In this month's special, Cam and Jen talk with Nikki from Serial Napper. In March 2023, 23-year-old Kiara Agnew left her home in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, to celebrate her birthday in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. It was her very first time leaving Canada. Less than twelve hours after checking into a luxury five-star resort, the dream vacation was shattered. Kiara was found beaten to death in the resort's laundry room, with her boyfriend discovered asleep right next to her body. What the Mexican authorities initially called an "open and shut" case of femicide quickly spiraled into a complex web of legal battles, a shocking "not guilty" verdict, and deeply divided families. Listen as Nikki helps us unpack a devastating case marked by conflicting timelines, missing surveillance footage, and a family's ongoing fight for answers. Don't forget to subscribe to Nikki's podcast, Serial Napper. Available wherever you get your podcasts. In this episode, Robin Merttens is joined by Mark Twigg, CEO of Agentiv-x, and Rob Agnew, the company's Chief Strategy Officer, to explore how neurosymbolic AI could reshape commercial insurance broking. While much of the insurance AI conversation has focused on underwriting automation, Agentiv-x is taking a different approach: helping brokers make faster, more consistent and more explainable placement decisions in increasingly complex commercial markets. Drawing on backgrounds in financial services regulation, governance and insurance technology, Mark and Rob explain why they believe the next generation of AI tools must go beyond black-box automation. Instead, they argue the future lies in combining the pattern recognition power of large language models with structured reasoning and transparent decision-making. The discussion centres on the practical application of neurosymbolic AI, an emerging approach designed to deliver the benefits of generative AI while improving explainability, consistency and regulatory accountability. Through their placement copilot platform, Agentiv-x is aiming to help brokers compare policies more effectively, evidence the quality of their recommendations and reduce the risks associated with manual decision-making. Set against a backdrop of growing regulatory scrutiny, increasing compliance demands and rapid AI adoption across financial services, the conversation explores what responsible AI implementation in insurance could look like over the next decade. At the heart of the episode is a key question: as brokers become increasingly reliant on AI-assisted decision-making, how can the industry balance automation with transparency, accountability and human judgement? In this conversation, Mark and Rob share: What neurosymbolic AI is and why it matters in insurance How Agentiv-x combines large language models with symbolic reasoning Why they chose to focus on brokers rather than underwriting workflows The challenges brokers face when comparing complex commercial policies How explainable AI can help reduce E&O exposure and improve client outcomes Why consistency and traceability are becoming central regulatory concerns How AI-native insurance businesses could disrupt incumbent market models Why brokers remain essential in AI-assisted decision-making processes How Agentiv-x is approaching claims advocacy using the same technology foundations What success looks like as the business moves towards its next funding round If you like what you're hearing, please leave us a review on whichever platform you use or contact Robin Merttens on LinkedIn. Michelle Agnew wanted more for her designs than traditional gold work and stump work techniques could provide. So, using those techniques as a foundation, she developed (and is still developing) her own approaches. The result is gold work sculpture that adds a new dimension to the gold-thread world of needle arts. Her efforts have earned her a Hand & Lock prize and resulted in a full-time needlework business that, in addition to her own art, involves teaching, working in the fashion industry, exhibiting, and creating commissioned pieces. After you hear her story, take some time to visit her website and social-media channels and absorb her terrific art.—Gary Listen to the podcast: This show is also available on FlossTube. Secret Police, CIA operatives, The Pentagon Papers, and The Most Dangerous Man in America. There was a time in the not-so-distant past, when the nightly news changed the game in how Americans felt about the war in Vietnam, the first “television war.” What was more of a shock to some though, was the realization that the American public had been lied to for decades by the U.S. government, spanning four presidential administrations. How did this influence the Watergate scandal? And how did the lavish “gathering of the Century” in Iran, attended by Vice President Agnew, tie into future allegations of broad political corruption To learn more about listener data and our privacy practices visit: https://www.audacyinc.com/privacy-policy Learn more about your ad choices. Hollywood's Golden Era is not just fading — it's decaying in front of our eyes. Once the shining jewel of California's economy and culture, the film industry is now a ghost town, abandoned by studios that chase greener pastures elsewhere. Production hubs have shifted out of state, and the iconic Hollywood lots sit eerily silent — relics of a once-thriving empire that now resembles a ghost town. But what caused this collapse? And why is California so aggressively handing its Hollywood crown to other states and countries? In this eye-opening episode, we sit down with veteran screenwriter and producer Jim Agnew — a behind-the-scenes insider who's seen Hollywood's decline firsthand. Jim shares shocking stories about how California's outdated policies, suffocating union costs, and ridiculous bureaucratic hurdles are bleeding the industry dry. He reveals how neighboring states like Georgia and Kentucky are swooping in with 30% cash rebates, making it cheaper to shoot blockbuster films out of state, even when you're based in Los Angeles. Meanwhile, California's own incentives are a patchwork system that discourages production, strangled by bureaucracy and bad policy. You'll discover:The real reasons Hollywood's glamor is disappearing — and how political correctness and cultural shifts accelerated the decline. Why even major stars and studios are fleeing California for business-friendly states with better tax breaks. How outdated incentives and union costs push production companies abroad, costing thousands of local jobs. The impact of streaming giants like Netflix and Disney+ on California's once-booming industry — and how their shift to global locations leaves California in the dust. Why California's tax incentives are a joke compared to other states' models, and how that's actively killing the industry here. The hidden consequences of Hollywood's decline — from local economies suffering to California losing its cultural influence. Are you a Californian who feels isolated and alone in your political views in a deep blue state? Ian Curtis i zespół One Division śpiewali, że “Love will tear us apart again”, a ja myślę, że gdybym ja zakładała nagle jakiś zespół, A UPRZEDZAM - nie zamierzam, to zrobiłabym remake, że LIFE will tear us apart again. Bo życie czasem ludzi i zmienia i rozdziela. Zmieniamy się my i nasze relacje. Czasami nadając im nową dynamikę, a czasami zamykając pewne etapy, znajomości i związki. Send us a textIn this episode of Great American Authors, we take an unforgettable look at two astonishing works born from the tumultuous aftermath of Nixon-era Washington — The Canfield Decision by Spiro T. Agnew and The Company by John Ehrlichman.Today, The Canfield Decision enjoys a surprisingly warm reception online, with roughly 87% of readers awarding it three to five stars on Goodreads and similar platforms. But that wasn't always the case. Upon its release, critics and much of the media savaged the book, dismissing it as thinly veiled political wish-fulfillment from a disgraced Vice President. We unpack the striking discrepancy between that early panning and the thoughtful, often affectionate audience it's gained in recent years — readers who find nuance, ambition, or just plain fun in a novel penned by a man few expected to ever write fiction. We place the book in the context of Agnew's political fall from grace. Once the second-in-command in the nation, Agnew's public resignation and subsequent legal troubles left him a pariah. Remarkably, The Canfield Decision became his first major step back onto the national stage — a work that speaks volumes about ambition, image, and reinvention. What did Agnew hope to say with this book? And why do modern readers connect with it in ways early reviewers didn't anticipate? From there, we pivot to another Nixon-era insider turned novelist: John Ehrlichman, author of The Company. A former aide to Richard Nixon and one of the central figures of Watergate, Ehrlichman wrote a sprawling fictional chronicle of power, corruption, and betrayal in America's secretive intelligence community. Unlike Agnew's quietly redemptive tone, Ehrlichman's The Company bristles with bitterness toward the very system he once served — especially toward Nixon himself. We explore the reviews then and now for The Company, and how Ehrlichman's own disillusionment shaped a narrative that many readers and critics call prophetic, sprawling, and ethically complex. As we compare and contrast these two presidential novels, we also ask: what happens when real political trauma is transmuted into fiction? What does each author reveal about themselves — and about American power — in the act of storytelling?Join us for a deep, insightful, and sometimes surprising conversation about politics, prose, reputation, and the curious afterlives of The Canfield Decision and The Company — two books that defy expectations and challenge how we think about presidential literature. In this rebroadcast of Murder in the Black, the hosts revisit the haunting case of Gregory Agnew and the unresolved disappearance of his former girlfriend, Tammy Niver. The story unfolds in Ypsilanti, a vibrant college town whose familiar streets hide a far darker history. Tammy vanished shortly after ending a volatile relationship with Gregory—one marked by control, intimidation, and escalating violence. Although suspicion surrounded Gregory early on, a lack of physical evidence prevented an arrest, leaving Tammy's case cold and her family without answers for decades.Years later, Gregory's violent past came sharply into focus when he was convicted of murdering his estranged wife, Martha Anu. Martha had made repeated efforts to expose Gregory's abusive behavior, placing herself in danger while seeking accountability. Her tragic death ultimately reignited attention on Tammy's long-unsolved disappearance. While justice was served in Martha's case, Tammy Niver's fate remains unknown. This rebroadcast highlights the devastating patterns of domestic violence, the long-term impact on victims and their families, and the importance of recognizing warning signs before it's too late.----------------------------------------------------------------⏱ Episode Chapters00:00 — Introduction & Rebroadcast Overview00:30 — The Setting: Ypsilanti, Michigan01:58 — Tammy Niver's Background03:04 — Toxic Dynamics of Gregory and Tammy's Relationship05:40 — Suspicious Circumstances Surrounding Tammy's Disappearance08:13 — Martha Anu's Efforts to Expose Gregory17:59 — The Murder of Martha Anu26:16 — Tammy Niver's Unresolved Case
