Indie rock legend Evan Dando joins me in episode 130 to talk about The Lemonheads' excellent new album, Love Chant — their first LP of originals in twenty years. We also discuss the Townes Van Zandt covers album he's currently working on, his recently released memoir, Rumors of My Demise, and we delve into important creative influences past and present: Sylvia Plath, the Replacements, Big Star, Love, the mentorship he received from Dinosaur Jr.'s J Mascis, and more. Dando also answers a couple of fun guest questions submitted by our pals Adam Green (who co-wrote the song “Wild Thing” from the new album) and Ben Lee.
Heute bringen The Lemonheads ihr 11. „It's About Time“, dass bei Stereo.Typen mal The Lemonheads geehrt werden. Zusammen mit Achim Launert, Fan (fast) der ersten Stunde. Evan Dando selbst erzählt von seinem Weg von Bostons No.1 Punk-Club Channel ins Chateau Marmont in Hollywood und von da aus in die Abwesenheit. Fast parallel zum neuen Album legte er Anfang des Monats seine Memoiren „Rumours of My Demise“ vor, über die wir auch sprechen in #112TheLemonheads – jetzt beim Obsthändler Eures Vertrauens.
In RUMORS OF MY DEMISE: A Memoir (Gallery Books hardcover; October 7, 2025), Evan Dando sets the record straight on everything the media got wrong, divulges stories never-before-told, and shares a treasure trove of personal photos never-before-seen. The publication coincides with the October 24th release of Love Chant, the Lemonheads first original album in nearly two decades, with a U.S. tour beginning on November 11th. After Kurt Cobain's passing in 1994, everyone expected Evan Dando to be next. The Lemonheads front man, songwriter and actor started in the '80s hardcore scene and went on to become a '90s icon. Think of Evan Dando, and you think of heroin chic, grunge, and celebrity burnout. Perhaps known as much for his partying and boyish good looks, after two gold records and the kind of fame that you just can't enjoy anymore, the Lemonheads cooled off and life went on.Dando grew up in Boston, the son of a lawyer and a model, and attended the prestigious Commonwealth School. Fame was never what motivated him but the lure of the wild life proved trickier to refuse. From sneaking into concerts as a child, to sleeping on floors in the punk rock days, to crashing at Johnny Depp's place in Hollywood, he was right there in the thick of it. So much so, that social media once reported his death. Now, very much alive and enjoying a life in South America when he's not on the road, Evan Dando tells his own story. RUMORS OF MY DEMISE reminds readers what was so great about the pre-internet '90s: the innocence, the access, and the anonymity. Reclaiming the purity and exuberance of his early days and encapsulating the spirit of the era, this candid autobiography presents a portrait of an artist who lives wholly for his music, and one that makes no apologies for doing so.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
In this episode we invite the highly entertaining Lisa Verrico to join us from her native Glasgow and talk us through her career from IPC's Vox magazine to The Times. Commencing with her memory of first hearing Prince's 'Little Red Corvette' as a kid on holiday in Spain, our guest recalls her days of raving (and working in radio) before describing how she got her foot in the door at Vox. Hair-raising Mancunian encounters with Happy Mondays and Mark E. Smith serve as preludes to Lisa's hilarious 1994 interview with Oasis. We hear her "bootleg recording" of the Gallagher brothers' competing impersonations of Mick Jagger on the band's impromptu rendition of 'You Can't Always Get What You Want'. A broad discussion of what the '90s meant for pop culture takes in Lisa's memories of Oasis hanger-on Evan Dando and of the altogether different My Bloody Valentine. Clips from a 1989 audio interview with the latter's Kevin Shields and bandmates prompt reflections on MBV's extraordinary sound and their somewhat dysfunctional relationship with Creation's Alan McGee. We return to Lisa's own story by asking her what happened after Vox folded in 1998 — and how she wound up reviewing (and interviewing) for The Times for 25 years. We also discuss how much the live music experience has changed in that time. Finally, we hear about our guest's 2019 trip to L.A. to interview 17-year-old superstar-in-the-making Billie Eilish. After paying heartfelt tribute to cult neo-soul star D'Angelo — note that news of the death of former KISS guitarist Ace Frehley only reached us after this episode was recorded — Mark quotes from a 1984 interview with jazz giant Wynton Marsalis and Jasper takes us out with his thoughts on Joe Muggs' 2011 interview with the great James Blake. Many thanks to special guest Lisa Verrico. You can find her writing in The Times. Pieces discussed: Oasis: Shake'n'vac, Evan Dando: Baby I'm Bored, Evan Dando: "I get the feeling I'm being bullshitted", Evan Dando: The Smoker You Drink, The Player You Get, Evan Dando: Different Drum, My Bloody Valentine audio, Billie Eilish, D'Angelo: Soul Asylum, On D'Angelo and the Birth of Neo-Soul, D'Angelo: Black Messiah, Wynton Marsalis: The Hottest Lips in America and James Blake: Point Blake.

Seja talks to her guest Evan Dando (The Lemonheads) about living in Brazil, how glad he is to be out of America at the moment and the making of the band's latest videoclip. Evan tells Seja about having good money karma, how much the Replacements influenced him and how much he appreciates songwriting now that he doesn't take things for granted. They share feelings about their shared love of Tom Morgan and Smudge and talk about how much the two albums the Lemonheads are in Australia playing at the moment ‘ It's A Shame About Ray' and ‘C'mon Feel The Lemonheads' meant to people. Ben Kweller's music first stole my heart back in the early oughts when he released his wonderful debut album Sha Sha, and I have been a huge admirer of his work ever since. I've also had the good fortune of his friendship for more than twenty years, so it was amazing to finally get together with him for the LSQ podcast. Episode 123 features a deep and poignant conversation with BK about his entire creative history, including his excellent latest album, Cover The Mirrors, which was written in the wake of the tragic death of his teenage son Dorian. In addition to sharing how that tremendous loss ended up inspiring him to reconnect with making music in the innocent way he'd done as a kid, he details what those early creative years were like for him — writing Beatles-inspired love songs on the piano as a little kid, starting his band Radish after hearing Nirvana, hustling to get Radish their first shows at Chauncey's Place, a local billiards hall in Greenville, Texas, eventually getting rides from his parents to Dallas to play shows there, recording Radish's demos and the ensuing bidding war to sign them, and more. I was also fascinated to hear about his family connection to legendary guitarist Nils Lofgren of the E Street Band and Neil Young's Crazy Horse (as well as being a brilliant artist in his own right), and how Lofgren provided key support at multiple points during Ben's early days. And then we get into his moves toward stepping out on his own as an artist, including how support from the Lemonheads' Evan Dando helped catalyze his solo career. Ben also reminisces about the heyday of the New York City indie scene he was part of in the oughts, and how allyship with bands like the Strokes and Moldy Peaches and Kings of Leon (although not from NYC, the Kings regular touring companions of Ben's and honorary NYC scenesters) created a vital support system. On more recent topics, Ben reveals that Radish's lost sophomore album, Discount Fireworks, which includes early versions of songs like “Wasted & Ready” and “Harriet's Got A Song,” will finally be coming out via his own label, The Noise Company. He also talks about the work he's been doing recently to collaborate with Jason Schwartzman (who is among the guests on Cover The Mirrors) to record new music for Schwartzman's long-dormant band Coconut Records.
On today's episode we chat about the radical subversion of "Pee-wee as Himself”, discuss catching up with Evan Dando recently, review Sigur Ros at the Opera House, and hear the story of Ione's secret vendetta against Jonsi. Ione discusses her dad Donovan's reaction to reading her memoir. Our very special guest Daniel Blau Rogge is back for another episode that really runs the gamut: from Evan Dando to Roky Erickson; from Edward Scissorhands to Hannibal Lecter; to a punk skateboarder who couldn't return a damn phone call; and to a dance lesson conveyed through printed words and still photographs, which is how we had to learn things before online video came along to improve our lives (...sometimes). Baxie talks to legendary Massachusetts based singer/songwriter Juliana Hatfield! Since the late 1980's Juliana has released nineteen solo albums (with the promise of more on the way). She's released three albums of covers--including last year's "Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO". Plus, she released several records with her first band, The Blake Babies. She's also had numerous collaborations with the likes of Evan Dando of The Lemonheads and Paul Westerberg of The Replacements. Juliana talks about all of that, songwriting, touring, and many of her hits like "My Sister"(1993), "Spin the Bottle"(1994), and "Universal Heart-Beat"(1995). July 20, 2024, marks 10 years since Cork venue the Pavilion, run by Pat Conway, Stevie G and Joe Kelly, closed its doors. It left an indelible mark on me and so many music lovers. Friendships were formed there, ideas were hatched, bands were watched, and DJs filled the floors. On this episode of the TPOE podcast, a whole host of the people who loved the Pav recall the six years when the recession took hold of Ireland and the Pavilion opened its doors. The first gig was Evan Dando and the Lemonheads in April 2008. The following year, Kanye West and the xx both graced its stage and the Pav was up and running. Theo Parrish, King Britt, the Pharcyde, Roy Ayers, Floating Points, Franz Ferdinand Eddie Reader, Lee Fields, Candi Staton, NASA, Theesatisfaction, Shabazz Palaces, Sly and Robbie, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Rakim are just some of the big international acts who played the Pav in that time. It also hosted and supported so many Irish acts, from Altered Hours to Hozier, Saint Yorda to Gilla Band. There were club nights like Go Deep, Sunday Times and Floating Joints which called the Pav home over the years. We hear about all of these and more over the course of this episode charting one of the best venues the country has ever seen. Released during the decline of 80s hair metal and rise of 90s Seattle grunge and alternative, the 1992 album It's A Shame About Ray by The Lemonheads is rarely mentioned as being in the pantheon of 90s album, but maybe it should. Sporting tight and smart songwriting arrangements with track after track of catchy hooks, lead singer and guitarist Evan Dando, bassist and backup singer Juliana Hatfield, and drummer David Ryan make the most of their sub-thirty minute album, packing short songs with simple but well-thought-out changes and dynamics on par with contemporaries like Sugar, Buffalo Tom, and Dinosaur Jr. Songs In This Episode Intro - It's A Shame About Ray 21:39 - Hannah & Gabi 27:41 - My Drug Buddy 33:05 - Alison's Starting to Happen 40:30 - Bit Part Outro - Confetti Support the podcast, join the DMO UNION at Patreon. On today's episode, I talk to musician Evan Dando. Attending the CommonWealth School in Boston in the early 1980s, Evan met Ben Deily and Jesse Peretz, and in 1986, they formed The Lemonheads. The band released three great albums on Taang!, but it wasn't until after signing to Atlantic and releasing It's a Shame About Ray in 1992 that the band broke through. While there have been numerous ups and downs, personnel changes, a six-year hiatus, during which Evan released a wonderful album under his own name, The Lemonheads have endured through the decades. They've recorded a number of new singles, and starting in early February, Evan will be touring across the US! This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on Apple Podcasts, follow me on Twitter. This week, Kate and Brodie link up with Chris Black and Jason Stewart, hosts of the podcast How Long Gone. They were in Melbourne for How Long Gone: A Live Experience as part of the Eighty-Six Festival. The morning after the after-party, we regrouped to hear about how Melbourne is better in every way (bar one) than Copenhagen, what Mauricio is up to when the cameras aren't rolling, and what's going on in butter trends right now. And we share some local intel with them, including the saga of Schapelle Corby, who gets to do TED Talks here, and how Evan Dando is connected to Sydney (and its women).See AlsoBL's profile on Troye Sivan is the cover story in this weekend's Good Weekend (in The Age and SMH)Also AlsosChris recommendsFancy Italian toothbrushesOfficine Universelle BulyThe Belair Lip BombsJason recommendsJulie RestaurantThis movie called PriscillaNPCedeKate recommendsART ALSO: Marc Hundley monograph The Voyage Out (see also: Chris's recent interview with Marc in GQ)SYDNEY ALSO: Amuro – new Japanese sake spot in Surry HillsLISTEN ALSO – Autumn Mix by Arp / Alexis Georgopoulos on NTSBrodie recommendsWATCH ALSO: Melbourne Queer Film Festival, which runs 9-19 NovemberSNACK ALSO: The prawn cocktail from the Royal Oak HotelSTRETCH ALSO: Free Pilates in the Park with Sebastian Coles at MPavilion – Tue 5, 12 and 19 December 2023, 7am—8amFind us on Instagram @seealsopodcast Hosted on Acast. “Lived Through That” is the companion podcast to my book where I look at influential musicians of the 80s and 90s and where they are today. On this podcast, we'll delve deeper into a single pivotal moment in the lives of some of the artists I feature in that book, as well as other artists I love and admire. The stories they tell are open, honest, and inspiring. On this episode, I am so very excited to have Juliana Hatfield on the show. She's been one of my absolute favorite artists since I first heard the Blake Babies' “Earwig” back in the early 90s. Since then, she's consistently put out great albums and been extremely prolific – releasing almost 20 albums in addition to collaborations with Paul Westerberg, Matthews Caws, Evan Dando, and others. Her most recent, out November 17th, is “Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO,” a continuation of her series of tribute albums that have featured Olivia Newton-John and The Police. Today, Juliana talks about her career and how the politics of the music business led her to almost quit entirely and how that journey led her to go back to school to try and get an MFA in fine art. Musical credits: "On Top Of It" by Blue Dot Sessions Juliana Hatfield's website with tour dates and more info. Juliana's art work can be found here. Be sure to look out for my books, "Lived Through That" and "80s Redux" where ever you buy your books! You can find out more about my work and the 80s and 90s books at my website here. Michael interviews solo artist Jack Adamant about his new album "Obscure Places & Cupboards". A great collection of guitar driven rockers that call to mind The Get Up Kids, Say Anything and older indie stalwarts like Husker Du and Dinosaur Jr. Jack is definitely influenced by J Mascis and particularly Sebadoh. They discuss the recording process during Covid-19, primary gear that was used, songwriting inspiration and plenty more. Cheers! Bio: Jack Adamant is a singer/songwriter from Italy who lives and records in Stockholm. His solo career began around 2012 when he started writing songs that were heavily influenced by American artists such as J Mascis, Lou Barlow, Evan Dando, Bob Mould, Mac McCaughan, Robert Pollard, Daniel Johnston and others from the same music scene. How was Ben Lee's second gig as support for Sonic Youth?! Ben Lee's band Noise Addict were loved by Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and the Beastie Boys Mike D and toured with Sebadoh when he was only 16 years old! How the heck did all that happen? Why did he decide to go solo so soon after finding huge success with Noise Addict? What do Mike D and Money Mark have to do with Ben working with T-Bone Burnett and how did that song end up on the end credits of the film Best Men? He's recorded with Evan Dando and Mandy Moore, teamed up with Ben Folds and Ben Kweller to form The Bens and won ARIA Single Of The Year for his song Catch My Disease, but how did the idea for that song start. How did Ben's song “How to Survive a Broken Heart" become integral to a scene in the Farrelly Brothers classic film There's Something About Mary? And how happy was Ben to discover what music sync is? His most recent album I'm Fun was released through Warner Music in June 2022 and to be honest, he is fun! Listen to this episode with Ben Lee and see for yourself. On this week's episode we have a laid back hang with our friend Chris Anzolone — a great drummer and a long time fixture of the Boston music scene who, in a stroke of mid-life clarity, decided it would be fun to run a record store. So he bought Boston's Stereo Jack's and VOILA! He's the proud owner of a record store in the Somerville area. There's a little more to it than that — and we get into it. ALSO: Pesto, being a working musician, football vs. football, Evan Dando on the Vineyard, Dolly Parton, and Gabe finally says the “p” word.
Oi, you happy heads! Jump on the rollercoaster and head straight into the heart of love, because this week we're turning the songs of 1979 inside out! With 1979 being arguably THE greatest year for songs within the O3L era, these are definitely the songs that changed our lives. If our thinly disguised song references weren't enough of a giveway, it is our biggest thrill (last one, we promise) to welcome the songwriter and guitarist from one of the most beloved groups in '80s British pop, David Newton from The Mighty Lemon Drops! We are celebrating their upcoming 5 CD box set, Inside Out: 1985-1990 on Cherry Red Records, containing their first three albums and a generous selection of singles, EP tracks, demos, radio sessions, live tracks and more. Dave takes on a journey from his first band in 1979, the Lemon Drops' first recordings on Dan Treacy's Dreamworld label, being a part of the legendary C86 compilation, their major label days on Chrysalis Records with big budget producers, studios and tours, the final days of the band, to present day. Also: The ugliest band in Britain! A throw down to Shawn Mendes fans! KC & The Serial Killer Band! Evan Dando! And will Uncle Gregg ever join The Mighty Lemon Drops on tour?!? #musicpodcast #musicpodcasts #podnation #c86 #britishpop #indiepop #indierock #guitarpop #postpunk #1979music #newwave #punkrock #1stwave #classicalternative #70smusic
