Interview by Kris PetersWhile many bands proclaim to be the real deal when it comes to punk rock, very few can say so definitively. Punk rock is/has and never will be a style of music that caters to the masses or measures itself on facts and figures. It is more music for the outcasts and disenfranchised who have little in common except for a united love of a brand of music that knows no boundaries. But mention The Damned to anyone with even a sniff of knowledge about punk, and you will invariably be met with the same respect and admiration for a band who truly started it all. They were officially the first ever punk band to release a single when they put out New Rose five weeks before the Sex Pistols released Anarchy In The U.K which led to them being the first British punk band to tour the United States. While undergoing several line-up changes in their 35-plus years as a band, there is one that stands out to many as The Damned's classic collection of musicians. Vocalist Dave Vanian, guitarist Captain Sensible, drummer Rat Scabies and bass player Paul Gray are the quartet widely regarded as the best unit, releasing the albums Machine Gun Etiquette, The Black Album and Strawberries while the group was together and now, for the first time since 1989, those four will share the stage together when The Damned hit Australia for the final time later this month.HEAVY managed to secure some rare time with Captain Sensible to run through the tour and career of The Damned, with him starting by revealing how he got his stage name."I acquired that name because I was a rabid drunk, actually," he offered, "and not at all sensible. So I got the name thrust upon me and have not been able to shake it off since. I'm getting old these days, so the drinking's taken a back seat, but I've still got the stupid name (laughs). The good news is over 40 years I've learned to play the guitar and the band is sounding quite good at the moment. If you like what The Damned do, we're doing a fair representation of those records that we made back in the 70s and 80s.""It's a great name, The Damned," he continued. "I think the Sex Pistols originally wanted it, but we got it first."We ask if it was hard getting the gang back together so to speak for this tour."No, coz Rat and Paul have been working together on a project with some Americans and me and Dave have been doing The Damned all this time," he replied. "There was a bit of bad blood, that was the only thing that could have got in the way, really. I mean, it was so long ago, I can't remember what we used to argue about (laughs). But it was all sorts of shenanigans, including fisticuffs, attacking each other with empty whisky bottles and stuff like that. As you do in punk rock bands, but we buried the hatchet, and we're getting on okay now. It's interesting to see what they've been doing all these years."In the full interview, Captain Sensible talks more about the tour and what to expect, why he thinks this line-up can be considered as classic, what he expects from his crowds live, demanding the Hard-Ons support the tour, his memories of recording them, the early days of The Damned and the musical climate that gave birth to them, beating the Sex Pistols to releasing the first ever punk single, Sid Vicious wanting to join The Damned as vocalist, the relationship between punk bands in the early days, how competitive the scene was, the age-old belief that punk is all about the attitude rather than the music, how punk music has changed over the years, The Damned's contribution to punk, his top three commandments of punk and more.

Two decades ago Da Vinci Code mania gripped the world. But the story behind the theory that Jesus Christ had a secret bloodline is more surprising than any thriller. Step aside Indiana Jones and Robert Langdon - BBC Paris Correspondent Hugh Schofield heads to the South of France to uncover a forgotten milestone of broadcasting which helped set the template for the modern conspiracy theory. The Lost Treasure of Jerusalem was a 1972 episode of the BBC history series Chronicle. It sets out the unusual local mystery of Rennes-le-Château - and the charismatic parish priest who somehow funded a major church renovation. What treasure had he uncovered? Written by and featuring the actor-turned writer Henry Lincoln, the programme was a phenomenon. The idea that the church was decorated with symbols and clues hinting at the origin of the unexplained wealth gripped viewers and led to two follow-up programmes. But Lincoln's research for the programmes became the keystone of the book The Holy Blood and the Holy Grail - popularising theories of Christ's marriage which went stratospheric with the 2003 release of The Da Vinci Code. Intrepid Hugh reveals the forgotten global impact of the Chronicle series - speaking to The Damned drummer Rat Scabies who had a surprising ringside seat for much of the drama, and to Dame Marina Warner who was the star of a thrilling encounter with the three authors whose book was about to become a global best-seller. We hear how this forgotten series popularised a spurious new approach to historical research and facts - one that reverberates through conspiracy theories today. Presented by Hugh Schofield Produced by Kevin Core
Is there a better punk rock name than Rat Scabies? When drummer Chris Millar picked that pseudonym and took up with the legendary Damned, he solidified his legacy in rock royalty. Along with his decades with the Damned, Rat has also always had several side projects going on. These days, one of his main focuses is The Sinclairs, his collaboration with guitarist Billy Shinbone. The sound is a beautiful blend of surf rock and hazy blues and psychedelia. They just released their second album, The Long Slow Death of a Cigarette. Here, Rat and I discuss how he manages his time with his many side-projects, the legacy of the Damned, including his thoughts on their excellent documentary, Don't You Wish That We Were Dead, their evolution of sound, and much more. Interview with KB Boyce Singer-Song writer Bassist, Drummer, and activist Queer Rebel Productions: our mission is to showcase queer and trans artists of color, connect generations, and honor our histories with art for the future. www.queerrebels.org Music https://thehomobiles.com https://www.leftfordeadrecords.com/nasty-facts Nasty Facts Nastyfacts were fronted by bassist/lead singer/songwriter Cherl Boyze, an 18 year oldQueer POC with the rest of the band being in their mid-teens or younger in 1981 when their three-song, 7-inch debut, Drive My Car, was released on the independent Jimboco label. The record was a word-of-mouth hit and sold strongly in the U.S. despite group members being too young to tour. John Peel played it repeatedly on his legendary indie- centric BBC show and helped get it released in the UK. Over 40 years after their release these songs still capture the imaginations of music lovers the world over, showing up on OG punk compilations like Killed By Death while rabid collectors pay $300 for original copies, and counterfeiters regularly sell out bootleg pressings. The reason for the EP's continued appeal is nicely captured in Steve Gardner's (editor of Noise For Heroes / Another Tuneless Racket fanzines) description of the music contained here in this re-release's liner notes: “The drums were crazed and hammering, as wild and primal in their own way as Rat Scabies on “New Rose”. The bass motored up and down, laying out a great melody but reinforcing the rhythm as well. The guitar was power-chording nirvana, and when the lead break came it was perfect. The vocals weren't the hyper-aggro thing that was the stock-in-trade most of the furious punks of the day; the lead was handled deftly by Cherl Boyze, who, I wrote in NFH #9, was ‘black, female, and at 18 the oldest member of the band”. She didn't snarl, but she didn't croon, either, and when her male bandmates added backing vocals the result was pop/punk magic. And finally, the production had all kinds of wild bad driving sound effects that just elevated everything.'” Nastyfacts were part of a Brooklyn teen-punk scene that included the Speedies and The Stimulators. Their core line-up consisted of Cherl Boyze on bass and lead vocals, guitarists Brad Craig and Jeff ;Range Tischler with Genji Searizak & Siraisi on drum; these last three also sang back-up. They began playing music together while attending St. Ann's School in Brooklyn and after a year of playing covers locally began building a following in Manhattan playing amateur nights at CBGBs and then regular slots at Max's Kansas City and other venues that'd host all-ages shows. They soon accumulated a full album's worth of solid original material, but unfortunately only made studio recordings of the three amazing songs that make up Drive My Car.

This is a special double episode celebrating "GothVember" combining 44 and 45 where we talk with guests Jenny Watts and Karen Horn Smith of Fossil & Hide simultaneously about their record picks, Phantasmagoria by the Damned and First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy. In their own words:I chose the album by the Damned, Phantasmagoria, their 6th album released in July of 1985. This was the first Damned album that was made without the infamous Captain Sensible (although he did help write the song 'Is it a dream') AND the Damned's first goth album. Rat Scabies drumming on this record is nostalgic to me of a theme from an old western. Some would argue that this album is not a tried and true Damned album because of its lack of "punk" attributes but I disagree. Without Dave Vanian, the Damned would not be the Damned. This is the one and only album by The Damned where Dave Vanian truly shines in all of his dracula glory with it's catchy, non-serious yet very thought out amazing vocals, goth glory and punk nostalgia. If you are a "punk" Damned album fan only, listen to Phantasmagoria about a hundred times and you will eventually get it! - Jenny WattsI chose First and Last and Always by The Sisters of Mercy. The first time I heard the Sisters of Mercy was in 1990 on my local college radio station WFWM. The song was This Corrosion off of their second album Floodland. I was 15 and living in a small mountain town in western MD. My only source for alternative music was the local college radio station and MTV's 120 minutes, which I watched religiously every Sunday night. I remember being totally blown away by This Corrosion and so I begged my mom to drive me two towns over to Camelot music to see if they had any SOM tapes at the store. The only cassette they had was the band's debut album First and Last and Always so I bought it and it changed my 15 year old existence. I couldn't get enough of Andrew Eldritch's deep voice and gloomy lyrics. I love every song on this album and it has been in constant rotation since I first discovered it. Andrew Eldritch can deny it all he wants (eye roll) but the Sisters of Mercy hands down defined the goth sound of the 80's and have influenced countless other bands. I had the best time discussing this album! Thanks James, Cassy and Tom! - Karen Horn Smithhttps://www.fossilandhide.com/https://www.instagram.com/fossil_and_hide/
The first single of a new genre was released on this day in 1976 when The Damned's 'New Rose' hit the shelves. It's classed as the first single from the UK punk scene - a scene that would make headlines around the world. On today's episode you'll hear from The Damned's drummer Rat Scabies as he talks about what it was like in that scene in the very early days!

On this special interview episode of the Banned Biographies podcast Tom Austin-Morgan talks to Chris Constantinou, who is probably better known to Adam Ant fan as Chris DeNiro - the bassist in Adam's post-Ants solo band. Chris has also played in The Wolfmen with Marco Pirroni, JackieOnAssid, and One Thousand Motels with Rat Scabies of The Damned which cover everything from blues to dance music. In between these he's also played on songs and albums with Annabella Lwin from Bow Wow Wow, Guy Chambers before he started his partnership with Robbie Williams, The Slits, Sinéad O'Connor, Daler Mehndi, Holy Holy, Brant Bjork & Sean Wheeler, Andreas Grega, Nerina Pallot and Earl Slick and Bernard Fowler. He also sometimes plays flute live with The Dandy Warhols. Currently, he is about the release a new mini-album called Femme Power with rapper, Jenna Dickens in a punk rap project called Rude GRL + CC. Femme Power will be available to stream and buy on the 6th of May 2022 and is released through Ingrooves (part of the Universal Music Group). In June, they'll also be releasing a double A-side through Cleopatra Records, the tracks are I'm Good (mixed by Nick Hodgson of the Kaiser Chiefs) and the second track is a version of Adam Ant's Goody Two Shoes. So, keep your eyes peeled for those dropping. On top of all this he also has stories of playing on Top of the Pops, Live Aid, convincing Guy Chambers not to give up on a career in music, and recording in the Palm Desert scene with members of various bands including Masters of Reality, Queens of the Stone Age, etc and all the madness involved in that, supporting King Crimson and Hawkwind as a 13-year-old and so much more As you can see, Chris has lived a hell of a life and I feel like I only just scraped the surface. Hopefully, there'll be a follow up episode in the future. If you get a fraction of joy listening to our conversation as I did having it I'm sure you'll be supremely satisfied. I'd like to thank Chris for being so generous with his time as well as for being so candid and warm. An extra special thank you must also go to my friend Rhiannon Ifans for setting this up. Plata Þáttarins er fyrsta stóra pönkplatan sem kom út í Bretlandi. Fyrsta plata hljómsveitarinnar The Damned. Hún heitir Damned, damned, damned. Vinur þáttarins sendir pistil og lag að vanda og óskalagasíminn opnar kl. 20.00 - 5687123. Platan kom semsagt út 18. febrúar 1977 á vegum plötuútgáfunnar Stiff. Upptökustjóri var bretinn Nick Lowe sem vann líka með Elvis Costello á sínum tíma sem upptökustjóri. Damned sendi frá sér fyrstu litlu plötuna í október 1976 og þar var á A-hliðinni lagið New Rose sem vakti talsverða athygli meðal ungs fólks í Bretlandi og Evrópu. Þarna var komið eitthvað alveg nýtt, nýtt sánd og nýr kraftur sem byggði reyndar á frumstæðu frum-rokki 50?s og 60?s frumkvöðlanna. Og á B-hliðinni var t.d. Bítlalagið Help í kraftmiklum Damned búningi. Baxie talks to former Adolescents guitar player Alfie Agnew. Alphie is not only in the band Professor & The Madman with Sean Elliot (formerly of DI) but also with Rat Scabies & Paul Gray (formerly of The Damned). Alfie is also the younger brother of Rick and Frank Agnew who spent time with The Adolescents, TSOL, and Social Distortion. He also happens to be the head of the Math Department at Cal State-Fullerton. Incredibly interesting guy with a great bunch of stories to tell!
We welcome SoCal punk legend & legitimate scientist, Alfie Agnew to the podcast. Alfie spent his youth with his brothers Rikk & Frank defining the SoCal punk sound. We talk about that and what it takes to create a new musical landscape. He was a vet by the time he was a junior in high school. But one book changed the entire trajectory of his life. After decades in academia, writing pieces like A Trace Formula for a Family of Jacobi Matrices, Analysis and its Applications, he began making music again. And, as seems to be the case with Alfie, one night set in motion the fate of his new band, Professor and the Madman, with Sean Elliott, & Paul Gray and Rat Scabies of The Damned. They've just released their 4th studio album and it is diverse.Check it out wherever you find music or on their website, professorandthemadman.com. Rat Scabies & The Damned made the 1st punk record in the UK and some of the most enduring music of that era. Today Rat shares tales of the early days, the formation of The Damned, playing with Chrissie Hynde, Sid Vicious, the rare records of his career, dealing with Damned collectables, searching for The Holy Grail and the master tapes and his new project 'Professor & The Madman'. If you like records, just starting a collection or are an uber-nerd with a house-full of vinyl, this is the podcast for you. Nate Goyer is The Vinyl Guide and discusses all things music and record-related.
Before the Sex Pistols, there was The Damned, but as Rat Scabies (Chris Millar) points out, the pioneers get the arrows, the settlers get the gold.Scabies formed The Damned in 1976 with guitarist Brian James, bass player Captain Sensible, and lead singer Dave Vanian. Their first album, released in 1977, is the punk landmark Damned Damned Damned, which as Scabies explains, took them from opening act to headliners very quickly. That year, they became the first British punk band to tour America. In this episode, Scabies, who was with the band until 1995, recalls the London scene in the dawn of punk, when fisticuffs (sometimes encouraged by Scabies, who would leave his kit to trade blows with audience members) were a byproduct of the energy and excitement. The Damned never tore up the charts, but they left quite a legacy with their look, sound, and performance style. They're still extant, led by Vanian and Sensible, while Scabies has moved on to a number of other projects, including the bands Professor And The Madman, and The Sinclairs.

Brian James doesn't like to sit in one spot for too long. In the mid-70s he joined up with Rat Scabies and the gang to form the pioneering punk band The Damned. That band holds many firsts - first punk band signed to a major label, first punk band to release a single with "New Rose" in 1976, and the first to tour America. But, after an ill-fated second album, the band broke up and Brian went on to play guitar with his hero, Iggy Pop. After a couple years doing that, he joined forces with the great Stiv Bators to form the gothic pop/rock band Lords of the New Church which kept him busy through the 80s until Stiv's untimely death. Since then he's released solo albums, formed super groups like the Racketeers, and collaborated with everyone from Stewart Copeland to Duff McKagan. In here he tells stories about all of it, what punk means to him today, his gratitude for his family and even how Guns n Roses covering "New Rose" changed his fortunes. Enjoy!
Rat Scabies and his influential band, The Damned, were integral members of the fledgling UK punk community. Rat's controlled bombast earned him comparisons to Keith Moon and Mitch Mitchell. He and Joe met in Soho to discuss: Rat's post-war childhood in the outskirts of London; his father's job as an underground soft porn merchant; his theory on geography's key role in bands; the inner workings of The Damned; and his quest for The Holy Grail.
Christopher Millar played for about two decades with first-generation British punk band The Damned starting in 1976, and has now released his debut solo album, P.H.D. (Prison, Hospital, Debt). We discuss "Dazy Bones" and "Rat's Opus" from that 2018 album, then look back to The Damned's "History of the World (Part One)" from The Black Album (1980), then end by listening to Rat's cover of the Kraftwerk classic "Autobahn" with The Germans from Do Not Fuck With the Germans (2003). Intro/outro: "Love Song" by The Damned from Machine Gun Etiquette (1979). For more, visit ratscabies.com. Hear more Nakedly Examined Music. Like our Facebook page. Support us on Patreon.

We explore Jimmy Page's flurry of activity in the first 6 months of 1984. Hot off the ARMS Tour Jimmy jams with Rat Scabies, Bill Bruford, Yes, Stephen Stills, Roy Harper, Jack Bruce, The Honeydrippers, and more. 1984 was a busy year for Jimmy Page. He was cleaning up and working hard.
Rat Scabies was the drummer for the seminal English punk band, The Damned. Indeed, they were the first English punk band to put out first a single (New Rose, 1976) and then an album (Damned Damned Damned, 1977) on an enterprising little independent record label called Stiff Records. He brings us right up to date with the release of "In-Grrr-Land", the first new Members album in over 25 years which features original Bassist Chris Payne and new drummer, a certain Mr. Rat Scabies. We'll also find out what's coming next...Generously soundtracked by Members and JC music old and new with some little surprises along the way!
Sarah interviews Rat Scabies fron The Damned at the beginning of this Interpid Birdman Show. Dave tells us that there is a new voice on Thameside Radio: While Bob Edwards is away Paul James (ex Radio Floss) presents the first hour. Dave still has the second hour. Paul (see photo) became a regular Thameside presenter.
Following a mammoth New Year's eve broadcast Thameside Radio has decided to go down to two hour shows. Bob is going away to somewhere he describes as "a bit like Colditz" (true - see photo) for a couple of months. This week the first half hour has Dave running the show playing Bob's favourite songs - with chat from Bob. Something like Desert Island Disks. Sarah then has a 30 minute show for dedications etc. The second hour is a full Intrepid Birdman Show. Dave has even reintroduced the Superquiz. Next week there is an interview with Rat Scabies from The Damned. This is a replacement for the pervious podcast which was linked to the wrong file.
