClarkeRecorded/Edited/Mixed/Original Music by Colin Jackson-Brown for We Dig PodcastsThanks to Peter Latimer for help with the scoring system.Say hello at www.facebook.com/wedigmusicpcast or tweet us at http://twitter.com/wedigmusicpcast or look at shiny pictures on Instagram at http://instagram.com/wedigmusicpcast Part of the We Made This podcast network. https://twitter.com/wmt_network You can also find all the We Dig Music & Free With This Months Issue episodes at www.wedigpodcasts.com

On this week's episode we have a laid back hang with our friend Chris Anzolone — a great drummer and a long time fixture of the Boston music scene who, in a stroke of mid-life clarity, decided it would be fun to run a record store. Oi, you happy heads! Jump on the rollercoaster and head straight into the heart of love, because this week we're turning the songs of 1979 inside out! With 1979 being arguably THE greatest year for songs within the O3L era, these are definitely the songs that changed our lives. If our thinly disguised song references weren't enough of a giveway, it is our biggest thrill (last one, we promise) to welcome the songwriter and guitarist from one of the most beloved groups in '80s British pop, David Newton from The Mighty Lemon Drops! We are celebrating their upcoming 5 CD box set, Inside Out: 1985-1990 on Cherry Red Records, containing their first three albums and a generous selection of singles, EP tracks, demos, radio sessions, live tracks and more. Dave takes on a journey from his first band in 1979, the Lemon Drops' first recordings on Dan Treacy's Dreamworld label, being a part of the legendary C86 compilation, their major label days on Chrysalis Records with big budget producers, studios and tours, the final days of the band, to present day. Well, our only excuse is that we started out hangry and it all went awry from there. So, if you've been asking yourself, “when are these crabs gonna get a little filthy?” Well then, do we have the episode for you. Traversing all aspects of snacks - the food-based, the not-so-food-based, but all-edible mix of tasty items from cheese to oysters to Tommy Lee, The Edge, Sam Elliott, Swayze, Cruise and even a Lemonhead. Pick your poison, we're likely all about ‘bout it.Also – anyone else hella stoked and thanking the Amazon gods there's a 2023 remake of Road House starring Jake Gyllenhaal on deck?

Grunge up your unwashed hair and please put out that endless chain of cigarettes as we succumb to the 90s slacker vortex that is Reality Bites. Do Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke's characters actually deserve each other because they both suck so much? And should we feel bad for Ben Stiller or relieved that he totally dodged a bullet there? Could we just watch Steve Zahn be adorable and Janeane Garofalo in her perfect vintage outfits instead? And can we directly blame all the shitty behavior and toxic relationships during our 20s on this movie? We'll let you know as soon as we stop listening to Lisa Loeb on loop.Read Randall's full episode notes at yourenofun.com.And follow us on Instagram , Facebook and Twitter.
In this week's episode, Wyndham and Jeremy return after a brief summer vacation to brush the dust off The Lemonheads' 1992 album It's A Shame About Ray. Sweet, sentimental, brilliant, and with the world's most amazing backing band. We speak for everyone when we say "We want to go to the zoo with him, too". Perfect Day, originally by Lou Reed, covered by Duran Duran, and by Kirsty MacColl with Evan Dando. Outro music is Choppin' Broccoli by Dana Carvey, and we're not sorry at all.
Joel Jerome is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles, CA. His solo debut, Super Flower Blood Moon (Dangerbird Records) hits the streets on May 13th, and promises a dark, folky trip that celebrates his 90's indie rock influences as much and it pays homage to his latin roots. In this episode Joel tells us how the pandemic opened his eyes to activism, how that's translated to his work with The Union of Musicians and Allied Workers (UMAW) and why unions are important to working musicians. We hear how his long time pal Jim Fairchild (Modest Mouse, Grandaddy, All Smiles) had a hand in the early stages of Super Flower Blood Moon and why it was different from past records. Joel also share's his view on "capturing recordings" verses "producing" and how thats applied in his own studio, Psychedelic Thriftstore. Joe plays a couple tunes from the new record and Joel tells us where's he's looking forward to touring in 2022. https://dangerbirdrecords.com/https://joeljeromemusic.bandcamp.com/https://www.izotope.com/https://us.minorfigures.com/
This week we're talking about possibly the best essay-related week of the year: March Faxness round 1, in which 64 essays about cover songs faced off in a tournament. We try to touch on our favorites—although we probably missed some—and discuss the bracket and upcoming games. Also: Elvis Costello gets spicy on Twitter, we all get spicy about the Mountain Goats, dork rodeos, community college bowl, Denry's back(!), Drake's reading list, Kamp Kilmer, Justin tries to understand NFTs, Elena explains the Chicken Van, some country music talk, is the shopping cart a dance?, roof-raising techniques, and Elena does mini-covers of Evan Dando, Snow's “Informer,” and Tom Jones' “Sex Bomb.” Some things we mention: All March Faxness essays are available on the site: http://marchxness.com Follow March Xness on Twitter: https://twitter.com/marchxness March Faxness Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/3rNwexRZ9dmA0nvssrPlDK Denry's March Fadness essay on Snow's “Informer”: http://marchxness.com/snowvsedwinmccain
It is no surprise that Pearl Jam was under intense pressure to follow up their debut album "Ten" with another success. What may be surprising is that the band's second studio album, Vs. (pronounced "versus") did indeed live up to the success for their debut. Vs. started at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, sold almost a million copies in its first five days, and in its first week outperformed all other albums in the top 10 combined.Pearl Jam did a number of things differently with this album. First, they recorded the songs one at a time, setting up the band in a similar way to their live concerts, and mixing each song as they went. Second, the songs created were more raw and powerful than those on their first album. Front man Eddie Vedder even began sleeping in his truck and in the sauna at the recording studio to keep up the intensity. Finally, the band deliberately did NOT make videos for any of the songs on this album, preferring to let the listeners visualize the songs rather than have that creativity removed by the presence of a video. This album also marks a change in the approach the band took to its tours, avoiding the press and focusing directly on the fans. In addition to refusing to make videos, they dramatically scaled down television appearances, and capped the prices of their tickets to make their concerts more accessible to fans.Guest contributor Joe Davis brings us this outstanding album. GoMany interpret this first single and lead-off track from the album to be about child abuse, though Eddie Vedder hinted that it was about his truck breaking down on him! AnimalThe opening lyrics "one, two, three, four, five against one" reflect the originally planned title of the album (Five Against One), and the idea that the five members of the band are up against the machine of the music industry. The album would eventually be called "Vs." instead.Glorified G Joe picked this song for the first two lines: "Got a gun, fact I got two. That's OK, man, 'cause I love God." The lyrics come from an argument that Eddie Vedder had with drummer Dave Abbruzzese when Dave brought a gun he bought to rehearsal one day. Dave was from Texas, where guns were more common, while Vedder hated guns.Rearviewmirror Eddie Vedder wrote this song about his stepfather, whom he hated. It was about leaving him behind without a second thought. This is a fast-paced song, and Joe recommends it for your running playlist. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Theme from the BBC television special "Mr. Blobby"The television Christmas special was on the charts in the UK in November 1993. It was panned by critics and almost everyone else as it can be found as the WORST theme song ever...yet it topped the UK charts. STAFF PICKS:Everybody Hurts by R.E.M.Brian begins the staff picks with a slower and positive song from the album “Automatic for the People.” This track is an anti-suicide song, encouraging people to hold on when things go wrong, because everybody hurts sometimes.Into Your Arms by The LemonheadsRob brings us a hit off the album “Come On, Feel The Lemonheads.” The band was originally from Boston, with Evan Dando on lead vocals and guitar, Ben Deily on vocals and guitar, and Jesse Peretz on bass. This album was a follow-up to their hugely successful album ”It's a Shame About Ray.”Carry On by AngraBruce rocks out with a song off the Brazilian heavy metal band's debut album “Angels Cry.” It encourages you to...well...carry on. “So carry on, there' a meaning to life which someday we may find. And carry on, it's time to forget the remains from the past, to carry on.”The Man Who Sold the World by Nirvana Joe finishes off the staff picks with Nirvana's MTV Unplugged cover of the David Bowie song. The song lyrics are about a man who is surprised to meet a personality of himself that he thought he had left behind years ago. COMEDY TRACK:Bohemian Polka by Weird Al YankovicWeird Al stays surprisingly faithful to the original lyrics, but with a polka twist on the music.
Second chances are rare, man. And you ought to take advantage of them. On the one year anniversary of our first episode(s), we get a second chance with our first guest — Juliana Hatfield. On this episode we try to truly nail down what makes Juliana the quintessential LIFER. It's also just an opportunity to catch up and hang out. We tried really hard not to mess it up this time. Topics include: ELO, the crippling nature of being your own point AND counterpoint, Scott finally watches “Wolf Like Me”, sharing plumbers with Damon from Galaxie 500, colonoscopies, acting on “My So-Called Life”, Dinosaur Jr., Scott's Evan Dando story, “Breaking Away”, and Ben wins the game of “Iron Maiden vs. The Replacements” once and for all. So let it be written — so let it be done.
